Need a non-gaming notebook with hi-res and DVI/HDMI

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by jcsalem Feb 6

My business needs notebooks with high-resolution TruLife screens and DVI or HDMI out. It would be fine if the DVI/HDMI were only available via a docking port.

We're a small photography business that does a lot of 1-on-1 client presentations on the road and having the high-resolution, high-contrast screen is essential. In the office, we need DVI (preferably) or HDMI output for our desktop displays. I suspect there are many other kinds of businesses in a similar situation.

The only laptops that fit this bill are the high-end XPS gaming laptops and the Precision Workstation laptops. These are heavier, much larger, and more expensive than we'd like. They also feature much more 3D graphics horsepower than we'll ever use and their battery life is subpar.

The Latitudes are good except they don't have the TrueLife displays. The Vostros would be perfect except no DVI. Same with the Inspirons.

Can't we get something like a Vostro 1500 or a Latitude D830 with WSXGA+, TrueLife, and DVI out? 13 Comments »

DVI ports on notebooks and tablets

Laptops submitted by sjss 02/21/07

With modern monitors and equipment shifting more and more towards DVI connections, and the fact that a DVI to VGA convertor is trivially obtained, but there are no VGA to DVI convertors easily obtainable, it makes sense to move notebooks to DVI. Those with VGA monitors can still easily connect them to their monitors, and those with DVI monitors will be able to use their monitors as well. 5 Comments »

laptops and ports

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by lodore 10/30/07

hello,
i think dell laptops should have a DVI connector instead of the older VGA connector.
also i think dell laptops should have gigabit ethernet connections where possible.

HDMI, HDMI, by God almighty, HDMI

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by benjesuit 09/25/07

HP has had it on their notebooks for 1 year now. Come on Dell! What's it going to take to put in an HDMI port? Most of the new LCD TV's today input HDMI.

And I'm surprised that the new XPS 1730 has no HDMI port. DVI is so yesterday and is not forward thinking at all.

Your next generation Montevina based models MUST have HDMI.

And yes, this is a dupe. A dupe of my own post even. But I want to buy a Dell. But without HDMI, it makes it difficult. 30 Comments »

DVI or HDMI out on all laptops models?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by tommarnk 07/06/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

this would be a big jump, if dell add "DVI out" on all dell laptops, so people can connect to there LCD Displays or LCD HDTVs natively

the picture quality will be grealy improved

this should be easy to do as most of new chipsets has dvi out

not many laptop manufacturers add "dvi out" to there lower end products, so it might be a wise move to do so

all LCD monitors and lcd hdtvs has dvi or hdmi in so it might work well

and meybe remove the old VGA out and put a singel DVI-I, it can be used as analog (VGA) to, by using VGA-to-DVI-I adapter like tose used on

standard computer graphic cards for years now

many people like me connect monitor via dvi or hdmi to get the best picture and color quality

The offerings for the XPS M1730: Dual-link DVI-I (support for 30-inch displays) and HDMI via DVI adapter. Check out all the specs for the new systems.

I would like to see all Inspiron laptops have HDMI connectors standard, or at a minimum make it an option on the 17" screen version. 3 Comments »

DVI for Notebooks

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by dellmanfred 02/20/07

I cannot understand why we still have to be punished with these vga plugs build into notebooks. Who's actually buying a CRT monitor these days so that he/she would need a vga plug?!?!
On top of that it must be cheaper too to have a straight digital ouptut without a D/A converter. So please, get rid of the vga plug and put a proper DVI plug into your notebooks. For the sake of our eyes!!!! 10 Comments »

Make External Video DVI

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by rockettech 05/03/07

Simply put, delete the VGA external video on all but bare-bones models and use DVI for external video. DVI can always be adapted to VGA, but not vice-versa. DVI can also be used to breakout to composite and component video. There is alot more flexibility with a DVI connector. And don't you dare use a proprietary connector on the notebook that requires an adapter, like the Apple iBooks and MacBooks. 15 Comments »

Upgradeable Laptops

Laptops submitted by jas68 03/01/07

As the top seller of laptops, I'd like to see Dell (and every other major manufacturer) work on making laptops that are fully upgradeable, or at least as upgradeable as possible. This would include motherboards, audio boards, and even LCD displays. I know that integrated components are common, but it's just a crying shame that when your laptop becomes dated, you have to scrap the whole thing in order to just get an updated CPU and chipset. 2 Comments »

Expandable Graphic card for notebooks

Gaming, Laptops submitted by mav3r1k 04/02/07

Why not sell compatible graphic card for notebooks?
I mean, make a certain notebook can have installed two or three models of MXM graphic card, say which ones are compatible with that slot and sell them, so I can upgrade my dell notebook later with a new graphic card. 1 Comment »

True MXM modules in Notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bobwalt 05/17/07

It would be a real plus if Dell's XPS series notebooks used true MXM graphics modules. This is similar to what Alienware already does. It would not be hard to go from a proprietary cartridge like is currently used to a true MXM module. This would allow much greater leeway in customizing and allow the end user to further upgrade the performance.

