Facial Gestures for Mouse Control

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Software submitted by kirkktx Yesterday

I would like to configure my computer so that I control the mouse pointer using facial gestures.

For example, I'd like to train it to move to the right if I stick my tongue out and turn my head to the right. The motion would be based on how quickly I turn my head.

If I puff up my right cheek, this would map to a right mouse click.

Again, the mapping of all mouse events to facial gestures/movements should be configurable by the user.

Not only would this help users with disabilities, it could very well end up as a viable alternative to the touchpad. 22 Comments »

Move Home and End Keys close to my pinky on laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by kirkktx Yesterday

I like to use the home and end keys. Unfortunately on my laptop they are way up at the top.

There is unused space next on each side of the Up arrow key. On the left should be Home, on the right should be End. 1 Comment »

Calculator on the full-size keyboard.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by amaqsood 2 days ago

Ok, I just thought of this idea, we all have the 9 key number keypad on our traditional keyboard. How about if dell adds a LED Screen on top of the keypad under the CAPS LOCK indicator to function as a stand alone calculator. 9 Comments »

keyboard feature

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by nbgadd729 Aug 23

Use the "hold down" feature to capitalize a letter - similar to the Blackberry.

After just starting to use a Blackberry product it is probably my most favorite feature. If Dell were able to replicate this function on their keyboards it would actually save a finger stroke! Also, make using both easier. 12 Comments »

National keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by balle-larsen Aug 22

Make a national keyboard available for users in countries not in a popular zone.
E.G. Danish keyboard for users buying Dell umpc's in Germany og UK.
Otherwise we will never get Dell's in Denmark with Ubuntu preinstalled.
I for one would pay additional cost for the localized keyboard and accept no localized support from Dell. 1 Comment »

Optical Toslink S/PDIF Connector

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by psx Aug 21

I was looking for an optical Toslink/SPDIF-Connector inside the audio jack like on most laptops from other companies. An SPDIF-IN would also be great. Comment »

MINI CALCULATOR ON THE BASE.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by amaqsood Aug 20

Ok how about this idea. Of course everyone has a calculator on the phone, somewhere on the desk, and even in the computer, but admit it, its not that easy to use that calculator in the windows. I was thinking since we have so much space on the panel where the touchpad is, why not make a built-in mini calculator with the led screen. Its very much possible would be greatly appreciated by businessman who travel a lot, and you cannot open excel all the time for the formulas.

Let me know if you feel the same...... 7 Comments »

Dual Duty Bluetooth Mouse

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by stratboy Aug 20

I have a Studio 17 and love the built in bluetooth. I purchased a Dell BT mouse (PU705) have used it for a week, and like it very much.

I use my laptop to test a web-app I'm working on. So on my desk, I have a mouse for my dev machine (standard desktop machine) and my awesome bluetooth mouse for my laptop.

I'm always grabbing the wrong mouse.

If the mouse had two BT receivers, and a toggle to switch back and forth, I could pair it with both machines and be the coolest developer in the office.

Seems to me that all the stuff to pull this off is already in the parts bin.

Thanks for listening. 11 Comments »

Flashlight Built-in to the Laptop

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by amaqsood Aug 20

I would like to introduce this idea to our dell manufacturers, I have always wanted that extra light while I am using the laptop. Since we are making webcams, why not add a light to that, which can serve as a flash for those great computer pics, and at the same can work as a table lamp which we have to turn on everytime while we are on bed. And plus not eveyone carries a lamp to their trip in the woods. It would be a great addition, and I guarantee you will get an amazing reponse from the cosumers. I would be the first one to use it.

Let me know how you feel about this idea. 14 Comments »

A "Tech Support" Laptop

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by penguinsa Aug 19

A laptop customised for those of us who need to Tech Support.

For legacy hardware, routers, alarm systems and even some Diesel generators, we need- a serial port.

When multiple racks of servers are using KVM (Keyboard Video Mouse) switches, a laptop with a KVM receiver would be good.

Put the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi together for easy modular removal / replacement. It's a "security" thing. In fact, for secure areas...

Do the same with the Hard Drive, allowing the rest of the laptop to act as a "dumb terminal" as a BIOS option. 2 Comments »

Laptop Keyboard Layout

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by tntlam Aug 19

Please put the DEL, INS, END, etc. keys back in the top-right corner of the keyboard, The first thing I look at in a new laptop is the layout of the keyboard... if it has the counter-intuitive-keys-on-the-right keyboard, I cross it off the list. And right now, most of your laptops are off the list. If this trend continues, you will certainly lose a customer. (Over a stupid keyboard!) I agree, it's absurd... but I REALLY like that interface and I'm sure I'm not alone. This is a deal breaker... fix it, or at least make it an option on your laptops. 2 Comments »

Make PC 8500 RAM and Turbo RAM standard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by wallyhorse Aug 18

This level of RAM (PC 8500, 1.067 GHz) is already being offered on Lenovo's new level of laptops, and is something Dell should also be looking at doing on ALL of its computers (as opposed to the current 800 MHz RAM for desktops and 667 MHz RAM for laptops).

