Add a New Sales Category with Names not Numbers for Models Sales Strategies submitted by jorge 05/17/07
Create a new category on the Dell website which references current computer models my a name. For example, "The Home Browser", which could point at a low end Optiplex with a small form factor., "The Gamer", could point to a modestly outfitted XPS system, "The Traveler" to a light and wifi connected laptop. Now these named products would only point to a current model but this would allow those novices looking for a specific category of computers which they cannot determine by a model number like OptiPlex 450, or Latitude D820, etc... Dell can even add a sticker with that name (Dell seems to love stickers) to clearly identify it and make the customer happy that they got "The Killer Game Machine" or "The Wandering Traveler". I can provide more names if needed. Make expandible graphics cards for laptops. Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming, Desktops and Laptops submitted by mastercestes 05/07/07
This would make the Laptops just as competitive as the standard Desktop market. And would introduce a new corner of the market for "tinker's" of Laptops. Refine Dell Computer Styling to be More Like Motorola Phones Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by skylarkguy 05/22/07 The 90's are over, but the average new Dell computer looks like the Dell I bought in 1996. The new Motorola RAZR2 is sweet: http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/razr2/experience/default.asp< want that phone just because it looks cool. Why can't Dell incorporate similar styling to laptops and desktops? Think about these features: Sleek aluminum/stainless steel keyboards, hidden speakers, webcams and integrated bluetooth on every computer, stainless steel parts... feel free to add your own suggestions below. 4 Comments » 3000:1 + 2ms Or Better LCDs | XPS Display | Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by thebittersea 05/13/07
Up to date video drivers: ATI requires Dell's permission... Gaming, Monitors and Displays, Service and Support submitted by zorgkang 05/08/07
Dell doesn't bother "forwarding" to us video card driver updates released by ATI. There is an easy solution though and all that Dell has to do is say "ok" to ATI. Please read on. I'm not an idiot, so don't treat me like one! When I call the customer support hotline, I'm tired of being told to "click twice on the that looks like the world behind a brick wall" or something like that. Customer service reps should be able to recognize that if I'm asking, say, what port I need to open to do X or Y, or something of the like, I'm probably not a user who doesn't know how to turn the computer on. Instead, how about "You need to open port *number* UDP and port *number* TCP. Do you know how to do that? Gaming, Monitors and Displays submitted by hjwasson 05/09/07
There are many posts regarding the fact that TrueLife displays are far too reflective for brightly backlit conditions. User responses to the complaints suggest getting a business class display with anti-glare filter - but these displays have not kept pace, are too dim, have poor pixel response rates and often have poor color rendition. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-reflective_coatingI'm sure that Seiko, Hoya, Essilor, iCoat and others would vie for the chance to open up a new market for their coatings, and thus bring more profits to them (and lower costs to us). Some IdeaStorm members might be concerned about scratching the coating - but consider: 1. LCD panels are already prone to scratching, and care must be taken in their cleaning. 2. Modern Anti-Reflective (AR) coatings, with their multiple layers, are far more resistant to scratching than they used to be. 3. AR coatings tend to repel dust, so the need for cleaning would be less frequent. 4. With the use of a microfiber cloth (and mild liquid cleaning formulations when needed), the AR coating and display will remain pristine for many years of service. If you would like to see modern Anti-Reflective coatings applied to TrueLife displays (as an optional upgrade) please promote this post. 6 Comments » 6 major issues to be fixed by Dell Dell, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by jervis961 02/17/07
Dell became a top company by providing choice and customer service to a customer that wasn't available at the time but has since fallen behind the pack in these areas. Needing a translator when calling customer support is unnacceptable and other companies are rapidly passing Dell in technology advancements. While this site is a good start, many things need to be changed for Dell to become the market leader again. Sales Strategies submitted by yank 05/20/07
Plenty of people spend a LOT of time shopping around on Dell's site for a great deal. They trust the brand and haven't the time or interest to build there own PC so when they see a good deal they try and buy that new Dell PC with as few options as they can manage. In my opinion nowadays colors like gray or black are getting too old. Why Dell does not follow other companies like Sony or Apple or the tiny Flybook. People like colors because it expresses their personality, not everybody is a businessman or businesswoman, we like colors. For example white is getting more and more popular but there are other trendy colors out there. Advertise Graphics RAM correctly Advertising and Marketing submitted by joffe100 04/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
When we say we want to buy a 512Mb graphics card we really do want a 512Mb graphics card - not 512Mb with 256mb physical memory with 256mb shared! This is really BAD and misleading advertising - you do not see other RAM memory being sold 1Gb (512Mb physical, 512Mb shared!) Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Gaming submitted by shirk 05/19/07 Stop offering quad core CPU, SLI graphic cards, and terabyte hard drive systems that are limited to older low speed memory. Customers who purchase these higher end systems want their components to be up to date and cutting edge, so drop the ancient 533-667 mhz memory. Also stop crippling motherboards so that they wont support higher speed memory so customers are stuck without a choice. Give customers current memory, 800 mhz and up, for their brand new systems. 2 Comments » Make longer lasting batteries for better portability Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by winoffice 05/05/07 **IN PROGRESS**
Don't make us recharge our laptops' batteries so often! A recent Cnet article (posted at Cnet's news site at about May 5, 2007) explains that Windows Vista's Aero Glass feature gives you less battery life. So, if we want Windows Vista, then we either have to recharge more often, or pay extra for more and better batteries! Instead, make Dell get rid of the batteries which quickly lose their charge...and come up with something that would give us longer battery life as follows (under Windows Vista), without making us stay away from Windows Vista or pay an extra $99 for another and better battery. I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option. Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by agreer 02/17/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle. Operating Systems submitted by javaprog07 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**
Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP. Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ntaylor0909 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**
I read the same question on Linux forums, all the time: What is the best brand of computer/laptop to purchase for Linux. I know that there is the n series of computers and notebooks, but it could go a step further. Accept the recent offer of free Linux driver development from the Linux Kernel Community so that DELLs "just work" with Linux. Maybe look at some ideas like LinuxBIOS and/or OpenBIOS. Become the OEM that everyone recommends. There is a growing market for Open Source friendly computers and DELL could own that market. Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now! track my votes
