Offer the Vostro 1700 with one flash SSD and one conventional hard drive

Dell, Vostro products submitted by markvs624 08/12/07

Being the only dual hard drive notebook in Dell's lineup, the Vostro 1700 has potential. Please offer the Vostro 1700 with the currently available 32GB SSD drive as a system drive and a conventional 7200rpm 250GB hard drive as a data drive. Obviously, it would be best to offer all available SSD's and conventional hard drives for each bay to give the user maximum control over the system's components, but at least make an SSD available in the primary drive bay. Also, dual drive configurations would be welcomed on any model in which they can be accommodated, especially all of the 17 inch models. 7 Comments »

No need for "special" Ubuntu machines

Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by xivulon 08/09/07

There is nothing special about Ubuntu machines. I have successfully installed Ubuntu on several Dell laptops and desktops over the years. I bet most of the hardware in your current offerings is probably already well supported by Linux out of the box and incompatibilities are more like individual exceptions (some wifi cards, some webcams, some video cards) rather than the rule.

Dell website already provides a conflict-resolution pop-up. If I select 2 incompatible choices I can see a warning message like the following:

Ubuntu Dell Compatibility Instructions

So instead of having "special" Ubuntu machines, give people a chance to choose Ubuntu on ANY laptop or desktop via the Customize > Operating System, and simply signal when there is an hardware choice that is not compatible.

That would make the Operating System choice clear and transparent, it would present Ubuntu as a real alternative to Windows as opposed to segregating it into a dark corner of your website, and it would clearly flag out manufacturers that have a less friendly attitude towards Linux customers thus incentivizing them to provide the required drivers. 2 Comments »

M1330 style in more sizes and colors

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by kyliemanders 08/06/07

Nearly everyone appreciates the styling of the XPS M1330.

Why not make this look available across the board. Offer it up in 11", 15.4", 17" and 20" versions. Come up with additional colors.

Don't ruin the M1730 and put it in a tacky package like this: [image removed - not public information] 37 Comments »

Make Dell Ubuntu PCs available to businesses and non-profits

Linux, Sales Strategies, Small Business submitted by wyleyr 06/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell is apparently not yet willing to sell Ubuntu-based PCs to business users, non-profits, or other organizations larger than a "home office." See this Ubuntu forum thread for more:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=478975

If Dell is serious about offering "choice" to consumers -- the main reason that they're offering up Ubuntu -- they ought to offer it to all their customers, including commercial and non-profit organizations.

Perhaps the greatest barrier here is that these other customers often require different support contracts than home users. It wouldn't be necessary to offer the same support options to organizations that purchase Ubuntu PCs as are offered to home users, or to organizations that purchase Windows PCs. (Perhaps Dell doesn't need to offer any support at all, except for hardware; as long as Canonical can support these organizations.) But they ought to at least have the option of buying the boxes, even if they have to get support in a different way.

Ubuntu on all models where it works

Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.

Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft.
We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

Downloadable, PDF format, full technical specs for all systems

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site submitted by benjesuit 06/12/07 **REVIEWED**

Before I buy, I would like to have the options of downloading the full technical specifications of the system. Not just the brief specifications. Place a link under "tech specs" tab that allows you to view or download the full specification PDF file for those of us who care about and understand such things. This way everyone is satisfied.
We are looking to improve the specs pages by making them consistent across all product lines, provide more in-depth specifications and making them available in a printable format.

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

LED Back Lighting

Monitors and Displays submitted by drew08867 06/28/07

Dell should transition all monitors to LED back lighting. More cost effective (in terms of energy use), greener, longer life. 10 Comments »

Dell's Website must work with Firefox running on Linux

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by qgonjon 07/16/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

It's discouraging to have a Tier 1 vendor (Dell) selling Linux products and yet not really tailoring to Linux. Don't get me wrong Dell, I am not trying to take away all the good you have done. Offering Linux is a step in the right direction and I would like to see more steps taken in a monthly or quarterly basis. But, it seems that the basis for your current Linux promotion is for the Open Source enthusiast like me. I use Linux at home and at work as my main operating system. I use Firefox as my browser and I'm trying to order a Dell Inspiron 1420N. However, it seems that the embedded flash script that shows the different colors choices for the Inspiron is not working under Linux. It also shows that I can't see the different images thereafter. It works with Windows running Firefox as my vmware machine verified. But that is not the type of user that will most likely purchase a Linux laptop.

My request is simple. Can someone fix and verify that this page works well with Linux browser technology? So, that users can enjoy purchasing your Linux products and demonstrate that Dell really cares about their customer's operating system preference.

Dell I wish you the best in this venture as your success in this territory will help the Linux Desktop become a reality to the open source community.

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage

Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

Make A Wireless Dell

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power. 220 Comments »

Make beautiful & innovative "all-in-one" style computers

Desktops submitted by jpaulynice 08/08/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Make INNOVATIVE and beautiful all-in-one computer designs. Or at least with that look and feel like that.

The reason that Microsfot makes so much money is because their OS is shipped with new computers. The reason everyone in the PC industry (Dell, HP) was so excited for Vista was because they knew that people would hear a new OS was out and would buy new computers.

Most people don't mess with the guts of a computer or upgrade components. Mostly moders and gamers. Making all-in-one models fit with the market; they give us space and something nice to look at.

The old Gateway 610XL media center computer was AMAZING!!! And to date, is the best computer I've ever used or seen. People were always impressed. And it recieved EXCELLENT reviews from everyone who reviewed it; I never read a bad review.

The computer was not created by Gateway; they only shipped it. The design was created in conjunction with Intel.

My recommendation is to create a better version that would kick the crap out of an Apple iMac. I get so jealous and mad when I see them innovate and you guys ship gray boxes??!!

We live in an age of Mach 5 Stealth jets and DNA sequencing! Please start acting like it.

Proposed Features:

* Subwoofer (This is was big deal; it delivered excellent sound)
* TV tuner (optional)
* 1GB (standard)
* Wireless networking standard (this was also a big deal)
* Built-in Webcamera
* DVD burner (standard)
* Wireless Keyboard and Mouse (preferrably standard; this made a difference and added a nice touch)
* Standard Media card reader
* Widescreen monitor
* Hardware compatiable with Linux
* Remote control
* Thin, light and sexy

Example of great all-in-one

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw 07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.

I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.

If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.

Thanks

This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.

TV Commercial for New Ubuntu PCs

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by josmar52789 05/03/07

Dell should produce a new commercial for the Ubuntu PCs. It could tell the consumers of America why Dell has chosen to pre-install Linux on mainstream computers and hopefully promote the advantages of this new endeavor. Plus, it's likely that Dell's Linux initiative would be much more successful. 115 Comments »

Organize the sales pages by need, not product line

Dell Web Site submitted by sernovitz 02/03/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The Dell shopping experience is all about Dell -- not the user. Currently, you have to walk through each product line, narrow by model, etc.

This isn't very useful to my mom, or anyone new to Dell. Even the latitude/inspiron choice is never explained.

Start with features -- walk the user through the choices until they get the perfect PC.

What size do you want? What are you going to do with it? Etc.

Check out our new Assistance Seeker to shop by what you need, not by price!
