Drives replaced with original OS image as a standard hard drive replacement

Operating Systems submitted by david_seachrist 07/17/07

Small business people do not have the time to reinstall the operating system with a tech after troubleshooting to replace the hard drive. MAJOR customer satisfaction would be gained if all drive replacements offered an OS image on the drive. Plug and boot instead of Plug, reinstall windows, reinstall drivers, reinstall windows updates..... 3 Comments »

Real Performance

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by myself 07/17/07

My idea is that rather to focus the product around the processor or *amount* of memory and/or hdd capacity the system should be more balance, for example a super fast intel duo core2 processor @ 2.6 ghz wont do much better on a system that has a generic motherboard and an slow hard drive than a comparatively slow processor like a regular core2 @ 2ghz, i truly believe that a system based on a athlo X2 4200 (or equivalent) running on a good motherboard and a good hdd would do a LOT better than the extremely high-tech new on the market intel eight core triple due super hyperthreading rocket fast with instantaneous technology that is running on a motherboard made of wood and an hdd powered by hamster. 1 Comment »

Alienware Customer Service Treats You Like An Alien

Service and Support submitted by kaiju 07/17/07

About two hours ago I decided to bite the bullet and buy a new desktop. I first went to Dell.com but was dissapointed in my gaming options. Not only is Vista pre-loaded, but XP Professional is not an option. So I decided to go to Alienware. I got the options I wanted and proceeded to checkout, however during the verification process an unsecured item is referenced and the browser pops up asking if you want to display the unsecured item. Sure no problem, however once you've lost focus the page stops loading. No worries I'll use Chat and speak with a customer service representative and finish the order. Then I'm informed there's nothing they can do, and even though the Survey which was emailed to me while still chatting with the rep asks me if they were able to assist me in my purchase I'm informed there is nothing they can do. I go back to the website and see my item is still in the cart and try to fascilitate transaction again, same error. I call Alienware sales and wait for 20 minutes due to seasonal high volume, I don't know what season we're in last I heard x-mas is in December. I speak to a customer service chat again to see if they can assist me in a new order while I wait for 20 minutes on phone. Well they can't do new orders either. Finally I get a human being on the phone and tell an abrieviated version of my story, and ask to complete the purchase. Sorry the order isn't saved, but I have your information I'll be happy to create the order for you. Excellent I say, and walk through the order when low and behold I'm told he can't complete the order because there are two authorization transactions and he has to wait 48 hours.

So here's my brain storm, test your code before you deploy it to ensure even something as trivial as linking an image with http:// instead of https:// doesn't cause your application to fail. Second, provide a cohesive theme for your customer service, if you set my expectation that the chat customer service representative can help complete my order, it is frustrating when not only they can't but act like it is unrealistic for me to expect them to do so. Third, when processing transactions using credit cards which are obviously batched since I have yet the have an authorization on my account provide a method for your customer service people to cancel. Fourth, provide bundles which make sense, having an entertainment desktop which uses Vista when almost all windows platform games are currently using XP; doesn't makemuch sense. Fifth, If I've expressed an interest in spending $3500 I would hope the first level of customer service would express a little more interest in keeping me a customer besides stating thank you for considering alienware. And finally, if I've now contacted by chat multiple times, and telephone to make a purchase offer alternatives other than sorry I can't finish this order. Like I'm sorry sir but do you have another credit card you can use to finish this transaction. Or, I'm sorry sir would you like to use our no interest for a year credit card to finish this transaction. And if all else fails, say I'm sorry for the inconvience, any thing but "thank you for considering Alienware". It's a slap in the face. 3 Comments »

Option to upgrade to 64-bit Vista.

Operating Systems submitted by impulse 07/18/07

All Dell computers have the option to upgrade to to 4GB of ram. However, the 32-bit versions of Vista only support up to 3GB of ram. An option to upgrade to a 64-bit version of vista should be available, as well as notification that 4GB requires the 64-bit OS. 4 Comments »

Make 64-bit Vista the default Vista; sell XP for people who want 32 bit.

