small LCD panels at a reasonable cost

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas, Servers and Storage, Small Business, XPS products, Vostro products, Precision Workstations, OptiPlex products submitted by undead999 Jul 4

I dont really need 2 monitors attached to my system full time, nor do i have desk space. A small LCD that is 10 or 12 inches could be usefull as a secondary monitor for keeping status of my server(s), game server while i'm gaming, monitoring email up, system perfromance and so on. While not being used as a secondary display it could act as a stand alone photo frame, maybe even have a wall mount.

I work in I.T. so i can see a lot of other uses beyobd the desktop. It would also be usefull as a prtable screen that can easily be taken into the server room if remote access is failing. taking to a deskside or to a customers site to troubleshoot video probelms without having to buy a replacement monitor before troubleshooting.

I know there are a few product s on the market that fille this need, but they are pricey compared to a basic 17" or 19" LCD, one is made my coby, which retails fro more than a basic 19" dell widescreen, I dont associate quality to coby products.

This would be sold as an option and/or accessory , not as standard equipment. Comment »

Add removeable drive trays to system configuration

Desktops, Dimension products, New Product Ideas, Small Business, Vostro products, Desktops and Laptops submitted by silver Jul 4

I have two kids which combine with the requisite digital still and video cameras and digital audio to make for a whole lot of data to backup. To make life a little easier and less frustrating I've installed drive trays and secondary drives in all of our systems. To make a backup I simply turn the computer off, turn the keyswitch on, reboot, make my backup with Acronis True Image, shut down the system, turn off the drive and finally reboot the computer. This is so much faster and more dependable than USB drives. 5 Comments »

Offer a 14.1" Vostro notebook PC again.

Vostro products submitted by winoffice Jun 21

http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/vostronb?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s...

I am really disappointed that Dell is no longer offering a 14.1" Vostro notebook PC and has replaced that with a 13.3" one. I have compared 14.1" notebooks with 13.3" ones, and 14.1" is the better screen size by far. Please Dell, offer a 14.1" Vostro notebook again. I do not want to be forced into buying another notebook line to get a 14.1" screen size. 2 Comments »

Bring back higher end graphics to Vostro 1500/1510

Vostro products submitted by jsize Jun 29

I was able to select 256MB Nvidia 8600MGT graphics for 1500 and 1510 series, now the option is only 128M 8400GS.

Please bring back those options, or even better, bring 9000M series to the Vostro line. Comment »

Ubuntu on vostro

Linux, Vostro products, Laptops submitted by tashmooclam 07/21/07

I believe Dell should load ubuntu linux on the vostro laptops for business use.

Linux makes good sense for business. Also, free applications for business like openoffice, etc. make sense for business.

More security in Linux also makes sense for business.

I think business would adopt Linux if Dell provided the equipment loaded with Ubuntu.

I would have bought a pre-loaded ubuntu inspiron laptop, but I don't like glossy screens. 4 Comments »

Bring back 1680x1050 screen rez back on Vostro 1510

Monitors and Displays, Vostro products submitted by audiofree May 27

For some reason the 2 upgrades for screen resolution on the new Vostros is either 1400x900 (Same as the 14’ model) or USXGA which is 1900x1200.

For most people 1900x1200 is too small on a 15’ screen please bring back the SXGA+ back on the 1510 like you have it on the 1500. I see no reason dell would have taken that very useful option away on their new laptops. 1 Comment »

Bring back the graphics card options on the Vostro 1700.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Vostro products submitted by winoffice May 27

Now I can only get a 128 MB graphics card on it, and even then only when I select the most expensive configuration. I remember that I could recently choose a 128 MB or a 256 MB graphics card on the 1700 no matter which configuration I chose (there are three original configurations; see here). Bring back the 128 MB and 256 MB graphics card option on all of the 1700 configurations. 2 Comments »

Linux on Vostro?

