The ULTIMATE Laptop

Laptops submitted by codecurl 04/20/07

A year ago I bought a maximum spec Dell Inspiron 9400: I put as much as I possibly could into it - 17" TrueLife 1920x1200 display, 2GB RAM, fastest Core Duo at the time, fastest available hard drive, best video card option etc. etc. But it's not enough for me!

As a professional software engineer, this is what I really want (and no, I don't want a desktop):

- 20" TrueLife 2600x1620 display
- dual 160+ GB harddrives so I can do RAID stripe level 0
- 2 max speed Core Duo - so Quad Core
- 8 GB RAM
- max graphics
- a better keyboard than the Inspiron
- a slightly more rugged case
- easily upgradable ... its never fast enough

This has got to weigh in under 5.5 Kgs to be luggable on my back, and I know it would not be cheap, but it would be worth it. 4 Comments »

high resolution laptop screens

Laptops submitted by chmbr 02/17/07

In May 2003, I bought a 15.4" screen Inspiron with 1920X1200 resolution. today -- and for most of the last year -- the best you sell in a 15.4 is 1600X1050. What gives? How long do we have to keep our old laptops before you create a product which is on a par with 4 years ago? (Not all of us want to lug 17" monsters -- and if we did, we would want more resolution than we could get 4 years ago in a smaller laptop.)

Also, why do you almost never make high speed drives available in laptops in larger size drives?

The basics, the basics, man! 5 Comments »

Better explain the LCD Panel options.

Dell Web Site submitted by jmxz 05/24/07

Your e-commerce page:
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&kc=6V440&l=en&o...
offers LCD panel options including
"15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WXGA+ Display with TrueLife™ [subtract $50]"
and
"15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen SXGA+ Display with TrueLife™ [Included in Price]".
You provide a potentially helpful Help Me Choose link [1] that describes WXGA, WXGA+, WSXGA+ and WUXGA, but not SXGA+.

One idea is that if SXGA+ is offered on that e-commerce page, add SXGA+ to the "Help Me Choose" page.

Also, hidden elsewhere in the Dell website[2] , but not linked by that product, you have more helpful specs on laptops that include info like Viewing Angles, Contrast Ratios, Luminance, etc.

The second idea is to add that information the the "Help Me Choose" page.

[1] a help me choose link not describing SXGA+ [2] a more useful help me choose link, but don't know if it applies to this model

Bring Back a 15.4" 1920X1200 Inspiron

Inspiron products submitted by rockettech 05/25/07

Bring back a high-resolution 15.4" display coupled with a top-end video card. The Latitude D830 has a 15.4" 1920X1200 display but offers Intel integrated graphics only. The Precision M65 is not mainstream and comes with limited options while it is very expensive. I think a 15.4" 1920X12" laptop display would have great appeal to developers, graphic artists, hi-def video users and creators, and multi-taskers. The work area is huge, but still in a manageable and portable size. Don't forget to put a DVI video connector instead of VGA as well. 4 Comments »

1920x1200

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by 1234567a 05/06/07

Please offer displays at 1920x1200 resolution on more laptops. I could really go for a 15.5 or 17 inch laptop with such a resolution

Also offer more choices for graphics cards. 1 Comment »

Silent / Quiet Computers: Sound levels in decibels

Desktops and Laptops submitted by pchris 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle.

How a manufacturer can produce an expensive computer, and then have the user acoustic experience of that computer dominated by the noise generated by a cheap fan worth just pennies, for the entire lifetime of that computer, is incomprehensible. Computers are noisy when brand new, but those cheap fans begin to rub and oscillate and make additional annoying noises, frequently within a short period of time of purchase.

Personally, the peace and quiet of my personal workspace is very important to me, it's my sanctuary from the world where I can focus and be creative. To have that experience disrupted by cheap fans is sad, especially when slightly more expensive fans and some reasonable design would solve the issue. Another reason why I consider buying an Apple.

If the cost of a better sound design and fans is significant, it could be an extra cost option.
In general, Dell provides noise data of its products in the Environmental Datasheets. Tests are conducted according to ISO standards in a NVLAP accredited acoustics facility. Click here for more details

TV Commercial for New Ubuntu PCs

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by josmar52789 05/03/07

Dell should produce a new commercial for the Ubuntu PCs. It could tell the consumers of America why Dell has chosen to pre-install Linux on mainstream computers and hopefully promote the advantages of this new endeavor. Plus, it's likely that Dell's Linux initiative would be much more successful. 117 Comments »

More RAM!

Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Always include all software and driver reinstallation discs for free (or at least let us get the option to)... don't make us pay extra

Software submitted by winoffice 05/01/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Always include ALL software AND driver reinstallation discs for FREE (or at let us get the option do get the for free if we want as follows)...don't make us pay extra in case that we have a disaster and need to reinstall from scratch...!

No Discs Included (Included In Price)

All Discs Included (this means everything -- all software discs -- OS/Security software/etc., and all driver discs -- this means Windows or Linux drivers or both, whatever applies -- add $0)

Other options (OS disc only, all software discs only, driver discs only, etc. -- add $0)

For some computers, Dell does not include the reinstallation discs. Even if Dell offers them, Dell charges extra for us to get them. In fact, the only time I seen reinstallation discs being offered without charge were for Dell XPS desktops with the flashy lights -- that is, the Dell XPS 600, 700, and 710 systems, for those ware the only systems to offer operating system options like "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center WITH REINSTALLATION CD".

Also, most of the time when software reinstallation discs are not included, driver reinstallation discs (such as XPS flashy lights, as well as printers and monitors) are not included either. Therefore, don't just include the software reinstallation discs -- include as well the Windows/Linux drivers for the hardware (depending on the OS purchased with the computer, if any, which in turn depends on the user's preferences).

Besides, Microsoft as well as ALL software companies include the discs when you get the software seperately, so why can't Dell do the same when the software is preinstalled...?
Customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media.

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Student Discounts!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by cnmopt 02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy. 42 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

Laptop display

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by feeneyl 04/23/07

The display on the laptops that are currently sold by Dell (and its competitors) pose a problem for individuals with a certain type of vision problem. They are highly reflective making the screen contents extremely difficult to view. The surface is mirror-like. I don't want to see my reflection. I want to be able to view the screen. Please bring back a matte option on laptop displays. 8 Comments »

Private customers should be able to buy notebooks for small business

Sales Strategies submitted by talkrabb 02/21/07

Private customers should be able to buy notebooks for small business

I am a German customer who would like to buy a Latitude D820 notebook with 15,4"-WUXGA display and Vista business.

This notebook is not available for "Home & Home office" customers.

Why is this not allowed for persons who don't own a company?

I tried twice to contact the sales hotline because there is no email address on the German Dell website. After 10 minutes of waiting I reached a person who hardly spoke German (eastern Europe accent) and who was not able to understand my questions.

A couple of days later I tried again and after another 15 minutes of waiting I reached a person who I hardly understood but who was able to understand me. I explained him the configuration I intended to buy and he told me to configure the notebook pretending to be a "small business customer" online and then send him the configuration via email. Therefore he gave me his email address.
I did so and mailed it the same day. That was two weeks ago. I haven't received a response yet... Comment »
