I was hoping that Dell would offer a comparison feature on its website so that you could compare different dell models to each other. i.e the studio line to the xps line to the inspiration line. I think this would be very helpfull for people choosing the correct system for there needs. Comment »
On PCWorld and PCMag, they say that when Windows is loaded onto an Apple, Windows runs faster! That is a big shame to all Windows fans. I mean if Dell could make all their computers run as fast as possible, without their preloaded junk, which I'm pretty sure that's what makes it go slow, then consumers, especially gamers would start to consider Dell's computers 2 Comments »
Dell Linux Cluster with 5,840 processors at the Texas Advanced Computing Center in Austin, performed laser surgery on a dog without the intervention of a surgeon.
When I read articles like that, my reaction is *OH WOW, DELL REALLY IS A HIGH TECH COMPANY* rather than just the budget wintel clone company that most people see it as. Comment »
You know what I think? I think that Dell should be more involved with gaming. They already have one of the greatest o buy desktops ever, the XPS 630. Plus more gamers would want to buy from Dell. Maybe even hosts their own gaming competitions for XBOX LIVE. 3 Comments »
I think this is the one question that most mobile gamers want to know. Will Dell make a laptop like the M1530 that is a gaming laptop? I don't mean like high end, just a laptop that can do well with most PC games out there. Think...imagine if Dell could partner up with NVIDIA to make a graphics card that is powerful to handle...like Crysis! And that when that graphics card gets old, or the motherboard, you could just get an upgrade just like the desktops. 3 Comments »
There's a few key attributes that define these sorts of machines, and give them their advantages over more conventional entry servers, if an entry server doesn't cost much more:
-Cheap SSDs as the default storage (typically compact flash). If there's not much I/O, these are less of a maintenance headache than RAID. Hard drives are handy if they're optional. -Lower overall system power. These machines use embedded or mobile CPUs for the most part, and this also leads to fewer fans (or none). This makes the system quiet, allows it to be deployed in poorly ventilated areas, reduces power usage in a rack, etc. -Serial console in addition to VGA, since a display and keyboard aren't always convenient if the machine is in a closet somewhere (Linux can handle this). Many organizations are used to dealing with serial consoles on their switches, so this isn't that big a deal.
We've used systems like this as file servers, various things that don't virtualize well like busy DNS servers, firewalls, etc. The power available in lower power platforms has even expanded to the point where Windows servers aren't even a problem.
The big problem with Soekris and Portwell and OEMs like them are that they really leave you to your own resources in a lot of ways. The documentation is highly technical but doesn't cover OS support, and they don't offer fast turnaround support contracts or supported OSes and software. Ultimately this is worthwhile if you're using more than a few of the machines, but an OEM like Dell would be welcome because the support would be much better for shops too small to do the homework necessary to do support in-house. It seems many of the highest voted Ideas are the most neglected by Dell
Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office (currently with 138079 points) has been one of the top-5-highest-voted Ideas on IdeaStorm since Feb 07. It has no "Status" regarding whether it's in progress, or rejected; and the only comments from Dell were just one employee's personal opinion.
No OS Preloaded (with 85050 points), has also been one of the top-5-highest for over a year. It's status is the same partial implementation (available on a couple models) that has been true from Dell since long before IdeaStorm was around (2004, if I recall). Clearly the Idea is popular because people want to see it on more models. Rather than just labeling the Idea as "partially implemented as always" - could you give some update on the progress on this Idea.
Firefox instead of IE (with 115593 points) has also been a top-5 idea for over a year. With the recent release of FireFox 3 - along with great press from the technology and business industry alike, another update on this idea would be very welcome. The recent Forbes article Why Firefox Matters clearly sees Firefox as the industry leader, and Wall Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal explicitly states that Firefox 3.0 Is the Best Browser for Web. Surely Dell would want to offer the best for their customers, no? 42 Comments »
I'm pretty frustrated to receive a flyer with a Inspiron 1525 laptop on sale for $599 while the Ubuntu laptop with the same specs are $699.
Why is this frustrating you ask? Why don't you just buy the $599 laptop, wipe it and put Ubuntu on it you say?
Well, I can easily purchase the $599 laptop, wipe Windows off and put Ubuntu on but there are two problems with that:
1) I don't get Dell's support for Ubuntu Linux 2) Dell doesn't see what I do with my PC after I purchase it, thus, they don't know that they actually sold an Ubuntu laptop. This means that it is one more Windows laptop sold over a Ubuntu laptop. Why is this important?
