Offer a 14.1" Vostro notebook PC again.

Vostro products submitted by winoffice Jun 21

http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/vostronb?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s...

I am really disappointed that Dell is no longer offering a 14.1" Vostro notebook PC and has replaced that with a 13.3" one. I have compared 14.1" notebooks with 13.3" ones, and 14.1" is the better screen size by far. Please Dell, offer a 14.1" Vostro notebook again. I do not want to be forced into buying another notebook line to get a 14.1" screen size. 2 Comments »

Hot-swappable laptop batteries.

Laptop Power submitted by jmxz May 31

I'd like to be able to swap the battery on my laptop without having to turn it off or hibernate it. It seems you could do this by putting a large capacitor or tiny internal battery that could provide power for the 30 seconds or so it takes to switch to a spare battery. Another way you might be able to do this is instead of having one big battery in each laptop, have 2 small ones instead; and you could swap them one at a time.

If it was really easy to swap them I'd probably buy more spare batteries; so I could go most of the day without plugging in the laptop (and then I'd want an external charger so I could charge them all overnight). 25 Comments »

Make 3 Year Warranty Default on all your PCs/Laptop.

Service and Support submitted by thebittersea Jun 16

I believe sales will increase if Dell makes the "3-year" warranty as part of the standard package with their PCs.

I think everyone wants it but on one's willing to pay for the extended warranty. 26 Comments »

Low cost staff shouldn't mean untrained staff...

Service and Support submitted by cestuila May 31

Of course, when you hire someone who will stay 6 months in the company and pay him/her a basic wage... you don't want to invest in him/her.
But some basic product knowledge is NECESSARY!

Here's a recent situation I read: someone going on the Dell chat and asking what accessories come with the XPS M1330 (thinking about the headphones, remote control, second skin, etc.) and the chat person just answers that that laptop doesn't come with ANY accessory!!!

So maybe that person thought, if I don't tell him the laptop comes with accessories, he might buy them so more sales for the company! (I don't actually think that person thought so much...) But the reality is that this customer had already placed his order and just wanted confirmation.
In the end, he now is about to cancel his order (although I told him that he WILL receive the accessories) because he is unsure he will get them...

So the situation is that DELL may actually lose business because of untrained personnel. 7 Comments »

The XPS M2030

XPS products submitted by darthomer May 23

Resume the XPS M2010 Line with the XPS M2030. It is for people who want to bring the AWSOME power and Resolution of a Dell XPS 730 with them on the go. It is for X-treme Gaming and CPU Killing Simulations (Like Flight Simulator X) I have Some Pictures of it (They are screenshots of a detailed Google Sketchup 6 model) I want it to be as light and as thin as possible. Assuming that the GPU and Hard drive are thick I think it will be as thick as a XPS M1730 But if the parts are thinner please dell make it as light and thin as possible if you make this Laptop. unlike the XPS M2010 Its a Real Laptop not a Portable Desktop. Here is a description of the design, it has the basic shape of a XPS M1530 and I forgot to put the Dell Logos on the barrel Hinges like on a XPS M1530 but the Final Design should have that, It has the Glowing Wings (The area seen around the two XPS logos) like on XPS M1710s and XPS M1730s, It has the glowing letters on the keyboard the glowing XPS logo on the mouse pad and on the bottom of the buttons on the mouse pad. Here are some pictures

Prospective :

Tech (showing where stuff is) :

If you and Dell find better places to put stuff and more good features (like more USB ports) please tell me

Here are the specs:

Operating System: Windows Vista Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate

Screen : HD Truelife 20.1" screen with built-in Microphone and 2.0 Megapixel Webcam

CPU : 3.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme over-clocked form 2.8GHz

GPU : 1024MB Nvidia e-Geforce 9800 GX2 SCC Edition SLI ready (The ATI Raidon Crossfire X Used on the Alienware ALX is equal to this one and the Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX is only 512MB !!! The resolution 1920 x 1200 is like cutting butter to this Monster )

PPU (Physics Processing Unit ) : AGIEA PhysX Accelerator

RAM: 8GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 667MHz

Hard Drive : RAID Performance 700GB 7200RPM, Nearly 1TB!

