Support higher speed memory

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Gaming submitted by shirk 05/19/07

Stop offering quad core CPU, SLI graphic cards, and terabyte hard drive systems that are limited to older low speed memory. Customers who purchase these higher end systems want their components to be up to date and cutting edge, so drop the ancient 533-667 mhz memory. Also stop crippling motherboards so that they wont support higher speed memory so customers are stuck without a choice. Give customers current memory, 800 mhz and up, for their brand new systems. 2 Comments »

No discounts, just low prices! (consumer products)

Sales Strategies submitted by mistern 05/19/07

Warning first: I'm talking about the consumer segment only.

Don't provide any discounts at all. Just low prices. Discounts are a source of frustration when they don't apply, and if they apply to everybody, they're a lie. 2 Comments »

Make all parts optional

Sales Strategies submitted by yank 05/20/07

Plenty of people spend a LOT of time shopping around on Dell's site for a great deal. They trust the brand and haven't the time or interest to build there own PC so when they see a good deal they try and buy that new Dell PC with as few options as they can manage.
Let them!
Allow them to remove:
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
Hard Drive
Video Card
Etc.
Keep just the minimum basics and allow them to pick and choose what they want! 12 Comments »

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Less number / character combinations

Sales Strategies submitted by mistern 05/18/07

Would love to see new products with reasonable names. Something I understand. 6 Comments »

Interchangable battery, DVD, HDD, or FDD in the same slot.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by chewd 05/18/07

Have a look at the old compaq LTE series of laptops. They had a battery in the back, and on either side a slot about the size of a slimline optical drive in which you could put either a slimline drive, a floppy drive, a hard drive, or (with a special adapter) another battery.

This layout gave you extreme flexibility. You could put a hard disk in each side, and in addition to the integrated drive youd have 3 hard disks. Or you could have 2 hdds & 1 cdrom. Or no cdrom & 3 batteries.... a floppy in one side a cdrom in the other, 2 cdrom drives, the combinations are limitless (well not really, but you get my drift)

This would give users the ability to reconfigure their machine to fit their needs in minutes.

Additionally, you could have an option to get a port replicator with 1 or more of these same slots, so you could put the dvd drive in the port replicator most of the time,or pull it out & put it in the machine itself if you think youll need it on the road. 5 Comments »

Bring the Latitude to the Home/Home Office (Latitude equals Dell style and quality as it SHOULD be!)

Latitude products, Sales Strategies submitted by hotuan87 05/18/07

Compare the touch and feel of a MacBook to that of an Inspiron. It doesn't compare. The Inspiron isn't as stylish, and has a cheap plasticky feel. The MacBooks are solid, sturdy, and, if you have a MacBook PRO, made of metal.
For college students such as myself who put our computers through the abuse of daily use, it only gets worse. My Mac colleagues, however, still show off their shiny (literally) only slightly beaten MacBooks.

The Latitude, however, is everything the Inspiron should be in terms of design and style. Don't limit the Latitude to just Business users, get it to your average consumer!

People shouldn't be comparing the look and feel of MacBooks to Inspirons, they should be comparing them to Latitudes! 3 Comments »

packing and presentation.

Environment, Sales Strategies submitted by dhari 05/19/07

Even the high end laptop or printer of dell comes in an ugly brown carton without any mention of what is inside! Compare it with any other laptop in market, all others have colorful packs. Is it for cutting the cost? The customer should feel that he is buying a valued product, and it should show how it is delivered and presented. 11 Comments »

Team up with Tascam for laptop music studio.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by chewd 05/19/07

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Dell should team up with Tascam to make a laptop with integrated 4-channel recording system. 4 1/4" audio jacks on either side (which pass-thru so you can use it as a low-end mixer as well) optionally with a couple of those being 3-pin balanced input. Put mixer-board volume sliders & recording controls on the lid so it can be used just like a regular tascam, but when you open it, its a laptop & you can do your post-processing and mixing right there on the same machine.

The machine could also be programmed to be a multi-function effects processor, adding reverb, distortion, digital delay, or whatever to the channels as they pass-through.

