Touch screen on laptops, with Microsoft Origami

Laptops submitted by matts Jun 14

If the iPhone can have a touch screen, why not a laptop? :)

Seriously, a small (or large!) XPS laptop with a touch screen would open up a lot of possibilities. Microsoft just came out with a new version of its Origami interface, which Dell could customize very nicely: http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsexperience/archive/2008/06/13/origam... 2 Comments »

The "Patriot"! American Made

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by sa2008 Apr 30

We live in a global marketplace with a global economy; however, many of us are still very proud to be AMERICAN. I would very much like to see Dell produce a laptop called the "Patriot". This machine should be AMERICAN made, and it should have a couple of really cool and patriotic color options.

color option 1 - camo with the end users choice of military logos
color option 2 - the US FLAG

I realize that Dell has move a portion of its workforce to other countries; however, I still consider Dell an AMERICAN company.

I see this type of laptop as an opportunity for Dell to give back a little to the people and the country that made it possible to be DELL.

I would also like to see a portion of every patriot laptop sold dedicated to a charity that specifically supports wounded soldiers and their families!

It's time for Dell to be AMERICAN PROUD!!!! 54 Comments »

The "Patriot" 2.0. Made in the customer's country.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by jmxz Apr 30

This is a variation of today's earlier "The_Patriot_American_Made Idea.

We live in a global marketplace with a global economy; and note that International Growth is extremely important for Dell. In 2006, Dell saw growth in Asia as sales in Korea, India and China rose by 54%, 40% and 29%, compared to I think 6% growth total sales. Dell spoke of 74 percent growth in Brazil. International sales continue to be a strong growth driver for Dell, and rather than any single-country-specific initiative, Dell should see how such projects could apply globally.

This idea is very similar to the earlier one linked, and the submitter worded it well, so I'll put quotes around the original text I'm copying.

Many Dell customers "are still very proud to be AMERICAN." - but even more Dell customers are proud to be citizens of whatever their respective country may be. " I would very much like to see Dell produce a laptop called the "Patriot". This machine should be" made in the country that the customer is a citizen of", and it should have a couple of really cool and patriotic color options.

color option 1 - camo with the end users choice of military logos
color option 2 - the "Country of the Customer's citizenship"

I see this type of laptop as an opportunity for Dell to give back a little to the people and the countr"ies" that made it possible to be DELL.

I would also like to see a portion of every patriot laptop sold dedicated to a charity that specifically supports wounded soldiers and their families" -- perhaps soldiers from the country of whom the Customer is a citizen; or perhaps charities supporting wounded soldiers and families from all countries in which Dell does business. 16 Comments »

Pacifist Patriot computers.

Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz Apr 30

This is a followup to the two "patriot" ideas from earlier today.

Both were focused on the military aspects of patriotism: "camo with the end users choice of military logos" ... "charity that specifically supports ... soldiers and their families". While those focused on the military, there are many ways of showing patriotism including non-violent ones.

If you do a military-patriotism-computer - please also do a non-military-patriot-computer too.

This would be just like the other ideas, but change
"choice of military logs" to "choice of non-military, government logos"
and change
"charity that supports...soldiers and their families" to "charity that supports non-soldiers and their families". 14 Comments »

XP Offered to XPS420 Customers

XPS products submitted by maddog Apr 30

Dell owes XPS 420 customers an apology and the option to purchase at reduced cost (better yet FREE) XP Pro, XP Media Center, XP Home WITH ALL drivers for installation on XPS 420 systems! I’ll gladly return my Vista disks for XP any day. I’ve learned to hate Vista with a passion I cannot express in a public forum. It’s the biggest joke Microsoft has played on its customers since Windows ME.