Sound Card : X-FI X-treme HD Audio

Internet : Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card

Internal Optical Drive : CD-RW, DVD-RW, and BR-RW (CD, DVD, Blue Ray) Reading and Writing Drive

logos in the chrome wings, vents on the front (like on a XPS M1710) 44 Comments »

Notebook ports on the back

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by falbert May 22

Am I the only one that hates having ports of anykind on the sides of my notebook. I like my ports out of sight in the back.
Maybe the headphone jack in the front and a few USB ports on the sides at the back.
I would suggest dropping : parralel, serial, pcmcia, infrared, mic input (integrate it in or use bluetooth) and the modem (who uses 56k modems today???) 10 Comments »

Offer an XPS 12" inch notebook Again

Sales Strategies, XPS products, Laptops submitted by nsenman May 16

I used to have the m1210 and m710 laptop notebooks and they were great machines to tote around. Include great specs like the m1210 had. give such things as a strong video card, HDMI, 1394, 3 or more USB ports, swivel webcam, fingerprint reader, etc. You created an awesome performing notebook in the m1210 but it wasn't stylish enough like the m1330. Create an awesome 12'' designer laptop and people will buy it. 7 Comments »

Duo PC

Desktops, New Product Ideas submitted by nkama May 18

I would like to share an idea I have thinking last time, about of creation of one PC with function of two PC's. I mean, one pc being used by two people with two different desktop and processing different data, just like people using two computer normally. This idea raised after noticing that many household face more and more need of buying two or more computers for the family members. And to me, woould sound better if your company produces a pc with function of two pc's and supplying information to two different monitors with their keyboard, and preferably a wireless pc and monitors as well the keyboards. These pc's could be used in the companies as well as in the offices.

With kind regards,

Re-install of purchased software on purchased system

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by turtleandhare May 16

From time to time, it does becomes necessary for a customer to get back to the software configuration delivered on their computer. The current process of supplying several disks to accomplish this fails for the following reasons.
The installation process expects users to pick out various drivers, etc. about which they know NOTHING. In fact the current process, for the average user, fails to live up to its expectations.
Proposal:
Deliver one or more CDs/DVDs/floppy disks/flash drive from which a boot process can occur that would initialize hard disk drives and then copy essentially a backup of the entire system as the system was first delivered to the purchaser. The boot up instructions could be externally printed on these disks. No longer would a user be expected to figure out what drivers are needed, etc. If Dell does not want to do this, then maybe this could be an extra cost option for mininal cost. 5 Comments »

No OEM Junk software, revival of recovery DVD/CD's NOT partitions

Desktops, Software submitted by mgin2k3 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

First, I hate it when I buy a computer and right when I turn it on out of the box, it's got a lot of junk software installed (AOL trial, Nortion Anti-Virus trial, etc). Get rid of these trial and non-trial OEM softwares or at least give the customer the option of not having them installed. I end up wasting so much time trying to uninstall all this junk anyways and I'm sure I'm not alone. I like having a clean install when I get a new computer (or when I'm recovering). And by clean I mean Windows (or whatever other OS the user may enjoy) and NOTHING else. Secondary OEM software can be included on a separate disc for the user to select manual installation (or request preinstallation of for new purchase orders).

Secondly, recovery partitions are terrible. Aside from the fact that they waste harddisc space, if the harddrive were to become toast or to be upgraded, not only would the user lose the original installation, but they would also lose the recovery data. Has this single point of failure not come to anyone's attention? CD's and DVD's can be preciously taken care and you never have to worry about losing both the installation and recovery partition all at once.

Dells pricing needs to be more competative

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 09/06/07

My son is begging for a laptop, his current Dell Desktop is on its last legs anyway so I decided to look around. I can find a notebook for as low as $319.96 on sale at box stores and from $450 online from manufacturers. The cheapest Dell I can find starts at $549 and has worse specs than what I found elsewhere. I looked at desktops as well and the story is the same. I even checked the Dell outlet and they don't really even discount items that much there.

