New Dual Headed Hard Drive....just imagination by me

New Product Ideas, Servers and Storage, Desktops and Laptops submitted by aniket 8:15am

just imagine a hard drive with 2 heads
I got this idea bcz of long time taking virus scan process, moving files from one partition to another on same hard disk, DVD burning process, DVD image creation process & defragmention process.
in these five daily processes, computer gets slow
I think with dual head,,, one head will do one of this application & another head will remain free for our work, media enjoyment like watching movies, listening songs n etc.

specially while moving files on different partitions on same drive & defragmention process, one head will catch files from one location & another head will write those files on required location
there will be no need of ram while moving files as today's hard drives needs

I hope ,u all hav understand my concept on hard drives

it's just like core 2 duo processors
I m expecting this concept from all hard drive manufacturers...specially from my favourite "western digital"

they may also create 4 headed like core 2 quad processors

small LCD panels at a reasonable cost

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas, Servers and Storage, Small Business, XPS products, Vostro products, Precision Workstations, OptiPlex products submitted by undead999 Jul 4

I dont really need 2 monitors attached to my system full time, nor do i have desk space. A small LCD that is 10 or 12 inches could be usefull as a secondary monitor for keeping status of my server(s), game server while i'm gaming, monitoring email up, system perfromance and so on. While not being used as a secondary display it could act as a stand alone photo frame, maybe even have a wall mount.

I work in I.T. so i can see a lot of other uses beyobd the desktop. It would also be usefull as a prtable screen that can easily be taken into the server room if remote access is failing. taking to a deskside or to a customers site to troubleshoot video probelms without having to buy a replacement monitor before troubleshooting.

I know there are a few product s on the market that fille this need, but they are pricey compared to a basic 17" or 19" LCD, one is made my coby, which retails fro more than a basic 19" dell widescreen, I dont associate quality to coby products.

This would be sold as an option and/or accessory , not as standard equipment. Comment »

Low profile, solid state servers

Servers and Storage, Small Business, Simplify IT submitted by arbitraryconstant 2 days ago

We've had great success with lower profile servers internally and with clients. Some examples of OEMs that sell these machines:

http://www.soekris.com/
http://www.portwell.com/

There's a few key attributes that define these sorts of machines, and give them their advantages over more conventional entry servers, if an entry server doesn't cost much more:

-Cheap SSDs as the default storage (typically compact flash). If there's not much I/O, these are less of a maintenance headache than RAID. Hard drives are handy if they're optional.
-Lower overall system power. These machines use embedded or mobile CPUs for the most part, and this also leads to fewer fans (or none). This makes the system quiet, allows it to be deployed in poorly ventilated areas, reduces power usage in a rack, etc.
-Serial console in addition to VGA, since a display and keyboard aren't always convenient if the machine is in a closet somewhere (Linux can handle this). Many organizations are used to dealing with serial consoles on their switches, so this isn't that big a deal.

We've used systems like this as file servers, various things that don't virtualize well like busy DNS servers, firewalls, etc. The power available in lower power platforms has even expanded to the point where Windows servers aren't even a problem.

The big problem with Soekris and Portwell and OEMs like them are that they really leave you to your own resources in a lot of ways. The documentation is highly technical but doesn't cover OS support, and they don't offer fast turnaround support contracts or supported OSes and software. Ultimately this is worthwhile if you're using more than a few of the machines, but an OEM like Dell would be welcome because the support would be much better for shops too small to do the homework necessary to do support in-house. Dell Computers with e-sata ports

Servers and Storage, Desktops and Laptops submitted by chasrome Jun 13

Dell needs to supply and announce the availability of desktop, notebook, and servers with e-sata ports to which the many available external drives can be attached. RAID (0 and 1) could be available especially for servers. The ports should support six foot cables (not just three foot). Comment »

Re-think & redesign rack-mount methods

Servers and Storage submitted by phubert Jun 25

A recent suggestion called for improvement of the "cable management" arms for rack-mount servers.

Earlier, I suggested improving cabinet design and cable management.

What are the issues:

1-airflow/cooling
2-airflow/filtration
3-reducing cable clutter
4-ease-of-maintenance for rack-mounted systems
5-ease of cabinet movement when needed

Perhaps both the rack-mount _systems_ AND the cabinets need re-thinking.

Are there strong, lighter weight materials (rigidity, strength, heat conductivity?) for cabinets _and_ server cases?

How can both cooling and dust issues be addressed??

