Make MyAccount count!

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by future_maker 07/16/07

Last time I have used MyAccount on Dell.com I have failed to find what I was looking, but there was a pop-up popping each time I got back to a certain page (I don’t know what it was saying – I don’t read popups). And you did not even bother to ask me anything, like you do not care what I like dislike and I what I still want! What a waste of time! Have you guys ever been on Amazon.com?

Why don’t you make MyAccount useful for both of us? You could pull up my data and use a few questions to find out what I want from my systems and offer me solutions. As long as I am NOT FORCED to participate (as with that annoying popup) I can benefit from your and other users knowledge. Maybe I want to connect my computer to TV to record my shows or I want to make a small LAN gamming network. And since you know what I bought from Dell you can help me getting there. Heck, you can just show me reviews and comments written by other users that are trying to do the same without having to hire an expert. Not so long ago Dell claimed “we are a technology company”. Your website does not look that way. 1 Comment »

Dell remove all special holes and nooks and crannies made for holding Dell logo's and go with all stickers!

Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge 07/16/07

Dell remove all special holes and nooks and crannies made for holding Dell logo's and go with all stickers! This will streamline your production and manufacturing as you will no longer need special holes and gadgets to hold a Dell logo button. Going with stickers makes the computer sleaker and Greener as less resources are needed for a smooth notebook back plate or a desktop front face. This also gives you more surface area to plaster your favorite Dell stickers which you love! ;) (note the extra wink for the love of it, dell mods like winks and stuff like that don't they) 2 Comments »

Consider the PR implications of where your execs donate money.

Advertising and Marketing, Dell submitted by jmxz 07/16/07

Yes, I realize it's their own personal money - but the behavior of execs does reflect at least a little on the company itself. When you look at where your execs donate it sadly looks like a who's who of corruption in government.

The Main Idea is that Dell should be mindful of where their execs donate their money, and the PR consequences.

Followup Ideas are
...perhaps Dell should have guidelines regarding their employees' (including exec's) political donations.
...perhaps people who voted up this idea might want to reconsider.
...perhaps Dell should consider some damage-control PR saying that their execs don't reflect on Dell's corporate values
...or perhaps Dell should say that this is a valid business strategy, and that donations to corrupt politicians deliver more return on investment than honest ones.

Here's a list one of your execs political donations:
http://www.newsmeat.com/billionaire_political_donations/Michael_Dell.php
And here are details on some of the politicians to whom Dell Execs donated money:

  • Steve Chabot "Steve Chabot's place in the Orbit of Jack Abramoff continues to be exposed as another Chabot supporter - Neil Volz - pled guilty to corrupting congress. "
  • Kay Bailey Hutchison "Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison was reindicted today on a felony misconduct ..."
  • Richard Santorum: "Deepening Santorum Scandal" - and more, this is a guy who also claims WMDs were found in Iraq
  • Joe Barton "Representatives Tom DeLay (R- Texas), Billy Tauzin (R-La.) and Joe Barton (R- Texas) are implicated in a bribery scandal involving a corrupt Kansas electric utility, Westar Energy."
  • George Allen: Foley Sex Scandal Hits George Allen ... "scandal surrounding Mark Foley's sexually explicit emails to underage congressional pages touched George Allen today" ... and this "Over the past five years, Sen. George Allen (R-VA) has failed to tell Congress about stock options he got for his work as a director of a high-tech company...Congressional rules require senators to disclose to the Senate all deferred compensation, like stock options." ... and of course George Allen is famous for his Macaca embarrassments.
  • Heather Wilson, involved in both the US Attorney Scandal and theMark Foley scandal
  • Charles Taylor ... Taylor serves on the advisory board of National Wilderness Institute, an organization that claims to be the "voice of reason on the environment." NWI is dedicated to weakening the Endangered Species Act and other environmental protections. [2] ... a federal investigation was made into fraudulent loans made by the Blue Ridge Savings & Loan bank, which was founded and is chaired by Taylor. The probe produced guilty pleas by Taylor's former campaign manager ... In October 2006, the Wall Street Journal ran an report claiming that Taylor had earmarked millions of dollars in federal funds for a project that would create a highway in a rural area where he owned land."
  • Pete Sessions "Pete "the Streak" Sessions, TX-32, has been involved with accepting money from some tribes in apparent quid pro quo for opposing gambling in certain other states where there were other tribal casino interests. "
  • Michael Oxley: "The other lobbying scandal in Washington...So why isn't Michael Oxley, best known as the author of the hyper-regulatory Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which some studies claim has cost the American economy a trillion dollars, returning all the money he received at fundraisers of suspect legality?"
  • Dennis Hastert (a long long list of controverties)
  • and William Frist (a long long list of articles on his scandals)
  • and of course last and probably worst Tom Delay (though I don't know much about Texas politics; so this one at least have the excuse that it's local)Tom "Nailed" Delay