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz 07/18/07

There's an idea that 4GB+ computers get 64-bit vista

It's hardly sane to offer all the versions of XP and Vista (32-bit Vista Basic; 32-bit Vista professional, 32-bit Vista business lite, 32-bit Vista business-more, 32-bit Vista Ultimate, 64-bit Vista Basic; 64-bit Vista professional, 64-bit Vista business lite, 64-bit Vista business-more, 64-bit Vista Ultimate, 32-bit XP lite; 32-bit XP professional, 64-bit XP lite; 64-bit XP professional, and then some).

It seems that with the resource needs of Vista, any Vista customer will be upgrading to over 4GB eventually; so does it make any sense to even offer the 32-bit Vista?

The main reason for 32-bit seems to be compatible with legacy stuff; which XP is better for anyway

This Idea is that it would simplify things if you offer
Vista - 64-bit only
Ubuntu - 64-bit only
XP - 32-bit only

pre-install VLC Media Player instead of Windows Media Player

Software submitted by siger 07/18/07

I suggest this beacuse:

- it reads all types of multimedia files
- it's free
-it's open source
- it doesn't need a lot of memory, and a lot of place on the hard disk
- it's easy to use
- it 's popular 16 Comments »

creating DELL sotres to taste dell computers

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by siger 07/18/07

i think selling computers on the net and offering the choice of options is a good idea , but choosing a computer is not like choosing a piece of meat for instance. a computer needs to be tasted, touched, looked, ...

that's i suggest to create places to prensent dell computers. 4 Comments »

Laptops submitted by majortom1981 07/18/07

Please don't sel llaptops unless you have enough for thwe demand. I was sent a defective 1520 .I am awaiting a replacement laptop wich is now delayed because there is no more lcd screens left.

So my suggestion is don't introduce new laptops until you have enough supply for the demand. 7 Comments »

hard drive space

Servers and Storage submitted by cybercheryl 07/19/07

You need to offer the choice of having the recovery info on separate disks rather than the hard drive. You could also help those who have in a partition to copy the info to CDS and then clear the partition. 1 Comment »

Dell remove all special holes and nooks and crannies made for holding Dell logo's and go with all stickers!

Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge 07/16/07

Dell remove all special holes and nooks and crannies made for holding Dell logo's and go with all stickers! This will streamline your production and manufacturing as you will no longer need special holes and gadgets to hold a Dell logo button. Going with stickers makes the computer sleaker and Greener as less resources are needed for a smooth notebook back plate or a desktop front face. This also gives you more surface area to plaster your favorite Dell stickers which you love! ;) (note the extra wink for the love of it, dell mods like winks and stuff like that don't they) 2 Comments »

Make the XPS 410 a Full Tower with better air flow

XPS products submitted by ptcase 07/17/07

Dell, Please redesign the XPS 410 to a full tower with appropiate ventilatation. The optional video cards that are supposed to fit are the Nvidia 8800 GTX. This card is huge. How can Dell even allow us to put in such a great GPU and not provide any more power than a 375 watt power supply with extra fans and cooling vents. I don't even think an 8800 gtx will run on 375 watts. I think it requires a minimum of 400W 12 V rail. How can this great card be an option???
Please add some more features. I don't exactly think that the XPS 710 series are all that good looking.

Here's a suggestion: look @ link below

Put your Windows ads on your Google Appliance pages - or remove them from the Ubuntu pages.

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by jmxz 07/17/07

Dell seems adamant about advertising Windows on their Ubuntu pages; and on not mentioning their Ubuntu computers on their Windows pages - as explained by Dell's response in the comments to this idea: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/71206/

However these Dell computers don't come with Windows but there's no such windows ad there:
http://www.dell.com/html/global/enterprise/index.htm?partnerName=google
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/casestudies/2007_google.pdf
Perhaps Balmer could pay you to put windows ads there too?
