Rol out Eink screen capture

Laptops submitted by willems.stijn May 31

Would it not be nice if you wanted to read something you just pulled out an E-ink screen that is fitted in you laptop. This would make reading more relaxing and would create a new user interaction with the laptop. 6 Comments »

XPS 1530-Offer Blu Ray ROM!!-1720 Inspiron GETS IT!!??

XPS products submitted by contrast123 May 30

It boggles my mind. Why would the INSPIRON of all laptops, have the honor and priviledge of getting a rom blu ray player as an option, but the xps is only read and write blu ray?.

You would sell way more xps systems, if you simply offer the right options, and keep them consistent. Don't yank them, add them, take them off, add them again. Sheesh. 5 Comments »

Hot-swappable laptop batteries.

Laptop Power submitted by jmxz May 31

I'd like to be able to swap the battery on my laptop without having to turn it off or hibernate it. It seems you could do this by putting a large capacitor or tiny internal battery that could provide power for the 30 seconds or so it takes to switch to a spare battery. Another way you might be able to do this is instead of having one big battery in each laptop, have 2 small ones instead; and you could swap them one at a time.

If it was really easy to swap them I'd probably buy more spare batteries; so I could go most of the day without plugging in the laptop (and then I'd want an external charger so I could charge them all overnight). 25 Comments »

Put more staff on the Ideastorm team!

IdeaStorm submitted by zmjjmz May 31

I seriously cannot believe that 3 people is a sufficient amount of admins to manage 450+ pages of ideas.
This is really evidenced by the fact that a _ton_ of ideas have gone ignored by the Ideastorm team, even when they were very popular. 10 Comments »

Become a Linux leader, make Windows the option

Linux submitted by jonsmirl Jun 2

Install Ubuntu on every box Dell ships. Make Windows into the option.

This would require some real courage but long run it could increase revenue. Lowering the cost of computing always expands the size of the market.

As more people pick Linux only the budget used for Windows/Office would be freed. Some of that could come back as purchases of other Dell items. The cost differential is especially obvious on sub $300 systems. Who can afford to send Microsoft $150 in license fees on a $300 system?

Note , this is different than add Linux as an OS choice or make special Linux boxes. 25 Comments »

Some ideas for more friendly laptops

Laptops submitted by y_eilom Apr 21

As a Dell Latitude D620 user (very satisfy with) here are some more ideas for future laptops:

1. Dell's software Location Profiler please let the software to "learn" our habits automatically including external connections like additional screen in office etc.
2. To my point of view, most of laptops' users are quite a lot on the roads. It'll be nice you to add a vehicle charger to the new laptops.
3. I do like the ideas to add LEDs at the bottom of the screen with a user choice of turning on/off.
4. Keyboards, historically there are some unused keys at all keyboards, be the first to drop them & to give other keys for users' choice.
5. Wi-Fi catcher, give different colors to locked/unlocked connections or just show the unlocked. 6 Comments »

Offer No OS Option on all PCs for Home / Small Business Markets

Operating Systems submitted by gear Apr 22

Why not sell PCs with no OS installed and just include the drivers disk for popular OSes that are known to work on it like (XP, Linux, and Vista).

I already have licenses for XP and Linux and I can install my own here.

Having the drivers disk would mean I don't have to download them. 3 Comments »

All together now

New Product Ideas submitted by tonylinde Apr 22

I'd like to see a PC developed which consists of a desktop, laptop, PDA, MP3 player and other 'components', each of which can be removed from the main assembly or added back into it.

Each component has its own chip and memory so that it can act on its own but in the main assembly desktop all the components act in concert and can be used by the others. Plugging the laptop into the main assembly will add the laptop's LCD as a second screen, the drive will add to the desktop list of available drives and the cpu and ram can be used as a secondary processor by the main processor.

An alternative is that plugging the laptop into the desktop makes the whole unit available akin to a virtual machine with drag-and-drop working between the two.

Plugging a pda or mp3 player into either the laptop or the desktop also makes the ram and any inserted flash drives available to the larger processor but they can also act as 'virtual machines' as above with the laptop.

The key benefit to all this is that no-one need ever have to shift content from one device to another and, when stacked together, each unit performs its own job as before but can also do so in concert with all the others. 3 Comments »

Nothing beats a hardware wheel for volume control!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by wheelie Apr 22

A simple request – an old fashioned analogue wheel for volume control for every computer with speakers. Fiddling with software volume controls [beep beep beep beep…] is a miserable experience and even hardware button controls are limited – the increments are usually too big or small for a given audio file. Reinvent the wheel! 3 Comments »

Media Bays for expanability on all laptop lines

Laptop Power submitted by sykosoft Apr 22

Not so long ago, nearly all Dell laptops had media bays (nearly all of the inspiron, latitude, and precision models). Expandability is one of the reason I come back to Dell again and again. Instead of having to purchase a new laptop to add a blu-ray (or whatever comes next) drive, I simply purchase the media bay device. Similarly, no matter how good battery life becomes, a single battery will NEVER be able to last as long as 2 batteries. 2 will always be more than 1. (rumor has it the e-series won't have a media bay battery, this would be very unfortunate!) 5 Comments »

Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Price cut in Half, Dell needs to pass this on to customers

Sales Strategies submitted by hal2001 Apr 22

I think most of us who post here are smart shoppers and are going to be watching to see what Dell will do with this Intell price cut . Dell could play the Intell ball that's in there court now and bring back Dell sales and be a winner for the customer to. Let's see if price cuts start posting on their web site. Faster processors at lower cost equal better sales and happy customers. 4 Comments »

don't let the US lag behind

Linux, XPS products submitted by miguel.hernaiz Apr 11

It's funny to see how Dell -a US company- offers some of the latest components in their computers to customers in other countries, while US customers have to wait longer.

Example: the XPS M1330 with Ubuntu Linux can already be configured in Europe to sport an Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 processor (2.40GHz,800,3M)... which is still NOT an option for US customers. hard to understand. 11 Comments »

Higher Ranged Power Supplies For All Systems

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by bundy88 Apr 11

Lets face it todays computers require much more juice then they used to, which is why standard power supplies just aren't cutting it anymore. From running better graphics and faster memory to top notch motherboards they all require more power consumption in order to run smooth. This is why I feel the new standard of power supplies should be at least a 550 watt or higher in all systems depending on the consumers requirements. 9 Comments »

There's apparently a new "fastest chip on earth" - sell servers and workstations with them.

Dell, New Product Ideas submitted by jmxz Apr 10

This sounds interesting:
IBM chip is fastest on Earth

IBM Corp. began shipping high-end computers Tuesday built around the fastest chip on Earth, a microprocessor that can carry out up to 5 billion instructions per second, surpassing the speediest competing processors built by rivals like Intel or Sun Microsystems.

Selling servers and workstations with such chips might have a number of advantages:

  1. Microsoft can't accuse you of contributing to Windows piracy if you sell these with No OS

  2. It'd help you compete against HP (who gets special advantages with Itanium thanks to their initial work on the chip), Sun and Fujitsu (who each have their high-end sparc lines; and IBM (who of course uses this chip)
  3. It'd probably make for a more fun Intel negotiation.
  4. All the old Apple guys who were vehemently anti-Intel might switch to you
