Linux Printing Solutions
Linux, Printers and Ink, Service and Support submitted by jfelisky

I have a Dell 3100cn laser printer, which was a nice purchase until I dropped Windows XP and moved to OpenSuSE on my home computer.
I've tried a lot of different message boards looking for a way to keep that printer, but I'm so frustrated with Dell's lack of Linux support that I have to consider HP, since the LaserJet family is more broadly supported.

Computers are Automobiles
Dell submitted by khalid

To a consumer a computer is just like an automobile in following ways:
1. Its like the same excitement to buy a new flashy new computer or a new shiny car. 2. It will change the life at almost on equal level, will add the power to be anywhere anytime when consumer want. 3. Consumer did not buy the car or computer to change/switch every month. They except their car/computer to work for a good life time. 4. A broken car and a broken computer can upset consumer at almost same level. Its due to their dependency on their car/computer. 5. Sharing a car and a computer with family members are in many ways exactly the same. Head of family expects others to protect and use the car/computer carefully. 6. There is a continuous maintenance required for car/computer and its peripherals. Best car/computer doesn’t drive as much as loyalty as best service does.
I have run my own business related with computer retail and then provided support, and was active in market association. I understand how computers are important to people’s life and how they want maintenance support. To my surprise, I don’t see the level of support Computer manufacturers are providing here in North America.
I think, taking automobile industry module will really boost a computer company to boost its support and enhance customer experience and drive their loyalty. There should be Service /Display centers all around major cities. There should be a network of authorized service technicians all around the country. People should have the option to Call/take their system to a service center/request a technician.
If I make it short, we must:
1. Be more close to consumer. We must have a presence in their neighborhood. 2. Offer consumer different level of service for them to choose from.
It’s a good news that Dell has decided to go retail, its wonderful. But I still believe that direct model is great, we just need to extend it to get a place in every neighborhood.
Thank you
Khalid

React OS, the only free windows.
Operating Systems submitted by eligzero
05/28/07
How would you like to cut the cost of your operating system by 100%? Every time a dell computer is built, or any other computer for that matter, which requires a windows compatible operating system, a license must be purchased from Microsoft. There is no true free alternative, as Microsoft Windows is currently the defacto computer operating system. Meaning, every time someone wants a computer that is compatible with most programs out there, they must pay Microsoft. Except ofcourse, if ReactOS matures.
ReactOS is the first windows compatible operating system ever developed. Having the potential to perminently turn out operating systems both free and open source, it is the most important online project of our time. With time, and help, ReactOS can bring to a halt the need of any individual or company to ever pay for an operating system ever again.
How much does Dell pay for Window's licenses? Hundreads? Thousands? Billions? How much does HP pay? How much does Intel pay? How much does America pay each YEAR to Microsoft for the basic ability to run programs which aren't even created by Microsoft?
If you think this number isn't in the billions, you haven't seen Microsoft's profits. Imagine if all of us, if America, if the world could stop paying Microsoft for the privilege to use computers. How much time, money, and energy would we save as a world? How could those billions be better put to use if we didnt have to pay Microsoft?
ReactOS is the only project of it's kind in the world. The only project which has the ability to save billions of people billions of dollars each year, and improve our global society. By providing a free, compatible alternative to Microsoft's propriatary operating system, not only are we saving ourselves money, but we also enhance the future for our children. By creating an open source free compatible alternative, you enhance market conditions by increasing competition, while enhancing learning through the availability of source code.
Further, our children will benefit by the ability of software engineers to study, learn from, and advance the currently stalled science of operating system development. And by doing so, they will not only improve the quality of future operating systems, but will also lower the cost of their use to corperations.
If there is one project that you decide to support in the next fifty years, make it ReactOS. Stockholders, businesses, programmers, neighbors, and even your children will benefit from the reduced costs and increased competition provided by this totally unique project.

ZERO Noise Water Cooling Laptops
Environment, New Product Ideas submitted by ruvenss

Make a cooling system with less decibels than any other Laptop on the market. Use cooling materials, as an option, so customers can choose to pay more for a non noisy laptop.
A cooling system for every part of the laptop, even sharing the weight of the components on the screen side,. imagine a flat battery on the whole LCD screen back, now with that free space on the chassis you can split the harware components so they can breath better, also include a flat gel cooling system, to improve performance, battery life, and reduce the noise as much as possible.

Dell XPS M2010: airport carry-on - handle makes it too deep?
XPS products submitted by pem
05/28/07
All carry-on items must meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, fit easily in a SizeWise® unit (approximately 22" x 14" x 9") (delta.com)
Width: 18.85", Height: 2.90", Depth: 15.90", Weight (lbs): 18.305 (dell.com)
This means that according to these specs, the XPS M2010 is barely too deep to carry-on to an airplane - 14 vs. 15.90. I wonder if the handle is the extra 1.9 inches, and what if the handle could be folded or unscrewed somehow - would that meet the requirements (just in case they give me trouble)?
It's hard to tell if I'd get any trouble about the sure-sized laptop or not trying to take it as a carry-on... But if my primary purpose in spending $4000 - $6000+ is to travel with it, then that is a pretty big risk!
Often when I travel light, I don't want to check bags unless I have to... And checking such an expensive computer doesn't sound safe either!

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell
Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra
02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college. Gopal

New TV commercials!
Dell Community submitted by stella1609
05/29/07 **IMPLEMENTED**
Let's see some new commercials! The recent HP ad campaign is incredibly appealing, incorporating famous people/characters and emphasis on the personalization part of the personal computer. All Dell is offering is the same old assembly line commercial with a little blip about a sale at the end. Surely you can do better than that. Check out our latest commercials here.

How about selling Dells on Craigs list? or eBay? This would be perceived as a more mainstream move for Dell and still in line with online model.

Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops
Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol
05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops.

Check out the Idea in Action update.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$Price Configurator!$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Dell Web Site submitted by sethdixie

On the Dell Website it should have a price configurator to find the CHEAPEST price for you after you make your confiuration. It could search the featured sale items, etc. Once I was configuring a laptop and I talked to chat and they found it about $70.00 cheaper- who wouldn't take that! I am certain that I looked at all the sale items!
