Provide a way to associate similar ideas/posts
IdeaStorm submitted by hjwasson
04/26/07
There should be a way to associate many similar posts together. If you page through IdeaStorm, you will find clouds of posts regarding "Please don't kill the Axim," "Fix the search feature," etc.
1. IdeaStorm members should be able to click on "This post seems similar to another post."
2. They can then paste the URL of the similar post(s) and click Okay.
3. There should be an "I agree/disagree" voting function for each URL, similar to the current promote/demote. This would appear on all of the potentially similar posts.
4. Once the agree value reaches a set threshold (say 100 points), the posts become associated.
5. Associated posts get a sub-heading stating "This post is associated with x, y, z" and there should be an aggregate value of all the points earned by the associated posts.**
**This is the heart of the matter - if there was an easy way for Dell (& all of us) to see just how popular a general topic of discussion was, I think you'd be able to spot huge trends that might otherwise get buried because no one individual post got enough posts to rise to the top of the discussion lists.

DELL: Offer CrossOver Office 6.1 as a for-pay option with Ubuntu

Ubuntu Founder: No Emulation Software for Dell Systems
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,2125848,00.asp?kc=EWRSS03129TX1K0000616< I WILL agree that vanilla Wine should NOT be included with the Dell-offered Ubuntu, I believe Dell NEEDS to do the following:
1) Offer CrossOver Office 6.1 as a for-pay option 2) list Windows software titles ALSO as options where said titles have been certified BY CrossOver Office for 6.1
This will open the door wider for those of us who still have Windows software to run while preferring to move TO Linux.
My bottom-line point:
DELL: Give us all the tools to HELP us SELL YOUR offer to OTHERS!
IF Dell is SERIOUS about offering Linux, they must consider meeting ALL the needs of customers desiring to purchase systems with Linux pre-loaded

Learn from the "Hello, I'm a MAC... and I'm a PC" ads
Dell submitted by dsdreamer
04/29/07
Hello, I am a Dell user both at home and at work, and I have watched all the commercials at http://www.apple.com/getamac/
I think Dell could learn a lot from them. Whether or not Apple's claims are true of their own products, it is clear to me that they've nailed the downsides of the typical PC user experience. So why not tackle a few of them, and provide a differentiated, high-value experience to your customers?
Stuffed: The bloatware experience that renders a Dell PC almost unusable out of the box. Other posts have been pleading for a way around that.
Computer Cart: Windows PCs tend to fail with cryptic error messages. Why not provide an application that reads the Windows error logs and interprets them in plain english?
Security: Provide a Dell Quickset option to turn off Vista's UAC (with suitable education about the risks)?
iLife: Why are all the PC's multimedia tools always fighting each other for control of the playback of each media file type? Even Microsoft's Windows Media player is trying to take over playback tasks from the same company's Windows Media Center. This is just absurd. It's the opposite of integration. I think Dell should provide an integrated user experience instead of taking subsidies to pre-install a dozen competing media apps that confuse, distract and ultimately never serve the end-user.
Out of the Box: "Well, first I've got to download those new drivers, and then erase the trial software that came on my hard-drive." Why is it that the driver configuration and BIOS and optical drive firmware all need multiple updates before any Delll system I've purchased will run smoothly? Take a look at the number of urgent or recommended driver / firmware / BIOS updates that are already posted for the Dell Dimension 9200/410. It's pretty much a full-time job to keep up with them. If the maturity of the chipset drivers from Dell's suppliers are so poor, one method of attack is to narrow the range of supported chipsets, and keep your customers away from the bleeding edge; another would be to develop an automated configuration management solution for the drivers in any Dell PC.
I've no idea whether Apple, HP or any other vendor scores better in the above-mentioned aspects than Dell does. I'm just saying that anyone who could solve a bunch of these issues could provide a value proposition that many of us would appreciate.

Firefox, Mozilla thunderbird as well as mozilla sunbird

I have been an internet user for the past 5 years, I have used all almost all the browsers, and without doubt i can say that in terms of performance, security, and user interface the open source browsers are the best, the kind of addons and features i get with Firefox i will never be getting with internet explorer, so i was thinking why do not dell ship computers with Firefox Mozilla thunderbird and the calendar software subird???? it could add to the efforts of the open source community, me as a supporter for the open source community would love to see Dell systems with open source applications, I would request that all people who support open source please cast your valuable vote for this idea, I was also thinking that if the Mozilla community cooperates with Dell , Dell could have a customized browser which will be really good for the customers of the Dell and it could add value to the Dell line of products, lets see the what Dell's thinks about this idea//?
Do post your feedbacks,
Thank you

Could Dell Own Green?
Environment submitted by adrian
02/01/07 **REVIEWED**
Environmental concern and sustainability are today real issues with consumers and voters in many of Dell's markets. It looks as if a genuine commitment to reducing carbon and cleaning up their footprint will become a more important factor for companies wanting to strengthen consumer loyalty in the coming years.
Dell has already made its environmental commitment clear. My suggestion is that this could become a hallmark of the company - why not make the products, literally, green? If Apple can own 'pretty' and IBM/Lenovo can own 'serious', why can't Dell own 'green'? Dell continues to do a lot to support our environment like our Plant a Tree for Me program and other activities documented on our Environment blog on Direct2Dell. Click here for more details.

make it possible to buy a machine with ONLY the OS and drivers installed with none of those garbage "trail softwares"
Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dontlunch
04/27/07
Please stop including so many peices of "trial software" in new machines. I didn't ask for any of that stuff, and I don't want any of that stuff.
When I buy a computer with vista or XP that is ALL I want. I don't want a thirty-day version of AOL, or a bunch of stupid cheap games or 30-days of macafee or 30 days of MS office or any of all that other garbage that is always installed. Its a real hassel to either figure out how to uninstall everything, or reinstall the OS from scratch. i shouldn't have to do that, I shouldn't be forced to get software I don't want.
You could have an option to purchase a machine with ONLY the OS and your hardware drivers installed and nothing else. (I'd be willing to pay an extra 5 or 10 bucks to be saved the hassel of trying to clean all that garbage software off of a brand new machine, and that would help offset the loss of the money all those companies pay you to install thier garbage on all your machines)

Put a light on the notebooks that can be turned on to illuminate the keyboard...tough to work in a dark / dimly lit room with no keyboard light.

