Im not Feeling the serious-ness of your TWO Ubuntu lines

Linux submitted by dwood 11/11/07

seriously, Dell, I found the computers you offer to come with Ubuntu a joke. seriously, no one is going to want to even try Ubuntu with the way you advertise it on your site.

I dont find how you guys can actually be taking Ubuntu seriously with the way you guys sell it.

On customization of the ONE Ubuntu laptop:
First off, changing the color on a laptop, should be included in price, because its just the back of the laptop screen thats changing, not the entire laptop.

Why cant I select more kinds of processors? three isnt exactly overwhelming me. Wheres Amd? you dont even let them compete with Intel in that sector? Also, those Intel Processors are junk compared to whats really out there.

About the support section:
IF we didn't customize the computer we would not be getting hardware support? WHAT? and it costs $275 to get any better support?
Ubuntu 7.04 is the only one you offer? what if I wanted 7.10? whats up? I thought you guys were supposed to constantly update your site.

I also noticed under the little asterisk the following:
"pricing, shipping & handling and monthly payment information is subject to change without notice"
So if I payed 25 monthly it could go up to 50 a month *without* notice?

On display: 14.1" for Ubuntu is kinda wimpy. where are my options if I was going with Ubuntu?

On graphics card: ONLY an INTEL graphics embedded card? what the heck? are you guys REALLY serious about Ubuntu?

On Memory: Its okay. cant complain there.

On HDD's What if I want an 80GB HDD but more RPMs? I have to get a 160 GB HD drive to get 7200 rpm's ($100 more than the 5400 rpm one)

Your optical drives are WI-MPY 24x for (CD) R is stupid, but it can only READ DVD's? 6x for a DVD-RW with Dual layer RW? bull. my drive cost 50 dollars. and it can do all that at 46x Write, 52x Read

Only an Intel wireless device? thats still Bull. you know, it would be nice if you guys actually showcased their competitor's Wireless devices.

Your batteries are okay there.

Better sound card choices would be GREAT!.

I might as well buy another computer than get your 4 yr warranty.......

I find it funny how you guys give away free recycling kits with your computers.....

As last, wheres an integrated webcam? an option for one of those would be cool.

I know, after looking at the choices for open source Dell is not serious about Ubuntu but I am and I know millions others are (up to 30 million)

Give us more powerfual choices in customizing and other pcs.

to see where I got this info look here: here 9 Comments »

XPS M1530.. 4LBS: FANTASTIC, 8600GS: YUCK, 2GB: ehhh?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by jtanwanteng 10/08/07

15.40-inch display (CCFL up to 1680 x 1050, LED up to 1440 x 900)
Core 2 Duo options from 1.5GHz (T5250) up to 2.6GHz (T7800)
Crestline GM/PM 965 chipset with up to 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
GeForce 8400M or 8600M GS options (up to 256MB)
Slot-loading Blu-ray / 8x DVD±RW
Options for 802.11a/b/g/n, WWAN, Bluetooth
HDMI, VGA, 1394, ExpressCard, (3) USB 2.0, Ethernet, fingerprint reader, media reader
2.0 megapixel (with CCFL) or 300k (with LED) cameras
Weight supposedly 4 pounds to start (which is pretty light, we're assuming that's sans battery)"

4lbs with a 8600GT, GDDR3 would be an Extinction Level Event for Apple and HP and IBM and all your competitors. I heard that you might only support up to 2gb of RAM? doesn't bother me, but I can see how other people might care.

seriously thought.... 8600GS is an embarassment for an XPS product. Even your Vostro has an 8600GT option. Willing to sacrifice some battery life and an entire pound (so you are now at 5) for the 8600GT. Please make it an option and clarify the rest of the specs for us. THANK YOU! 1 Comment »

Michael Dell, shut down Dell and give money back to shareholders...

Dell submitted by mugunth 10/29/07

If Dell does not like(or know) to innovate..., atleast copy Apple... Build an iMac.
A desktop PC that is clutter-free, cable-free, wifi enabled, built in webcam, slot loading dual layer dvd drive and mainly, no trialware/malware or junkware...
If you can't... Michael Dell, shut down Dell and give money back to shareholders...
Ten years has changed a lot...
http://www.news.com/Dell-Apple-should-close-shop/2100-1001_3-203937.html
If you can't compete with a company that you would have shut it down..., accept your defeat... or build us a iMac... with either Windows Vista or Ubuntu...

