Upgradable graphics in the m1530!!! (no more soldered cards)

Gaming, XPS products submitted by theideasman Mar 4

Im sick of my laptop graphics getting old and then finding that i need to buy an all new system. Cant the xps come with modular cards (mxm) that can be upgraded direct from dell if the consumer requests a graphics upgrade. Of course there will be a cost involved but surely it will be better than having to buy an entire new system! 3 Comments »

Jump on New Hardware Before Competitors

Dell, Gaming, XPS products submitted by shiloh.meyers 02/17/07

Dell would benefit tremendously in their XPS line if they were to release new hardware as soon as developers released it. Take for example the Santa Rosa Intel laptop chipset. I believe that at least in Dell's XPS line, they should put it into their computers ASAP. I Dell will wait sometimes to see how hardware will fare in the general computing market, but with the XPS line, which is supposed to cater to gamers and more experienced computer users, I don't believe it benefits Dell to wait on the release of the hardware while their competitors grab all those gamers who were waiting specifically for that hardware and release it first. We, as gamers, already know what's coming out, and we'll want it as soon as it can be obtained. I think if Dell were to release it that early, gamers and more knowledgable computer users would make it worth the effort. Comment »

TrueLife LCD Display Screens Should Have An Optional Anti-Glare Coating (like camera lenses & eye-glasses)!

Gaming, Monitors and Displays submitted by hjwasson 05/09/07

There are many posts regarding the fact that TrueLife displays are far too reflective for brightly backlit conditions. User responses to the complaints suggest getting a business class display with anti-glare filter - but these displays have not kept pace, are too dim, have poor pixel response rates and often have poor color rendition.

My suggestion is a compromise: Have the option to have TrueLife displays with an Anti-Reflective coating applied - just like those found on photographic optics or eye glasses! Such coatings are not as effective as traditional anti-glare matte screens, but significantly reduce reflections without greatly impacting light transmission (which is why they are used in photographic optics - they actually enhance contrast and reduce unwanted light scatter). They would moderately eliminate most reflections, while still allowing TrueLife displays to be bright and punchy.

http://www.firstvisionmedia.com/uww/2005_ar/enhance_properties.html
http://www.firstvisionmedia.com/uww/2004_ar/ar_product_showcase.html
I'm sure that Seiko, Hoya, Essilor, iCoat and others would vie for the chance to open up a new market for their coatings, and thus bring more profits to them (and lower costs to us). Some IdeaStorm members might be concerned about scratching the coating - but consider:

1. LCD panels are already prone to scratching, and care must be taken in their cleaning.
2. Modern Anti-Reflective (AR) coatings, with their multiple layers, are far more resistant to scratching than they used to be.
3. AR coatings tend to repel dust, so the need for cleaning would be less frequent.
4. With the use of a microfiber cloth (and mild liquid cleaning formulations when needed), the AR coating and display will remain pristine for many years of service.

If you would like to see modern Anti-Reflective coatings applied to TrueLife displays (as an optional upgrade) please promote this post.

XPS 1530 Lap Top - FIX the SLOT LOADING NOISE!!! AND increase ETHERNET SPEED

XPS products submitted by contrast123 May 30

Yes, ahem, please fix slot loading noise, on XPS 1530, I don't know if all xps models have this, but it would be nice to smoothly eject a DVD or cdr without having a stuttering noise emanate from the machine, EVERYTIME you eject something form the slot loader.

Ethernet, I still cannot believe no GIGABIT ethernet is available for the HIGH end laptop, XPS is suppose to be. If it were a TRUE multimedia home laptop, then you would have it networked with other home machines, meaning, you would LIKE to transfer files, via lan router to other computers.

I use the 1530 as a replacement, and having to tap your fingers while files transfer, is sad.

ALmost depressing considering that your new vostro line, is offering the gigabit ethernet. 2 Comments »

Stop using porprietary parts!

