Push SSD in notebooks esp the 1330

Sales Strategies, XPS products, Laptops submitted by 500moldschool 08/15/07

Solid State Drives (SSD) are the way to go. I am in the market to replace my old trusty 500m from 4 years ago. However, I have found few laptops that are really worth replacing my trusty 4.9lb laptop with. Newer laptops are no doubt better, but in the range of the portable non-desktop replacing market I have been disappointed.

Until the Toshiba R500... Come on Dell, push the SSD technology and get a hold of this semi-ultraportable market!!! I mean why pay $500 (THAT'S RIGHT $500!!) for a 32Gb SSD in the 1330 when the R500 (although a little more $) is breathing down your Dell neck with a sub 2lb laptop with a 64Gb SSD? Oh yeah, I know why. B/c Toshiba is directly involved in the evolution of SSD technology. They just dont rely on others to make the drives and then buy them to put in their computers.

IDEA: bring down the cost of the SSD thru aggressive ordering. Send the relatively hefty 13.3 1330 XPS into a truly competitive weight category with the advantage of cost and a nice 13.3 widescreen w LCD technology.

Now that is a recipe I would use and buy right away. Until then, I will use my sub 5lb 500m until it dies. The cost of upgrading to a laptop with little advantage in weight is just not really worth it. We need a refreshing, appealing, non-black box, & AFFORDABLE portable product. 3 Comments »

Offer Warranties for Hours of Usage not years of ownership

Service and Support submitted by badblood 08/16/07

Your service warranties currently last for annual periods. But people will use their computers more or less during this period. You need to make these warranties relevant all of your customers, heavy and light users.

Like car companies that offer warranties for the number of miles driven, you should offer warranties for the number of hours a product has been used.

How many hours would a Dell Warranty last anyway? 5 Comments »

M1730 should look more like the M1330

XPS products submitted by saleemohaib 08/16/07

I saw the pics of the upcoming Dell XPS M1730 laptop. I was really disappointed. I was not expecting something so ugly from Dell. By the way you can view the pics on this link:
Not for the faint-hearted people. Get ready before you go to this link and for those who have seen it before no need to see them again ;)

http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/detail.php?id=2859 I

I also saw the M1330 and it look really nice. I think it might save Dell a lot of time and effort if they just made a 17' version of M1330 and call it M1730. Because I want a Santa Rosa XPS 17' laptop soon :)

I think including a 2 Megapixel camera on the M1730 would also be nice and color choice would be appreciated as available for M1330.

Looking forward to your coments.

By the way 'Dell' really appreciate the IdeaStrom. 27 Comments »

Synergize Dell products with some of Mahatma Gandhi's favourite sayings

Advertising and Marketing submitted by cosh 08/08/07

The new colourful notebooks: You should be the change that you want to see in the world.

The XPS series: Truth alone will endure; all the rest will be swept away before the tide of time.

The Ubuntu N-Series: First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. ("they" referring to Microsoft)

The expensive ones: Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

The business ones: Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.

Tech support: A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption in our work. He is the purpose of it.

[Keyboards] Look for a fix for the "Phantom Key" issue.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming submitted by bbr 08/08/07

Some low-quality keyboards suffer problems when multiple keys are pressed in quick succession; some types of keyboard circuitry will register a maximum number of keys at one time. This is undesirable for games (designed for multiple keypresses, e.g. casting a spell while holding down keys to run) and undesirable for extremely fast typing (hitting new keys before the fingers can release previous keys). A common side effect of this shortcoming is called "phantom key blocking": on some keyboards, pressing three keys simultaneously sometimes resulted in a 4th keypress being registered. Modern keyboards prevent this from happening by blocking the 3rd key in certain key combinations, but while this prevents phantom input, it also means that when two keys are depressed simultaneously, many of the other keys on the keyboard will not respond until one of the two depressed keys is lifted. Better keyboards are designed so that this happens infrequently in office programs, but it remains a problem in games even on expensive keyboards, due to wildly different and/or configurable key/command layouts in different games.

Source for the above text : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_keyboard< if keyboards had a different input or code registering method, or perhaps USB keyboards would be better than PS/2 in this regard.
For example : 1xF3 when a key is pressed,, and 0xF3 when that same key is released, then less codes would need to be sent trough the cable. Either way the current system is obviously flawed.

And yes.. it's quite annoying, especially if you're trying to play games.
With modern keyboards is impossible to play a 2-player game on a single keyboard, while this definitely was possible back in older days.

