Please make Ubuntu XPS Notebook cheaper than XPS Vista Notebook

Linux, Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by dki May 26

Hi,
I have tested the price of the default Vista-Notebook XPS M1330 (in Germany) and the Ubuntuversion with the same Configuration. The result was amazing :(:

Vistaversion: 909,00 €
Linuxversion: 923,44 €

Is Vista cheaper than Ubuntu?? I can not imagine.

So my wish: Make Ubuntu-Laptops competitive! 19 Comments »

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet

XPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude. 28 Comments »

XPS M1330: give techs the possibility to upgrade/enhance cooling (by exchanging the thermal pads for officially tailored copper sheets)

XPS products, Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by professa Jul 8

Dear Dell team,

I'm a (largely positive) owner of an XPS M1330 but I have to put it straight:

the cooling concept of the chipset and the GPU (geforce 8400M GS, in my case) is junk. Under load the GPU easily reaches 85 to 90 degrees celsius. I had a tech here lately to replace the motherboard of my M1330 (due to a fried / defective GPU!) who could have easily replaced the ineffective thermal pads with two copper sheets (which, in such a case, would have been provided by Dell and be specifically tailored to fit that notebook). The effectiveness of copper has already been proved by some people out there who have modded their M1330s with copper sheets by themselves (unfortunately loosing their warranty, so that's no option for me).

Is that possible, Dell providing such copper sheets to techs, for *OFFICIAL* replacement for the thermal pads, under warranty? These copper sheets can't be THAT expensive, compared to the significant number of fried GPUs out there.

Thanks for reading and considering my thoughts! :-)

Cheers, Michael 7 Comments »

FIX Quickset

Software, XPS products submitted by mrzero Jul 11

Quickset update and fix...

1. Volume popup is loses screen placement. When first installed, it is in the lower right corner. After reboot, it is moved to the upper left corner of the screen. Very annoying.

2. For XPS laptops, add functionality where selecting a checkbox will disable LEDs (such as the XPS trackpad, speaker and wing LEDs) when on battery power. This should be a easy addition.

Thanks! 1 Comment »

Make 7200 RPM 320GB HD (& other critical items) available on XPS Laptops in Europe

XPS products, Laptops submitted by pwl2706 Jul 10

It seems that mnany components that are available in the US are not available in Europe...

A case in point would be the 320GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) with Free Fall Sensor which is available on DELL US for the XPS M1530, but not in the UK.

Also, in the US, LED backlit screens are availabe but not in the EU/UK (see High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch LED LCD (1440x900) & 2.0 M).

Another critical missing item is the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT which is available in the US but not in Europe (specifically the UK)

When will we be able to configuere an XPS laptop in Europe with the same options that are available in the US? 2 Comments »

Improve breakable thin wire in power adapter connector

XPS products, Laptops submitted by tovare Yesterday

In the power adapter for my XPS 1330 there is a small needle-like wire in the (male) connector. This pin easily bends and breaks, requiring replacement of the whole power adapter.

A pin would normally be exposed to artifacts that could bend it during normal use because there isn't any location in the carrying bag, and there is no protective cap to place on the end when transporting the equipment.

I urge you to please look at the power adapter construction and consider one of the following actions:

A. Use a stronger alloy for the 'needle' in the male connector.

B. Provide a small protection cap that can be attaced to the cable (male connector) and easily put on when transporting the adapter. And please make this available to existing owners.

C. Provide a glue-on fixture for the socket which adapts the socket to adifferent and more appropriately designed connector.

Thank you very much ! 1 Comment »

Eliminate M1330 heat related failures

XPS products submitted by hkt Jun 18

I'd like to bring to your attention to a design problem with the Dell XPS M1330 with the nVidia 8400 GS option.

1) PROBLEM: The heatpipe exhaust vent blocks up with dust that caused the overheating to repeatedly burnout the GPU thus having the motherboard replaced.

SUGGESTION: Dell support engineers should be made aware to blow clean the heatpipe vents when doing a motherboard replacement to avoid repeated burnouts.

2) PROBLEM: Using a thermal pad to transfer heat from the nVidia GPU to the heatpipe is not efficient enough.

SUGGESTION: I have replaced thermal pad with a copper shim to better transfer the heat. This brought down the GPU core temp. from an idle 65C down to 56C and peak temp of 91C to 71C. Observing this, it is a fairly simple revision to the heatpipe assembly to better mate the GPU to it without the thermal pad. Possibly extending the GPU heatsink further down by 1.5mm and mating it with thermal paste. The spring loaded mechanism can still acommodate for thermal expansion.

I've observed that the M1530 eliminated the issue by not using the thermal pads and directly mating the copper pipe to the GPU.

Thread with contributions from others and myself indicating how to rectify the problem.

