Cut the cost of a 9-cell battery upgrade

Sales Strategies, Laptop Power submitted by ccpljat May 6

Yes a 9-cell is more powerful and lasts longer, but $169? Come on. It can't be that much. Cut down the price to honestly reflect the difference. I mean good grief, you can buy a 9-cell replacement for an Inspiron 1720 for $154! An upgrade is always supposed to be less.

XPS M1530 Enhancements

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by vanza Apr 25

The specs of the M1530 look great, but there are some enhancements that would make it much better. A few that have been already proposed:

. Gigabit Ethernet
. Non-glossy screen option
. GeForce 8700 graphics card

And a few I haven't seen here yet:

. e-SATA port
. S/PDIF or optical audio out in the default config.
. move one of the headphone connectors to the side for the above connection.

I know you currently can get S/PDIF out with the Sound Blaster XFi. But that card is not supported on Linux - there are beta drivers, but no goodies like S/PDIF passthrough. Also, the relocated output port would make it less cumbersome to actually have the S/PDIF or optical cable connected to the computer. 5 Comments »

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Add higher screen resolution to all home & home office laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by ccpljat Apr 25

I have been using a used [another brand's] business laptop that has a high screen resolution. The cheaper Inspiron laptops can only go up to 1280x800. I cannot be productive on a screen that small any more. At least bump it up to 1440x900 or equivalent. I have basically been forced to shop in the Small Business section to find an affordable computer with a higher screen resolution. 4 Comments »

Use the Intel network cards instead of Broadcom

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by thefirstm Apr 25

I think that Dell should stop integrating the wired Broadcom 44xx card (or 57xx card for professional PCs). Since as far as I can remember, every Dell laptop has come standard with these, where the Intel counterparts are much better. Every Intel chipset since the ICH2 southbridge has come with an integrated ethernet controller, and since the ICH5 this has been a gigabit controller. Additionally, it seems as if it would be cheaper to use the Intel controller. To utilize it, all you have to do is add a PHY chip instead of a whole ethernet controller. I think Dell needs to get over its Broadcom thing and start offering gigabit controllers in its home and small business laptops by switching to the Intel integrated controller. 7 Comments »

Show Max Specs in System Descriptions

Desktops and Laptops submitted by dfrandin Apr 23

It would make research on ordering Dell systems if the maximum values of RAM, hard drive size etc, were shown on the system description pages. A good example of what I'm talking about: The Optiplex 755, shows on the memory section, "Up to 4.0GB DDR2 Non-ECC SDRAM, 800MHz, (4DIMM)". However, if you take the time to read the online Optiplex service manual, you find that the system supports
2GB DIMMs, for a total of up to 8GB.. A non-technical user would not know to double-check the service manual to find that information out.. Also the Storage entry states "Up to SATA 3.0Gb/s, RAID 1 Data Security, Capacities up to 250GB".. I strongly suspect that the 755 is not limited to a 250GB drive.
In the case of RAM, with 64Bit OS becoming more popular and RAM (other than Dell) dropping in price, the 8GB support on the 755, I'm sure, will be heavily used. Please let your customers and potential customers learn this info without resorting to reading the service manual... 3 Comments »

And go for the Apple power plug it just a great idea smart and simple.

Provide ubuntu's next LTS iso, 100% compatible with Dell

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by shaikailash Apr 10

I'ts going to be release the long term support (LTS) version of ubuntu, Hardy Heron 8.04. It will be supported by the community for 3 years.

It could be useful and appreciate (I think) if DELL will customize this distro to be compatible with the hardware of Dell's laptops and desktops, and permit to download the official iso from the website.

It could be fantastic to download the iso, install it and have an operative system perfectly working.
Many people could be convinced to buy a Dell with Linux, without go crazy with the hardware compatibility.

Inexpensive magnesium-alloy case Latitude based on AMD Puma platform, like D531!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by mandarinka Apr 10

What is good about Latitude D531 is that while it comes cheap thanks to the inexpensive CPU, it has got the same build quality - it employs magnesium alloy case.

I would like to see Puma platform based Latitudes similar to D531 in the future notebook line. According to the web rumor/leak, The E5000 line Latitudes would employ only ABS plastic case, magnesium alloy being reserved for the E6000 line. Please, offer an AMD option in the E6000 line as well. Intel GPU quality mandates dedicated graphic board, while AMD offers good enough integrated one, thus saving a lot of power. Also offers universal video decoder. 3 Comments »

Make laptops phsically thinner, less clunky

Laptops submitted by jordananton Apr 10

Personally I would never buy a laptop more than about 1.3" - 1.4" thick at its highest point. Hence why I have only looked at but never purchased a Dell (I only look at 17" notebooks). Take some tips from the success of Mac who seem to be the only company out there putting the right amount of focus into making their products (laptops and ipods at least) as thin as possible and their customers love them for it. They love it when they shave .1" off their ipods and then compare them to the thickness of other everyday utensils. So I know I am not the only person out there who feels this way. Thickness plays a large part in a laptops physical appeal. It also makes it more convenient to carry around; easier to squeeze in to your backpack or any tight spaces.

