Customer appreciation page/discounts for individuals

Sales Strategies submitted by pentox 10/03/07

For individuals who make regular purchases from Dell it would be nice to have an equivalent to the Premier Pages for them. This could include individual specific discounts to encourage regular upgrading of systems and suggested upgrades. A way to make individual customers feel as though their continued purchasing of Dell products is appreciated, even if they aren't buying one a week. Comment »

Preloaded corporate image

Servers and Storage, Small Business, Simplify IT submitted by jmuzic1 02/19/07

When I worked as a lowly help desk lackey, I always dreaded the usual provisioning of a new computer for an employee. I always thought it would be a great idea if Dell would allow customers (mostly corporate customers in this case) upload a system image to the Dell website which would be used in provisioning new systems under specific buying accounts. Instead of loading the hard drive full of stuff that will just be erased by the company, allow Dell to provision the hard drive with a customer-supplied base image that would allow a computer to immediately be placed on a new employee's desk after being unwrapped. 3 Comments »

Refurbished Hardware

Sales Strategies submitted by dwilliam_houston 08/19/07

It would be great if we could order items from the Dell Outlet (Refurbished hardware store) from the Premier page. Sometimes the refurbished equipment meets the needs and the customer is willing to take refurbished hardware over new equipment. 1 Comment »

IdeaStorm feature: Allow us to browse based on the Dell-assigned tags

IdeaStorm submitted by cosh 05/18/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell assign "status tags" to some of the popular/notable ideas on this website, but they are tiny little things under the title of each idea, and there is no way to search or browse by them.

If we had a page on IdeaStorm so we could see ideas based on each status tag it will let everybody see what effect IdeaStorm is having, in addition to the few ideas mentioned under "Ideas in Action". It might also reduce the number of duplicates for very popular ideas, if people can see what Dell has already acknowledged.

The status tags being used at the moment are as follows:

- Acknowledged
- Already Offered
- Coming Soon
- Fixed
- Implemented
- In Progress
- Not Likely
- Not Now
- Under Review (formerly, Under Consideration)
- Partially Implemented

You can see a sample of how this works on my categorizer web site, here. Some of the information may be out of date, but it works for most purposes.

Status tag links have been launched.

No Limits! Make **all** choices available **anywhere** in the world

Sales Strategies submitted by mrw 09/16/07

First example: The Germans are second class customers, because they don't get the same choices for Ubuntu Laptops as in the USA. We here in Switzerland are even third class customers, because we do not get an Ubuntu Laptop at all.

Other example: The choices I can make for a notebook depends on how I walked through your shop! Sometimes for the same Model, I can chose a low end Harddisk, sometimes not. That's absolutely ridiculous! Please allow any possible hardware combination!

Allow to select any matching hard disk in any laptop (or desktop)! Allow to setup any kind of memory, especially e.g. one(!) 2GB module instead of two 1GB modules, give the choice for between either a mirroring display or an anti-glare display for any available display size and resolution. If technically possible, allow to choose between NVidia and ATI, and allow to chose the Memory of the card. Allow to completely deselect the operating system and all kind of installed software.

First: Make all offers available anywhere in the world!

Second: Do not limit the possible combinations!

Shouldn't the customer be king? Let us all choices! 34 Comments »

The most requested feature...

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by xivulon 09/26/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

There are several proposals that basically ask the same thing: SHOW UBUNTU IN THE LIST OF OPERATING SYSTEM ON ALL MACHINES [subtract $50]. And why not, add XP to the list as well. There are also many more proposals that would be made redundant IF the above was implemented. If you add them all together that is probably the most requested feature at the moment. Yes I think many of the ideas below can be merged.

http://www.dellideastorm.com/article/show/67692

...and many more...

Of course not all hardware choices will go down well with Ubuntu, but you have a conflict resolution system in place to notify users that make incompatible choices, and that could easily be extended to address conflicts between hardware and operating system. The only reason not to have Ubuntu is when there are fundamental incompatibilities that cannot be addressed by swapping wireless card or video card (suspend/hibernation...). In this case show "No operating system" (no point in having "No operating system" when a free operating system is available).