I recently purchased an XPS420 with Vista Home Premium. I was told by the sales person that XP was not available and would not work with this particular model. I had the system up and running XP Pro within 6 hours including hunting down drivers which was not easy. The only drivers that I haven’t been able to locate is for the Blue Tooth package (19 in 1 card reader). Some of the drivers came from the Vista Resource disk, some from the XPS210 drivers page, video card drivers from the manufacturer, and NIC from the internet using find drivers option. It feels like the system has doubled in speed and I’ve gained about 10 additional gigabytes in drive space over Vista. I’m a happy dude now BUT very disappointed in Dell for this deception. Still beats HP thought . . . 15 Comments »

Quality Checks by Humans

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by lambchops468 08/31/07

I ordered a Inspiron 1520 and I am fed up with the issues:

crashed hard drive (first 6 days) (I will forgive this one, happens on every manufacturer, its just luck)
vibrating optical drive (shakes entire notebook, abnormal, new one fixed it)
Grainy Screen
Headphone Noise
Casing Defect (bulge in case seam, can see inside notebook)

I think that dell should instute a quality check system on the computers they ship out. Not just tests that can be run on the computer automatically, but a actual person physically inspecting/testing the function of the notebook such as:
- Grainy Screen/backlight bleed (go get a HP laptop and see the difference, go to the store)
- Headphone Noise
- Casing Defects
- Optical Drives that make too much noise
- squeaky keys
- and other issues that cannot be detected by a hardware check running on a CPU

If you do not have the finances to create such a program, then you can add the service as part of the warranty, with a garuntee that the devices that are checked will not have problems on arrival. (So therefore the QC is optional)

This will actually make/save money because people like me won't have to send their laptops back and forth wasting your shipping money/technician fee replacing parts that would be replaced anyway at the quailty check program.

you could also send a special survey to early-adopters to identify the biggest problems in a new computer line and check those at quailty check, certifying those parts free of defects. 45 Comments »

Notebook with 12" Screen and XP

Monitors and Displays, Operating Systems, Laptops submitted by famoso_oso Apr 26

What I am looking for is a (sub-) notebook with a 12 " screen (13" is too big) and with the operating system XP. This would be really nice, handy and easy to travel with notebook. So far I looked around and mostly the 12" notebooks lack in perfromance concerning the the screen, mostly lower than 200 cd/m2 (Dell offers the 13" systems with 300cd/m2). So what I suggest is, "just" scale down your XPS M1330 system to a 12" system, and give the user the choice between Vista and XP!

demistify the CPU upgrade choices

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by blackkittypounce Apr 25

Give us some information about CPU speeds when selecting which CPU to go with when ordering. I would like to see how each CPU performs on maybe 2 or 3 different benchmarks so that I know what I'm getting for my money. Please promote this! Even this tech-savy user has trouble figuring this out! 1 Comment »

Nothing beats a hardware wheel for volume control!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by wheelie Apr 22

A simple request – an old fashioned analogue wheel for volume control for every computer with speakers. Fiddling with software volume controls [beep beep beep beep…] is a miserable experience and even hardware button controls are limited – the increments are usually too big or small for a given audio file. Reinvent the wheel! 3 Comments »

Media Bays for expanability on all laptop lines

Laptop Power submitted by sykosoft Apr 22

Not so long ago, nearly all Dell laptops had media bays (nearly all of the inspiron, latitude, and precision models). Expandability is one of the reason I come back to Dell again and again. Instead of having to purchase a new laptop to add a blu-ray (or whatever comes next) drive, I simply purchase the media bay device. Similarly, no matter how good battery life becomes, a single battery will NEVER be able to last as long as 2 batteries. 2 will always be more than 1. (rumor has it the e-series won't have a media bay battery, this would be very unfortunate!) 5 Comments »

Offer No OS Option on all PCs for Home / Small Business Markets

Operating Systems submitted by gear Apr 22

Why not sell PCs with no OS installed and just include the drivers disk for popular OSes that are known to work on it like (XP, Linux, and Vista).

I already have licenses for XP and Linux and I can install my own here.

Having the drivers disk would mean I don't have to download them. 3 Comments »

Windows XP on XPS M2010 and XPS One?

Software submitted by stormrider451 Mar 11

Hello...

Id like to suggest that the new models Dell just put out XPS M2010 and XPS One be offered with the ability to get Windows XP on them. The outcry to keep XP alive is stronger than ever. I think DELL needs to satisfy their costumers and put XP out for all their computers. XP is a solid OS, selling less appealing OS's on DELL's computers such as Vista will lower the quality of the computer the costumer gets. They might attribute their computer issues to being DELL's fault and not Windows (especially those who are not computer savy and cant distinguish OS problems from problems of the PC itself). So, why not just go to what works, lets get XP on these two top of the line computers and lets give the costumers better computers and less reasons to hate on DELL. Its simple really, just offer both XP and Vista. Whoever wants to upgrade to Vista can do it, but those who like XP do not have to settle for something they do not like. These two computers could get the Windows XP Media Center Edition OS.

