Laptop as a portable KVM

Laptops submitted by akili 06/20/07

Many times I have wished I could use a laptop as a troubleshooting device for a server or any other headless PC - using the VGA port on the laptop to use just the LCD portion as the display.

In this suggestion, I'd like to go a step farther - include two way USB or PS/2 interfaces, so a laptop can literally be used as a portable troubleshooting tool, allowing the internal mouse and keyboard to be used to control the remote system.

If such a mode could be enabled without having to shut down the current OS the system is running, such as by putting it into some sort of sleep mode first, all the better.

I think this would be quite valued by technicians and administrators, based upon past commentary I've seen lamenting the lack of this feature even in modern notebooks. 17 Comments »

Keyboards Upfront for Notebooks / Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by samsonik 11/08/07

Before the arrival of Windows 3.1 all laptops had the keyboard upfront which was easy to use !

Shortly after the deployement of 3.1 everyone put the keyboard at the back and the touchpas upfront.

At the end of the day professional IT people use conveniently a mouse.

But in any case scenario, the keyboard at the front of the PC was MUCH MUCH EASIER to use.

Could we come back to the keyboard logically at the front of the laptop, with the mouse pad behind, as a backup in case the mouse is out of order !

Match OS to target market in Advertising

Advertising and Marketing, Small Business submitted by jameslgb 11/08/07

Dell's advertising in their print Marketing Materials should match their target market. If you are mailing a Small Medium Business a brochure every month that advertises solutions for small and medium business then the Microsoft Windows Operating System advertised with every computer should be at a minimum Microsoft Windows Business not home or home basic. The current practice of using the lowest priced software on each machine marketed to a business is misleading. I am a running a business I need business level software not an entertainment package. 2 Comments »

Local Production and Distribution Centers

Advertising and Marketing, Dell submitted by aikiwolfie 11/08/07

Dell could speed up the delivery of Dell systems to consumers by localizing production in places where there is high demand for Dell products.

For example I live near Glasgow in Scotland but all my Dell products seem to be shipped over from Ireland. Even though I can get to Ireland my self in a few hours it can take a month for Dell to build my system and ship it out.

Glasgow is a decent sized city with rail and road links to the rest of Scotland and a skilled workforce in need of jobs. Dell is a company with many customers in Scotland. It would seem to make sense to place manufacturing and distribution facilities where customers are.

As a plus point Glasgow's industrial areas are all fairly close to the city, major transport routes and retail parks. The distribution center could double as a factory outlet or a Dell store. 55 Comments »

Change the Point system AND Cycling of ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by dwood 11/08/07

Okay, the whole thing where a vote is worth less every day and doesn't stop going down after 1 is annoying me. It seems like a way to slowly get rid of the ideas dell doesn't like. (aka just leave it alone long enough and no one will find it)

Instead of using something like the whole decaying votes, why dont they just create a scroller that automatically scrolls through ideas in a particular category selected by the user.

Then let that user find ideas that fit two or more categories. This should be at the front page of the ideastorm site. (added: For those who have not logged in too)
they should also have the following categories by points so users can easily find ideas they might like or might not:
Those -100 through -1
0-100
101-200
201-400
401-800
801-1200
1201-3000
3001-20000
20000-50000
50001+
Have a filter where I can filter through the most voted on in the past:
Hour
12 hours
Day
3 Days
Week
2 Weeks
Month
2 Months
4 Months
6 Months
Year+
Popular should be those who have the best time up and votes ratio . say. Idea xy has been on the popular page for 4 months and has gotten 6000 points, but voting and commenting on it has stopped for a month. it should be time for that idea to move to an idea to an Archive of most popular ideas where we can see notes on it from Dell reps themselves and explanations why that idea was or was not implemented. Then we get to re-vote after we see Dell's explanation, agreeing or disagreeing with them in an archives section.

