Dell should stop lying about preinstalled Linux

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by beer28 02/25/07

Linux has been an option for corporate machines for 7 years now. NOTHING HAS changed. Quit lying Dell. The requests were for pre-installed openSuSE, Ubuntu and Fedora Core on Inspirons and other retail grade machines, not bulk purchased corporate class computers. We are not idiots and we can read through the lies.

I will never purchase from Dell again. If not for anything else, because they insult their own customers' intelligence.

"Pre-Installed Linux Options
We are listening, and as a result, we are working with Novell to certify our corporate client products for Linux, including our OptiPlex desktops, Latitude notebooks and Dell Precision workstations. This is another step towards ensuring that our customers have a good experience with Linux on our systems." 11 Comments »

Larger Linux Call Center

Linux, Service and Support submitted by bradleydsmith 02/23/07

If Dell was to offer Linux pre-installed, I think they should offer support for Linux itself instead of passing the tickets to Ubuntu,RedHat or Novell. They could have a American based call center. By doing this Dell could make hardware vendors take notice and produce better drivers. If Dell is having trouble filling slots for Linux developers or techs they can call me, I would love to help them out:) 4 Comments »

Novell?? OH NO!!! Test the OSS community waters!

Dell, Linux submitted by phubert 02/26/07

Dell finally posted a response to the input at this site but this statement: "as a result, we are working with Novell to certify our corporate client products for Linux," is unlikely to encourage many Linux users, given Novell's recent, highly controversial, arrangement with Microsoft, seen by many as only undermining Linux/OSS by creating unnecessary doubts about users rights TO Linux.

In the following paragraph, Dell provides this: "In addition to working with Novell, we are also working with other distributors and evaluating the possibility of additional certifications across our product line. We are continuing to investigate your other Linux-related ideas, so please continue to check here for updates.", which is somewhat more hopeful, at least.

I would hope Dell would consider community concerns, while identifying the unique needs of home/home office users (which is where Linspire/Ubuntu and the Crossover Office product come in).

Good luck Dell... to us all.

If you respond well, customers will respond also to you. But I also understand you face risks in any of the directions you choose to follow. Choose well.

A ban for Novell on my Dell

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by speedy 02/24/07

Novell, in partnership with Microsoft, attempt to the free development of Linux. If my favorite PCs producer, Dell, preinstall openSUSE or other software on their PCs I don't want to buy anything anymore. We must boycott Novell if we like Linux. 13 Comments »

Not Novell Linux

Linux submitted by derekj61 02/27/07

Novell Linux ?!?!? Don't you get it, we want to have unincumbered Linux on the boxes, Debian, Slackware, Redhat, even Ubuntu or Linspire. Not a Microsoft product. The next thing we know the widget that we develop on our shiney Microsoft/Novell Linux box is owned by Microsoft. 6 Comments »

Flybook

Broadband and Mobility, New Product Ideas submitted by badblood 04/18/07

Mobility redefined! Flybook is a go-anywhere, do-everything computer. It’s as powerful as a desktop or a heavyweight laptop PC and as handy as a mobile phone. At a tiny 235 x 155 x 31mm, it’s crammed with the latest multimedia and telecommunications technology.

It is the best compromise between the UMPC form, a tablet PC and fully functional PC.

Dell buy Flybook or make a computer just like it!

No mroe integrated Video Card

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by bbacoyiannis 04/18/07

I think its time we move to the year 2007, make mandatory good graphics cards, no more integrated graphics cards. The amount of times of friends and families who have bought a low end system, only to complain and find out after the fact their games will not work due to the intergrated video card. They will then go out and buy a proper video card, spend the extra money and time to upgrade for a new machines.

Either place a sticker that will say not recomended for gamming or just put a decent video card into the box. 10 Comments »

Provide Drivers For Linux/Unix Involving All Hardware Used - With Source Code

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by longjohn254 04/18/07

Providing a set of binary drivers for linux distributions is all well and good but, if there are major changes in the Operating System it can break the operation of the drivers on the computer.

However if the community had access to the source code for all the drivers then they can provide support for this hardware out of the box and keep it in line with the current core component updates. It can include TV tuner cards such as "Avermedia Hybrid TV+FM PCI (A16AR)".