Linux, Vostro products submitted by dfrandin Mar 8

I recently bought a Vostro 1400, which came with Vista Home Basic.. I'd MUCH have preferred to get the system with Ubuntu installed on, but alas it appears Dell isn't planning to sell Vostro laptop/desktop systems with preinstalled Linux. Of course, the system now has Ubuntu installed on it, and other than a few nits on getting the webcam/hibernate/suspend working, it was a piece of cake. I'd just have preferred to not pay the "Microsoft Tax" on this purchase... Is there any plans to supply Linux on the Vostro line of systems? 16 Comments »

Help out with Linux drivers

Operating Systems, Vostro products submitted by sathiyaneo Apr 10

I bought a vostro 1000 notebook loaded with Vista Home basic. I recently installed SUSE 10.3 and later Ubuntu 7.10. On both occasions i'd to curse myself for not having proper drivers for browsing net. Yes... I develop problems while surfing net. My network cards driver isn't recognised it seems. Can any body help me get out of this.
Why don't dell ship their drivers developed indigenously or supply drivers through net? 2 Comments »

Make a touchpad Vostro Notebook

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Vostro products submitted by ccpljat May 27

I think a lot of small businesses would like to see a computer geared specifically toward small businesses that has the capability of a touch screen. This seems to be the future of computing, what with Microsoft Touch and the mobile touch devices. You could even make it an option to add to the already available Vostro 1310. This shouldn't be terribly difficult. 1 Comment »

Use Latitude keyboard layout in Vostro laptops (standard Ins/Del/Home/End/PgUp/PgDown position)

Inspiron products, Vostro products, Laptops submitted by donut May 17

Latitude laptops have a pretty nice key layout.

I think Vostro laptops, which are also business-oriented, should either use the exact same keyboard as Latitudes, or at least the same layout. The Vostro keyboard has several deficiencies compared with the Latitude ones.

For example the Latitude D830 keyboard here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/imagebank/notebooks/lat_d830.jpg
(Warning: very large picture. If anyone has the URL for a picture with a more head-on view of the keyboard, please post here.)

The Ins, Del, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down keys are in the same 3x2 layout as a standard desktop PC keyboard, at the top right of the keyboard. So it will be easy to adapt between using a desktop keyboard and the laptop one.

Also, the right part of Caps Lock is recessed to reduce the chance of accidentally pressing it, and the cursor keys are the same size as letter keys. (It's not perfect though; who knows why the Windows menu key is at the top rather than to the right of the space bar?)

By comparison, see the Vostro 1710 keyboard here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/imagebank/notebooks/vostro_171...
(Warning: another large picture)

Those six keys are in non-standard positions, in particular the PgUp, PgDown, Home and End keys are all on the bottom row underneath the numeric keypad. The Caps Lock key is not recessed, and the cursor keys are smaller than normal. (At least the Windows menu key is in the right place!) 1 Comment »

Docking Station for Vostro

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Latitude products, Vostro products submitted by coachcg 07/21/07

Vostro looks like a good system and has some strengths over Latitude like the enhanced integrated sound, longer battery life, and better screen option, but lacks docking capability. So I went with Latitude, but I could really use those features mentioned. Could Dell look into adding those options to Latitude notebooks or adding a docking option to Vostro?

Proper business Vostro

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Vostro products submitted by davidc May 20

I like most of the options for the Vostro range but like 'Oiver' I need more - please!

The 9 cell battery is not constantly an option, it appears once a blue moon (at least for the UK) but should be permanent.

The Display needs to have a no cost matt option for WUXGA similar to the M6300

Finally the graphics card needs to have a better option range - for me up to 8800m GTX and/or up to Quadro 3600. It seems the 8800m GTX consumes half the power of a Quadro 3600 so if you can accommodate the Quadro 3600 a 8800m GTX should be comparatively easy to cool

Our company does not require the support built into the M6300 package - a comparable Vostro would suit us down to the ground - how about it?

The Vostro is in your business class - make it fit please!

Thanks, David. 2 Comments »

Vostro Notebook needs a lcd mounted keyboard light

New Product Ideas, Vostro products submitted by ward733 07/30/07

One of the compitition has had this since p2 systems were introduced and still have it incorperated in there new systems. It is a Fn switchable white led monted on the lcd bezil that assists keyboard visibility in lower light situations . This light would also assist the web camera operation in lower light situations also..I'm sure it is patented for one but if you put two one on each side might allow for a new patent.. I've used this option and it really works well... 3 Comments »

Higher Screen Resolution for Vostro 1310

Monitors and Displays, Vostro products, Laptops submitted by ccpljat May 3

I know it is a 13.1" screen. But can't you put a higher resolution on it? I want a thinner and lighter notebook, but I can't sacrifice my screen resolution. It would take away from my productivity. That is what we are all after...right? 4 Comments »