Common dell, lets us all stick it to the man (Bill Gates that is) and force M$ to build better OS's. Why should Dell's business, product quality and costumer satisfaction be tarnished by M$'s slacking off on their products? I know that M$ probably gives incentives to DELL to sell their new products, but it isnt as if DELL would be replacing Vista with a non-Microsfot product. M$ knows they built a dud compared to XP, they wouldnt be lowering prices so rapidly if they didnt know. So, let em know you will be taking actions as well to satisfy your costumers. Vista will be available for anyone, but XP must be available too due to the circumstances that M$ has created for DELL and any other computer business. Dell, dont comply to M$, it will only take off pressure from M$ and they wont feel as in need to refine their products. Theyll be like: "we can make whatever product we want regardless of its quality, because computer companies will sell them anyways". "Plus, well simply remedy the faultyness of our product by making it extra annoying for XP people with compability issues etc so that they get forced to go to the Vista side ".

Thanks!

P.S. The OS's Dell sells influences people and results in loss of sales. If the OS stink, it gives unecessary reasons for people to turn to other products like Apple so that they can get a better OS with their system. Do we need to give potential apple buyers reasons to go to Apple? Over something as simple as just offering XP as an option? 5 Comments »

Creation of Leaders, Growth with Clients & Goodwill

Education submitted by narayaan Mar 10

Let me 1st start by bringing attention to the fact that there are plenty pf students across the globe who for some reason are denied of fullfilling their dreams with Education, here i present a layout which will allow each student who is dedicated to Knoweldge & Education while having the courage to start a fresh will be benefited while Dell can also
1]increase their Global Computer / Laptops sale,
2]Increase in Work Force, Obtain a set of New Generation Leaders who will be exposed to the work as well as culture of Asia, Europe & USA,
3] a chance for Dell to grow with New Cleints & Partnerships
4] Global Goodwill & Much More..

The below can also be implemented via the Corporate Social Responsibility or Corporate Citizenship program of Dell.

Being from India the below best fits the Indian Environment but parallels can be made for other places keeping in mind the key factors of the area in consideration.

