Goodbye Dell, you'll be missed...

Desktops and Laptops submitted by okroger104 Jul 14

Recently bought an HP HDX 9000 and a Pavillion TX2500 tablet.

Why?

Styling, function, and price was just right.

What did I have to compare the HP's to before buying?

Nothing.

And that sums up the usefulness of this website. I can see why HP rocketed to #1 past Dell in such a short time.

As a long time customer of Dell and one who still uses their products that I purchased a while ago, it's somewhat sad to see Dell no longer on the cutting edge.

These HP machines are well designed with excellent build quality. Their customer service so far has been above and beyond. (Sure, maybe I'm just lucky.)

So have fun folks. Fight the good fight. Hopefully in the future I can return to being a Dell customer.

And so you may ask, what is the idea in this post? if it's not self-evident, then you need to get out more and see the rest of the computing world. 24 Comments »

Don't offer Creative XiFi soundcards.

Desktops submitted by bbr Jul 14

Creative's XiFi soundcards do NOT support EAX under Windows Vista.

Either offer XP-64 bit alternatives, or different sound cards.
Creative is not a good solution.

Asus Xonar would be a good alternative : http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=25&l2=150&l3=0&l4=0&model=1989&modelmenu=1
But it's price tag is a bit higher too. Comment »

Develop science / sci-fi concept for laptops.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by tovare Jul 1

I was inspired by a post about rulers for monitors.

http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10089844/Ruler_for_the_monitor

Here's the idea:

Make a new laptop concept in the direction of Casio G-Shock, Swiss army knifte, Leatherman Tools, Fluke etc. A computer is the finest scientific tool you can purchase, you could make a concept which recognizes this and add additional instrumentation.

* Light sensor (Could be helpfull for choosing cameralens etc and to answer if the office enviroment needs more light etc.).

* A GPS reciever.

* Picking up other signals than bluetooth and Wifi (Such as FM, AM, HAM, Alien communication etc.)

* A tilt sensor which can be used as a level.

* Temperature.

* Alttitude sensor

* Barometer

* Thermometer

* Humidity sensor (also to protect computer).

* Laser measuring device.

* Electrical meassurements (Like a fluke multimeter).

* Geiger counter.

... and much much more.

The end-user-experience should be like in a science fiction movie where the hero can figure out anything from the computer. Think: What would Dr. Rodney McKay in Stargate Atlantis like? :-)

This product would be for the love of technology, engineering and a bright future.

A good product has a good story: You should have science fiction authors develop the concept with you! Bring science teachers in on the development as well !

Thanks for reading and vote this up for some more attention :) 19 Comments »

Dell.com consumer-oriented Linux page

Dell, Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by rafaelrojasc Jul 1

I know Dell already has a Linux-oriented Web page at www.dell.com/linux but it's too BUSINESS-oriented. Dell should make a small Web page explaining to regular consumers the benefit of using Linux and their Ubuntu offering (no virus, no spyware, rock stable, choice, free as in freedom), and then direct the user to Dell's Ubuntu computers, instead of the "cautionary tale" you get when you click on the "Dell ubuntu" link which says something like "Ubuntu's not for everyone. If you want Windows, come back.".

This proposed Web page can also say something like that, but it can also feature all the positives of using Linux. I mean, Apple tells you all about Macs telling you how nice they look and are, how stable it is and they don't really care if most Users go for Windows. It's all about saying "here's a choice. You can try it". 2 Comments »

Dell Mobile PC Center

Education, New Product Ideas submitted by bhenders126 Jun 30

When I was a kid I remember one of my favorite days always being the day that the Bookmobile would come to my school.
We didn't have a very good library so it was great to have a regular dependable method to get books that I could read.
In the same spirit of the Bookmobile I think Dell should make mobile PC centers to take to schools and commuities that may not have regular access to computers.
As I envision them, a Mobile PC Center would be something along the lines of the set-up's I've seen set up at electronic conventions for demos of gaming systems like the PS3 and XBOX or perhaps more of a big self contained climate controlled RV vehicle type of set up like the ones I've seen used for medical screenings.
While helping to get kids more familiar with the use of computers, the mobile PC Center's could also be used to offer quick demo's on current and future Dell products and could also maybe even offer classes that would conclude with coupons or discounts for future purchases with Dell.
The mobile PC Center could even be used to go to Senior Citizen's centers or Assisted living communities to help them learn how to better use the computer as well as to inform them of the latest products and services offered by Dell. 1 Comment »