I'm trying to support Dell but they aren't really helping me help them. They need to be more competative with their pricing. 26 Comments »

1cell light weight battery option

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by pell 06/21/07

As far as I know a lot of people use their notebooks only at home/work/hotel where a power outlet can be easily found. So their notebooks are almost always plugged to an external power source.

Thus a lot of notebook users really do not need their heavy batteries and 2-3-4-etc hours of mobile computing but only pseudo-UPS option which can be granted with a light weight 1cell battery.

Also 1cell battery can save:

(a) money

(b) weight

(c) environment (afaik modern batteries are not "green" devices) 8 Comments »

Cut the cost of a 9-cell battery upgrade

Sales Strategies, Laptop Power submitted by ccpljat May 6

Yes a 9-cell is more powerful and lasts longer, but $169? Come on. It can't be that much. Cut down the price to honestly reflect the difference. I mean good grief, you can buy a 9-cell replacement for an Inspiron 1720 for $154! An upgrade is always supposed to be less.

FIX IT, DELL!!!! 8 Comments »

Why wait to release specs?

New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by mostlyharmless22 May 13

Eee 900 PC and HP Mini-Note 2133 are selling like hotcakes and just about every other laptop manufacturer in existence has released tentative specs for a low-cost sub-notebook. Meanwhile, Dell drags its feet on releasing specs for its own. If you read the blogs, there are multitudes who want to wait to see what Dell comes out with but are losing patience and buying the new Eee or, if they aren't worried about mechanical hard drives, the HP Mini-Note. Every single Eee 900 or Mini-Note sold is a sale that Dell coud have had. Very bad idea. 13 Comments »

Portable power supply

New Product Ideas, Laptop Power submitted by magiting May 5

Hi Mr. Michael Dell,

I would like to suggest if you can make another product line
which is a rechargeable 2.5 inch Li-Ion battery that is a plug-n-play design. I do not have doubts about the batteries that today's laptops have but each brand are making their own design. I wish a USB insert portable power supply would debut in the market sold by Dell which can have a battery power ranging from 2-5hours. This is especially good when in the mountains camping or making seminars in remote areas. It is a path towards standardized portable power supply for laptops.

Thanks,

More Options on the XPS 630

Gaming, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by darkness_flame May 4

Personally, I like the XPS 630; it's only a few hundred more than making a similar computer yourself, but it has a really nice case, is put together for you, and comes under warranty. However, I would really like to see more options available on this computer, as well as some changes made.

Processor: Add more quad core options. You only choose between the cheapest, and one of the most expensive. I think Dell should allow the Q9300, Q9450, and Q9550 to be options. If none others, at least the Q9450; it is an extremely popular quad core processor, and could be offered at about $100 more than the Q6600 that is offered now.

Memory: As more gamers move towards Vista, they are realizing how the operating system can utilize more RAM. I would think the options for more RAM and higher speed RAM should be cheaper.

Graphic Cards: Add the option for the NVidia 9600GT. It is growing excessively popular, is cheaper than the 8800 GT and the 3870, and has nearly as much speed as the 3870. It has all of that while still offering relatively high speed. I think the XPS 630 would benefit from having this card as a slightly cheaper option that still provides a lot of performance with less power.

Motherboard: This is an option that I have never seen used. However, I would like to see Dell offer the NVidia 750i chipset as an optional motherboard upgrade. If offered for a $50-100 upgrade, it could allow the buyers to better utilize the full speed of the Wolfdale and Yorkfield cores, as well as have better performance overall.

I believe that if those ideas were implemented and put into action, Dell would further draw in the PC Gaming crowd. 5 Comments »

Monitor price too high!

Advertising and Marketing, Monitors and Displays submitted by junior May 12

Dell, the price of the new Dell UltraSharp 3008WFP at a starting price of $1999....this is a rip-off. I've seen an 47" LCD HDTV with 1080p at just $1199 CDN and is cheaper in US Dollars. Maybe think about lowering the price of this monitor in the near future. 7 Comments »
