How about another update on the highest voted ideas.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Jun 19

It seems many of the highest voted Ideas are the most neglected by Dell

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office (currently with 138079 points) has been one of the top-5-highest-voted Ideas on IdeaStorm since Feb 07. It has no "Status" regarding whether it's in progress, or rejected; and the only comments from Dell were just one employee's personal opinion.

No OS Preloaded (with 85050 points), has also been one of the top-5-highest for over a year. It's status is the same partial implementation (available on a couple models) that has been true from Dell since long before IdeaStorm was around (2004, if I recall). Clearly the Idea is popular because people want to see it on more models. Rather than just labeling the Idea as "partially implemented as always" - could you give some update on the progress on this Idea.

Firefox instead of IE (with 115593 points) has also been a top-5 idea for over a year. With the recent release of FireFox 3 - along with great press from the technology and business industry alike, another update on this idea would be very welcome. The recent Forbes article Why Firefox Matters clearly sees Firefox as the industry leader, and Wall Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal explicitly states that Firefox 3.0 Is the Best Browser for Web. Surely Dell would want to offer the best for their customers, no? 41 Comments »

When you ask for suggestions try responding to them

Dell Community, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 3 days ago

This Idea is 2 fold.

First you created a website for customers to submit ideas and hardy ever give feedback. There are currently 14 ideas on the front page that haven't been tagged yet. Dell tells us that you talk about these top ideas 1 - 2 times a week. How hard is it to tag an idea after you talk about it?

Second you post an article on Direct 2 Dell about the new Dell home page and ask for suggestions. I posted a reply yesterday afternoon with links to several Ideas I had posted over the last year on the topic. Not only did I never get a response on any of them on IdeaStorm but they get ignored on Direct 2 Dell as well.

Another comment from Michael Dell on Ideastorm.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Jun 30

It's been well over a year since Micheal Dell commented on IdeaStorm. It was nice to see his comments, since that made it look like IdeaStorm was really valued all the way up in Dell. Starbuck's CEO has posted more recently than that on their ideastorm, and some of Dell's competitors are very open in interacting with their users on their blogs many times a month.

Back in March 2007, when Michael Dell made his first first comment on IdeaStorm he gave the quite encouraging comment:

Thank you to all of our community for your ideas and suggestions! We are listening and learning a great deal and changing our company with your ideas.
But for the past year there's no sign that he cares anymore.

Just so we know this site still matters to Dell, have Michael Dell come by at least once a year and comment on the ten highest voted ideas so we know the votes mean something too. Even if his only comment is "I can't comment on this one", we'd at least know he's aware of what the top voted ideas are. 7 Comments »

Show how many promoted and demoted not talking about the names..

IdeaStorm submitted by mathew_rankin Jul 1

This idea is simple. Beside each vote, show how many demoted and how many promoted...

Example:

50

-10 / + 40 Votes

This will give us a better understanding of how many like the idea dn how many dont. Sure a long list of names can tell us, but its nice to have an official number 3 Comments »

limit the number of new idea submitions withing a 24 hour period

IdeaStorm submitted by undead999 Jul 1

I see a lot of what i consider spam posting going on, obscure ideas and nonsense ideas getting posted. One poster will post 5 or more ideas that are duplicates or not in Dell's line of business, this forces good ideas to to page 2 or 3 where they may not get the attention/votes they deserve. I think each uses should be allowed to post 1 or 2 ideas within any 24 hour period. 8 Comments »

When voted for an idea, the idea will then move off the recent items/popluar items list on to "recent voted list"

IdeaStorm submitted by mathew_rankin Jul 2

If you voted for an idea on recent ideas or popluar items, the next time you go to that page the idea will be moved to a recent voted page.

this is helpfull when going through ideas and your not looking aty ideas you already voted on... 8 Comments »

Do not merge ideas until you can unmerge them.

IdeaStorm submitted by winoffice Jun 21

There have been several incidents of IdeaStorm moderators merging ideas that are not in fact duplicates. Therefore, I suggest that ideas not be merged until you are able to unmerge them. 17 Comments »

Make the "recent ideas" the default page

IdeaStorm submitted by ccpljat Jun 7

I think this is what most people are interested in looking at. The popular ideas page doesn't change too much. But new ideas are constantly showing up. I for one go there first. 1 Comment »

Offer IdeaStormers To R&D Their Own Ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by simon_n Jun 19

IdeaStorm is a fertile breeding ground for ideas that helps foster valuable creativity.
The problem is that lots of the good ideas and the people suggesting them seem to get forgotten about because Dell hasn't got a team for dealing with them.