The university that I know can provide this best education are:- 1] Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, USA [www.erau.edu <http: /> ] for its globally famous Engineering Physics degree. 2] INSEAD for its management degree [www.insead.edu] Here is how the project can be implemented in India 1] A call for all the students who are currently doing their engineering but have attempted the IIT-JEE can be called to local DELL office in place like Bangalore, Mysore etc., on weekend. The proof / document that the student needs to produce to enroll to become part of this project can be - IIT-JEE Registration Booklet OR - IIT-JEE Admit Card OR - IIT-JEE Performance Card Similar such criteria can be set for students in US, Australia & other places wherever DELL have their campus. 2] The student who becomes a part of this project can be provided with a Refresher / Foundation course until the CBSE 12th portion so as to make strong their basics for the world best education. The Refresher / Foundation course can be done in such a manner that it builds the entrepreneurship sprit in the student by allowing them to device or experiment with a method of learning that is being tested for its implementation at schools & other learning institutions across the world. The method selected while depending on individual student choice will vary from the School-in-Box to Learning-by-Example method being created by leaders in Artificial Intelligence. The exchange of talks & views between the students & the creator of the model will also help a lot in the growth & development of the students. The Refresher / Foundation course can be carried out for a span of 3 months after which the students can be inducted in the Engineering Physics degree from ERAU & the Refresher / Foundation course can be charged at Rs 10,000 per student. The education scenario of ERAU & INSEAD can be arranged such that 1] The students have a mode of completing their Engineering Physics degree in a time span of 6 semesters so as to ensure that there is not much loss of time & this can be done as all the students will have a mid-way engineering background. 2] The students can 1st obtain their degree from ERAU & then alone proceed to INSEAD 3] The students will be allowed to choose some course outside the set Engineering Physics portion of but taught at ERAU 4] The 1st semester or rather the 1st year can be conducted at the IISc campus Bangalore, India so all students from across the globe will be brought to India. 5] The 2nd year onwards the students can be allowed to join ERAU campus. * THE MAIN THING THAT SHOULD BE MADE CLEAR IS THAT THE ABOVE IS A GLOBAL INITIATIVE TO PROVIDE A OPPORTUNITY TO STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE WITHOUT ANY BARRIER OF CAST, CREED OR RELIGON & HENCE THE STUDENTS WILL BE PAYING THEIR OWN FEE TO BOTH ERAU & INSEAD. DELL can however develop easy loans on the basis that these student on completion of their education will work for DELL for a minimum stipulated time of 10 to 15 years or if they start a venture it will be in a client or partnership relation to DELL. What the above when implemented will provide to DELL 1] A global talent pool who will be well educated with both technical as well as management skills to head any division of DELL 2] By reading in Asia [1st year engineering at IISc Bangalore campus], ERAU USA & INSEAD France the students will be well exposed to the working culture in all these place & will be able to implement the best also as they will understand the different culture which will help in the development of new ideas among them. It will also make the students to co-exist removing all barriers of growing racism world over which is spreading into workplace too. 3] DELL develops better links with the professors at IISc, ERAU & INSEAD which might be very useful in future to improve the work culture & take DELL to the next level. 4] As this will be the 1st such project taken by any corporate organization it will bring plenty of GOODWILL for the organization & again make it the dream company of many people 5] As the project can be implemented at the Global scale it provides all opportunities for DELL to develop better relationship with the Governments mainly India, France & that of USA which can be made use to obtain plenty of Govt. based projects. Growth of DELL by the start of New Ventures The students who are part of the above project can also be allowed to choose a Global Entrepreneur who will act as their mentor & be allowed to establish a contact with so the student & that Global Entrepreneur can mix their ideas & start a New Venture which will have a Client or a Partnership relation with DELL thus adding to the global growth of DELL. Also once the venture is started the student can be given a position of non- executive director or something & similar position can be taken by the people on the board of DELL to make stronger bonds between the 2 companies.
Extra to Drive home the above project by Dell in India:-
1] The students who are part of this project in place like Bangalore etc., where DELL have their office can be provided with a health program which can consist of -> Height growth stretching exercise : Will mainly promote all around body development -> Sri Sri Yoga & Kriya by Art of Living [in Bangalore this can be conducted by Sri Sri Ravishankar`s sister] -> Some martial arts training : Helps in making strong the mind body coordination -> Running & Cycling : while running will streamline the body teaching each student to cycle will promote DELL as a eco-friendly organization doing their bit to spread global warming awareness -> On weekends the student can be taken to the Art of Living campus to have 1 to 1 interaction with Sri Sri Ravishankar himself. -> Interested students can learn or otherwise use it as a counseling session which can be conducted by GIL BOYNE [http://www.gil-boyne.com/ <http: /> ]– this can be done in a class or individual basis as the need may be. The above all can be done at the DELL campus & the students can be provided free pick up & drop free of charge by the bus plying in places where DELL have their campus however each student can be charged Rs 15,000 for the whole program wherein they can be supplied with gym clothes as well as cycle. The schedule can be charted out such that its carried out between 5 am to 10 am in the morning. Any excess charge that is there can be coupled along with the students fee for the university which will be financed by DELL in return of the above written agreement by the student. 2] Students can be provided with a teaching in Vedic Math which is undertaken by Art of Living, a separate charge for this can be collected from the students. What the above will do is place DELL as a true Indian company as these are special features provided only to students who are part of this project in India & will also add to the goodwill & public image of the company.
