Make PC 8500 RAM and Turbo RAM standard

Desktops and Laptops submitted by wallyhorse 3 days ago

This level of RAM (PC 8500, 1.067 GHz) is already being offered on Lenovo's new level of laptops, and is something Dell should also be looking at doing on ALL of its computers (as opposed to the current 800 MHz RAM for desktops and 667 MHz RAM for laptops).

In addition, Dell should also offer a Turbo RAM option (Lenovo also currently offer a 2GB Turbo RAM option) on all of its laptops. 2 Comments »

Add the newer laptop processors (P7350, T9400, etc.) to the list of those offered as options

New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by wallyhorse Aug 9

One thing that needs to be done:

Dell should begin offering the newer laptop processors (including the P7350, T9400 and T9600) as soon as possible as those processors are the first laptop processors with 1066 FSBs, and along with the new Quad Core Laptop Processor (due this fall) should be in the mix. I would offer at least the T9400 in particular on ALL Inspirion and Studio laptops as well as the new Studio 9" desktop. 1 Comment »

4GB RAM and E8000 series processors on XPS One

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Servers and Storage, XPS products submitted by wallyhorse Apr 14

Got a look at the XPS one over the weekend, and especially now for the first time that I can remember it offering at least the E6550 processor I would be looking at. But the big drawback is you can only take it right now with 2GB of RAM. With that in mind, I would look for that machine at making the following additional options:

1. Having XPS Ones with at least 4GB or RAM (or more if possible) as an option. This would appeal to those who want more than 2GB of RAM.

2. Offer the newer E8000 series processors in the XPS one. Not only do those apparently use less power, but they also have a 6MB Cache/1333 FSB as opposed to 4MB/1333 FSB for the E6550 or 2MB/800 FSB for the E4500.

These two changes would make the XPS One much more appealing in my opinion. 4 Comments »

Value Packs for 17" laptops

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by wallyhorse Mar 2

On all of Dell's laptops, you notice an option for a "Value Pack" that includes "Backpack Basics": A backpack for 15.4" notebooks, a travel mouse and combo lock. Especially since there seems to no longer be an option to get the combo lock by itself with the laptop on the accesories, I would look at doing a new "Backpack Basics" option for 17" laptiops that includes a backpack for such sized laptops. with a combo lock as an option as well. Why isn't the Intel T9300 (2.5 Ghz/6MB Cache/800Mhz) processor available on the Inspiron 1420/1520/1525 laptops?

Inspiron products, Sales Strategies submitted by wallyhorse Feb 29

It is interesting that the new Intel T9300 (2.5 Ghz/6MB Cache/800Mhz) processor is only available as an option in the Inspiron laptop series on the 1720 and NOT on the 1420, 1520 or 1525 laptops. In addition, while the T8300 (2.4 Ghz/3MB Cache/800Mhz Processor) is an option on the 1420 and 1520 (and 1720), that also is NOT an option on the 1525. Why is that?

I would myself make the T8300 and T9300 options available on the 1525 and the T9300 option available on the 1420 and 1520 laptops myself. I'm sure Dell would sell more of those with those two as options. 9 Comments »

Using Desktop Processors on Laptops

Laptops submitted by wallyhorse Feb 17

One thing I have noticed recently is there are some smaller outfits that actually have laptops that use the Desktop Core2Duo (usually E6000 series) processors, especially on the larger laptops (like the 17" Inspiron and the 17" and 20.1" XPS). This is something that I wonder if Dell would be able to do also. If so, it would make for some of the fastest laptops in the business. 9 Comments »

Offer computers running XP, but including an upgrade to Vista that can be done whenever a customer is ready

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by wallyhorse 05/10/07

A way perhaps around the current problems with Vista:

Tiger Direct is now offering computers that come with Vista, but are running XP where customers can upgrade to Vista when they want to. This perhaps is what Dell should also be doing, as those who still want XP now can get a computer with XP, but then can upgrade to Vista whenever they want to do so (with Dell providing the media for both in case someone has to completely reboot their hard drive).

Sounds like a fair compromise to me. 3 Comments »

Ultra Small Form Factors

Desktops and Laptops submitted by wallyhorse 03/23/07

Dell is missing out I think in a big home market:

The Ultra Small Form Factor computers (OptiPlex) Dell sells to business is something Dell should be looking at for consumers. While not everyone would want one of the very small PCs, that, coupled with an all-in-one monitor (with a basket for the USSF computer) I think would be very popular with people who live where space is at a premium. This is very true in particular in New York, where some people live in apartments smaller than many people's closets (no joke).

The Ultra Small Form Factors, as well as the slightly larger Small Form Factors should be made available to consumers who I think would appreciate such. 9 Comments »

Make 4GB Ram, 200-320GB Hard Drives Standard on ALL Dell Systems

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by wallyhorse 03/14/07

(Edited to update, see my most recent post on March 4, 2008):

This should really be looked at:

While people would see a "more expensive" desktop or laptop being advertised, given 2GB of RAM is strongly recommended for Vista in particular, I would take a serious look at making 2GB of RAM STANDARD on ALL Dell Systems, with 200GB Hard Drives standard for laptops and 250 GB Hard Drives standard for Desktops. These two options right there should be standard for ALL Dell Systems, though for those who are more price-concious to some degree, allowing such computers to be downgraded (as well as for those who want more, upgraded) in that regard.

I would also do the same with the processors. On the Core 2 Duo, for Laptops I would make 2.0 GHz the standard offered while on Desktop doing the same with 2.4 GHz, as they are the slowest processors with a 4MB Cache. For the Pentium D, I would make 3.0 GHz (4MB Cache) the standard as well. In all cases, I would again, also allow for downgrades on such.

I would also for all laptops make TWO 9-Cell Batteries and TWO AC adapters STANDARD. This would also be downgradable, however, it would again be designed for those who want to be wireless longer, which will continue to be the case as technology advances further.

Just my thoughts. 14 Comments »

Some suggestions to offer on desktops, including offering the Ultra Small Form Factors sold on the business end to home users

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Sales Strategies submitted by wallyhorse 03/07/07

This is mainly for the desktops:

One thing I'd like to see offered on the E520 are the faster Core2Duo processors, namely allowing customers to go up to at least 2.4 Ghz (4MB Cache, 1066 FSB) on such. Also, how come there isn't a C520 similar to the C521 for Intel processors, as some of us would love to have the smaller computers.

Speaking of small computers, how about offering the smaller OptiPlex Desktops on the home and home office side. Many people I know in particular would love to get the ultra small form factor machines that (currently can only be purchased by the general public through Dell Outlet and/or DFS Financial and/or on auction outlets like Ebay) do everything like the larger desktops, and I suspect if offered with the same wide variety of processors as the business desktops would be extremely popular.

These are just my opinions on such. Comment »