IF no server is to be pulled-out for maintenance while connected to power, how can its cables be held together for easy reattachment??? 7 Comments »

Dell Home Server

Servers and Storage submitted by plafay Jun 16

Hello,

I would be very interesting of Dell based Microsoft Home Server.
To have the best usage per watt, cool features could be :
- Atom processoirs
- 2,5' HDD (up to 4)
- Close to 10w in idle
- No more than 30w in use
Of course, the price is important and it has to compete with the Nas systems.
For example, I'm ready to buy at $600 :
- Atom processor
- 1 Gb of Ram
- 2*320 Gb HDD 6 Comments »

Server Cable Management Arms

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Servers and Storage submitted by retro77 Jun 24

The cable arms on the servers are very loose, they hang down instead of flat. Also they build up a lot heat, impeding airflow out the back of the rack.

If you can make these slimmer and tighten them up, that would be great. I rarely open a server up while it is powered on, so I am thinking about taking these out completely.

Thank you. 1 Comment »

Power Connect Feature request, two easy features

Servers and Storage submitted by andrewc Jun 27

Two features for command line operation

1- Ignore any text after "config" to enter configuration mode.
This to ease use by people used to Cisco switches.

2- Allow show running-config to be postfixed by an interface name to only display the configuration of an individual interface.
An easy modification to improve overall usability. Comment »

Add an SSD HD option to all notebooks configurations

Servers and Storage, Laptops submitted by solostian 07/06/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

As notebook mobility is becoming more and more important, battery autonomy and NOT available disk space is becoming a major decisive factor.

It would thus be very useful to be able to build a notebook without the standard power guzzling hard drive.

A Solid State Device HD would lower heat generation and lower power consumption.

Great idea! We are already offering SSDs on some of our products. http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/06/26/19139.aspx

Offer Solid State Hard Drive with more Capacity and lower price

Servers and Storage, Desktops and Laptops submitted by nsenman May 16

I think solid state drives are way too overpriced and not large enough for the amount of storage people need now a days. People would love to have the 100+ GB of storage Hard Drives along with a less expensive price, comparable to the current SATA. 3 Comments »

Ethernet KVM - Network Video Card

Servers and Storage submitted by joeaguy 02/19/07

Provide a video card that connects to a network instead of a monitor.

KVM cables and switches can be expensive, and take up extra room in the data center. Most servers don't need much in the way of videa, although Windows pretty much requires that you have a graphic card and attached monitor to be useful. A video card that has an ethernet jack for sending the screen over a private ethernet network would elminiate the need for KVM switches, and for keeping monitors around in the data center as any laptop will do.

The card should provide multiple ways to connect, including at least one existing standard, such as VNC, X Windows, or Windows Remote Login, and an all web based option, that uses either a Java applet or Flash movie to display the screen in a browser. If some proprietary client is needed, at least write versions for Windows, Linux, and MacOS X, and/or Java. 1 Comment »

Promote Windows Home Server Bigtime

Servers and Storage submitted by gcreese 02/17/07

Microsoft is coming out with Windows Home Server this year, which will allow households to backup and manage their house PCs from a single spot. At this point, a lot of households are in this situation (e.g., with two adults and a child, we have three laptops, a desktop, and three PDAs). Get out in front of the curve on this one (HP made its announcement at the CES Show), talk about it, promote the fact that you will offer it, and in the vein of the other "make the website easier to use" suggestions, explain how Windows Home Server is something to consider for a family going digital.

Also, offer a Windows Home Server discount to current customers who've ordered two or more PCs from Dell in the past five years. You have the data to run an effective, targeted marketing campaign. Use it! 168 Comments »

Smoother/More rounded Chassis Design

Servers and Storage, Desktops and Laptops submitted by leonardo_corezola 05/30/07

I think Dell should design more rounded and smoother chassis for their desktops/notebooks/servers. That's the impression I get from Apple chassis designs and all their stuff when I see them. Some Dell designs are ok, but they look a bit old. Look at iMac/iPOD/iPhone - they all follow the same style of design. It looks nice when we see them. And probably that's their biggest differential when customer are "eye-choosing" a computer/acessory.

Just do it simple, smooth, light. An Eye-Candy.

** If you like the idea, please promote. **
Thanks :D 23 Comments »

"Hot Swap Hard Drive" for both the Inspiron & XPS series

Inspiron products, Servers and Storage, XPS products submitted by hal2001 Apr 17

It saves data, time, headaches and work. I have been using a Hot Swap HD in my jobsite computer for over two years and it's a lifesaver. Store drive off-site in a safe location and you can still save on-line w/ the Dell DataSafe program or others if you care to. My job site will not allow on-line storgage. I'm not a personal fan club member of on-line storgage either, encrypted or not it's still on someone Server. I want my Data backup as close to 100% safe as possible. 1 Comment »
