Why are business computers so boring

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Vostro products submitted by badblood 07/11/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell's new line of Vostro computers are frankly boring. Why is it that business computers like office buildings are boring. If you are like me you spend a lot of time on a work computer mildly annoyed by it's minimalist nature.

Why don't all business computers come with integrated webcams. If anyone is going to use webcams en mass you'd think businesses would do it.

Work can be boring enough without being surrounded by boring furniture, boring work colors and boring computers.

Spice up the work place just a little and add some less boring features and designs to work computers.

The Dell Experience, Reloaded | on Linux & Windows

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 07/17/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Offer as an OPTION on all Dell PCs a well-chosen collection of add-on software, "Dell's best picks", including Dell visual themes and other software settings.

- Create a unique and distinguishable Dell look & feel (like Apple has done)

- Use advanced interface design with transparency, compositing, 3D effects, etc.

- Make it slick, polished, dead-easy to use and well integrated (e.g. make Vista look better than Microsoft has done)

- Make the Dell software pack look & feel similar on Linux, Windows XP and Vista

- Offer the Dell software pack on all new PCs, and for download for old Dell PCs and competitors' PCs

- Promote Dell software and services such as Online Backup & PC TuneUp

- Deliver updates for drivers and ALL other bundled software

- Include other rich online applications, with Firefox add-ons and themes

- Generate extra revenue with subscriptions, extended theme galleries, thematic tie-ins to movies, music, toys, and other consumer stuff (e.g. Spiderman™ theme by Dell™, etc.)

- Allow the user to easily revert to OS-default settings, and back again (with one click!)

- Allow the user to selectively choose to enable/disable each component (like Google Pack has done)

- Allow the user to select between profiles such as "Simple", "Family", "Power User", and "Custom"

- Set a high standard for any software to become part of the Dell software pack (e.g. components must be well-behaved and not popup-infested crapware)

- Make clear distinctions for each component whether it is open source, proprietary freeware, proprietary trialware, subscription-ware, etc.

- Make clear the impact on system resources for each component (e.g. startup items, estimated percentage of use of system resources such as memory, storage, CPU, network, etc.)

Add Windows Vista Premium option for Vostro Line

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Vostro products submitted by adir1 08/09/07

Buyers should be allowed to choose Windows Vista Home Premium on the Vostro line!

The Premium Edition, costing only $29 more (versus In-place upgrade option from Microsoft at $79) is vastly superior and Should be available even on Business line!

Below information comes directly from Microsoft web site, and lists additional features Premium provides versus Basic:

- Best Choice for Laptops (due to Mobility Center and Tablet support)
- Aero Desktop (Live Thumbnails and 3D Flip Choice) - Increase Productivity in addition to beauty
- Collaborate and Share Documents with Windows Meeting Space !!
- Scheduled Backups

I omitted all Entertainment pluses to emphasize that even Business specific additions alone Justify upgrade.

No business person would want to get stuck with inadequate 'Home Basic' edition, and often $199 upgrade to Ultimate or even $99 upgrade to Business edition is raising the computer cost by 20% and more, while still depriving business user of Entertainment on the Go (Yes, it's important ALSO!) 1 Comment »

Vostro Notebook needs a lcd mounted keyboard light

New Product Ideas, Vostro products submitted by ward733 07/30/07

One of the compitition has had this since p2 systems were introduced and still have it incorperated in there new systems. It is a Fn switchable white led monted on the lcd bezil that assists keyboard visibility in lower light situations . This light would also assist the web camera operation in lower light situations also..I'm sure it is patented for one but if you put two one on each side might allow for a new patent.. I've used this option and it really works well... 3 Comments »

SideShow (Front Display Panel on outer lid) & Fingerprint Reader should be offered as an option on Vostro notebooks

Vostro products submitted by cskwatra 07/30/07

Kindly offer SideShow technology (Front Display Panel on outer lid) [as on the Asus W5fe notebook], and Fingerprint Reader as an option on Vostro notebooks. It would benefit small businesses immensely.

See more about SideShow technology on: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/details/sides...< EXCERPT BEGINS **********

"Wouldn't it be great if you could read an e-mail message, confirm a meeting location, or check a flight reservation without turning on your computer? What if you could check the program guide in Windows Media Center by using a display that's built into your remote control? Windows SideShow puts this information literally at your fingertips on a wide variety of devices that can retrieve information from your mobile PC or desktop computer.

Windows SideShow is a new technology in Windows Vista that supports a secondary screen on your mobile PC. With this additional display you can view important information whether your laptop is on, off, or in sleep mode. Windows SideShow is available in Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, and Windows Vista Ultimate.

Windows SideShow uses gadgets, convenient mini programs, to extend information from your computer to other devices. Gadgets can run on a Windows SideShow–compatible device and update that device with information from your computer. Using a gadget, you can view information from your computer regardless of whether your mobile PC is on, off, or in the sleep power state—which can save you both time and battery life."

Fix CPU Whine On Intel Systems

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by codemonkeyx 08/08/07

This issue has been ignored by Dell, and other manufactures for far too long. I was hoping the issue had been addressed with the new M1330 laptop I just bought, but it has not.

When the CPU enters low power mode it makes a whining sound all the time. It's quite bad, and has been reported all over the web by thousands of users.

Dell needs to sit down with Intel, and figure out what is going on and stop ignoring the problem. 80 Comments »