Spread of DELL in the Indian society :-
A survey of the neighborhood of the student who is a part of this project can be done covering all building including work places & houses obtaining data the basic data on a individual basis like Name, Age, Home town, Education, Work experience, Mobile number, email id, photo & their signature after which it can be given to the student who is a part of this project. Here the email id can be made a must for in India most have mobile but not email hence the student who is part of this project can select 1 person from a place to come & create an email id for them which can be provided by the in-house bloging division of DELL. The student can also be allowed to select a person from his neighborhood who will act as his local contact apart from his/ her family when away for on campus education. Also a detailed list can be made consisting of data that tells the Social Welfare organization that any person in the neighborhood is associated to & the nature of work it does & the student who is a part of this project can have a short stint in them & see how DELL can help in their performing better when aided. This will not only ensure goodwill for DELL but also ensure that the grants made by DELL will be made the best use off.
The DELL FOUNDATION trustee paying monthly visit to all charitable foundation , NGO & healthcare units as well as some way to run down educational institution in the area [eg: visit the above mentioned places in Jayanagar] from where the students in Bangalore hail from will be of high benefit to DELL in the spread of Goodwill while creating a great impression on the minds of the people & give pride to the current people at DELL.
Another add-on to the whole program can be that each student can be allowed to choose a in house mentor – a DELL employee will improve the public relationship of DELL. Also the students can be allowed to take a autographed snap with the founders of DELL which they will treasure forever.
This will help in developing better relation in the society for the student & will benefit DELL by 1] The student can suggest people to work for DELL 2] The student can make a group from the people in the neighborhood & carry on small works under the Corporate Social Responsibility division of DELL & thus keep the name of the organization alive in peoples mind as well as increase its goodwill. 3] The student can also act as a local agent to gather more ideas for new ventures which can be started Sir most of these ideas came out as a result of my interaction with 2 distance engineering students in Bangalore, India & hence request you to send doubts to me so that I can clarify them for the smooth implementation of the above project as all it needs will be DELL getting into a agreement with ERAU & INSEAD. These students can be contacted / reached via there study center Sri Venkateshwara Educational Trust : 426, 1st floor G.D.Naidu Hall Road, 5th Main, 12th Cross, Mahalakshmipuram, Bangalore – 86. the place is headed by Mr. G Srinivasareddy who by himself is unaware of this idea that I obtained from his student mainly Krishna. Sir here if I might be bold enough I would like it a lot if some one from DELL or by DELL FOUNDATION either at DELL FOUNDATION or the above mentioned address where the students can be asked to come & then all the doubts can be cleared with the face to face, this so for as they are still students & distance engineering ones at that they will be more at ease either at the foundation or the above given address rather then the corporate DELL office. I would also like to request that it would be best if the DELL FOUNDATION trustee could take some time off to look into this matter with at-most attention & least publicity. The place Sri Venkateshwara Educational Trust by itself will also be very useful as a place to gather the student data & process them.
Sir the Education which I seek ERAU & INSEAD will make certain that the leaders produced can head any division at DELL & produce a bright feature too it while in their starting a joint venture between DELL & a Global Entrepreneur will most certainly add to the global image & growth of DELL. Sir I also have some ideas wherein a new dimension can be added to the company by spreading AIDS awareness mainly in place where its much needed as in India. Sir since i have provided a medium via which the student from whom i have obtaned to main core parts of the IDEAs & presented before you so i shall be most greatful if the immediate needed action is taken even if it means the presence of a top Dell official in Bangalore, India to have a interaction with the student so as to clear all the doubts & have a smooth as well as quick implementation of the above, this i ask for sir not because i do not have faith in the Indian officials of Dell but for my thinking that the direct involvement of a top official from Dell will have the above turned into a project & implemented at the earliest without any further delays which can otherwise be avoided. Thanking you sir for taking some time of & going through these ideas which I have sent & most eagerly awaiting your reply & more so the action on the ideas provided. 8 Comments »