In addition these drivers need to be able to be downloaded and installed with ease as some people may not be used to messing around with setting up linux drivers. Especially important with both binary versions & source code versions. 3 Comments »

Dell OS Options

Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by kholz 04/16/07

I think Dell should build it's Desktops/Notebooks that are fully compatible with the Linux Kernel, Solaris Kernel and any of the *BSD Kernels. The Linux distribution should never be an issue if all the hardware is supported by the Linux Kernel, the same would go for most of the other UNIX like systems supported by the x86 and x86_64 architectures. Dell should follow Apple and Sun's lead by using open source to promote innovation. 4 Comments »

Dell should read poetry

Service and Support submitted by cosh 04/14/07

"Is there anybody there?" said the Traveller,
After posting an idea;
And his screen in the silence, echoed neglect,
For no action would appear:

A forgotten promise from the moderator,
Was little to be read
And he stormed his idea a second time;
'Is there anybody there?' he said.

But no one ascended to the website;
No head from distant support
Leaned over and took up the keyboard,
To update the action report.

But still a cohort of heroes
That remained in the derelict then
Stood resolute in their conviction
For action- how much? and when?

Stood listening to the cries of despair,
For customer support and software,
With freedom from vendor lock-in,
And licenses unfair.

The Traveller felt in his heart the indifference,
Of Dell to the World's request,
For Linux, lit keyboards, and webcams
That would set Dell out from the rest.

For he suddenly smote on the keyboard, even
Louder, and turned on caps:-
'TELL THEM I CAME, AND NO ONE ANSWERED,
THAT I KEPT MY WORD', he said.

Never the least stir made the moderators,
Though every idea he wrote,
Went to the heart of the people,
As they rushed to demote or promote:

Ay, Dell saw the excite on the website,
And made token talk of work still to come,
But other retailers watched closer,
And soon had everything done.

The original is here. Some lines of it I didn't modify at all. Turned out Walter De La Mare had amazing forsight to predict in 1912 what would be happening on Dell Ideastorm 95 years later. If you read the comments there's lots more that people have added too.

Sponser the Linux Indy 500 car

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by steveoc 04/15/07

www.tux500.com - An Indy car team with Linux splashed all over it - its a goer !!

From :
http://blog.lobby4linux.com/archives/138-Indy,-We-Have-A-Driver.-Chastain-Mot...< Chastain, a legend in the Indianapolis Racing Realm and the owner of Chastain Motorsports has announced his team's entrance in this year's Indy 500. And if we've got anything to do with it...as long as I have one struggling breathe left inside of me, that monster of a race car will have Linux splashed all over it when the flag drops. It will be the first time in history that Linux has been an active participant of the now-famous cry.

"Gentlemen, Start your engines"!"

There are 36 days (??) left till the Tux racer gets its first race. This would be awesome timing for Dell to announce general availability of it's Linux offerings, and BUY some prominent naming rights on the vehicle before everyone else jumps in.

Its a pretty amazing achievement that this insane race car idea has got off the ground :) Comment »

Give Chat Sales/Support some authority...

Service and Support submitted by giorgiog 04/14/07

Everytime I have even a question that isn't in their standard script, sales & support refer me to call customer support. What's the point? It's antagonizing.

Give these folks some authority or get rid of the chat option altogether. Comment »

Does Dell read IdeaStorm anymore -- we ideastorm users can find out -- what happens to this posting will tell us.

IdeaStorm submitted by doesdellcare 04/13/07

It's starting to look like Dell just wanted to use IdeaStorm as part of a game with Microsoft -- perhaps begging Microsoft for additional Vista co-marketing dollars and sales bonuses. The "ideas in action" tab on the home page of IdeaStorm.com and the "Direct2Dell" blog where they suggested we'd see IdeaStorm results both show discussion of low-ranked "ideas" that ar "in action" but nothing but vague evasive answers on the most popular requests.

Note it's not hard for them to meet the top requests. For example, all the Linux requests - Dell *already* sells Linux laptops and desktops -- just not priced in dollars.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/03/21/HNdelllowcostpcchina_1.html
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/01/09/dell_linux_china/
On their Ideas In Action page they even observed that "hardware support for Linux is as important as the distribution(s) offered." -- so why not just sell the Chinese language SKU they already have here. Customers here can then change language settings or re-install themselves and at least they'll have a computer that they knew some Linux worked with.

So in summary I'm
(a) starting to wonder if Dell cares, and
(b) starting to wonder if Dell even comes here anymore.