From what I can tell, Dell's 17" XPS laptops are some of the thickest in the biz and I don't think there is any reason why they should be. I really want a 17" XPS but until they slim it down, I will do my shopping elsewhere. Please please Dell, pay some attention to the physical aspects of your laptops, slim them down and make them more appealing to look at. 17 Comments »

There's apparently a new "fastest chip on earth" - sell servers and workstations with them.

Dell, New Product Ideas submitted by jmxz Apr 10

This sounds interesting:
IBM chip is fastest on Earth

IBM Corp. began shipping high-end computers Tuesday built around the fastest chip on Earth, a microprocessor that can carry out up to 5 billion instructions per second, surpassing the speediest competing processors built by rivals like Intel or Sun Microsystems.

Selling servers and workstations with such chips might have a number of advantages:

  1. Microsoft can't accuse you of contributing to Windows piracy if you sell these with No OS

  2. It'd help you compete against HP (who gets special advantages with Itanium thanks to their initial work on the chip), Sun and Fujitsu (who each have their high-end sparc lines; and IBM (who of course uses this chip)
  3. It'd probably make for a more fun Intel negotiation.
  4. All the old Apple guys who were vehemently anti-Intel might switch to you

Dell: join in! Offer a low-cost Linux PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by phubert Apr 2

It appears Dell remains afraid of Microsoft... and here is an answer we haven't heard from Dell on IdeaStorm:

"The top PC makers have so far treaded carefully. Dell's website sells Ubuntu computers in a separate section for open-source PCs, out of direct comparison with Windows machines. Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden said the placement reflects the fact that Linux is still not a mainstream consumer product."

From the USA Today article:

Burst of low-end PCs could boost Linux

"Business computing suppliers are finding open-source desktops especially gaining traction in cost-conscious developing markets. For example, IBM and Linux vendor Red Hat recently launched Microsoft-free desktops for Eastern Europe.

One buyer is Aleksandar Spagnut, a director of Moscow-based Rushotel, which needed new desktop PCs for a hotel-building project. Spagnut said his company saved 30 to 35% over comparable Windows machines. He added that Linux PCs are now common enough that a snowball effect is emerging, whereby technical support and "drivers" — which essentially tell programs how to interact with hardware — are much easier to find." ****

Have Ubuntu on Dell One

Linux, XPS products submitted by daniel117 Mar 12

After hearing a couple magazines and people say Vista has glitches, I think Dell's best computer ever (and best counterpart of Apple's Macs) this computer company should start looking into Linux more, especially Ubuntu. Oh sure, Dell didn't get enough people into Ubuntu, but that can be easily fixed by putting Linux into Dell One. Dell is missing out on more sales from Ubuntu fans and all you geeks out there. Not much of them, but popularity would spread and soon Vista is in the dust (not that I hate Vista, but I like Ubuntu better). 11 Comments »

The 15" XPS should compete feature for feature with the MacBook Pro

XPS products submitted by ncd Mar 17

There is no reason why Dell cannot make all of the features of the Apple MacBook Pro available on the XPS of similar size. Some options that are missing from the XPS are:

Available Penryn processors (as of 03/18/2008).
512MB of memory on the 8600M GT video card.
LED backlit display.
Illuminated keyboard in low ambient light environments.
Quick-disconnect power connectors.

Notebook thickness should also match or better that of the MacBook pro. Also, consider illuminating the Dell logo on the cover as Apple does (using color instead of plain white) to give the XPS that "gotta have it" quality and a big image boost for Dell. 15 Comments »

Docking Station for M1330

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by nmrrja1 Mar 27

I love the idea of the more powerful laptops that have been coming to market, esp. those with dedicated graphics. The M1210 was the first notebook I have been exicited about in a long time, expecially with Dell's industry leading docking stations. But wait, the M1210 didn't get a docking connector and wait. the M1210 has now been replaced. Surely the M1330 has a docking connector. It is after all, one of the most powerfull laptops of its size available. Wait, ah NO, no docking connector.

Ok Dell, its like this:

You get to sell me one computer. Not one desktop and one laptop, just ONE computer. I know that doesn't fit the old business model, but times have changed. I don't think I should be limited to a Latitude series notebook to get dedicated graphics and a docking station. Please, Please, Please integrate a docking connector in this (or the next) XPS series of notebooks. You will still get to sell me that one computer, but I will also be buying a seperate mouse and keyboard, excellent Dell LCD monitor and speakers of some sort.

And why we are at it, I like the 12.1" screen and smaller form factor of the first generation XPS series. I'll take mine in LED backlit too.

Windows XP and Blu-Ray on XPS m1730

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by houdini Mar 21

I am buying an XPS m1730 in a few weeks and whilst going through all the options on the Dell "customize your laptop" page I was very disappointed to see that I could only order a blu-ray optical drive with Windows Vista and not XP. This is a shame as I don't want Vista, but I want blu-ray. At first I thought it was because XP doesn't support blu-ray, but upon further investigation I came across this forum (located at end of post).

You need to ensure that if a customer is willing to spend $5k + on one of your machines then you should include all possible options available. For example you could say that if a customer wanted to have a blu-ray drive with a XP O/S then they would need to buy Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra to get the full use out of it, or you could just bundle it in a package package