So, don't hide Ubuntu in some dark corner of your website only known to geeks, give customers a REAL choice...

Allow Anti-Virus as Optional

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by rgb66rgb 09/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Some purchasers already have subscriptions to anti-virus products that can be ported to new systems. Not having a 'no anti-virus' option on every system order page forces those users to essentially buy two licenses when only one machine will be used.

Make a calendar with all COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas

Advertising and Marketing, IdeaStorm submitted by krasmussen 09/22/07 **REVIEWED**

One of the biggest annoyances with IdeaStorm is that the horizon for an idea being implemented is very blurry, if at all existing. If you're lucky, you get "third quarter 2009", but mostly, there is no timeframe at all. This leads to the feeling that not much is being done, and exactly that feeling is what IdeaStorm should be eliminating.

Therefore, I propose that you make a list or calender with all the COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas with timeframes for all of them. Just a "december 2008" would be nice, or better yet, "deadline 31st november 2008".

I don't know if this is connected with some goal management inside Dell, if it is, maybe you should work on improving that, too?

Today, the best way to know the progress of an idea is through Ideas in Action, our Weekly Update or Dell comments in the thread.

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.

New tv commercial

Advertising and Marketing submitted by sugarbear 10/14/07

I would like to see a new tv commercial with M. Dell in it. Instead of the glamor and glitz, try M. Dell in the family room, feet up on the footstool, playing games on his XPS with the duo 30" screens. He should be intently gaming and then just turn and smile at the camera. Then the screens go to the Dell logo. 6 Comments »

Dell Outlet: Show actual configuraiton information (match main dell.com site)

Dell Web Site, Monitors and Displays submitted by bodean97 10/15/07

It would be nice to see that actual system configuration information in the Dell Outless that is similar to the details when ordering a new system.

This is important espeically with the notebooks since they have a lot of panel and network options. just saying it is a 15.4 or 17 in is not enough. How does a buyer know if it is a wxga, wxga+, wuxga..etc... 5 Comments »

List Power Details when configuring a computer

Desktops, Sales Strategies, Servers and Storage submitted by rotthund 10/15/07

When ponding the power consumptions of a CRT vs LCD display, I saw the Dell confiugation doesn't list a desktop's power supply details, nor it's typical power consumption. Monitor specs list those details. List those details on Dell computers, and show the estimated effect the configuration has on the computer's power details. 5 Comments »

A truly customizable PC?

Desktops, XPS products submitted by ajg77 10/16/07

I would like to get a new media center PC however Dell does not offer any combination that meets my needs. It would be nice if Dell offered some sort of advanced system configuration option where users could spec a computer with any available option. While I understand too many choices can confuse consumers – Dell could create a completely customizable option for individuals who know exactly what they want.

Below are some examples of the issues faced because I cannot design the PC I want on Dell’s web site.

I would like to get a new Media Center PC with cable card support. I would like a WD 10,000RPM Raptor HD as the primary hard drive, however Dell does not offer this drive in a computer with cable card support but they do offer the drive in other models. More importantly I would like to get PC with a WD 10,000RPM Raptor HD as the primary hard drive and two 750GB hard drives in RAID 0 as a secondary hard drives, however Dell does not offer this in a model that also offers cable card support, as the XPS410 is only available with two hard drives and the XPS 720 is not available with cable card support.

I would like an option of at least 3 internal hard drives and thus Dell should increase the amount of available HD bays in its mid level offerings. For example, I own an XPS 400 and it only has 2 HD bays therefore I cannot run my optimum set up for a media center, which would be the OS on a fast drive and my recordings stored on a RAID 0 array. This is preventing me from ordering a XPS 410.