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

XPS 1530 OFFER 64 or 32 bit OS system, AND OFFER 64 BIT DRIVERS FOR ALL LAPTOPS and other PC's DEll sells... like other lower end laptop OEM vendors do...

Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by contrast123 May 31

other vendors, I looked at, while shopping for a laptop, beatifully offered the OS system, in EITHER 64 bit or 32 bit. The world will eventually go towards 64 bit. Gateway is offering their FX gaming desktop with a 64 bit OS pre-installed.

Toshiba, also is selling a VERY impressive laptop at bestbuy with 450 gigs of hardrive, PLUS the 64 bit os system, which makes full use of the 4 gigs.

DONT LOCK THE CUSTOMER INTO 32 bit, thats horrid. Why would DELL DO THAT?. Your such a huge company, it boggles the mind, as to why, if you want to stay competitive, you would only offer a 32 bit OS system?. Revamp your deal with Microsoft, and tell them that if the customer wants to upgrade, that for being a dell customer, a dell customer can get the 64 bit OS without having to BUY it.

AND why would you offer 64 bit drivers ONLY for the XPS 1330. BUT
NOT HAVE THEM AVAILABLE FOR THE XPS 1530?????. It's ludicrous. So now the customer has to rag tag, and get the 64 bit xps1330 drivers, for the xps 1530, and end up sacrificing some hardware functionality, simply because DELL forgets one of the most CRUCIAL aspects of their machines....the OS ?....c'mon dell...whats up that, seriously..i mean, seriously, whats up with that.

EVERY SINGLE LAPTOP you offer, should have available, for it, on your website for download, 64bit drivers and 32 bit drivers.

64 bit drivers are the future, need I tell this to a tech company like dell?....yup. From a humble customer that likes your products, owns TWO XPS laptops, usses an xps 1330 for presentations, powerpoint presentations that I do, and I really love my computer, but would like
to love a bit more. Just a little more. I love the design quality, build wise, is second to none. If you fix these other little details, you will rule, your competitors will have a VERY hard time matching you in the laptop vending industry.

Please consider my ideas. I own two xps's a 1530 and a 1330.

Again thanks, for offering this forum to place our ideas. I have seen some ideas implemented, and would really enjoy seeing some of mine(others have the exact same idea as myself) being implemented.

I know I cant be the only thinking this way. I know I'm not. I highly doubt Dell also thinks I am alone with these thoughts. 4 Comments »

Evaluate using Apple's internally at Dell.

Simplify IT submitted by jmxz Apr 18

And before voting this down, read about IBM's fascinating pilot program for using Macs internally and the advantages they're finding.

IBM’s Research Information Services launched an internal pilot program designed to study the possibility of moving significant numbers of employees to the Mac platform. The study has already found an enthusiastic response from participants and is helping to drive Mac support for IBM’s business applications. ... IBM is actively working to move away from its dependence upon Microsoft Windows and toward a heterogeneous cross-platform future.

The pilot program document outlined a series of reasons for evaluating MacBook Pro laptops as a replacement for the Windows-based ThinkPads currently in use inside the company:

# Alternative to Microsoft Windows
# Less prone to security issues
# Widely used in the academic world with which Research has close ties
# Many new hires are more comfortable with the Mac and lately asking for it
# Growing Mac community in Research and within IBM that finds the development environment on Mac more convenient
# Growing acceptance of the Mac as a consumer and business oriented client platform

The first phase of the pilot program ran from October 2007 through January 2008.
...
Of the 22 of 24 who responded, 18 said that the Mac offered a “better or best experience” compared to their existing computer, one rated it “equal or good,” and three said the Mac offered a “worse experience.”