Another edit: Whether or not they take off the decaying votes, ideas that spark controversy and/or lots of comments should get points.
This is where comment voting comes into play: If a comment gets voted up or down, that changes the overall point amount of the idea.
A comment that gets set as a *negative* comment by the poster changes the overall points of an idea, lets say a comment voted up or down by the said user changes teh idea by an increment of three. as the person gets more comments in an idea, the less his *negative* or *positive* comments are worth.

Whats next: The selection of positive or negative comments (like/dislike/constructive) (positive/negative\neutral) are hidden from other users viewing the idea. All they do is affect the idea a bit more. and as a person gets more comments per time, eventually they wont change the amount of points of that idea. By default, if a person does not select a stading of positive/negative, then its neutral, and does not affect the amount of points that user's comments affect an idea.
Then other users can vote on comments. (NOT neutral comments) changing how much that comment can affect the idea (no more than X and no less than -X) now, whether a comment was voted up by other users affects that user's points N amount (no more than V amount and no less than V amount)
V amount is selected by the user in his profile how much he (or she) wants votes of other people on his/her non-neutral comments to affect their over-all points.

<- Sorry I got a little long-winded there. Tell me if I left any open ends please

Comment please so I can refine it and make it better. 26 Comments »

New Web2.0 mindset and technologies: IT should be pushed to change employees ways of doing things

The other day, someone at my riends' company, wanted to collect data from employees on whether they are coming to an evening event, and how many folks they will be bringing etc. And this person asked hundreds of employees to email her, instead of putting up a collaborative Excel sheet on Sharepoint, or Wiki, and asking everyone to update that, which would reduce her email burden and increase her productivity. so, such new ways of doing things should be encouraged 4 Comments »

Proposed changes for the Dell.com site

Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 11/08/07

Today there was a posting on Direct2Dell that the new home page has been tabled as it was found to be more confusing to the customer based on beta testing.

http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/11/08/32993.aspx

Here is a comment I just submitted there and wanted to get you opinions on. It is much easier to get a conversation going here without the moderation so here we go...

Laura,
Sorry to hear that the new home page didn’t pass beta as it was a nice enhancement if you ask me. Perhaps this would be a good time to bring an issue back up for debate that has been asked for many times on IdeaStorm.
Here are a few links to ideas that should be considered:
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/74790 Organize sales pages by need.
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/61742/ONE_SHOPPING_CART_PLEASE_dellcom
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/61894 6 major issues to be fixed by Dell(see item 5).

SECTION 1 - main page by need no longer use separate sites.

Overall I think people are confused by the multiple sites they have to access to find the system they want. I can understand having specialized systems for different applications but sometimes these systems appeal to more than just your target audience. The current set up has the same systems on different sites at different prices which forces a savvy customer to configure the system several times to find the best deal from your company. The problem isn’t with the home page as much as it is with the entire Dell.com site. A customer wants to go to the home page and find simple choices: Notebook, Desktop, Servers, Electronics, Support and Dell community. When you click on a choice (Notebook) a new page explaining the difference between the models should appear. Inspiron, XPS, Vostro, Latitude and Precision would all be available via one site so the customer can choose which is the correct choice based on their needs, wants and financial constraints. There would be no need to configure several times to find the best price as there would only be one site, one price.

SECTION 2 - Better help me choose sections

Another issue that customers have with the Dell.com site and computer shopping in general is finding help making a choice between configurations. Finding a knowledgeable salesperson is hard enough in a brick and mortar store and it doesn’t exist online. People want to be able to click on the help me choose buttons and find the information they are looking for but that currently isn’t happening on the Dell site. If you look at the XPS M1330 sound options and click the help me choose button it discusses regular sound vs software based upgrades vs DESKTOP sound. How does knowing about desktop sound options help me choose the correct option on a notebook? The ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi® Xtreme Audio Sound Card option does not explain if it powers the internal speakers or if I have to use headphones. I would have to go off the Dell website to do research to find out that it is a plug in and would not fit my needs. The help me sections need to be based on the product you are looking at instead of being a cut n paste thing. I have also noticed the same issues when looking at notebook displays and being fed information on desktop monitors instead. This can be frustrating to a customer and reflects poorly on the company.