I would like cable card compatibility but I don not want to be “forced” to buy blu-ray.
Right now the only desktop Dell offers with cable card support is the XPS 410, however to get a XPS410 with cable cards you must also purchase a blu-ray drive. Since I already have a stand alone blu-ray player I do not need to spend the extra money for one in my PC however Dell requires this upgrade to get cable card support.

The XPS720 has a sufficient amount of drive bays for my needs but no cable card option. Comment »

Dell separate the ordering process so the customer can skip sections they don't want.

Dell Web Site submitted by jorge 08/25/07

Dell separate the ordering process, currently Dell forces (the home shopper) to go through a lengthy process to get their orders done allow the customer to skip sections they don't want. Separate the ordering process by

1. Hardware (options relating to hardware to be built into the system)
2. Warranty (hardware)
3. OS (this should only affect the remaining steps not the former)
4. OS Support if needed
5. Accessories (printers, usb add on's etc.
6. Software
7. Summary
8. Shipping
9. Financial
10. Paper trail summary printout or e-mail receipt.

At the end of each allow the customer to skip the next, of course Shipping, Financial and Receipt will be required to be processed (no skip option).

Efficiency Dell, this will give you a head start on the rest. 8 Comments »

All possible options should be available via the website

Dell Web Site submitted by steve0073 07/27/07

On the Dell website, many options are not available. But they are available when ordering by phone. For example, the Inspiron 1720 can't be configured with an 7200rpm harddrive, but it can be ordered with such harddrives by phone (yes, I asked).

Now, this is what I don't get:
Every person who wasn't asleep during the last 20 years can tell you that taking orders by phone is much, much more expensive for a company than taking orders via a website. Orders by phone take time, use up expensive human resources. You maybe need to hire more people for this, and the already hired ones are stressed out and don't have the time for real special cases where they would be really needed. And they maybe even forget to call you back because they're just too busy (yes, happened to me twice now).
That adds up to more costs and bad customer service.
If you would allow configuring everything on the website, you would have a lot less people calling your customer service.

So please Dell, provide all the possible options directly on the website so we can order what we want/need much easier and with less stress, and less cost for you. 5 Comments »

Provide More Details on the Outlet Site for Scratch And Dent Items

Dell Web Site submitted by kenjennings 08/29/07

It would be good if the Outlet site could include a more detailed description of a specific product's "scratch-n-dented" condition. How about a photo of the actual item in question? There is a difference between paint rubbed off the corners and a dent indicating an impact occurred.

If you haven't seen the Outlet site, currently, the detailed description of the condition of anything that's Scratch & Dent is, literally, "Scratch & Dent". Not very helpful. 5 Comments »

Always include all software and driver reinstallation discs for free (or at least let us get the option to)... don't make us pay extra

Software submitted by winoffice 05/01/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Always include ALL software AND driver reinstallation discs for FREE (or at let us get the option do get the for free if we want as follows)...don't make us pay extra in case that we have a disaster and need to reinstall from scratch...!

No Discs Included (Included In Price)

All Discs Included (this means everything -- all software discs -- OS/Security software/etc., and all driver discs -- this means Windows or Linux drivers or both, whatever applies -- add $0)

Other options (OS disc only, all software discs only, driver discs only, etc. -- add $0)

For some computers, Dell does not include the reinstallation discs. Even if Dell offers them, Dell charges extra for us to get them. In fact, the only time I seen reinstallation discs being offered without charge were for Dell XPS desktops with the flashy lights -- that is, the Dell XPS 600, 700, and 710 systems, for those ware the only systems to offer operating system options like "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center WITH REINSTALLATION CD".

Also, most of the time when software reinstallation discs are not included, driver reinstallation discs (such as XPS flashy lights, as well as printers and monitors) are not included either. Therefore, don't just include the software reinstallation discs -- include as well the Windows/Linux drivers for the hardware (depending on the OS purchased with the computer, if any, which in turn depends on the user's preferences).

Besides, Microsoft as well as ALL software companies include the discs when you get the software seperately, so why can't Dell do the same when the software is preinstalled...?
Customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media.
