Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Laptops submitted by jervis961 May 29

I didn't notice this last night as I was checking out the pictures of the new Dell Mini but it was pointed out by JamesWeb on Dell's "yourblog" that the Dell logo is upside down.

Please don't leave the logo like that, it looks bad. 52 Comments »

Matte (non-glossy) screen option on Studio laptops

Laptops submitted by blomster Jun 26

Please add the OPTION of a matte screen to the new Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptops -- preferably to all of the available resolution and backlight versions. Glossy displays are a deal-breaker for me. 4 Comments »

Paint that doesn't rub off and is certified non-toxic/allergenic

Laptops submitted by ninjagecko Jul 2

== Non-rub-off paint ==

People who use their computers often will find the paint very quickly rubs off on where their hands rest, where they touch the trackpad (in models without the mouse-stick), where they touch the mouse buttons, and where they touch the keys.

Please do not use shiny metallic paint or other things that easily rub off (or if users like metallic paint, make sure to coat it in something that will never rub off).

== Non-toxic paint ==

Also, a user's hands are constant contact with a computer, and the plastic (and chemicals inside the plastic) slowly rub off onto one's hands. Thus it is very important that the materials are not toxic.

Of course Dell did their due diligence on non-toxic components, most likely trusting the material specifications... but who did the testing for the material specifications? Did independent labs do carcinogenicity / mutagenicity assays?

Dell can make an industry-leading move by marketing certified non-toxic maybe non-allergenic components.

Any laptop keyboard will literally disintegrating right into a user's possibly-sweaty hands over the course of years, and as such, assumptions that "plasticizers will stay in the plastic and not leech out" cannot be made. It would be good if 1) not only if the components did not rub/flake off, but also 2) that extensive tests were done on every single chemical used in the plastics and paint.

An easy way around this is to find a non-toxic, non-rub-off, and transparent coating and coat UI components in that. 3 Comments »

clearer warranty regarding LCD, and other things

Laptops submitted by ninjagecko Jul 2

I've seen the screens of many competitors's laptops break down, and sometimes it isn't included in the warranty. For example:

[ begin conversation : ]

student: "Half my LCD screen suddenly died. I did absolutely nothing whatsoever since I cleanly shut my computer down last night."

customer support: "Sorry, that's not covered under warranty. It's accidental damage. You'll have to pay $500."

[ : end conversation ]

I'm afraid of buying laptops now without a very statement in the warranty about what is included in the warranty and what is not. For example is the battery included? (usually not) Is the power strip included? (probably not but it should be)

Personally I firmly believe an LCD screen should be included in the warranty.

I've also heard of cold damage sometimes being a problem; that could in part be addressed with a removable warning label. 5 Comments »

Light up keyboards for business laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Small Business, Laptops submitted by derricktwo Jun 24

I'm fortunate enough to have made it in this industry without really knowing how to type. I can type fairly fast, but I have to look at the keys while I'm doing so. I highly doubt I am the only person that needs to do this. I noticed that the Alienware notebooks have an option to add a light up keyboard. I think this would a great feature to have on Dells business class laptops. This would allow people to work in bed without needing to turn on the lights, or during night flights for a business trip. Ubuntu on Studio Notebooks

Linux, Laptops submitted by joshhendo 3 days ago

The new Dell Studio laptops look great! Taking the best design features from many other Dell products, and put them all into one.

This laptop actually looks like it should run Linux (that is the first thing I thought when I saw it). I don't know why I say that, but it just does. So, why not give it ago? I don't have a Studio, though I suspect it shouldn't take too much to get Ubuntu working (may need one or two drivers written, but from my experience with Dell laptops and Ubuntu, most things work well).

This is one of the products I would particularly like to see Ubuntu as an option to be pre-inatlled on if Ubuntu can't be an option on all models. 2 Comments »

Vertical Laptop Cradle/Docking Station

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by thebittersea Jul 2

When I want to use my external monitor, keyboard and mouse my docked laptop gets into the way.

Often time, I need to push it out of the way. It would be really cool if we can vertically dock our laptop like a book on a bookshelf to save some table space.

something like this, but for laptops.

Produce a laptop that can be used on a lap

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by oligarch Jun 24

Laptops have grown to be unuseable comfortably on a lap due to heat, screen position and keyboard ergonomics. I would like to retain the power of current offerings to handle video, computation and average games, but to be light and easily useable without a tray/cooler and to still have a good screen size (say 15" or so).
As power efficiency gains are always used up by more powerful processors and more complex software I do not expect power consumption to be massively less than today's average Inspiron or Latitude, so the cooling system needs to be redesigned so the base is insulated from the lap and cooling air is directed away from the body.
The screen should be mounted securely but it should be possible to raise the viewing height using some sort of cantilever mechanism. Alternatively it could be dismounted to place on a coffee table and again elevated using the same mechanism and communicate with a wireless or other means.
One possible design could use a touch screen in the base replacing the need for a keyboard. allowing use with or without the other screen.
It could be sold wth or without the demountable screen and could also be used with a much larger separate wireless monitor and /ro wireless media server. Comment »

Allow your customers to change the colour of the laptop lid

Laptops submitted by programatix Yesterday

I'm seeing that more and more colours are offered by Dell (after I purchased my laptop) and it really hurt seeing the colour I wanted so much finally being offered but is out of my reach.

It would be great if Dell allows customers to change the colour of the laptop lid (maybe with a small price) after the system is purchased. 11 Comments »

Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Light-Up Dell Logo

Laptops submitted by brokencrystal Jun 29

Make use of the LCD back-light on Dell notebooks by allowing some of the light to escape out of the back (cover) through the Dell logo causing it to light up bright white. You could make it light up any color to match the notebooks color scheme by using filters (different color plastic) while designing the covers. For example: You purchase a red notebook, you have the option of a white, red, blue color light on your Dell logo. You could also save $15.00 by selecting no light in the logo. While this is mostly for cosmetic, advertisement, and branding purposes, the light on the back could indicate that the notebook is turned on, off, or in power save mode from the back of the unit. 6 Comments »

Add Programable Touch Buttons to Laptops

Laptops submitted by james-94 Jun 27

Where the capacitive media control buttons are why not add maybe 4 or 5 programable buttons to launch applications. They could just be numbered 1,2,3,4,5 and each one is able to be programed to run any application etc. that you want.

I got this idea after I read jeopardy's idea here and thought instead to just add programable buttons instead of replacing existing ones. 2 Comments »

Better Graphic Card Options in the new Studio 17

Laptops submitted by steve123 Jun 26

Well the new Dell Studio laptops have been officially released... This was the laptop i was waiting for.

Here is a review - http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4471

Anyways, if you look at dell.co.uk you can customise it. WHY WHY does it only come with a 256MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3650 graphic card!

According to this site, http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

My 2 1/2 year old nvidia 7900gs performs better than this!!

Very disappointing as i was waiting to buy this 17" laptop, What to do now.... 5 Comments »

Small Laptops

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by jolorraine Jul 1

I would like to see from Dell an ultra micro computer. Something small to fit in your purse. I saw one months ago, but it only had Linux OS. The smaller I have seen on Dell was a 12 inch years ago. Is there something Dell can consider? 7 Comments »
