Give all N models the same hardware customization options as the identical non-N options

Dell, Dell Web Site, Desktops, Dimension products, Inspiron products, Linux, Small Business, XPS products, Desktops and Laptops, Laptops submitted by laptoplinux 9:52am

Why is it that the hardware customization options on N models are not identical to the non-N models. For example, the Inspiron 530 and the 530N. The 530 has an option for a wireless internet card. The 530N does not. There are other discrepancies between what is offered on the 530 and what is no offered on the 530N. These are the exact same machines. Same case. Same processor options. Same memory options. Same hard drive options. Yet somethings are left out of the 530N. Why is it this way? Why can they be just as easily on the 530N as well? Don't they come of the same or similar enough assembly line? Comment »

Quad core processors in laptops

Dell submitted by dellrox 7:51am

I think that putting the quad cores in a laoptop would be great for Dell. You would revolutionize the lapto sales, as you would be the first to do it. Desktops have htem and they will be mainstream very shortly. Why not make them in laptops? Please look into this. 6 Comments »

Concerning Microsoft's New Policy of “Vista ONLY”

Operating Systems submitted by freedom_man 1:54am

Within the last few weeks , I heard a radio news broadcast that said that from now on Microsoft will be shipping ONLY Vista to computer makers and that Microsoft will also no longer be selling Windows XP at retail.

While many of us are saddened at this, I have a suggestion.

Discontinue Windows XP, yes, but do so only in the 32-bit versions and make Windows XP Pro available in the 64-bit version as an alternative to Vista.

In my opinion, this would be a real win-win for all parties.

What do you think? 6 Comments »

Laptops power

Laptops submitted by y_eilom Yesterday

As D630 user, I find my self use the laptop as desktop for days (when I'm not on the roads).
I think it'll be nice Dell will give us the option to connect/disconnect battery from power without taking the battery out.
By that, we can extend battery life. Comment »

Make customer support local

Service and Support submitted by hagure Yesterday

Stop exporting customer service. A customer service representative in the same country as the customer is much better equipped to understand the needs/wants of the customer. It's also just good PR.

In that vein, why not make customer service local--patch people into customer service reps in geo. regions as close as possible to where they are calling from? You could market this piggy backing on the shop local trend. Also good PR. Comment »

Refresh with Centrino 2

New Product Ideas, XPS products, Laptops submitted by hagure Yesterday

I have seen other comments re: Dell's silence on new Centrino 2 lines. Dell needs to at least make a press release (or better allow pre-ordering) on their plans for Centrino 2 lines. All of your major competitors have (except Apple, and unfortunately, Apple's marketing scheme isn't going to work for you). What with the Centrino 2 delays, I have been putting off buying a new laptop for several months, and if Dell doesn't come out with something in the next week, I may very well considering going with another company--I wonder how many feel the same. 1 Comment »

Non-Glare High Resolution LED Displays

submitted by anonym Yesterday

Please stop the glossy display nonsence and provide a non-glare display options for all models. If possible with LED backlight, because it is brighter, thinner and less power consuming. I like the XPS M1330 very much, but the glossy display is a real show stopper...

Btw, the glossy finish of the Vostro 1310 case also seems quite pointless to me. 3 Comments »

Improve breakable thin wire in power adapter connector

XPS products, Laptops submitted by tovare Yesterday

In the power adapter for my XPS 1330 there is a small needle-like wire in the (male) connector. This pin easily bends and breaks, requiring replacement of the whole power adapter.

A pin would normally be exposed to artifacts that could bend it during normal use because there isn't any location in the carrying bag, and there is no protective cap to place on the end when transporting the equipment.

I urge you to please look at the power adapter construction and consider one of the following actions:

A. Use a stronger alloy for the 'needle' in the male connector.

B. Provide a small protection cap that can be attaced to the cable (male connector) and easily put on when transporting the adapter. And please make this available to existing owners.