Service and Support submitted by joes15 May 28

I have been told that I can only upgrade my Dimension E521 with parts from Dell because other parts won't work. In other words Dell uses proprietary parts. This really dissapoints me. I bought my PC with the thought that I would be able to upgrade later. I think that if Dell would use standard parts it could 1. porbably save a lot of money when it comes to manufacturing, and 2. it could increase sales because people want very upgradeable PC's. I know I do. 4 Comments »

Give a choice of either Ati or Nvidia gpu's

Gaming, Desktops and Laptops submitted by theideasman Mar 23

Everyone is a fanboy to one particular brand and prefers their products, so why do some desktops and a lot of laptops only have one option. There should be at least one Ati card and one Nvidia card available for each machine so people dont have to go for the brand they dont want. Its only fair... 6 Comments »

Dell Coupons in India

Advertising and Marketing submitted by yudhajeet Jun 27

Unlike Dell US/Canada, there is supposedly no coupon applicability on the dell India website.
Please provide coupons for purchases in India. Otherwise remove the field for coupon entry on the order confirmation screen as its totally irrelevant!!!!
There's a huge price gap between dell products in India and US/Canada. Please look into the same. Comment »

9600GT 512MB Gddr3 for xps 1530!!!

XPS products submitted by idangold Jun 4

9600M GT/9650M GS are officially out on the market since Yesterday June 3, 2008!
Dell, I assure you, your future customers don't want to wait months before its out on a Dell xps 1530,Frankly speaking, I dont even want to wait one week... (oh and for the xps 1330 fans you guys should also get the 9300/9500 real soon as well :))
Its great for performance but more important is the battery power you save - Think about how this is combined with the LED and the new Penyran processors and a 9 cell on an xps!!!! 10 Comments »

Off switch for touchpad on notebooks

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by jscottd 02/23/07

All of my users would love the ability to turn off the touch pad. A simple recessed button near the touch pad or even along the side of the machine. How about by the power switch? I know other manufacturers already have this. Let's get up to speed. 8 Comments »

Delivery Time - Please Reduce.

Service and Support submitted by pablohs Jun 13

I love the fact that with Dell I can customize my pc or laptop and get exactly what I want. When I do customize and pick what I want, I have no problem to wait for my unit. However, today as an experiment I pick a laptop and DID NOT CUSTOMIZE anything and just click on BUY NOW. The estimated shipping time was July 18 2008 – I think this is crazy – if I am buying a unit that you are showing in the website as your standard, I should be able to get it next week not in 5 weeks. Also consider the fact that I am paying you TODAY and you are not delivering the product for another 5 weeks. That is a loan to DELL with no interest, and DELL is not giving me a discount for waiting either. Any comments? 10 Comments »

XPS notebook feature refresh

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by atxguy512 Jun 22

With the pending release of the "Studio" Line of Inspiron notebooks, it appears that Dell is looking to take back the notebook market. There are new design features that put the "Studio" notebooks on par with Macbook Pros... slimmer/update design, slot loading DVD +/- RW and/or Blu-ray drive, BACK LIT keyboard, eSATA drives and a host of color options.

For info on "Studio" Dell see: http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/15/even-more-on-dells-studio-1536-1536-and-th...

I'm an XPS fan, so please consider bringing the same options to the m1330, m1530... especially the BACK LIT keyboard. This is the one feature I love about Mac(s). Also, consider uping the video options on the m1530 to offer a 512MB option from nVidia. 3 Comments »

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet

XPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude. 28 Comments »

Lower Prices of Batteries, especially Replacements

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by gear Apr 18

I realize there is a temporary battery shortage that is driving up prices and also the high cost associated with getting bad batteries that have to be recalled.

However, I know that there are many Li-Ion battery suppliers in China that are currently not qualified as Dell Suppliers and will need a certain amount of work to come up to your quality specs.

Why not begin a program to upgrade their capabilities leading to a more diversified source of batteries, and hopefully, lower prices?

In the mean time, I understand that there are shortages, but it is unconsciousable to raise your prices for replacement batteries to $300 for a 9 cell battery.

That is the level of robbery associated with Sony.

If there is a shortage, hold prices stable but impose rationing instead. 3 Comments »