IN CLOSING

I look forward to improvements to the Dell.com site and wish you good luck with the holiday shopping season. I have also posted most of these comments into a new idea to get the reaction of the community.

UPDATED: to add sections to help those who don't want to read so much. :) 8 Comments »

New holiday commercials with the Dell dude!! (forgiveness and second chances)

Dell submitted by jervis961 11/08/07

"Oh, how the mighty have fallen: Ben Curtis, famous just a few years ago as "Steven the Dell Dude," is now a waiter / bartender at Tortilla Flats in New York. Although the Steven ads were hugely popular and generated tons of buzz (and revenue) for Dell, the company eventually dropped the campaign after Ben got arrested for buying pot in 2003 -- shocking no one who actually watched the commercials, but apparently not the message Dell wanted to send the parents fronting the cash for all those

http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/08/dude-youre-getting-a-drink-dell-dude-now-a...

Here's the idea.

A new commercial series staring our older Dell dude but not the conventional type that Dell usually does. Have him at home explaining to a friend that he needs a new computer. His buddy can say something like "you aren't thinking about buying from THEM are you?". Then just end the commercial without even mentioning Dell.

Not actually mentioning Dell will get more people to talk about it out of speculation. Is it a Dell commercial? Is the Dell Dude working for HP?

A new commercial could come out a few weeks later to continue the story of him reconnecting with Dell. It would be a good holiday thing about forgiveness for past mistakes and getting a second chance. Not only does this apply to the Dell Dude but to Dell itself. 20 Comments »

Online Case History

Service and Support submitted by mrdrum18 11/08/07

Currently on support.dell.com you have the ability to put in your part dispatch number and see the tracking number if it shipped.

Dell really needs to expand on the idea of an "Online Case History". Many times this part dispatch lookup service does'nt even work and even if if does work it is limited ONLY to looking up your specific part dispatch. We as customers should be able to login to a support portal; within this portal it should list all of our systems and within each system should list all of our case history including open cases. We should be able to see the whereabouts of our case online; are we waiting on a supervisors call? If so, what time is that call? Is customer care still reasearching our issue? If so, when will they get back to us? Dell could even (I dont know how feasible this is) to allow us to actually read case notes to ensure we are up to speed on whats going on.

Its a no-brainer that we should be able to log into our support portal and be able to to see in an organized way our entire case histories. We shouldnt have to call in and waste ours and dell's time and money just to find out the shipping number or estimated ship date of our part. We should be able to have a reliable source online to see that. We shouldnt have to call in every hour wondering when our call back will be. We should be able to see that online.

No company has ever done this before but I cant imagine why Dell wouldnt want to implement this. We should be able to see OUR case histories. 2 Comments »

Offer Kubuntu as pre-install choice - as interface easier for customers familiar with Windows

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by dspain 11/09/07

Offer Kubuntu (http://www.kubuntu.org/) as pre-install choice on new Linux Dells, in addition to Ubuntu choice. It would make sense to offer Kubuntu version of Ubuntu to most people as the KDE desktop interface, as well as being easy to use, is a much easier transition for Windows users (I can attest to this being a long-term windows user myself). I find Kubuntu very intuitive and it is running faultlessly on my Dell Dimension 8400 (dual boot with Windows XP which I will probably ditch soon). I have spoken to a number of other people and many are moving towards the Kubuntu version – also loading Firefox as web browser and Thunderbird as mail client. 10 Comments »

Less plastic please on the XPS M1330 and other things

XPS products submitted by rach 11/09/07

I bought an XPS M1330 and got it delivered in September. My computer is 2 months old and now the painted silver parts around the frame are starting to discolour and showing black underneath it. I am not happy about this. I would like to see more magnesium on the next XPS 13.3 inch please. I would like to see an AL keyboard like on the Apple MacBook Pro.