At least the second part is testable. I'll put a bunch of offensive text here and see if a moderator deletes this posting or bans my account or something - but tweak the words a bit to avoid triggering any automated spam bots they might have. "Dell sure seems to enjoy taking it Up The [offensive word removed at user's request] for Microsoft" "It's especially sad because I like Dell otherwise, but it disgusts me how they help Microsoft [offensive word removed at user's request] Dell customers" “The software buyers at Dell must be a bunch of [offensive phrase removed at user's request]" [i'm told that's a very offensive phrase now]. 'H*ll No we don't want Vista". And I hear goatse links (http://[offensive link removed at user's request]goatse [WARNING: don't click on that, it's really disgusting, but reminds me of Microsoft's business practices]) are good for offending people and getting accounts banned too. Dell, if you do read this, make a comment below and I'll remove the offensive material here -- or just delete this troll-idea and ban this account -- and at least everyone else will see that Dell reads stuff here. Or, better - JUST START SELLING US THE LINUX LAPTOPS - and we'll all know you listened.

Sorry in advance for anyone this offended. If you don't think those were offensive enough feel free to add more offensive material to the comments.

Or vote this up and using the technique described in the long paragraph we can then learn if Dell even reads the highly-voted ideas.

Dell should drop Second Life

Dell Community submitted by captainsensible 04/12/07 **REVIEWED**

A while back Dell joined up with Second Life to produce a couple of badly textured islands to sell computers on and try to get people to socialize. I think it has failed. Nobody visits Dell In Second Life.

#1. BAD graphics
#2. too much rated-R/X material
#3. too many people flying around naked
#4. did I mention BAD graphics?
#5. Nobody manning the Dell news stall or trinket stores.

You can buy a Dell from Second Life, sort of. After clicking around and eventually making it into a drafting table area, you click the table and get the DELL web site. That's about 4000 extra steps to purchase a new Dell system.

More at http://www.dell.com/sl
We feel there is a lot of opportunity with Second Life and continue to learn a lot from being a part of the community.

Fire Dick Hunter

Service and Support submitted by dcndn 04/12/07

Despite boards like this and the Direct2Dell blog, the day-to-day customer service experience continues to deteriorate. By shoehorning customers into a preset rubric of customer options, making it difficult to reach a human operator, staffing call centers with individuals who are unable to help customers, and encouraging their customer support representatives to pass-the-buck, Dell's customer service system is resulting in the loss of customers and embarrassment to the company.

Dick Hunter, Vice President of Customer Experience, has failed to revamp his department, which reaches a new-found nadir of customer satisfaction each day. He and the leadership of the customer experience department should be fired, customer service call centers should be relocated back to the United States, and a "one-call" initiative that encourages line-level CSRs to resolve problems immediately should be started. 8 Comments »

Take our ideas to Dell's 800 number - noone listens to us here.

IdeaStorm, Service and Support submitted by doesdellcare 04/13/07

Short summary:

* Submitting your ideas to 1-800-456-3355 is probably more useful than submitting them here.

Looking at Dell's responses to IdeaStorm here http://direct2dell.com/ , it seems Dell really only cares about Vista. Back in February they said it was "exciting" to see the ideastorm Linux ideas - and yet they still only sell Linux laptops and Desktops in some international markets (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/01/09/dell_linux_china/) I'd be fine having one of those Chinese Linux laptops - because unlike the "Designed for Microsoft" (as the sticker reads) Dells, I know this one's at least capable of running Linux. It's not a technical issue. There's no excuse that simply selling that existing product here would take 3 months.

No one cares what we say here. BUT ... Dell has 1-800 numbers.
So instead of submitting ideas here - we should submit them by phone.

Recommended text for your call:

It was February when Dell said "It’s exciting to see the IdeaStorm community’s interest in open source solutions like Linux and OpenOffice. Your feedback has been all about flexibility and we have seen a consistent request to provide platforms that allow people to install their operating system of choice. We are listening."

Thank you for listening, and even though I can't find it on your hard to navigate web site, I'm sure you must be selling these systems by now.

I'd like to order a Inspiron XXXX with Linux on it. No, I don't care which distro -- the one you already sell in international markets is fine.

Their small business sales number ( 1-800-456-3355 ) is probably the best one to go with - even for home users (you get a better selection of systems there) and for large businesses (small business often has better pricing). More phone #s.
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/byphon...< take notes of the calls and post them here for our entertainment. 11 Comments »

Vista downgrade to XP Professional

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by carlobaluta 04/10/07

Hi,

Considering the fact that Vista is not quite popular yet, and many of your programs won't work with it, many businesses/people prefer XP Pro. However, sometimes Vista is the only choice offered.
Dell could sell a downgrade to XP in such case. I'm sure many will go for it, even if you'd have to throw in a couple of extra bucks.