Surely you at Dell want to give your employees a "better or best experience".

And if you can learn something from it, and bring some of those "better or best experiences" to Dell computers too - it would be good for your customers as well. 10 Comments »

More feedback from Dell on popular ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by pjeff Feb 15

I would like to see more (official) feedback from Dell on popular ideas eg. +1000 ideas.
For example, many people have been requesting an LED backlit screen for the XPS M1530. Look on any forum where this model is being discussed and you will see people saying that they are holding off on purchasing until it becomes available (I'm one of them!) so it would be helpful to know what is happening.

Another example would be illuminated keyboards. Saying it is "partially implemented" doesn't really tell us anything. We know you have done that! If a popular idea is not practical or its implementation is problematic for whatever reason, communicate back so discussion can take place. This is how brainstorming works!

I also wonder how many good ideas are overlooked because Dell believe the cost would be too great for the product in question. Be upfront about your concerns regarding costs. For example, you may find that Inspiron/Vostro customers would not be prepared to pay extra for a premium screen and illuminated keyboard but XPS customers are. Post polls so that members can vote on these issues and provide you with accurate data. We are here to help so use us. 7 Comments »

Dell Latitude XT with Webcam!!!

Latitude products submitted by xhen Feb 1

What happen with the webcam on the XT? nowadays we are involved in more IT situations and we need more communications..why not a webcam on the Latitude XT?.
It´s a really good product that include WIFI, WLAN (3G, UMTS) ....and the webcam???

Try to upgrade the tablet PC with a webcam for the next manufactures , I suppose this won´t be so expensive for dell (like any other competitors do) and it will be very useful for users. Comment »

Improve the Idea Process on IdeaStorm

Dell, IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 Jan 31

The current way this site works lacks proper feedback and process to show the customer that their ideas are important to Dell. The process also does not allow the ideas to gain proper exposure from visitors that is needed to propel the ideas to the popular ideas front page. Here are some suggestions for improvement.

1. All ideas should be read by a Dell representative and tagged as acknowledged within 3 days of being posted. I know this will be difficult on old ideas but if you go through and read them you will spot lots of duplicates to merge in the process.

2. Every time Dell has a meeting to discuss the top ideas they should change the tag to appropriately identify Dell's reaction to the idea. Currently there are several ideas on the front page without a status tag that should have been discussed by Dell already.

3. When users visit the site they should be taken to the recent ideas page to give those ideas more visability. I'm sure that Dell's own research shows that most users only visit the first page or two of the popular ideas tab which is unfair to all the other ideas submitted.

4. Don't just delete ideas and send off an email to the poster, allow them to defend themselves first. While it only takes a minute to read an idea, some users have spent a lot of time creating it. Dell should ask for clarification or post a comment on why they feels it should be deleted and the poster should be given 3 days to respond (unless there is a TOU violation involved).

5. Have an open mind and quit being a bunch of bean counters. We have read responses from Dell worried about profitability of ideas. While profit is the primary goal of the company, sometimes you have to take a chance. A truely innovative idea may not earn direct profits but may garner significant press and show Dell as the leader is should be rather than just another follower.

Feel free to post any other ways you feel the process can be improved inside the comments of this idea. 38 Comments »

Program to automatically install drivers

Service and Support submitted by mo Jan 30

I think Dell should make a program for reinstalling the drivers; it should automatically download the appropriate drivers for that computer and install them in order it is supposed to be, because some people just install any driver they see under their service tag on the web, don’t even know the order how to install them. 3 Comments »

Make all AC Adapters 3-prong

submitted by iolanthe Jan 28

As there have been several stories online attributing a "tingle" sensation when using notebooks (of any kind, not just Dell!) that employ an AC adapter with only 2 prongs, Dell should make a 3-prong adapter the standard. The third prong provides a ground, which allows for a much more comfortable feeling as opposed to any kind of tingling or shock. Dell, please do this for the comfort and peace of mind of your customers!

You even talk about it on your own blog:
