Turn off Vista's indexing service

Operating Systems, Software submitted by jmxz 06/11/07

Vista's indexing service is a drain on resources for customers who prefer a different desktop

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070610-google-launches-antitrust-compl...

Google months ago filed a confidential complaint with the Justice Department, asking that Microsoft be forced to alter Vista's desktop search behavior on antitrust grounds.

The complaint says that Vista's indexing service cannot easily be turned off and creates a drag on system resources when operating at the same time as rival indexers, like the one in Google Desktop Search. Google argues that this behavior is anticompetitive, and several state Attorneys General seem willing to pursue the issue.

Idea: turn it off by default; and let users choose which indexing service they want turned on themselves - either at the time of purchase or when they get the system. 16 Comments »

Take advantage of the "Year of the Open-Source Desktop" buzz.

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by jmxz 06/11/07

2008 May Be the Year of the Open-Source Desktop
[...]
It’s not about being anti-Apple. I respect the user experience of Mac OS X, and I wish Steve Jobs would license the operating system to other hardware manufacturers, who could then offer choices that meet other needs, such as a 2 lb. subnotebook for road warriors.

What this is about is recognizing that the open-source desktop is nearly ready for select desktop users. Dell has begun to offer open-source options for its desktops and laptops.

Dell can be seen as *THE* primary thought leader here -- just as a few years ago IBM claimed the role of Linux-on-the-server-thought-leader (even though, in honesty, Dell was probably at least as strong an advocate of Linux-on-the-server as IBM was -- but IBM wasn't afraid to go out and say it so they got much of the credit).

Dell Marketing: Take the momentum you already have with Open Source Desktops and run with it. 10 Comments »

Dell true mini-sized desktop

Desktops submitted by jerbl 02/17/07

I suggest that Dell design and sell a true mini-sized desktop CPU.
It would be similiar in size, weight and power to the Apple Mac Mini, but with Windows software.
Customers who buy a LCD or Plasma TV also prefer a CPU with a small footprint. 34 Comments »

Better call center software

Service and Support, Software submitted by no2cl 06/12/07

When calling the support center in Belgiqum:

1) I must wait, hear music, ads, and push a lot of buttons...until...

2) I've to give the model & service tag number (server or pc) + name of our company... and a little description of the trouble.

3) wait to be transmitted to the technical service...

4) Give...yes, the service tag number, name, adress, mail adresss..... of our company and explain the trouble!

5) If I call back for the same trouble within the hour or day, i've to start back the same procédure... Booooring! Time-consuming...

Suggestion: why the call center software can't send the service tag, customer name,.... automaticaly to the technical service?! Comment »

Get rid of franchises in the middle east

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by person8012 06/12/07

I live in the UAE and am disappointed with DELL they have franchised themselves to emirates computers who dont let you buy online or even spec out your machine online. Also they sell them to retailers over priced compared to similiar specced US machines they are over double in some cases! Also it would be easy for Dell to sell computers in the UAE as the dollar to dirham rate is fixed! I hope Dell will stop franchising itself like many other buisnesses in the UAE and provide reasonably priced machines. Comment »

Give Microsoft Support in fight over the OpenSource Fiasco

Advertising and Marketing, Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by jorge 06/12/07

Helping Microsoft fight the battle against the rebel OpenSource conglomerate will align Dell with Microsoft letting Dell sell computers with Vista for free or free-er than FreeDOS and Ubuntu! Making computers cheaper for customers! A win-win for Dell!

This will also give Dell the funds to bring in SkyNet! 21 Comments »

Downloadable, PDF format, full technical specs for all systems

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site submitted by benjesuit 06/12/07 **REVIEWED**

Before I buy, I would like to have the options of downloading the full technical specifications of the system. Not just the brief specifications. Place a link under "tech specs" tab that allows you to view or download the full specification PDF file for those of us who care about and understand such things. This way everyone is satisfied.
We are looking to improve the specs pages by making them consistent across all product lines, provide more in-depth specifications and making them available in a printable format.

Case Design

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by mherberii 06/12/07

I work in IT and I deal almost exclusively with Dell products. While they are good machines, the fact that the newer desktops are backwards (they open on the right side, instead of the left) is a source of constant irritation, and has caused me to have to rearrange my entire work area to accomodate it. I think it would save those of us who work on Dell computers a lot of frustration and heavy lifting if things could go back to the way they used to be. 1 Comment »

Dell Stop Selling Printers and Move forward on Becoming Greener!

Environment, Printers and Ink submitted by jorge 06/12/07

Dell Stop the madness and stop selling printers! Printers are a major end cause of major pollution. Printers use toxic inks and toner, in addition to wasting paper and reducing the tree count which is better used for other more appropriate uses. Having other Green movement to plant trees etc. is being negated by continuing to sell printers. Information processed on the computer was meant to stay on computers not converted to paper. 22 Comments »

Same discounts available on Ubuntu and Windows

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jonsmirl 06/12/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I'm ordering a Vista XPS 410 right now. I wanted a Ubuntu one but I'm going to throw away yet another copy of Windows. The Vista XPS 410 has $200 off today and free ship for a total of $869. The identical Ubuntu machine is $1019 plus $29.99 shipping. So today Ubuntu costs $170 more than Windows instead of $50 less. Why can't I have the same discounts on the Ubuntu machine? 50 Comments »

Coat Notebooks in ENDURA Matte Black Foam Rubber

New Product Ideas submitted by reg 06/12/07

Toughbooks and other 'Hardened' laptops come with a rugged, durable foam rubber coating.

Dell should partner with a materials supplier company to come out with a line of 'Rugged DELLs' - Built with a little more extra cost, but tested to survive twice the fall, heat, cold, etc - that a regular laptop would survive. With plastic seal keyboard and waterproof surfaces.

A lot of work environments are very hard on 'standard' equipment, so DELL - do Better.

Make a Rugged Notebook that can stand up to a construction environment. 16 Comments »

linux hardware support

Dell, Linux, Monitors and Displays, Operating Systems submitted by xiandrow 06/06/07

There has been a lot of headway in the Linux support area of computer technology in the last few years. It would be awesome to see Dell lead the pack in general Linux driver support. I would be a more regular customer! The hardware on my Dell Inspiron 1501doesn't fully support Linux. Graphics and Wireless drivers are badly needed. This is a good machine, but Vista just isn't up to par yet. 2 Comments »

Give us the ability to eject a disc from a laptop's drive when it is powered off.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by joeevil5000 06/06/07

I have heard a lot of people asking for a warning that you have a disc in your CD/DVD drive when you power it down. The best remedy for this is the ability to eject a disc even if the laptop is powered off. It would take an extremely minimal amount of power from the battery to pop open a disc drive. If the XPS M1210 can detect wi-fi networks with the power off, something like this shold be extremely simple. 7 Comments »

Avoid business partners like these - you're currently apparently partnered with a company buying and misusing credit card info from another of it's partners (Best Buy)

Dell submitted by jmxz 06/06/07

Idea: Dell - Be careful who you partner with - it reflects poorly on you.

Dell is a very close business partner with the company in the article below who was buying and misusing credit card information of Best Buy customers.

The scary thing to me is Dell has my credit card information and is also partnered with this unethical company!!!.

Dell, Please PLEASE PLEASE don't do similar deals involving my credit card with this business partner of yours. And Dell, for your own reputation, you might want to consider finding alternatives so you don't need to be associated with companies like this in the future. A final idea - could you publicly state that you will NOT share ANY of my information with the company in

http://consumerist.com/consumer/lawsuits/best-buy-attorney-admits-to-falsifyi...

The racketeering case against Best Buy and Microsoft has taken an ugly turn. An attorney for Best Buy has admitted to altering emails that were to be used as evidence in the case. If you're new to this class action lawsuit, Microsoft is accused of paying Best Buy to collect and use customer's credit card information without their permission, signing them up for "free trials" of MSN that they didn't want and or weren't aware existed. When the free trial period was up, MSN began to bill them without their knowledge or consent.