Sound Reduction?
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by theonlyho
05/06/07
Every time I see a Dell laptop, all I can think of is a noisy loud fan. Loud fans to me give a very annoying background noise, and also creates more heat than needed. I say Dell should make or find fans that will be equally effective, but half the sound. That way it's the happy way to go for the user and anyone who have a Dell laptop next to them.

Make the edges and top rubber. It gives the sense that the laptop is stronger, even though it probably isn't. The Pepperpad has nice rubber edges.

Dell Could Become the OpenGL Hero to the Open Source Community
Linux submitted by hmwamboldt
05/01/07
For a very long time, OpenGL support in the Open Source community has been spotty at best.
If Dell would take on the role of comprehensive testing, and repackaging (for updates) Nvidia or ATI drivers for several supported hardward (and software) configurations, that would make Dell a hero, at least to me. I've spent an inordinate amount of time installing, updating, patching, downgrading, and repairing damage done to systems by installing OpenGL drivers and OpenGL related system crashes over the last few years. It should be noted, (in defence of ATI and Nvidia) that many, if not most, of these problems stem from interactions with various chipsets, bridges, and bugs in various Xorg components. Hence my emphasis on testing.
Furthermore, if Dell could encourage Nvidia and ATI to release the specs for their oldest propriatary hardware (it's gotta be at least 4 or 5 years old now), that would probably provide a global benefit. But, if nothing else, comprehensive testing of new drivers and providing "Dell certified" update packages for Linux, would probably make Dell a prefered vendor for many, many midtier OpenGL users like myself.

Add "Report Duplicate" link for articles.
IdeaStorm submitted by akidan
05/06/07
Similar to the 'Report Abuse' link appearing in each IdeaStorm article, it would be nice to have a 'Report Duplicate' link as well, with the ability to specify the duplicate article. This would prevent wasted time and space on reading duplicates.

Create a Separate Linux Area on the Front Page
Linux, Software submitted by rockettech
05/06/07
Create a separate category on the front page for Linux: Home/Home Office, Small/Medium Business, Education, Enterprise, Linux. One of the potential pitfalls I see for Dell offering Linux machines would be the uninformed user selecting a Linux machine. Picture this- It's Tax time, Joe Customer goes to Staples and purchases TurboTax and attempts to install it on his new Linux Dell. Nothing but problems ensue, so who does he blame? Himself?? Heck no. The backlash will be on Dell, Linux, and TurboTax. Emulators are not the answer in all cases. I think Linux needs to be differentiated some way on the Dell site, to allow easy access to those who want it, and to obscure it from those that may be harmed by it.

Mark posts as "Duplicate"
IdeaStorm submitted by thorin_2
02/21/07
Many posts are duplicates. A demote button may help but really you need a "Is duplicate" button. If an item get's tagged "duplicate" a certain number of times it get's dropped. Perhaps only after enough tags that include a link to the source or superior post that is *being* duplicated. The fact that there are so many duplicate posts really muddies up the survey pool and makes the vendor's work all that more difficult to compile poll results.

The Clutter Is Forming: We Need A Moderator
Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by googideas
02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**
Approximately 48 hours into its life, and Ideastorm is filling up with repetition and senseless comments. Since moderation cannot be exercised by the participants a moderator a la Dell Employee must put up her hand. Or his hand. We aren't picky!
One: Repeating the same ideas from earlier posts is a pain to the reader and a waste of space and time. These should be removed.
Two: Suggestions which are without applicability to the issues at hand should be removed: one post states that "Dell should set up Dell Pay to compete with Paypal." Sigh. Why?
For what unique purpose? Dell's business is not online payments, in the same way Apple's is not selling music (they sell music at a loss to sell iPods at a gain). There is no benefit to Dell and it meets no need.
Since this format is experimental and fully funded by Dell, I encourage Dell to cut the wheat from the chafe and remove as much as they see fit. For all of the "I have rights" and "freedom of speech" advocates, you don't. This is a place where the good keep going and the bad go out.
The less posts the better. It provides Dell what they want: the opportunity to test strong ideas properly. Without the removal of clutter, the good ideas will by dint of the time they are posted (e.g. 3am) and the increasing volume of posts, inevitably suffer at times the forest's size despite the grandeur of the tree in question.
I may be going against the grain of popular opinion, but you add your vote to this post if you believe in the goal of this site, and not the freedom it offers to utter the first inane thing which comes to mind. jackie_c is IdeaStorm's moderator. Also, for any mod updates, check out the talk with the moderator blog at the top of the page.

Ubuntu and more
Linux submitted by p2justin
05/03/07
I think that in addition to Ubuntu being preinstalled on Dell computers other distributions should be offered as well. But there should also be a little "Which Linux is Best for Me" button next to the row of check boxes where you get to pick what you want. That would give Linux a big boost and give Dell users more freedom.