C. Provide a glue-on fixture for the socket which adapts the socket to adifferent and more appropriately designed connector.

Thank you very much ! 1 Comment »

Bring back the Insprion 1420N (again)!

Inspiron products, Linux submitted by zmjjmz Yesterday

Well, after the announcement on Engadget that 8.04 was going on the Dellbuntus, I found some text that confused me.
I quote, from Engadget:
<quote>pre-installed option on the XPS M1330N, Inspiron 1525N and Inspiron 530N</quote>
So I went to the Dell site and sure enough, the 1420N isn't there.
So could you _please_ either let us have the 1420N with 7.10 or just be more transparent about why it doesn't work? (Assuming that's the reason for dropping it; it stopped working.) 8 Comments »

Dell and AMD

Desktops and Laptops submitted by maxius Yesterday

I find it very disheartening that consumer AMD based systems and laptops are not offered by dell at all. I do understand that you need to keep intel happy and amd is not the best performer at this time. Though I believe that is about to change when AMD finally releases its 45nm generation products. Till then I would be happy to see a DELL or XPS or Alienware Laptop based on the new PUMA Platform that was showcased at Computex with all the platform features supported the mobile 3800 series, Hybrid Crossfire X and the XGP port Comment »

Battery Bay Cover for laptops

Laptops submitted by kyles Yesterday

Keeping a li-ion battery charged, or charging all the time isn't good!
http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
Unfortunately, when my D830 is plugged into a wall socket (80% of the time), I can't just take the battery out because not only dose it expose the battery pins to the elements, but the battery also holds a corner rubber foot that if removed makes the laptop wobble on a flat surface. If Dell supplied a battery bay cover, or even a gutted battery shell, customers could then remove there batteries while plugged into a wall outlet so that they don't compromise the life of the battery. 1 Comment »

Vostro Online Support

Service and Support, Vostro products submitted by g4vco Yesterday

Hey - here's a great idea!!
For all users of your Vostro range of laptops - and you must have sold thousands...
How about offering some online support?
Currently, Vostro users have to pay a telephone charge for technical support - how poor is that??? 1 Comment »

Live update of drivers

Service and Support submitted by lingle Yesterday

Sir!

May I draw your attention to your competitor MSI:s website. (http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=downloadindex)

They offer something called "Live Update Online", this offers me an opportunity to download a service (ActiveX) that goes through my computer. This service then offers me an installation or upgrade of all my drivers including the network driver :-). Directly over internet. Maybe this is something for you?

Software submitted by badblood Yesterday

When configuring a new computer for purchase you are given various hardware and software options. You can choose Vista or XP and all the different flavors of each.

Have a series of laptops geared towards students.

Laptops submitted by hollyberry 2 days ago

I think there should be a series of laptops geared towards students looking for a laptop with word processing and internet at a cheaper price. students don't need a fancy laptop with a fancy pricetag. they just need a basic, small laptop that is affordable to them. 4 Comments »

Bare Bones Desktops, Laptops and Servers!

Servers and Storage, Desktops and Laptops submitted by aikiwolfie 2 days ago

A while back when Dell first offered Ubuntu Linux it claimed the offer was aimed at enthusiasts. A really good way of serving the enthusiast market would be to offer bare bones systems. Desktops, laptops and servers.

Obviously we'll need a range of other bits and bobs to put in these bare bones systems to make them useful. So this would also be a good way of supplementing the after market upgrade options Dell offers. RAM, HDDs, SDDs, Flash sticks, displays, keyboards, mice and everything else that goes with a computer.

The idea is to make everything the self-builder needs available in one place from a company that can be trusted. ;o)

This is a win win deal. Enthusiasts get bare bones systems they can build and customize themselves and Dell gets to expand it's after market parts business. There could even be an annual competition to see who can build the best rig. We could even push the envelope as far as a bare bones XPS One. 40" to 52" of course with wall mounting brackets. 1 Comment »
