Notebook ports on the back

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by falbert May 22

Am I the only one that hates having ports of anykind on the sides of my notebook. I like my ports out of sight in the back.
Maybe the headphone jack in the front and a few USB ports on the sides at the back.
I would suggest dropping : parralel, serial, pcmcia, infrared, mic input (integrate it in or use bluetooth) and the modem (who uses 56k modems today???) 10 Comments »

Give Open Source Software a Higher profile On Dell.com

Dell Web Site submitted by aikiwolfie May 22

From InformationWeek.com : Open Source Quality Improving, But Development Assumptions Need Revising

This report confirms what open source supporters have known all along. Open source developers deliver very high quality code. As such Dell should be giving the open source developers it uses a higher profile on Dell.com instead of hiding them away in some dark recess out of the way!

At the very least give your own in-house open source developers more exposure! They deserve it after all the top quality code they've produced, tested and tweaked. 3 Comments »

Reduce height of XPS Towers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by memsley May 22

Hi,
I have a desk with a CPU cabinet that can fit a computer 17.75" high. I want to buy a powerful computer for photo processing/gaming and I love the XPS420, but unfortunately it is 18" high and can't fit in the desk. Please make some computers that are just as powerful but a little smaller then your high end XPS lines.

Thanks,

It would be awesome if there was an option to include LightFX with all XPS laptops just like the XPS M1730 16 Comments »

XPS 630 Pci Card For master I/O board and rear LED board.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, XPS products submitted by skimmy May 22

If it is possible. Dell could make a pci card That we could connect the master I/O board and the rear led board to and not connect them to the motherboard. we could install any after market motherboard and not worry about losing control of the Front./Rear LEDS Or the HDD/Pci cage fans. since we wont need to worry about about the missing connections on say an evga motherboard.

How much could the pci card cost? $20 - $40 tops? I think that is the least dell can do. and it wouldn't be as costly as replacing an outdated motherboard. that is not even supported by the nvidia control panel software.

I believe this would make the XPS 630 truly ATX. 4 Comments »

DELL UMPC

Desktops and Laptops submitted by haveacoke 02/19/07

I've been wanting a UMPC since I heard about them, but I can't find any that has what I want and with the power to back it up, Dell could definitely pull it off... and here is what I'm looking for in a Dell UMPC:

*The usually Dell customizability
*Microsoft Windows Vista (any version that supports tablet)
*Core Solo/Duo/2 Duo+ Processor
*1Gig+ Memory
*60Gig+ Hard Drive (ReadyDrive would be nice)
*Touchscreen/Bluetooth 2.0/Wireless 802.11N/GPS
*Optional Cellphone Internet Service (already available on their laptops)
*2-3+MP Camera/Video
*NVIDIA Video Card (very important - would be first)
*DVI or HDMI Connections
*7.1 HD Audio Out
*Card Reader/USB (at least 2-4 ports)
*Windows SideShow Support from Dell

Improve your high-end (>$1000) PCs - Apple's doing well there.

Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz May 23

Fortune Magazine this month has an interesting article on Apple 2.0

Report: Apple’s market share of PCs over $1,000 hits 66%
...
Mac Q1 '08 Retail Share ... All Desktops: 14%
Mac Q1 '08 Retail Share ... All Notebooks: 14%
Mac Q1 '08 Retail Share ... $1,000+ Desktops: 70%
Mac Q1 '08 Retail Share ... $1,000+ Notebooks: 64%
...
Still, Apple’s share of the $1,000-plus retail market was less than 18% in January 2006 according to NPD. By September 2007, it had grown to more than 57%. And in the first quarter of 2008 it hit a record 66%.

I imagine this >$1000 segment is more profitable than the budget segment too.
Wonder what Dell needs to do to catch Apple here. It'd be interesting to see if people have good specific places Dell needs to improve compared to Apple on >$1000 machines in the comments.. 3 Comments »

The XPS M2030

XPS products submitted by darthomer May 23

Resume the XPS M2010 Line with the XPS M2030. It is for people who want to bring the AWSOME power and Resolution of a Dell XPS 730 with them on the go. It is for X-treme Gaming and CPU Killing Simulations (Like Flight Simulator X) I have Some Pictures of it (They are screenshots of a detailed Google Sketchup 6 model) I want it to be as light and as thin as possible. Assuming that the GPU and Hard drive are thick I think it will be as thick as a XPS M1730 But if the parts are thinner please dell make it as light and thin as possible if you make this Laptop. unlike the XPS M2010 Its a Real Laptop not a Portable Desktop. Here is a description of the design, it has the basic shape of a XPS M1530 and I forgot to put the Dell Logos on the barrel Hinges like on a XPS M1530 but the Final Design should have that, It has the Glowing Wings (The area seen around the two XPS logos) like on XPS M1710s and XPS M1730s, It has the glowing letters on the keyboard the glowing XPS logo on the mouse pad and on the bottom of the buttons on the mouse pad. Here are some pictures

Prospective :

Tech (showing where stuff is) :

If you and Dell find better places to put stuff and more good features (like more USB ports) please tell me

Here are the specs:

Operating System: Windows Vista Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate

Screen : HD Truelife 20.1" screen with built-in Microphone and 2.0 Megapixel Webcam

CPU : 3.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme over-clocked form 2.8GHz

GPU : 1024MB Nvidia e-Geforce 9800 GX2 SCC Edition SLI ready (The ATI Raidon Crossfire X Used on the Alienware ALX is equal to this one and the Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX is only 512MB !!! The resolution 1920 x 1200 is like cutting butter to this Monster )

PPU (Physics Processing Unit ) : AGIEA PhysX Accelerator

RAM: 8GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 667MHz

Hard Drive : RAID Performance 700GB 7200RPM, Nearly 1TB!