In addition, Dell should also offer a Turbo RAM option (Lenovo also currently offer a 2GB Turbo RAM option) on all of its laptops. 2 Comments »

Aftermarket illuminated keyboard tray

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by redcore Aug 18

I'm actually a bit surprised an aftermarket tech company hasn't come out with this - but it would be pretty cool to buy aftermarket keyboard trays with either lights built into the keys or just on the tray behind the keys. Easy to swap out and could be purchased as an "upgrade" on the site when customizing new laptops - but keeping this aftermarket as well would make it available to current laptop users.

Even just making a lighting kit that can be attached behind the keys on the tray would be cool so long as it can be plugged into something like a fan power port. 1 Comment »

KVM accessory for multi-input monitors

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays submitted by bmastenbrook Aug 18

The most recent displays (like the 2408WFP I'm using) come with a plethora of inputs, which makes it easy to use with multiple machines on a single desk. However, switching the keyboard and mouse can be a bit of a hassle as it involves switching monitor input and unplugging / reconnecting a USB cable to the appropriate computer. While building a keyboard and mouse switch into the monitor is probably a bit too much to ask for a niche need, it occurs to me that this could be cleanly designed as an accessory for the monitor so that source switching on the monitor causes a keyboard/mouse switch. This would be very helpful in multi-machine business and IT environments. 1 Comment »

Fully adaptable (touch-screen) keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by zsych Aug 17

I was looking at the HP Touchsmart, and I realized that normally a touch-screen isn't really something you want. I use the touchpad on my laptop rather than attaching a mouse, because a mouse would require a whole lot of unnecessary movement to use. A touchscreen monitor, for all it's potential coolness is really something similar.

So I suggest an alternative, instead of a keyboard have a touch-screen for input, with multiple possible configurations. It could be a keyboard in any language, or it could be.. the controls for an airplane if you're playing a flight simulator. Having what is essentially a touchscreen for input/keyboard would make it completely customizable. Don't like where back-slash is, change it(that's a common annoyance in shifting between keyboards). The same interface could also contain the mouse touchpad.

One can probably use the normal extended desktop concept to support such an idea, and with multiple touch supported by Vista, you might not even need to develop much software of your own. Writing a windows app that supports touchscreen and simulated a keyboard layout, should be fairly simple. You could even let the keyboard screen be used as a touchscreen if you want, with a button on the side, to launch the keyboard app when you need it.

Personally I'd like to see a very customizable next-gen user graphical user interface in this type of keyboard. Multiple skins, drag-and-drop widgets of various types of controls etc.

Also, one issue that some people have with the iPhone which can be considered to have a similar user interface to this idea. There's no way to know you pressed something or where the boundaries of stuff are by just touching it. Maybe that should be in version 2 of this type of keyboard, but I'd like some way to move certain pixels up, or maybe some kind of mild electrical/magnetic feeling to know that you've pressed something or crossed some sort of boundary(that would make it useful for the blind as well). And while we're on the idea of some kind of physical response, let's think gaming and force feedback. Having some type of vibration under your fingers when you're pushing the throttle up on your flight-sim, could be pretty cool.

So that's my idea. Hope Dell builds it. 5 Comments »

Match E-Module hard drive sizes to internal drives

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by dfliddle Aug 17

The E-Module hard drives are ideal for portable backup, whether used internally or in an E-Modular Bay. However, the drive capacities available for the E-Module do not match the options for the internal drive. Specifically, the 160GB and 250GB sizes are not available, which means that it would be difficult or impossible to backup these internal hard drives to the E-Module drive. Comment »

Dell version of an All-In-One PC in a keyboard.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by kld3 Aug 16

I like the ZPC-GX31 design by Cybernet (specs: Intel Core 2 Quad, 4GB DDR2, 750GB HDD, Internal Wireless LAN) but it needs a decent video card. Dell should come up with a similar design.

Integrated Keyboard / Mouse

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by sirebral Aug 15

This idea just dawned on me. I've been recommending DELL get rid of the touch pad on Laptops and go with touch screen, but the PC is turning into an All In One Entertainment system. The problem i see in the future is Cords and Mice.

It would be a kind feature to take the laptop keyboards with their touch pads and make a Media Center keyboard with a small form factor touch pad integrated.

I also have a question with this idea, if a member could answer that would be great. My studio hybrid has a wireless detect button on the back. Does this mean I can still get a wireless keyboard and mouse later? I hope so. Because when I get me new LCD Monitor / TV Tuner I wouldn't like be stuck to the desk while I watch a big screen. 8 Comments »