Next it would also be a good thing to include a second hard drive connection; there is adequate room inside the chassis. Alternately it could be added as an external SATA. unit. Note neither USB nor Firewire is adequate for game performance.

3rd and last - this one is a bit more radical. It would be very handy if the lcd screen could be turned over when the unit is closed. The unit could then be used for DVD playback unit without being kept open.

increase Graphics Card choice on notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by chanux 02/21/07

Now that notebooks become the favourite buyer's choice, i think it should be possible to have a greater choice on which graphics card we want.

Some technology like MXM or AXIOM or others should allow to have a large number of combination between notebook and graphics card model.

(that's the reason why my last notebook is not a dell)

MXM With Dells

Gaming, Laptops submitted by tolkan 07/19/07

Dell Should use the MXM Universal Laptop GPU Connector on its laptops. By Having this we can upgrade our laptops so it will be future proof.

Example:

1) System with 8400M GS is ok for gaming now, but next year its will lagg behind with DX10 games.

2) You then buy a MXM GPU such as a 860M GT upgrade then replace it as just like a Desktop GPU. Simply pop out the old card and replace with the upgrade.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------...

Obviously there are limitations, due to the size of the cards and the heat generated by the GPUs.

Laptops MXM technology to make a graphic card interchangeable directly by the customer with other mobile GPU available on the market or provided by DELL at a cheap price

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by best_laptops 03/02/07

The MXM technology I think is a very good idea at least for the more expensive laptop systems as a DELL XPS M1710 but also as the Inspiron 9400...

But mainly, I recommend my preferred laptops Builder to continue of being the creator of the Fastest Notebook available on the planet because it's very important for the image of the DELL brand in any laptop market...

(..The XPS M1710 with the Intel T7600G cpu is the "FERRARI of the notebooks" !! :) Congratulations Mr Michael DELL and to all the people who work on that XPS project... I'd just like to advise you to do more efforts about the Thermal Design/materials and, of course, to implement RAID technology in the next SantaRosa models...

Please CONTINUE in this way !!! You are GREAT, THE BEST !! THANKS !!!

P.s.: Do you know I can't buy my DELL XPS M1710 from DELL Italy ?? It's not available.. I'm waiting for my XPS M1710 from April 2006 !!! 4 Comments »

Fully Upgradeable Laptop

Laptops submitted by badblood 05/19/07

Produce a Laptop where everything can be upgraded. Asus is doing it - and here it is:

You name it: Processor, LCD, hard drive, memory, graphics card, optical drive -- take the old one out and put a new component it, all within minutes. The notebook is designed around the core principle of it being easy to upgrade.

Maybe you already have a flexible computer like this one? 9 Comments »

Start offering DELL products to the general public in Poland

Dell, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by lukasz.wisniewski 11/12/07

According to today's local newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza [1], by 20th November, 11:30 to be more exact, Dell will just have manufactured their first notebook in Lodz, Poland. Unfortunately, even though I am inhabitant of this city, it is more than unlikely I will buy DELL notebook anytime soon.

Firstly, the current policy of your company in Poland is "Only for enterprises and institutions" (original in Polish: Tylko dla firm i instytucji). Such a approach seems to me to be more than just bizarre. Do you happen to realize Poland is something like 38 milions of your potential customers? Just for instance, in my city, there are two big public universities, several private ones - you see the universities but not the students. Is this of your concern? I guess not but Apple is already there offering discounts for students.

Secondly, start distributing preinstalled Ubuntu for Poland as well. I actually do not see the point why you do this in UK, Germany or France and not in Poland. People of Poland are more eager to install open-source products, just let me remind you that according to XiTi monitor [2] open-source Firefox browser has market share of 39.6% in Poland, whereas in Germany - 38%, France - 23.9% and UK just 18.7%.

Thirdly, by preinstalling Ubuntu I mean making it an option anywhere where there is an OS selection option on your website. I clearly see no reason in the world why you keep offering such a miserable Ubuntu notebook in Europe instead of something more powerful - Inspiron 6400n with Intel T2130 processor. In your opinion, how impressive is that nowadays?

Last but not least, DELL, please stop participating in this devoid of good sense campaign "Dell recommends Vista..." which is sarcastic. You really do not have to put down this sentence on your website as in Poland you force people to use Vista leaving no other choice.

Take all these remarks under your consideration unless it is OK with you that Poles should travel to Germany in order to buy your notebooks. Hear our voice, DELL!

Organize the sales pages by need, not product line

Dell Web Site submitted by sernovitz 02/03/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The Dell shopping experience is all about Dell -- not the user. Currently, you have to walk through each product line, narrow by model, etc.

This isn't very useful to my mom, or anyone new to Dell. Even the latitude/inspiron choice is never explained.

Start with features -- walk the user through the choices until they get the perfect PC.

What size do you want? What are you going to do with it? Etc.
