Currently if I post an idea and it gets merged, I usually have no idea what idea it got merged into. What if someone follows a link to an idea of mine, only to see "Article not found" because it was merged? People should be able to know whether the idea was just deleted or merged instead, and if so into what idea. Also I might want to check if my idea was really a duplicate of the idea into which it got merged, or if not, which might mean that I might repost it.
At the very least revise the "Article not found" for such ideas to "Article was a duplicate of (such and such idea; do not forget to provide the link) and thus was merged into it."

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?
"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.
I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.
Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Dell: We are not all BLIND! On your 17" NOTEBOOK dislays, you offer a 1920x1200 screen resolution (on that page "WUXGA" means "1920x1200"). Yet on your 17" DESKTOP displays, you offer only a 1440x900 screen resolution.
If you can offer 1920x1200 on a 17" notebook display, then you can definitely do the same for 17" desktop displays. Please offer 1920x1200 on your 17" desktop displays, just like on the 17" notebook displays!
And obviously, of course offer 1920x1200 on all 17"+ screens (by 17"+ I mean 17" or greater, so this includes the 17" screens, as well as the screens that measure greater than that), as Dell currently offers 1920x1200 only on 24"+ screens (by 24"+ I mean 24" or greater, so this includes 24" screens, as they have the 1920x1200 screen resolution).

SCREEN RESOLUTIONS for XPS Laptop Line
Why on God's green earth would Dell throw in such a cheapy LCD screen into the XPS 1530 ? I've been waiting for this laptop religously since it was 'announced', in the hope of a 1680x1050 screen, or at LEAST 1440x900. What is this, Dell ? Are you trying to scare away your customers with blocky icons and low resolutions ?
Ok, on a less rampaging note ..
Is there any possibility this might change in the future ? Would i be foolish to order immediately, only to see a couple of LCD options pop up over the next few days ?
We now offer 1440 x 900 and 1680 x 1050 panels as an option. Take a look at the Direct2Dell blog post on the idea.

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.
In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."
When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.
How did we ever get glossy screens?
Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare."

A month ago I passed over the Dell Insperion 17" laptop for an equivalent HP laptop for one reason only. The HP had gigabit ethernet and the Insperion did not. You need to add wired gigabit as the default on all your PCs and laptops, or at least make it an option.

There are several tools under Linux which list the detected hardware of a system and display it in a well defined format.. (available under Ubuntu)
eg. lshw, lspci, lsusb
There are also other methods used to obtain more information about a system, which kernel developers usually ask for when debugging hardware problem..
dmesg, cat /proc/cpuinfo
This information is incredibly useful when looking to see what hardware is supported by Linux, and when deciding what hardware to buy, in particular laptops. It would be very helpful if these details were available on DELL products. (Step 1. Boot the most recent Ubuntu CD. Step 2. Run these command and save the details. Step 3. Publish on the DELL Website.)

Put some attitude into the Latitude

Dell needs a new Latitude model for people who need a stylish notebook for work but want it to be capable of play activities also. It should have a LED back lit 13.3 inch high resolution/contrast ratio trans reflective screen that swivels like a tablet but without the touch screen (touchscreen could be an upgrade). The option of a non-glossy screen would be available.
Media buttons on the monitor would be helpful for times when the screen is turned around and wouldn't be accidentally pushed when resting the notebook on your lap. A good example would be when you're on a plane watching a movie, the notebook would fit better in this configuration allowing you to see the screen easier.
Dell should use a design like in this leaked photo of an upcoming ultraportable.
It needs to have options like Dual core processor (Quad core when available for mobile), DVD burner, fingerprint reader, SSD, 5-1 card reader(with a cover so the card doesn't fall out), HDMI, Dolby Certified sound as well as a video card that is DX10 with at least 256mb of RAM(perhaps use cards from the Precision line for things like video editing) . It needs to be dual hard drive capable, 2 headphone jacks, built in microphone and the option of a built in camera 2MP or better. A WiFi hot spot finder would be helpful. Don't forget the docking port and gigabit Ethernet. Please, Please, Please do not skimp on bandwidth, only the newest technology please.
A LED light that can illuminate the keyboard in dark rooms and media connect must be standard. I would actually recommend using a black light over the keyboard as the white letters would pop without using a very bright light.
Vista Sideshow could be an option as well. At least a small monochrome screen with basic information so you don't have to power up the system.
I think there would be a large market for this type of system.
The advertising would be a great boost to Dell's image. Showing how your "new L-attitude" has changed your life. I've always looked at the Apple VS PC ads and wondered why can't I have both. I think Dell can supply the notebook that finally brings work and play together in a stylish but professional looking package.

HP has had it on their notebooks for 1 year now. Come on Dell! What's it going to take to put in an HDMI port? Most of the new LCD TV's today input HDMI.
And I'm surprised that the new XPS 1730 has no HDMI port. DVI is so yesterday and is not forward thinking at all.
Your next generation Montevina based models MUST have HDMI.
And yes, this is a dupe. A dupe of my own post even. But I want to buy a Dell. But without HDMI, it makes it difficult.

An Ubuntu notebook with higher specs would be nice. At a minimum, I'd want a decent monitor option (1920x1200 resolution), a decent NVIDIA video card option, and gigabit ethernet. I'd also prefer an AMD processor, and a price point about $50 less than an equivalent Windows system.

Currently, the Inspiron 1505N can be customized to be rather high-end, but it lacks one crucial component: A really high-end graphics card.
This is a request to provide a Linux laptop that can be fitted with a huge hard disk, lots of RAM and a high-end Nvidia graphics card, preferably in a 15" design with lots of USB ports.