Sound Card : X-FI X-treme HD Audio

Internet : Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card

Internal Optical Drive : CD-RW, DVD-RW, and BR-RW (CD, DVD, Blue Ray) Reading and Writing Drive

input : light-up full keyboard (letters light up), Light up mouse pad, Built-in microphone and 2.0MP Webcam

Lighting : Keyboard (light up letters) Mouse pad (XPS logo on)
logos in the chrome wings, vents on the front (like on a XPS M1710) 44 Comments »

Ask Your Customers to Write A Review of Their Dell Experience

Service and Support submitted by joyscant1980 May 24 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Having great products will not do much for you if you do not provide a good experience through the whole purchase. This includes ordering, dealing with customer care when there are delays, the financial services department, everything.

Some people love your products but hate your service, you are losing customers because of it and worse yet, potential customers. Let your present customers tell you what it is like to buy your products IN THEIR OWN WORDS and not on a scale from 1 - 10.

If you appear to be making a real effort to correct what has gone wrong with your company, a customer may be willing to give you a second chance but you have to make the effort. The first step is finding out what kind of experience each customer had.

Knowing where you are helps you in finding where you need to go.

21 Day Return policy extended if you have an issue when you recieve your computer.

Service and Support submitted by lvl3catastrophe May 24

Ok I received my computer and it immediately started having a problem where it would just restart when I was multi-tasking. I tried to use the tech support because I like the computer just wanted the problem fixed. After weeks of troubleshooting I was no where and the tech wanted me to format the HD and reinstall windows for the third time. I knew it had to be an hard ware issue but most foreign tech reps DON'T LISTEN and stink at trouble shooting. I was very angry I just wanted it fixed but didn't have the time to sit on the phone with a tech rep for hours and get no actual trouble shooting. So I wanted to return the computer but it was the 23rd day from the SHIP date I didn't have the computer for 21 days yet but it was counted from the ship date so I was stuck. There should be an extension on the 21 day return policy and your warranty if you have an existing problem that is documented during the period of the policy.
(On a side note just had the motherboard replaced and the computer seems to be working fine) 3 Comments »

Lower the price on your LED backlit screens.

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by jervis961 May 24

Currently Dell charges $150 to upgrade a notebook to a LED backlit screen. A recent article shows the price difference between the two technologies is only about $8 now. http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4424

I know there are additional costs for Dell to build the thinner casing to hold the LED but I don't see plastic costing $100 (leaving $42 for profit). I expect that Dell could drop the cost by $50 to $75 easily which would drive sales and continue to drop the cost of the technology. 4 Comments »

Allow Canadians to order from Dell.com (USA)

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by junior May 24

Allow Canadians to order Electronics, Software, & Accessories from Dell.com (USA). What I mean is Dell.com has more Software, Electronics and Accessories than Dell.ca has. Say you want a high end wireless router that you see on Dell.com, and your a Canadian, you check Dell.ca if its there, and its not, which is pretty stupid and makes me abit mad. Dell.com should allow Canadians to order from their website. In check out of Dell.com, if a Canadian sees something he likes and its not on Dell.ca, there should be a tab on Dell.com in the shopping cart of check out and delivery, it should say Canada, but United States by Default because its a US website, and once the shipping address is changed to Canada, the price should change to a Canadian price.

Promote please.

Dell.ca does not have everything that Dell.com has. 3 Comments »

The only improvement needed for the XPS 730

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by killadaedalus May 24

At this current point in time with this model (XPS 730) you only offer DUAL 1GB ATI® Radeon® 3870 X2 Crossfire X Graphics Cards. In my opinion I think that you should also offer the technologically superior Nvidia Geforce 8800GTX x2 or the geforce 8800GTX ultra x2. This is for all the Nvidia fans out there who prefer this line of product... such as myself :) Comment »

Merged comments should not have the date of merge but rather their original date

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern May 24

Comments always have a date field, which is certainly useful for evaluating them quickly. However, comments merged from other postings are shown to have the date of the merging rather than the original date at which they were posted. I think it would be useful if that was different.

Yes, the original date is shown inside the comment, but this is not consistent with the rest of the date fields. I think it should be the other way round: The date field should show the original date, and the merging comment should indicate the merging date.

Don't abbreviate date information

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern May 24

Sometimes, the IdeaStorm platform shows dates as "20 Minutes ago" or "May 30th". I'd like them to be showed always in a consistent format, which might help improve usability of the site. The format could be something like this: "2008-05-25 01:56 UTC". If you prefer another timezone, please don't forget to also signify the timezone. Other formats would be fine, too, as long as they are consistent across the site and don't fail to convey significant information.

Thank you. 6 Comments »

giving old computers to underpriveleged people

Environment, Education submitted by drorb73 May 25 **REVIEWED**

An acquaintance of mine is going to start college soon on financial aid, and does not have the resources to purchase a new computer. Currently lots of people send their old computers back to "recycling" programs whereby the machines are shipped to China where some kid breaks them open bare-handed. Instead, computer manufacturers could reinstall some reasonable software on them and give them away (perhaps at a token cost) to under-priveleged people here in developed countries. I have no doubt that lots of perfectly decent 3 year old computers get junked - and there are lots of poor Americans and Europeans that could use these machines for another several years. Wouldn't this be more "green"? Thanks!