With a track record of supporting that many corrupt and scandal ridden politicians, I'd want to change my vote on the Mike Dell for President idea unless Dell (Mike) or Dell (the company) can give a decent explanation how those donations got picked.

Microsoft's reputation was affected very positively through Bill Gates's charitable donations - when he decided to become the biggest Robin Hood (steal from the rich and give to the poor) character in history. It's be sad if Dell's reputation is dragged down by its exec's donations. 2 Comments »

Other methods of Input please!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by timoshii 07/16/07

Ok VR was like the hype of the 80-90's well what happend? The mouse and keyboard have been around for what...since the first computer basically (excluding the ones that are really really old). I want something else for input like say VR gloves. This could be useful for many people especially ones that run proprietary software that demands precise movements such as photoshop, maya 3d, 3ds max, and gaming for that matter. I think Dell should come up with another option for input. Hey why not model it after the P5 VR glove? Its a start to see touch-screens but even those are limited. With full hand control like the P5 glove you may attract more gamers, digital artists, and most importantly me :). I know I'de buy one if Dell made one.

ps VR = virtual reality

VR gloves arent for 3D only the P5 glove can take FULL control of a mouse literally replacing the need for a mouse and keyboard with virtual keyboard software! 1 Comment »

Improve Latitude LCD displays

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by froejoe 07/17/07

We need a D830 with:

- LED backlit LCD
- 1440 x 900 resolution

The displays on the current D830s are really poor quality. Why do you assume a business notebook doesn't require a decent display?

A jump in resolution from 1280 x 800 to 1680 x 1050 on a 15.4" display is pretty drastic (not to mention going all the way 1920 x 1200). Where is the 1440 x 900 resolution?

Take a look at the 15.4" MacBook Pro (Santa Rosa edition). It's perfect in all respects, but particularly in the LCD display area.

Come on, Dell, you can do it. Comment »

Help me choose a machine

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by massyn 07/17/07

Instead of picking an Inspiron, Lattitude or Optiplex model, give us the ability to choose the amount of RAM, CPU, hard drive, etc, and then display a choice of target systems based on that criteria. Usually the same spec machine is cheaper on a different class of system. 3 Comments »

License this cool patent - seems much profit can be made here.

Linux submitted by jmxz 07/17/07

Wow this is an audacious

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070717-microsoft-patents-the-mother-of...

Microsoft patents the mother of all adware systems

The adware framework would leave almost no data untouched in its quest to sell you stuff. It would inspect "user document files, user e-mail files, user music files, downloaded podcasts, computer settings, computer status messages (e.g., a low memory status or low printer ink)," and more.

Seems some of your customers don't mind the spyware built into Vista (those who voted down the linked idea here) so they shouldn't mind the obvious consequences. For those users just take the next step and take advantage of the profit opportunity they're giving you.

[Why isn't there a Microsoft category to parallel the Linux one? I guess since the press describes Vista as The Best Think That Ever Happened To Linux I'll put it in the Linux category.]

Recreational Vehicle Wireless System

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility submitted by sonnys_toy 07/17/07

Looking to build or purchase a wireless external antenna system for a Travel trailer. Am planning to become a Full Time RVer and am building my desktop pc into the 5th wheel RV. Since in most campgrounds, LOS (line-of-sight) is mostly impossible, unless you have a powerfull wireless card and external antenna, your have to be near their system. Truckers have a system that ranges up to 8 mile range, but is only for a notebook. I do not have (or want) a notebook, cause it will not be able to operate my program for making signs...ie: vinyl lettering, or the printer/cutter program. Why have 2 separate computers in one RV? Looking for any and all help either from Dell or others looking for same system. 3 Comments »

