Ubuntu on all models where it works

Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.

Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft.
We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

Make A Wireless Dell

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power. 220 Comments »

Explain the status tags somewhere

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern 07/20/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

It seems like you just added a whole lot of status tags like "** NOT NOW **" or "** NOT LIKELY **". Could you please add an official list what these wonderfully laconic codes mean? Most codes are of course self-explaining but there's still some uncertainty left.

Thank you.

Make the EC280 available to North America!

Service and Support submitted by jeepee 06/13/07

"Dell have introduced the EC280 desktop computer, a low cost Mini-ITX based PC aimed at emerging markets (i.e. China). The EC280 measures 4.5 litres, comes with Windows XP Home installed and of course consumes just 65W. Power consumption has also been cut back which means the EC280 runs cooler and quieter than conventional PCs."

If Dell want to be the greenest PC company there is, they need to provide us with low cost and low consumption PCs for those who only need a basic PC to surf the internet, write emails, etc.

Dell, please make the extremely nice (and green!) EC280 available to North Americans!

Thanks! 3 Comments »

The Long Life Laptop

Environment submitted by ecogeek 06/08/07

Dell wants to make the most environmentally friendly computer in the world, and I think they can do it. But along with reducing hazardous substances, decreasing power consumption, and making sure machines get recycled, I think Dell needs to make a commitment to reduce their machines trash rate.

Through a variety of steps, including easy upgrades, prolonged warranties, built-to-last design, and an optional five-year, low-cost refurbishment plan, Dell could keep computers out of landfills by keeping them in the hands of consumers.

With today's level of technology, there's no reason why Dell can't produce a machine that works well for double or triple the typical life of a typical laptop.

I propose Dell designs a Long Life Laptop, which will be marketed to folks who don't need high-end processing, but want a computer that give them an excellent return on their investment for many years to come. 1 Comment »

High Efficiency Power Supplies

Environment submitted by hammerstyle 06/07/07

I applaud how Dell is moving towards being a greener entity in not only it's own internal business but in also the products it sells. One move that would certainly result in a greener and more efficient computer system would be to start using high efficiency power supplies that adhere to the strictest energy efficiency rules and guidelines set out by the California Energy Commission and EU Energy. Furthermore, if Dell were to standardise on using this technology for all systems and not just for systems sold in the USA or the EU member nations, it would also have tremendous economies of scale in terms of production. 1 Comment »

Add A123 batteries to xps notebooks

Laptop Power submitted by johnpro 06/15/07

I have a laptop that is 3 years old but my battery has only 30 % capacity left on it. My laptop also has 596 charge cycles on it. A123 batteries have a life span of 1000's of cycles. Also these batteries would decrease charge times from 2-3 hours down to 10 -15 minutes. Lastly, the batteries have more watt hours for extended run time.

Save energy: Beep when your battery is full

Environment, Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by pkchen 06/11/07

I know a lot of people who when charging their laptops, leave the laptop plugged in even after the battery is fully recharged. This definitely wastes a lot of power!

Maybe Dell could build in an alert system (a kind beep every 30 minutes maybe?) to remind the user that their battery is full and they can unplug their notebook from the wall socket.

I know that Nokia is going to be building in this same functionality into some of their cell phones ... check the press release: http://www.nokia.com/A4136001?newsid=1125979"Nokia has launched the first mobile phones to include alerts encouraging people to unplug the charger once the battery is full, a move that could save enough electricity to power 85,000 homes a year."

Think of all the power we could save with just a simple beep! :)

Next step: most systems should have a choice of OS, including Linux

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by phubert 05/24/07

First step: offer Linux on -specific- systems
NEXT step: offer a CHOICE of OS on MOST systems

CHOICE is GOOD! Wouldn't it be SIMPLER FOR DELL to provide the same options for each class of system? So, a drop-down list of OS choices?

ONE web page for EACH model of system. SAME format for EVERY page! 18 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Check out the white LED backlights on the <ahref>XPS M1730.

I love DELL screens - just keep the good quality!

Monitors and Displays submitted by l-roy 06/11/07

I just wanted to say "thumbs up!" for the great monitors. I hope that DELL
keeps the quality above all others. (which won't be too hard when you look at the Apple Cinema displays ;) 2 Comments »

Laptop Fans

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by davew 02/18/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Heat rises! Get the exhaust ports off the bottom of the laptops where it just blows back up into the machine. Put them out the side or the top and everything including processors, drives, batteries and the cooling systems themselves will run cooler and more efficiently. I already burned out one mother board, which thankfully was replaced under extended warrantee. I am so protective now that I never use my laptop without a supplemental cooling pad underneath, which blows the air out the sides. Unless this changes I would think twice about buying another or recommending a Dell laptop to anyone else without advising them of the problem.

JUST SAY NO TO VISTA BASIC.

Operating Systems submitted by ptcase 06/13/07

DELL,
Please don't sell Vista Basic as the base OS if you recommend a better version of Vista. Customers don't want to be frustrated by having a BASIC experience just after they just spent $$$$ on your products. Customers are smarter than you think. cross them once, they will be very leary of repeat business. Cross them twice, yo can kiss future customer loyalty out the window. 2 Comments »

Fully Upgradeable Laptop

Laptops submitted by badblood 05/19/07

Produce a Laptop where everything can be upgraded. Asus is doing it - and here it is:

You name it: Processor, LCD, hard drive, memory, graphics card, optical drive -- take the old one out and put a new component it, all within minutes. The notebook is designed around the core principle of it being easy to upgrade.

Maybe you already have a flexible computer like this one? 9 Comments »

More RAM!

Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

Offer the new Nvidia 8700m GT graphic card on your new Inspirons

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by benjesuit 06/14/07

The preliminary specs of your new Inspiron 1710 & 1510 system only lists the Nvidia 8600M chipset as that was what Nvidia released at the time.

Recently Nvidia released the 8700M GT chip with the following improvements over the 8600M series:

"Packed with the same 32 stream processors (unified shader engines) as the previous generation 8600M GT, the new 8700M GT boosts the core clock from 475MHz to 625MHz. The shader clock has also been increased from 950MHz to 1,250MHz and the memory clock has increased by 100MHz (from 700MHz to 800MHz). The memory bandwidth is up from 22.4GB/s to 25.6GB/s and the texture fill rate provides an impressive 10 billion instructions per second (up from 7.6 billion instructions per second in the 8600M GT)."

Please don't make this chip exclusive to the XPS line. 2 Comments »

NICE New Dell montor! Keep making great designs like this.

Monitors and Displays submitted by jmxz 05/18/07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...

Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this. 41 Comments »

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.
