More Dell <-> Community Communication

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern 05/15/07

Certainly, Dell's move to start IdeaStorm was a good one, and I think it will improve the situation quite a bit.

What I'd like to see is more direct and spontaneous (but somewhat official) communication between Dell employees and the users of this site. dell_admin1 does communicate with us, but mainly about administrative issues.

You get our feedback. We want your feedback. Agree?

jmxz's part of the idea (his article was merged here):

IdeasStorm needs more participation from Dell Management and Employees

Dell has meetings with the management to discuss Ideas that are posted to the site. Why can’t some of those managers stop by and ask questions or maybe enlighten users when they suggest an idea that isn’t feasible. I’m not saying they need to spend the whole day doing this but maybe just pop in once in a while. I believe that such conversations lead to better ideas not only from us but from Dell employees as well. This kind of interaction would also make users know that they are being listened to. Further information in the comments of this Idea. 210 Comments »

Keep up with Santa Rosa & HP

Dell, Laptops submitted by greygabe 05/13/07

HP has come out with a 14", 15.4", and 17" personal Santa Rosa laptops.

Dell has yet to announce Santa Rosa personal laptops while HP has gone on a Santa Rosa Blitz. All of the Santa Rosa laptops so far come with only an integrated video card (Nvidias have already been announced) which out does all of the Dell non-integrated Inspiron video cards.

I really do want a Dell. The reputaition and my past experiences have left me addicted to the machines. But...
HPs have Dell beat in so many ways recently.
HPs are smaller/lighter, better battery life, cheaper with exactly the same hardware, better version of media direct, button placement makes much more sense, parts are avalible at local electronics stores, microphones on personal computers, accidental warrently is avalible in Florida, and perriphirals are better with HPs. The only thing I dislike about the new HPs are the mouse pad's material and feel. 48 Comments »

Dell Tablet PC

Laptops submitted by gautam 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.
Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.

Show projected weight on product configurator

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by finbib 05/15/07

Instead of putting disclaimers at the bottom showing how Dell arrived at the listed weight, how about projecting a weight for the system being configured at the time it is being configured.

Dell knows the base system weight, and the weights of batteries, hard drives, etc. They should be able to project the weight of any given laptop configuration. Comment »

15.4 size XPS system

XPS products, Laptops submitted by lilredfoxie 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I think theyre needs to be another 15.4" size XPS system, currently the XPS lineup has no middle ground, theres either the m1210 which is too small, or the m1710 which is too large ( I dont count the m2010, since its not really a laptop, its more of its own hybrid desktop/laptop comptuer thing) use the e1505 chassis, give it the cool XPS lights, and a D-dock connectior below
Check out the Idea in Action post for details about our new 15in system.

Better Looking Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by wh0rd 05/08/07

Internally Dell might have it all together, but externally the Dell Laptops need a makeover. Compared to Sony's Laptops and Mac Notebooks, Dell looks like old uncle Tom in gray and back. Although they are a nice color combination, it would be awesome to see them in a better, more sleeker design. This wouldn't be hard to do for a company like Dell. 1 Comment »

Thank You for making some of the Dell Inspiron Coupon Codes work on the E1505N

Dell, Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by jmxz 05/25/07

I just ordered a E1505N - and was pleased to see that at least some Coupon Codes that talk about Inspirons and say things like "Offer is only valid on e-value code:[...list...]" also work on the E1505N.

The Idea here is to keep having (at least some) coupon codes also work on the Ubuntu models.

I wasn't really expecting them to work; but when I saw it did I configured a rather higher-end version instead of the more minimal version I was expecting to buy if the coupons didn't work. I think this means both Dell and I am both happier with the purchase I ended up making.

Thank You - Looking forward to getting the E1505N. 8 Comments »

Make Carbon Fiber Based Laptops to Minimize weight and Maximize Strength

Laptops submitted by wonderworm 05/07/07

Sony's has a big winner with their Carbon Fiber based Vaio laptops. Carbon Fiber has become extremely cheap over the past several years so for little cost, Dell could reduce the weight of some of their laptop lines significantly while actually improving structural integrity.

Plus Carbon Fiber is just cool. 1 Comment »

I am not an idiot!