I remember old day Commodore computers "did not" suffer nearly as much from the phantom key issue / key blocking issue as modern day computers / keyboards do.
I was able to play with 3 players on the same keyboard. (cramped for sure, but still possible)

I'd love to see dell / anyone finally find a solution that would allow more than 3 buttons to be pressed with modern keyboards, and avoid the Phantom key issue. 1 Comment »

Small, cheap laptops without all the expensive features

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bjomape 08/09/07

I noted that one of your competitors is launching a small lightweight laptop with a crappy 7" screen and a tiny flash based disk (4-8GB), running a Linux version adapted for beginners (but still containing tools for linux pros). The interesting point is that you get a small and light laptop for less than $200. Despite the poor specifications, I'm extremely tempted to get one - it would be a perfect complement for my Inspiron when I travel (or actually just for work - it's photography, movie watching, gaming, and other leisure applications that require more performance).

I hope that you'll be able to match this competitor. I would be very happy to sacrifice lots of performance for a laptop of that size and price tag. Comment »

Say No to Microsoft SuSe Linux

Linux, Small Business submitted by dbyte32 08/08/07

Dell is offering Microsoft's SuSe Linux pre-installed in China, and plans to do the same in the US. MicroSoft shouldn't be allowed to profit from Linux. One of the founding ideas of Linux is freedom from Microsoft and this inferior software. 25 Comments »

Streamline the MS tax refund

Sales Strategies submitted by polarwolf 02/28/07

This one is a short and easy one...if Dell doesn't want or can't offer OS-less consumer PCs or laptops, at least make it easier for customers to claim the refund they're intitled to in the Microsoft EULA if they don't accept the terms of the license. 20 Comments »

Travel Monitors

Monitors and Displays submitted by droiii1369 08/08/07

Some of us in the Business Travel World have been spoiled while in the office with having two monitors. At first I was not used to using multiple monitors but now I find it hard to work any other way. My suggestion is for Dell to create a monitor that is as small as a laptop (15 in screen), has a stand that folds into the back of the monitor and a cover for the front. This way the monitor can be taken on the road and all of us who are spoiled with two monitors in the office can take the luxury with us. The ideal monitor would be about the size of a regular laptop so that it could fit in an oversized laptop bag. I think that the travel monitor would be a great success for Accountants, Lawyers, Consultants, etc. who travel and set up work sites at client locations. 1 Comment »

Emerging market: Real Media PC's

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility submitted by tleavit 08/07/07

I'd have to say that most existing large manufacturers are missing the media PC market (HTPC) pretty bad. Dell is. I keep trying to price up a good media PC with Dell and they just don’t exist. They aren’t bad but a lot of people want more and better options. I would classify Dell as "low-fi". You should try out a "Mid-Fi" product. The PS3 as far as a media player is a great solid mid-fi product for cheap and contrary to current media, they have still sold 4 million+ units. Dell should build a media PC that is backed by HD-DVD or Blue-Ray with solid quality HDMI output. Throw in lots of quality sound outputs: HDMI, component, AC3, etc. Make it small (such as SFF) however make it easy to upgrade. Offer built in Wi-Fi and Blue tooth. Most users will probably use media capabilities of Vista Ultimate media player but keep the Linux HTPC buys in mind for drivers. Make it a quality piece to proudly display on a stereo rack with a case that is HT standard and color switchable (like black and silver). It should be able to plug into a quality pre/pro processor with little problems and full compatibility. Offer several good video capture cards. We understand that its not going to be cheap, most quality HT components are not cheap. Include all of the codec’s that one needs right off the bat and support them.
You know, maybe work with some manufacturer like Outlaw Audio, Integra/Onkyo, Yamaha or such to create it.
Maybe make a laptop version with different display options that work in an actual HT rack. 1 Comment »

eSATA in Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Servers and Storage, Laptops submitted by patrickthegreat 08/07/07

Having the ability to boot from the express card slot on a laptop would be a great idea for those that would like to run multiple operating systems on external drives. eSATA through the expess card slot currently alots for 3gb/s data transfer rates, as opposed to the USB 2.0 (480mb/s). An update to the current BIOS would be great, but I doubt we will actually get that, but at least Dell could make this available in future laptops. 6 Comments »

Make A Wireless Dell

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power. 220 Comments »

Latitude D820

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Latitude products submitted by slavinde 08/06/07

Hello Dell, I have carried a Latitude C840 for just over six years now. It has been very good to me but the time came to upgrade my machine. I went with the Latitude D820 and have to say it is an amazing little notebook. I have one serious gripe with it and really would love a solution or a design change to prevent future machines from suffering as this one does.

It is understandable that NO notebook computer can have "amazing sound" , but my C840 produced MUCH MUCH better sound quality. The D820 internal speaker's or sound device must be of horrible design. I Have contacted tech support but clearly the out sourced phone tech's have no idea what I am talking about, and do not understand english dialog so I have had a horrible time trying to find an answer why this machine 3ft from my head is very hard to hear.
