Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vista™..." from any publication

Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07

It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self.

Somthing linke: "Dell supports muli-OS" would look good! Od: "Dell gives you the real choice" 61 Comments »

End PC Payola | Pioneer a PC Builder Code of Conduct

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/20/07

Dell's image was damaged by the $1bn Intel kickback scandal. Many in the computer industry believe that Microsoft's grip on Dell and other PC Builders is airtight due to secret deals and marketing kickbaks. Consumers appreciate lower prices on new Dell PCs thanks in part to bundled 3rd party software, however we are not permitted to choose the software that is pre-installed, and kickback deals are not transparent.

In the music recording and radio broadcasting industries, similar shady practices are called payola. Please, end PC payola, and give control back to your customers.

We encourage Dell to pioneer a voluntary PC Builder Code of Conduct, and regain the public trust.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise payola circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Transparency at Dell is necessary for true consumer choice. For example, transparency can be improved by providing the choice of pre-installing quality free and open source software (developed with near 100% transparency). Cast your vote to have the OPTION of buying a new Dell PC pre-installed with Linux and other free software like OpenOffice.org. 82 Comments »

Linux Preinstalado en DELL España

submitted by irio 02/20/07

8 Comments »

Novell?? OH NO!!! Test the OSS community waters!

Dell, Linux submitted by phubert 02/26/07

Dell finally posted a response to the input at this site but this statement: "as a result, we are working with Novell to certify our corporate client products for Linux," is unlikely to encourage many Linux users, given Novell's recent, highly controversial, arrangement with Microsoft, seen by many as only undermining Linux/OSS by creating unnecessary doubts about users rights TO Linux.

In the following paragraph, Dell provides this: "In addition to working with Novell, we are also working with other distributors and evaluating the possibility of additional certifications across our product line. We are continuing to investigate your other Linux-related ideas, so please continue to check here for updates.", which is somewhat more hopeful, at least.

I would hope Dell would consider community concerns, while identifying the unique needs of home/home office users (which is where Linspire/Ubuntu and the Crossover Office product come in).

Good luck Dell... to us all.

If you respond well, customers will respond also to you. But I also understand you face risks in any of the directions you choose to follow. Choose well.

A ban for Novell on my Dell

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by speedy 02/24/07

Novell, in partnership with Microsoft, attempt to the free development of Linux. If my favorite PCs producer, Dell, preinstall openSUSE or other software on their PCs I don't want to buy anything anymore. We must boycott Novell if we like Linux. 13 Comments »

Don't describe Windows as an "Upgrade"

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by stevefraser 02/19/07

If Linux is offered as the Operating System (As has been suggested many times on this site), don't describe an offer to purchase Windows as an "Upgrade", for example "Upgrade to Microsoft Windows for only $$$", Some other phrase should be used instead, such as "Add in Microsoft Windows for $$$", as the word Upgrade may give the impression that Windows is superior to Linux, and there are several people who would disagree with that statement. 8 Comments »

Not Novell Linux

Linux submitted by derekj61 02/27/07

Novell Linux ?!?!? Don't you get it, we want to have unincumbered Linux on the boxes, Debian, Slackware, Redhat, even Ubuntu or Linspire. Not a Microsoft product. The next thing we know the widget that we develop on our shiney Microsoft/Novell Linux box is owned by Microsoft. 6 Comments »

Thank you for the n series... please fix the prices!

Sales Strategies submitted by akerasi 02/24/07

Apparently it's cheaper to have Windows on your Dell than not to. Why is this? Please fix it, or at least tell us why... a large part of the reason for most who want Linux on a Dell is to save money and/or to not support Microsoft. I don't wish to support a company that chooses to push its poor excuse for an operating system through monopolistic practices, as proven in court numerous times. Although I'd prefer seeing pre-installed Linux, the n-series is indeed a step in the right direction. Ubuntu, SuSE, vanilla Debian, and Redhat/Fedora being options would make me happy. 5 Comments »

Stop using Microsoft and Intel as crutches

Dell submitted by ronsemail 02/17/07

Try innovating without Microsoft or Intel as your R&D lab. Go hire and staff a kick butt set of designers and engineers and pay them the better than anyone else. In fact pay all of your staff better than anyone else, in 3 years you will be the best brand in the business. Try spending some of your customers money on product development instead of putting it your bank account. 4 Comments »

Sue Microsoft and get out of the Windows Monopoly

Dell, Operating Systems submitted by juanjodic 02/20/07

Microsoft is a business designed to extract money by force from customers, it's not a product customers are excited to buy and give money in exchange. Its a Monopoly.

A lot of people just had it with windows, too much hackers and virus, too much marketing included in explorer too much promises of improvements and they keep delivering the same OS with new names and less options unless you pay more for the same options that where included before! 10 Comments »

Stop Selling Microsoft products

Dell, Linux submitted by plbogen 02/21/07

You could reduce $100s of dollars on every machine by using a pure OSF system.

Firefox + Ubuntu + Openoffice would provide MORE abilities for customers while saving them money.

At best Microsoft products should be a paid upgrade. 1 Comment »

Why pay the Microsoft tax when u can get the same for a lot less?

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by uomolinux 02/23/07

I'm now a Mac fan but still use a Windows laptop here at home and probably will use a PC for the rest of my life since I need a PC here and at the office, I'm a technician. I wok in a mental health, non profit organisation, witch rely heavily on old PC since we can't afford to pay the Microsoft tax.