Service and Support submitted by zmaz 05/06/07

I'm not an idiot, so don't treat me like one! When I call the customer support hotline, I'm tired of being told to "click twice on the that looks like the world behind a brick wall" or something like that. Customer service reps should be able to recognize that if I'm asking, say, what port I need to open to do X or Y, or something of the like, I'm probably not a user who doesn't know how to turn the computer on. Instead, how about "You need to open port *number* UDP and port *number* TCP. Do you know how to do that?

Being told to first turn on my computer, then login is annoying, time-wasting, and is offensive to me, that I'm being treated like an idiot. 14 Comments »

Why is 4GB of RAM so damn expensive to have pre-installed??? I think I have the answer...

submitted by zeavott 05/29/07

By far, the Dell XPS line of computers are the best on the market. There is no system that even comes close.

I own the M1210, awesome computer. I got mine with 2GB of RAM.
This laptop comes with 2 DIMMs (slots) for RAM so if I ever want to upgrade, I need to throw out the 2 chips and replace them...

A few questions:

1) Why isn't 2GB on 1DIMM an option on the XPS laptops?
2) On the configurator

1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms) [Included in Price]
2GB Dual Shared Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms) [add $200 or $6/month1]
Dell Recommended for an enhanced Windows Vista experience
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz (2 Dimms) [add $1,500 or $45/month1]
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms) [add $1,700 or $51/month1]

WHY IS 4GB OVER $1000????

3) If you search ON DELL.COM! You will find a 2GB RAM module for the XPS M1210 priced out at $329.00 ---- Dell Part# A0821571
2 of these babies are $660 before tax!

4) It would be completely fair if Dell wanted to charge $800 or heck, even $1000 to have this pre-installed. Not everyone is tech savy... Why does Dell need to take such a HUGE profit margin here?

5) To be fair, for the 2GB upgrade it's only $200 where Dell is charging only $6 for that. I think that's totally fair and I think that it wouldn't even be so bad if we were charged a little extra for 4GB of RAM. But over $1,000 extra is a little insane!

Anyone agree with me here?

Dell Media PC

Dell submitted by dechah 05/25/07

I would like to see Dell offer a quiet feature packed media center PC using VIIV technology in an ultra compact form factor like the Mac mini. Preferably with 802.11n wireless capability and the ability to act as a Vista media extension device like an XBox 360. An ability to output 1080P via HDMI would also be a big plus. Comment »

Dell Should Make a XPS M1410

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by cyborganizer 03/05/07

Dell should make a 14.1" model of the XPS 1210. It should have a better graphics card (around the the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS range). The Glossy 1440x900 display and the camera that rotates 180 degrees are also important. 8 Comments »

Offer Beryl (or Compiz) preinstalled on Ubuntu computers

Linux, Software submitted by zhinker 05/16/07

The 3D eye-candy from those computers is something that's getting a lot of my non-linux friends wanting to try out Ubuntu. It makes a great selling point (look at how big a deal MS tried to make of it's simple little side view thing) and any new linux buyers expecting to already have that sort of thing working will be extremly dissapointed when the realize they still have some work to do. 5 Comments »

DVI on the XPS M1210

XPS products submitted by lwinston 05/29/07

The day you put a DVI port on the ultraportable XPS notebook is the day I buy another one (I already bought one for my wife) and a 27" monitor as well.
You could could lose the modem and offer it as an optional pc card for those who still need one. Comment »

Up to date video drivers: ATI requires Dell's permission...

Gaming, Monitors and Displays, Service and Support submitted by zorgkang 05/08/07

Dell doesn't bother "forwarding" to us video card driver updates released by ATI. There is an easy solution though and all that Dell has to do is say "ok" to ATI. Please read on.

When trying to update directly from ATI, I am told that I can't update my system and I should ask my laptop manufacturer. Frustrated with this, I search for another way to update my drivers and find much information on

http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/< found out that ATI is not to blame, but Dell is. ATI comments: "We are working diligently on attracting tier1 OEMs to participate in the mobile catalyst program. Once that happens, we will update the validation tool to allow the mobile catalyst drivers to install on those platforms."

So this thread is to strongly insist that Dell join the mobile catalyst program immediately! Please let Dell know we are not satisfied with the video card driver support they provide! 6 Comments »
