Dell should stop lying about preinstalled Linux Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by beer28 02/25/07
Linux has been an option for corporate machines for 7 years now. NOTHING HAS changed. Quit lying Dell. The requests were for pre-installed openSuSE, Ubuntu and Fedora Core on Inspirons and other retail grade machines, not bulk purchased corporate class computers. We are not idiots and we can read through the lies. Linux, Service and Support submitted by bradleydsmith 02/23/07 If Dell was to offer Linux pre-installed, I think they should offer support for Linux itself instead of passing the tickets to Ubuntu,RedHat or Novell. They could have a American based call center. By doing this Dell could make hardware vendors take notice and produce better drivers. If Dell is having trouble filling slots for Linux developers or techs they can call me, I would love to help them out:) 4 Comments » IdeaStorm submitted by storm 02/25/07
Dell's recent Ideas in Action (Pre-Installed Linux Options) can be summarized with three phrases from the press release: Novell?? OH NO!!! Test the OSS community waters! Dell, Linux submitted by phubert 02/26/07
Dell finally posted a response to the input at this site but this statement: "as a result, we are working with Novell to certify our corporate client products for Linux," is unlikely to encourage many Linux users, given Novell's recent, highly controversial, arrangement with Microsoft, seen by many as only undermining Linux/OSS by creating unnecessary doubts about users rights TO Linux. Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by speedy 02/24/07 Novell, in partnership with Microsoft, attempt to the free development of Linux. If my favorite PCs producer, Dell, preinstall openSUSE or other software on their PCs I don't want to buy anything anymore. We must boycott Novell if we like Linux. 13 Comments » Linux submitted by derekj61 02/27/07 Novell Linux ?!?!? Don't you get it, we want to have unincumbered Linux on the boxes, Debian, Slackware, Redhat, even Ubuntu or Linspire. Not a Microsoft product. The next thing we know the widget that we develop on our shiney Microsoft/Novell Linux box is owned by Microsoft. 6 Comments » Broadband and Mobility, New Product Ideas submitted by badblood 04/18/07
Mobility redefined! Flybook is a go-anywhere, do-everything computer. It’s as powerful as a desktop or a heavyweight laptop PC and as handy as a mobile phone. At a tiny 235 x 155 x 31mm, it’s crammed with the latest multimedia and telecommunications technology. Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by bbacoyiannis 04/18/07
I think its time we move to the year 2007, make mandatory good graphics cards, no more integrated graphics cards. The amount of times of friends and families who have bought a low end system, only to complain and find out after the fact their games will not work due to the intergrated video card. They will then go out and buy a proper video card, spend the extra money and time to upgrade for a new machines. Provide Drivers For Linux/Unix Involving All Hardware Used - With Source Code Linux, Operating Systems submitted by longjohn254 04/18/07
Providing a set of binary drivers for linux distributions is all well and good but, if there are major changes in the Operating System it can break the operation of the drivers on the computer. The Linux distribution should never be an issue if all the hardware is supported by the Linux Kernel, the same would go for most of the other UNIX like systems supported by the x86 and x86_64 architectures. Dell should follow Apple and Sun's lead by using open source to promote innovation. 4 Comments » Service and Support submitted by cosh 04/14/07
"Is there anybody there?" said the Traveller, After posting an idea; And his screen in the silence, echoed neglect, For no action would appear: A forgotten promise from the moderator, Was little to be read And he stormed his idea a second time; 'Is there anybody there?' he said. But no one ascended to the website; No head from distant support Leaned over and took up the keyboard, To update the action report. But still a cohort of heroes That remained in the derelict then Stood resolute in their conviction For action- how much? and when? Stood listening to the cries of despair, For customer support and software, With freedom from vendor lock-in, And licenses unfair. The Traveller felt in his heart the indifference, Of Dell to the World's request, For Linux, lit keyboards, and webcams That would set Dell out from the rest. For he suddenly smote on the keyboard, even Louder, and turned on caps:- 'TELL THEM I CAME, AND NO ONE ANSWERED, THAT I KEPT MY WORD', he said. Never the least stir made the moderators, Though every idea he wrote, Went to the heart of the people, As they rushed to demote or promote: Ay, Dell saw the excite on the website, And made token talk of work still to come, But other retailers watched closer, And soon had everything done. The original is here. Some lines of it I didn't modify at all. Turned out Walter De La Mare had amazing forsight to predict in 1912 what would be happening on Dell Ideastorm 95 years later. If you read the comments there's lots more that people have added too. 33 Comments »

Everytime I have even a question that isn't in their standard script, sales & support refer me to call customer support. What's the point? It's antagonizing. IdeaStorm submitted by doesdellcare 04/13/07
It's starting to look like Dell just wanted to use IdeaStorm as part of a game with Microsoft -- perhaps begging Microsoft for additional Vista co-marketing dollars and sales bonuses. The "ideas in action" tab on the home page of IdeaStorm.com and the "Direct2Dell" blog where they suggested we'd see IdeaStorm results both show discussion of low-ranked "ideas" that ar "in action" but nothing but vague evasive answers on the most popular requests. A while back Dell joined up with Second Life to produce a couple of badly textured islands to sell computers on and try to get people to socialize. I think it has failed. Nobody visits Dell In Second Life. Service and Support submitted by dcndn 04/12/07
Despite boards like this and the Direct2Dell blog, the day-to-day customer service experience continues to deteriorate. By shoehorning customers into a preset rubric of customer options, making it difficult to reach a human operator, staffing call centers with individuals who are unable to help customers, and encouraging their customer support representatives to pass-the-buck, Dell's customer service system is resulting in the loss of customers and embarrassment to the company. Take our ideas to Dell's 800 number - noone listens to us here. IdeaStorm, Service and Support submitted by doesdellcare 04/13/07