Well, apparently a few weeks after supporting Ubuntu, Dell sold 40,000 Ubuntu-based laptops. It is finally my turn to purchase one, but I want to be added to that count so that Dell knows I'm buying an Ubuntu-based laptop. Why is this important?
I want Dell to continue selling Ubuntu-based laptops, so I think it would be in the Linux communities and Dell's best interest to offer the same deals on Ubuntu laptops as Windows laptops.
I don't want Windows Vista and I don't want you to think I want Windows Vista. I want Ubuntu, but I want to pay the same price as the other guys. 7 Comments »
Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)
OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as: - Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections! - Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls - Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others &nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM] - PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program - Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing - Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player - Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System
Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.
CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell. 562 Comments »
Booting process gets longer day by day, as the OSes are getting fatter, The power of the processors are neutralized by these fatter OSes and we have not seen any improvement in the boot time. I would love to use my computer as soon as I switch on the system. Can any one build susch machines? 22 Comments »
I have a dell xps 410. I need a desktop computer, because no notebook has the power to do things like a desktop computer. If my desktop were to fail, and I had to replace it, currently with dell, I would have to wait 6 days before an uncustomized pc even left the warehouse. If I need a computer, I want to have it in less than a week. I think dell should try to do something to decrease build times, like maybe have popular configurations pre-built so that a new desktop could be shipped the same day its ordered. That way, I wouldn't have to wait for a week to get up and running again. 25 Comments »
Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.
I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.
Guys, why is it when you can allegedly get Linux on desktops and laptops, that it is never an option in the configuration of a product prior to purchasing?
All we seem to get as an option is Windows and then there is no option to not have Windows as an operating system. I understand that you may have reasons behind the system not having Linux as an option but surely you do not use hardware that is so non standard that either Ubuntu or SuSE will not work on it?
In the event that the computer that you use is not Linux compatible, then note this on the configuration page accordingly. For arguments sake have a pop up advising that some hardware is not compatible with Linux if it is selected as an OS choice. 2 Comments »
By including Project Gutenberg's whole collection of ASCII books on every new Dell,Millions of kilograms of paper will NOT be used to actually print those books - you can just read it on the screen, or have the computer's voice read the book to you.
For added educational benefit, include the past 5 years of Project Censored topics too:
Project Censored covers the news that no one else has been willing - or allowed - to talk about.
All the books could be placed in a single Directory - full of alphabetically sorted by author directories. If you want to read - just click down to the author of your choice and open one of their book files. If you want your hard drive space back, click the top directory: BOOKS - and delete it. All space returned.
Protect the Environment, and save some trees while learning !
Another benefit of books without the paper, in a Dell laptop: It is easier to carry 20,000 book files in your backpack, than actually carrying 20,000 books on your back! OUCH!
well watch this video to see how dell's XPS 1330 and 1530 Glossy Color in red and scratch test very nice Gorgeous. i hope Dell would implement this design of Glossy Color just watch how vibrant the red color on Glossy finish imagine the blue, black , white, etc color option, if this would be implemented as an option Now to the XPS 1530 and 1330, Dell staff , administrator have you implemented this idea? i hope you could implement this!!! NOW!!!
@ this time its not finish it seems to have bubbles but the finish product is so shinny and well protected from scratches
it seems to be bubbly and not smooth because the process is not finish you will have to remove the excess air and water but overall it will be a glossy finish and well protected from scratch 16 Comments »
The market has elected computer cases colors a standard: or you got it black or you got it white. This resembles the old days where the only colors for cars was only black.
Why do not tightly work with the customers leaving them decide about the colors of their computers? This is a thing that car industries does... a set of basic colours (at no cost) and a set of custom shiny-cool-beautiful-colors at some cost. 10 Comments »
I'm seeing that more and more colours are offered by Dell (after I purchased my laptop) and it really hurt seeing the colour I wanted so much finally being offered but is out of my reach.
It would be great if Dell allows customers to change the colour of the laptop lid (maybe with a small price) after the system is purchased. 13 Comments »
I've notice if you chose a system starting at $999 you get different options then the one at $1499. You may get a larger HD such as 320GB on $999 but for the 1499 the option starts at 320 goes up to 640GB Why? If someone wants to get a lower end graphics card at 999 but get a huge HD they should be able to do so....