Drives replaced with original OS image as a standard hard drive replacement

Operating Systems submitted by david_seachrist 07/17/07

Small business people do not have the time to reinstall the operating system with a tech after troubleshooting to replace the hard drive. MAJOR customer satisfaction would be gained if all drive replacements offered an OS image on the drive. Plug and boot instead of Plug, reinstall windows, reinstall drivers, reinstall windows updates..... 3 Comments »

Call your customer, if your enginner is unable to visit on the day agreed

Service and Support submitted by hoodamanny 07/18/07

I suggest you make it a policy, that should your company be unable to come to visit a client on an agreed date, that you CALL the customer to let them know that you are not coming. I have made two seperate appointments with your call centre only for you guys to be a NO show on the days and the only time, that I get a response from Dell, is after I call you guys... Comment »

Option to upgrade to 64-bit Vista.

Operating Systems submitted by impulse 07/18/07

All Dell computers have the option to upgrade to to 4GB of ram. However, the 32-bit versions of Vista only support up to 3GB of ram. An option to upgrade to a 64-bit version of vista should be available, as well as notification that 4GB requires the 64-bit OS. 4 Comments »

Make 64-bit Vista the default Vista; sell XP for people who want 32 bit.

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz 07/18/07

There's an idea that 4GB+ computers get 64-bit vista

It's hardly sane to offer all the versions of XP and Vista (32-bit Vista Basic; 32-bit Vista professional, 32-bit Vista business lite, 32-bit Vista business-more, 32-bit Vista Ultimate, 64-bit Vista Basic; 64-bit Vista professional, 64-bit Vista business lite, 64-bit Vista business-more, 64-bit Vista Ultimate, 32-bit XP lite; 32-bit XP professional, 64-bit XP lite; 64-bit XP professional, and then some).

It seems that with the resource needs of Vista, any Vista customer will be upgrading to over 4GB eventually; so does it make any sense to even offer the 32-bit Vista?

The main reason for 32-bit seems to be compatible with legacy stuff; which XP is better for anyway

This Idea is that it would simplify things if you offer
Vista - 64-bit only
Ubuntu - 64-bit only
XP - 32-bit only

pre-install VLC Media Player instead of Windows Media Player

Software submitted by siger 07/18/07

I suggest this beacuse:

- it reads all types of multimedia files
- it's free
-it's open source
- it doesn't need a lot of memory, and a lot of place on the hard disk
- it's easy to use
- it 's popular 16 Comments »

Dell - Let us know if IdeaStorm is still useful to you; or if you want it to just go away.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 07/06/07

When IdeaStorm launched; Dell sounded like it would be an important part of a new (or perhaps reborn pre-Rollins) strategy of listening to customers.

But since the initial excitement it seems IdeaStorm is getting less and less involvement from Dell employees. For example the very easiest and highest voted ideas (no-OS across your products has got to be one of the easiest ideas here; and if I recall it's in the top-10 most popular) never receive any comments from Dell.

Some speculation is that you may be getting pressure from some of your software vendors since many - if not most - of the Ideas here are critical of some of the pre-bundled software you include on your systems.

But even if those software vendors want IdeaStorm to go away, I would hope that Dell sticks with it --- we Dell customers trust and respect Dell far more than we respect those software vendors; and would very much like to see you stand up to them.

Ideas:

* Dell, please continue interacting with IdeaStorm. IdeaStorm was a good idea when you launced it, and IdeaStorm is still a good idea today.

* Dell, if some of your software partners may not like some of the IdeaStorm Ideas, don't let them pressure you into ignoring your customers. The reason such ideas (no trialware/adware ; linux linux linux ; noOS) are such popular is because as much as your customers like Dell, your customers are extremely frustrated with your software partners. Don't let them silence your customers. 5 Comments »

Dell's own Linux OS

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by rehtneug 07/06/07

Dell should develop it's own Linux based OS. Allow the open source community to provide drivers and any other software necessary. Partner with open source groups and provide resources to allow further development of necessary apps, such as OpenOffice. 10 Comments »

Add an SSD HD option to all notebooks configurations

Servers and Storage, Laptops submitted by solostian 07/06/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

As notebook mobility is becoming more and more important, battery autonomy and NOT available disk space is becoming a major decisive factor.

It would thus be very useful to be able to build a notebook without the standard power guzzling hard drive.

A Solid State Device HD would lower heat generation and lower power consumption.

Great idea! We are already offering SSDs on some of our products. http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/06/26/19139.aspx