Dell could offer IdeaStormers the opportunity to research and develop the most popular ideas. 2 Comments »

Need better ways to get ideas reviewed and not get lost in the noise

IdeaStorm submitted by gerrygiese Jun 11

What I wonder is based on the volume of "ideas" coming in (many of which seem duplicative, inane, or noise-level non-ideas), how can a more valid topic get more traffic to see if it really withstands community review? I think some of the stuff comes in so fast that many ideas never really get reviewed unless somebody is willing to scroll through pages and pages of recent "ideas" to find them.

I'd like to see a new tab or tabs dedicated to items that got more positive votes than negative, maybe at least a 3:1 ratio?. But these ideas are still under a certain threshold, either something like less than 200, or that have not received X number of votes in the past week.

The "ideas in action" weekly recaps are one way for dell employees to promote certain ideas. Can dell employees vote for ideas? If they can, and I think they should, since it's their company, and their votes should be worth more (20? 50?). If we create an idea and a dell employee likes it, why shouldn't they be able to promote it? Dell employees can obviously help sort the wheat from the chaff, so I say let 'em do it.

I might draw the line at letting dell employees creating ideas -- they have their own process for that. But on the other hand, I've heard of plenty of times where an employee had an idea but their manager thought it was stupid, so the employee left, started a new company, and went gangbusters, making the manager look like the stupid one. If a dell employee has an idea and they want the community to review it, I suppose why not? 11 Comments »

Ideastorm Mobile

IdeaStorm submitted by zmjjmz Jun 23

So you may be asking, am I insane?
Well, yes, I am, but that's besides the point.

I've noticed that due to the weight of the Ideastorm site, it's pretty much unusable on mobile devices such as an iPod Touch.
So a lighter, more accessible version of the Ideastorm site would be nice for us Blackberry/iPod Touch/iPhone/what have you users.

Also it'd provide an easier way to embed it into a site, not sure if you'd want that though. 1 Comment »

Bug? Or intended deception?

IdeaStorm submitted by badblood Jun 22

did anyone notice when you go to ideas coming soon link on the right all the ideas have the date 01/01/00? It's only when you open an idea individually that it's real posting date appears.

Is this an accident? Is it a bug? Is it meant to deceive us? 8 Comments »

Add a 'Studio Laptop Category', please (laptos only, even if Studio desktops arrive

IdeaStorm submitted by bretta Jun 26

Now that we have two Studio laptops out, please add a category to consolidate comments (if Sudio desktops come out, I'd suggest another category).

Also, a retry from Dec.
Graphics are critical in today's environment in many of most areas, but you have no 'Graphics' Category!?! This is needed.

Put more staff on the Ideastorm team!

IdeaStorm submitted by zmjjmz May 31

I seriously cannot believe that 3 people is a sufficient amount of admins to manage 450+ pages of ideas.
This is really evidenced by the fact that a _ton_ of ideas have gone ignored by the Ideastorm team, even when they were very popular. 10 Comments »

Can we come to an agreement to delete old ideas in negative points?

IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 Jun 28

I think that ideas with negative points that have been given ample time for voting should be looked at for deletion. (which is the idea) The question to you my fellow IdeaStorm users is what criteria should justify deletion? How long is ample time? How much in the negative should they be?

If you feel that no ideas should ever be deleted (unless they violate rules of course) go ahead and demote. I'm just trying to find a way to clean up the place a bit. 70 Comments »

Faceted Browsing model for IdeaStrom

IdeaStorm submitted by ramaseshanr Jun 13

Convert the IdeaStrom website to allow faceted browsing. It will make the navigational experience a lot smoother and it will democratize the insights on data posted here.
Example:
"Categories" contains several items.
It may be programmed to show the following:
all [9139]
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) [124]
Advertising and Marketing [456]
Broadband and Mobility [327]
Dell [1034]
Dell Community [2467]
Dell Web Site [138]
...
...

Status
UNDER REVIEW [12]
REVIEWED IN PROGRESS [34]
COMING SOON [12]
IMPLEMENTED [56]
PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED [120]
...

The number in the square bracket refers to the number of ideas.
This is a very simple example. To appreciate the power of faceted browsing, please look at some of the examples of the following sites:
http://simile.mit.edu/exhibit/
http://flamenco.berkeley.edu/demos.html

If faceted browsing were in place in ideastrom, it will allow the user to move through this large space in an efficient manner without getting lost. It promotes infinite browsing without ever getting lost in the piles of data. 1 Comment »