Compete with Apple

Advertising and Marketing, Dell, New Product Ideas submitted by daniel117 Feb 1

From my vantage point, I think Dell isn't competing with Apple enough. It's like letting the kids take cookies from the cookie jar, and the takers are Apple's new products and the cookies would be the customers from Dell.
MacBook Air, Apple's new weapon against Dell's XPS notebook product line, challenged Dell by its slim size, the weight, performance, and its wireless connectivity. Hopefully that got Dell a wake-up call. Apple introduced Air at the Keynote Address by Steve Jobs. Of course, Dell can compete easily by the cost, MacBook Air's start at $1799, but the cost of the $500 iPhone didn't stop costumers from buying it. Might be the same case here.

Save Xp!

Operating Systems submitted by dwood Mar 10

For as long as Dell is offering XP as a "downgrade", and M$ attempts to force Vista into millions of user's homes, I propose that Dell reject ANY hardware that does NOT come with DRIVERS that WORK with WINDOWS XP.

This means that ANY system DELL puts out on the market MUST have DRIVERS that work with XP as WELL as VISTA. (We wouldn't mind the same requirements for Linux :P)

Increasing Dells Net Income

Dell submitted by mshawnb Mar 9

As a stock holder in Dell I have been shocked at the depreciation of it in the stock market. Granted I don’t own a lot of stock but I do hold some shares. I also personally own 4 dell computers of my own and have been very pleased for the most part on their performance since the first one I bought 7 years ago. I also have the luxury of using dell computers at work in the military and I also know that at one time the military was giving Dell computers to students who were taking online classes as part of their education program and now some Soldiers receive it as an enlistment option so to see it doing poorly in the stock exchange is sad.

I don’t know how well this idea would go with your board of directors or stock holders that own a great quantity of your stock but to the little guy it could go a long way in boosting your sales and increasing your net income at your years closing. I have not seen this done before so I wonder at how legal it is so if this is not a possibility I understand.

My idea is simple in form but might be more complex in the long term in ways I am unaware of.

Why don’t you make everybody that buys a computer from Dell a stock holder in your corporation?

It could be done simply by giving somebody a ¼ share of stock for a computer that is bought up to $500 and adding another ¼ for each $500 they spend on a computer up to 5 shares of stock options. You can send them a nice certificate with their computer telling them how much their stock is worth at time of purchase and if you want you can include an option when they buy the computer to buy at least 5 stock options at current market value when they are building a computer. I would suggest that you hold the stocks until they have paid off the debt if they use the Dell purchase card since you are not guaranteed to receive reimbursement when they do that. If they don’t want to hold a share of stock in Dell they can simply deny it and use what it would have cost for the stock be applied to their bill of sale.

I can see this working greatly for the Dell Corporation in the whole because if somebody holds a share of your stock then they are more then likely to shop with you more often so that they can do their small part in making what they hold more valuable instead of looking for it cheaper at an outlet store or online at another retail store. With a recession on the horizon and in part actually happening before our eyes in the stock exchange I can see it getting worse before it gets better. People are holding onto their money a little tighter then they were a few years ago and shopping for the better deal in the whole. They want something that they can invest in that will give them a hope for the future.

I know this is a little unorthodox in my approach with this idea but in the whole I really think that by doing this dell could be showing a plus instead of a minus in the long run. If you happen to use this idea and it does as I think it will to boost your annual profit I hope you will remember me with lots of nice stock options.~smiles~
Thank you. 13 Comments »

Take the whole anti-vista resistance thing and exploit it

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by lee_stricklin Mar 4

Windows Vista is arguably (meaning there are people that dispute this) the WORST operating system since Millenium Edition. So keep loading all of the computers with XP until M$ doesn't allow the company to do so and after that start advertising Ubuntu 7.10 systems that are preloaded with lots of good freeware on them and maybe some non-freeware as well. This is a list of software that could be loaded along with the stuff that's included with Ubuntu. I think this would make Linux machines look just as good as (if not better) than Windows:

Default desktop environment: Gnome (included with Ubuntu)
Other desktop environments: KDE, FluxBox,XPDE desktop environment (similar to XP's environment), Xfce, Enlightenment

Freeware games: Cube, Cube 2 (sauerbraten), Armagetron Advance, BZ Flag, Astro Menace, Assault Cube, Nexuiz, Alien Arena, Tremulous, Warsow, Legends(Tribes clone that ROCKS), Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, Neverball / Neverputt, Glest

Non-free software: Pioneer Linux Electricity (Windows Emulator)

Graphics: Kolour Paint 30 Comments »

The Dell Axim PDA is not super-popular, but I think if it moved into the SmartPhone realm (especially in order to compete with upcoming iPhone) then it could pick up some market-share and be a great device for US cell phone providers. 90 Comments »