Mos users use the computer for word processing and Internet(Firefox), software that can run easily on Linux. My point is that if our organization didn't had to pay the MS tax we could probably afford new computers witch is not the case right now since most desktop are still expensive due to the MS tax, witch probably account for 200$ to 300$ more with Office included, not much for rich corporation but way to expensive for US.

I know that Dell computers are great and not very expensive, but think about a computer without MS products(MS tax) they would be way more attractive for poorer corp or organizations, there is a market there just for Dell to grab if they consider offering alternative to the monopoly-money-hungry MS. 2 Comments »

Linux options - it must avoid the Microsoft Tax

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by royeasto 02/28/07

I like the new ordering site but would like more options. I don't want to buy a screen or mouse or keyboard, I already have loads of them. Offering systems without unwanted extras would be a very environmentally friendly step. I don't want to buy a screen I have a beautiful Elo touchscreen that is delightful for most operations. I would recommend an option of a touchscreen. But most of all I want to use my machine for Linux. I have 3 Linux systems, one Windows XP and one Mac at home.

I haven't bought my last few machines from you as you do not offer a system without an OS or with Linux pre-installed. I feel that buying from you I am paying my money to support Microsoft dominating the software world. I don't care what distro you put on it as I would replace it with FC6, 7... 2 Comments »

Stop allegiance to Microsoft

Dell submitted by danielpf 02/28/07

I find the obvious allegiance of Dell to Microsoft disgusting. Most somewhat knowledgeable Microsoft users I know of in fact *hate* Windows, because the user experience with Windows is poor, or because Microsoft's arrogance and monopoly become unbearable. People are forced to use Microsoft products due to monopoly, not by choice. In this context, Dell plays the role of a servile vassal, which is bad for its image.

On the other hand Dell produces fine hardware. Each time I have bought Dell laptops I was strongly hesitating to take another brand just because off the obligatory attached Microsoft software. Some time ago I had to choose 66 high performance servers for my company: the deal with Dell was technically competitive, but the deal went to another company clearly less dependent on Microsoft.

My sincere best idea that I offer to Dell is to cut its strong ties with Microsoft. 2 Comments »

Linux pre-installed

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by aelphus 03/07/07

Consider offering a line of PCs loaded only with Linux (e.g.
OpenSuse).

License and charge (as part of the price of the PC) for
extra high-quality fonts (since the open source fonts
are of variable quality); this will make the PC more
attractive to potential business customers who are
used to seeing high quality true type fonts on MS PCs and
Apple MACs.

Include applications such as OpenOffice, or closed source
apps such as Softmaker's Textmaker, which is a lightweight
but good word processor; unlike OpenOffice, Textmaker
runs natively on Linux and is very fast.

Use KDE as the default desktop but also include
instructions showing how customers can also
start in text mode and then start up the windowing
system.

Get linux PCs into stores for potential customers to
see--many would be willing to give linux a try.
Think of the old days when people flocked to buy
DOS and all sorts of arcane utility manuals and programs.
The same thing could be true for linux

For linux to be successful vs MS a number of
things are required:

1. Easy installation / re-installation (most modern
distros are pretty good in this regard e.g.
OpenSuse) - good hardware detection and
"handholding" during installation are key.

2. Good quality fonts- whatever one thinks of MS,
the desktop has nice quality fonts, not ragged
looking like some of the linux fonts.

3. At least a few useful, fast apps e.g. Textmaker
word processor, some scientific / engineering
apps, spreadsheet, graphics -- that's all
most people would need for a start.

4. A large brand name such as Dell (in addition
to the foregoing) to give the customer confidence
in the product. Comment »

Drop the distinction between home and small business

Sell PC's and laptops without Windows!

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by hansv 03/08/07

Why do we need to pay Microsoft for running a free O/S on our laptops?
I want the option of buying a laptop without an O/S and install the O/S of my choice. Virtually all Linux laptop users have paid for a MS Windows license when they bought their machine although they don't use the software. This is not correct and it generates wrong statistics about O/S market penetration. 1 Comment »

Replace FreeDOS with Linux

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by unoengborg 03/08/07

Some Dell systems ship with no OS preinstalled and FreeDOS on separate media.
I doubt that there actually is somebody that uses this. The people who buy these
boxes do so to install Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, or even some old versioin of windows
that no longer is in production, but the most common OS for these boxes, judging from other posts on this site, is most likely Linux.

So, why not drop the FreeDOS disk and replace it with some form of Linux. It doesn't
really matter what distro as long as you tell what kernel it runs and what devices it supports whitout doing any kernel or driver recompilations. Do also provide chip level hardware specifications. E.g. don't say the laptop have wirless ip, say that it have wireless ip using intel ipw2200.

If you can't offer support for Linux just be clear about it. Most people interested in Linux would raise your status to close to hero, only if you provide the necessary information to know if your hardware actually will work with Linux before they buy. Shipping boxes with FreeDOS gives no such information. Naturally I have no objections, if you actually manage to provide good Linux support, at least for the distro you choose to use. 1 Comment »

Don't just install Linux but Also Support Linux

Linux submitted by barry5280 03/08/07

Not only should you install 5 of the top distributions but also help support and promote them. Take $20 for example of what you would of paid Microsoft and donate those proceeds to Ubuntu or which ever. You still come out better than if you paid microsoft and the Open Source Community can also continue what they are doing. This may still bother some people that want everything for free but I don't think most people that are requesting Linux would mind a $20 donation to the Linux Distributor to help the cause. A lot of these "Free" Linux distributions rely on donations, I've donated to my favorite distribution because I want to see it continue and prosper. Don't just pull an Oracle and undercut the Linux Distributor (Red Hat for Example). 1 Comment »