Refresh with Centrino 2

New Product Ideas, XPS products, Laptops submitted by hagure Yesterday

I have seen other comments re: Dell's silence on new Centrino 2 lines. Dell needs to at least make a press release (or better allow pre-ordering) on their plans for Centrino 2 lines. All of your major competitors have (except Apple, and unfortunately, Apple's marketing scheme isn't going to work for you). What with the Centrino 2 delays, I have been putting off buying a new laptop for several months, and if Dell doesn't come out with something in the next week, I may very well considering going with another company--I wonder how many feel the same. 1 Comment »

Copy new features on the Studio back to the XPS line

XPS products submitted by jeopardy Jun 27

Just a brief idea;

Some of the new Studio features should be copied back to the XPS line. These include:-

- LED Displays (still unavailable on M1530 in UK)

- new MediaDirect icon/button (latest design standardised across all Inspiron/Studio/XPS products, if you're wondering why, some of my friends often mistake it for a "Home" button which they thought would launch Internet Explorer..)

- backlit keyboards (if space permits.. would be fantastic to see that on the M1330) 2 Comments »

Please stop using cheap LCD panels on your flagship XPS laptop line.

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by tcpaulh Jun 3

Please stop using cheap LCD panels on your flagship XPS laptop line.

For example the M1530 although specified with 90-100 degree vertical viewing angles, the reality is that there is at best a 15-20 degree vertical viewing angle before colour inversion occurs.

Vertical viewing angles at present do not appear to conform to stated specifications!

Dell have been promising better viewing angles since 2002 with Ultrasharp screens but these screens are still not available across the XPS line of laptops.

Please sort it out Dell and stop using the cheapest screen technology in your premium products.

Thank you. 9 Comments »

Matte (NOT TrueLife) Display on XPS m1330

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by mw 06/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

The XPS m1330 seems to be the perfect machine, aside from a few imperfections (no Gigabit Ethernet, for example). However, there is one feature that is an absolute dealbreaker for me--the glossy TrueLife screen. I remember the day before the shiny screens, and what a beautiful day that was.

If the XPS m1330 were available with a matte option (along with LED backlighting, of course), I would order one right now. I just don't think I can deal with the TrueLife panel.

LED Backlit Displays for Higher Resolutions for XPS M1530

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by whitefrost May 14

The release of the LED backlit 1440 x 900 display is great, but needs to be expanded to higher resolutions most notably the 1680 x 1050 resolution which a large number of people use and are most comfortable with. It would not be a threat to the M1730 as you can keep the LED Full HD 1920 x 1200 for it alone. 6 Comments »

XPS M1530 Product Red w/ LED

XPS products, Laptops submitted by sgogeta4 Jun 28

Why doesn't Dell offer the XPS M1530 15.4" LED WXGA+ option with the Product Red? I've chatted with 5 XPS salespeople through the online chat and over the phone and none of them can explain to me why they cannot let me configure it the way I want and why there isn't on the online configuration. The best explanation I've gotten is "Sorry, it's just not available for our product red promotion." Maybe offer the red cover for an additional price? I hope a mod or someone from Dell can help me with this! 4 Comments »

XPS Laptops

XPS products submitted by gamer128 Jul 6

I think this is the one question that most mobile gamers want to know. Will Dell make a laptop like the M1530 that is a gaming laptop? I don't mean like high end, just a laptop that can do well with most PC games out there. Think...imagine if Dell could partner up with NVIDIA to make a graphics card that is powerful to handle...like Crysis! And that when that graphics card gets old, or the motherboard, you could just get an upgrade just like the desktops. 9 Comments »

XPS notebook feature refresh

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by atxguy512 Jun 22

With the pending release of the "Studio" Line of Inspiron notebooks, it appears that Dell is looking to take back the notebook market. There are new design features that put the "Studio" notebooks on par with Macbook Pros... slimmer/update design, slot loading DVD +/- RW and/or Blu-ray drive, BACK LIT keyboard, eSATA drives and a host of color options.

For info on "Studio" Dell see: http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/15/even-more-on-dells-studio-1536-1536-and-th...

I'm an XPS fan, so please consider bringing the same options to the m1330, m1530... especially the BACK LIT keyboard. This is the one feature I love about Mac(s). Also, consider uping the video options on the m1530 to offer a 512MB option from nVidia. 2 Comments »

Reduce call wait times for XPS Support

Service and Support, XPS products submitted by reptile_abhi Jul 1

Please reduce call wait times for XPS users since all worldwide calls are routed to Malaysia.

Perhaps you could create an alternate center and/or add more staff?

Current call wait times from India (Delhi) are 60 mins+ on 5 repeated attempts over a period of a week 1 Comment »