Please pardon my limited gimp-skills, apologies to dell (and tascam) for butchering their product pics. 3 Comments »

Ruggardized Military Grade Tablet PC

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by pkarlos_76 05/19/07

In the field I work I see multiple possibilities of use of a ruggardized military grade Tablet PC. While we can purchase this specialized companies, these companies are limited to slow outdated updates of the product that we would see 5 to 6 years ago. They have a weak research and development levels for the most part due to limited cash flow. I would like to see Dell offer both semi ruggardized version of the tablet pc and fully ruggardized military grade tablet pc's. 2 Comments »

You name it: Processor, LCD, hard drive, memory, graphics card, optical drive -- take the old one out and put a new component it, all within minutes. The notebook is designed around the core principle of it being easy to upgrade.

Maybe you already have a flexible computer like this one? 9 Comments »

Offer hybrid hard drives for better Vista performance

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Operating Systems submitted by dnorton 05/18/07

The ReadyBoost feature of Vista uses flash memory to dramatically improve performance. You can do this via a USB key, but hybrid hard drives with a flash memory cache on them are a better way to do it, and don't use up a USB port. 4 Comments »

Now You Choose – Concept 1

Gaming, XPS products submitted by dell_admin1 04/25/07

Participate in the product design process! Dell is using IdeaStorm to decide between two new product design concepts. Vote on your favorite and weigh in to tell us what you think.

When we unveiled the XPS 710 H2C at CES this year, we also uncovered it. There were a limited number of systems sprinkled throughout the show floor that had a clear side panel allowing easy viewing of the patent-pending two-stage H2C liquid cooling system.

Since then, more than a few people have suggested we offer a “panel with a view” as an option for our XPS 710 line. Now we need you to vote for one of these two options and, most importantly, share some reasons why you like it.

This “Now You Choose” vote campaign will be open from Wednesday, April 25 to Friday, May 11. The design that gets the most votes will be featured in a future generation of XPS gaming desktops.

Dell should sue its greatest enemy -- Death to "http://www.ihatedell.net"!

Dell submitted by winoffice 05/12/07

That web site is offensive and almost certainly is illegal, and unfairly damages Dell's reputation. In fact, I am sure that most of us here at Ideastorm love Dell just for creating Dell Ideastorm! If Dell would sue ihatedell, then things would surely be better for all of us Dell fans. 11 Comments »

More RAM!

Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

No OS Preloaded

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by agreer 02/17/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I have a XP Pro retail copy, will soon buy retail vista, I also like Linux: Make WINDOWS-FREE, and OS-Free an option for more than just expensive business lines.

Dell has systems available that do not have an OS pre-loaded called N-Series line. You can check them out at www.dell.com/nseries.

Dont eliminate XP just yet

Operating Systems submitted by javaprog07 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.
Check out the Idea in Action to find out more about Dell offering XP.

Always include all software and driver reinstallation discs for free (or at least let us get the option to)... don't make us pay extra

Software submitted by winoffice 05/01/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Always include ALL software AND driver reinstallation discs for FREE (or at let us get the option do get the for free if we want as follows)...don't make us pay extra in case that we have a disaster and need to reinstall from scratch...!

No Discs Included (Included In Price)

All Discs Included (this means everything -- all software discs -- OS/Security software/etc., and all driver discs -- this means Windows or Linux drivers or both, whatever applies -- add $0)

Other options (OS disc only, all software discs only, driver discs only, etc. -- add $0)

For some computers, Dell does not include the reinstallation discs. Even if Dell offers them, Dell charges extra for us to get them. In fact, the only time I seen reinstallation discs being offered without charge were for Dell XPS desktops with the flashy lights -- that is, the Dell XPS 600, 700, and 710 systems, for those ware the only systems to offer operating system options like "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center WITH REINSTALLATION CD".

Also, most of the time when software reinstallation discs are not included, driver reinstallation discs (such as XPS flashy lights, as well as printers and monitors) are not included either. Therefore, don't just include the software reinstallation discs -- include as well the Windows/Linux drivers for the hardware (depending on the OS purchased with the computer, if any, which in turn depends on the user's preferences).

Besides, Microsoft as well as ALL software companies include the discs when you get the software seperately, so why can't Dell do the same when the software is preinstalled...?
Customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media.