Also while i am here lol if Dell could allow us to fully utilise the 256 of dedicated VRAM that the 8400GS card allows i would appreciate this as well. The Sony SZ offers a 64MB dedicated card and hybrid graphics. By offering more dedicated VRAM on the XPS products would be one way as well to help differentiate the XPS M1330 from such competitiors.

I would also like to see Dell offering 64 bit Vista/XP on the Dell XPS M1330. Right now users have to try and install this themselves if they want to fully utilise 4GB of ram.

I would also to see higher capacity 6 cell batteries as well. It seems to me that these Dell 6 cell batteries degrade to fast so i would like Dell to address this as well.

I also wouldn't mind to see swithcable graphics on the next XPS M1330 also.

Apart from that i am really happy. 1 Comment »

Sell the Vostro line @ Staples.

Sales Strategies, Small Business, Vostro products submitted by benjesuit 11/09/07

I was in staples today and noticed that the Inspirons with AMD processors were on display. Nice units BTW. Much nicer than what you see in the pictures online.

Staples is a business supply store. It would seem appropriate to sell Vostro's there also. Staples can handle the warranty repair issues the same way they purport to handle the Inspiron issues. 2 Comments »

IdeaStorm: Take a look at other sites with similar features to see what is needed to be added to this site to make it 2007 functional.

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 11/09/07

Dell quit thinking in side the smallest web box on the internet, all the issues with the IdeaStorm site have been done before too many times for SalesForce.com to think these features are new or not required by a website on the internet, maybe in their in house testing its fine but come on this is the internet! First I had to force you to add e-mail address verification so not any one could dupe the system and create an account if not as many as they wanted with any name they could come up with, but now, well actually we've been insinuating this for months but the whole thread display issue is now showing nothing was ever thought out with this site (or software).

In this idea we'll list sites which have done it before and have it down so the programmers can recreate these age old features which are required for any real world website such as IdeaStorm.

This really begs to ask exactly how much are you paying SalesForce for this pile and who thought it was the correct software!

Copied davmcn's idea here for fear it will be removed soon and its the origin of this one so here it is:

Those Pages with lots of comment with the next page thing is annoying!

100 points posted to by davmcn

you guys always complain about not solution so here's one REALLY simple one...

Dell holds continued responsibility for the functioning of embedded O.S.

submitted by preciousone11 11/09/07

To make a Dell Computer attractive to the average consumer, Dell embeds the latest Operating System in their computers, laptops and notebooks. Saving its customers hundreds of dollars. We Thank, Dell. Yet, when problems arise, the customer service component recommends the Software department, which is a paid department. If the customer persues Microsoft, Microsoft recommends the embedded manufacturer, sending the customer back to Dell.
Customer Loyalty is developed through the reliable, dependable, and accountable behavior of the retail company. If Dell is going to embed products by other companies, Dell's technical advisor must know the mechanics of these products and services. Never send your customer to another manufacturer. Any additional cost for services to embedded products, should be made know immediately, but never the full cost to your customer who only have or is allowed part of or a fraction of product functionality. Microsoft builds it Customer's Loyalty daily, while Dell sends Microsoft its share of loyal customers.
I personally love Dell products and was elated when Dell began to support itself. It took Dell long enough to support its computers directly with it New Tuneup Services. I waited Two years for Dell to support and protect Dell computers.
If my Dell computer has a problem, any type of problem, Dell Tuneup should .locate the problem whether the problem is hardware, the operating systems or software. A consumer problems end immediately, once the Tuneup is activated and implemented. Yet, this is not the case. Dell's Automatic Tuneup cannot Identify All issues. This is disappointing to Dell consumers. My Idea I will pass on to the Dell corporation is stand by your machine; the Dell computer is the Best Constructed computer on the market, but that is not reason to become laxidasical in the maintanence area. A Tuneup and Diagnostic service for its Own machine must render accurate diagnostics. That Dell have built a better machine, consumers won't beat a path to Dell's door if Dell don't understand its own specifications. 2 Comments »