Headphone jacks in all speakers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by bernard_marx 07/25/07

In a business environment it is often important to have speakers for some uses, but there are other times when people are just listening to music, and therefore shoulkd be using headphones so as not to disturb others. The Dell A225 speakers, which seem to be the main option these days do NOT have a headphone jack.

Please create a line of speakers that do have a headphone jack.

Buy Amiga; Buy Commodore

Dell, New Product Ideas submitted by badblood 09/11/07

Buy Amiga, revive it, breath new life into it. Bring back the Commodore line of products. Do it for us, do it for the industry. You know there are people who don't even know what the Commodore 64 is anymore.

Dell BUYBACK or Exchange Offer!

Sales Strategies submitted by sidharthg 08/08/07

To keep customers loyal and to keep them coming back, Dell should offer an exchange offer or a dell buyback offer. Which may be applicable to the Dell users only. If a current dell customer wants to upgrade to a new dell laptop, then dell should buy back the old laptop and subtract the price for it from the new laptop. This will have multiple benefits:
1. This will keep customers in Dell family.
2. Offer better value to customers.
3. Propel new customers into this package.
4. Old laptops can be refurbished and be sold again at cheaper prices or be donated to poor countries in exchange for a good brand image.
5. Keep the cost of new machines lower for old customers, thereby luring them into purchase.
6. Making a brand switching a costlier affair.

Think Dell. 2 Comments »

PLEASE Dell research some cute robots like Honda's ones

Dell, New Product Ideas submitted by cosh 07/12/07

Those little guys are so cute. But their focus is on advanced mobility. I don't think much of their interaction skills. In a world where computers are supposed to be so great and everything, can Dell do better than ASIMO? Something nimbler and more responsive.

I would adopt one in a trice. >.<

You already have:

- The Money
- The Infrastructure

Although, you don't have:

- Roboticists (although you have researchers in valuable contributing fields)
- Cognitive scientists
- Microelectromechanical engineers

So get hiring. 1 Comment »

Customer

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by f5bphoto 04/10/07

I would like to see the "ON/Off" switch to auxiliary speakers (ie Altec Lansing or comparable) Mounted on the keyboard or monitor. I am 85 years old and I dislike getting down on my hands and knees to turn it off and on. At some locations it was under my work desk. You need to pay more attention to desires of older users. All PC's in general have catered too much to the young with useless frills. I am using my 3rd new Dell in 12 years of computer experience. I do my own investments and photo work on my 8300. The 3 year warrantee expired on November 14, 2006. I plan to purchase again when MS puts out it's first major update to Vista. 2 Comments »

DVI ports on notebooks and tablets

Laptops submitted by sjss 02/21/07

With modern monitors and equipment shifting more and more towards DVI connections, and the fact that a DVI to VGA convertor is trivially obtained, but there are no VGA to DVI convertors easily obtainable, it makes sense to move notebooks to DVI. Those with VGA monitors can still easily connect them to their monitors, and those with DVI monitors will be able to use their monitors as well. 5 Comments »

Multiscreen laptop

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by deflansb 07/22/07

I think Dell (or somebody) should design a multiscreen laptop... The idea is that it will open like current laptops, but once it is open a 2nd and 3rd screen will fold out from the main screen to the right and left (so the main screen will be in the middle)... As both a application developer and an avid gamer, I find having 3 screens on my desktop PC a huge time saver and with laptops becoming more powerful and more common it only makes sense to bring this feature to the portable world... 1 Comment »

Linux Linux Linux, ok now that ive got your attention, Integrated FM transmitter for notebooks.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Laptops submitted by chewd 07/12/07

Why not offer an integrated FM transmitter for notebooks? Theres no good solution to the problem of tiny speakers in notebooks sounding like crap. If we had FM transmitters in our notebooks we could just use any FM radio as our speakers. Radios are everywhere, its a no-brainer really. It wouldnt add much cost to the machine (my USB FM transmitter cost me $30), It wouldnt require any drastic redesigning of the machine and would add a TON of flexibility. And it would work in linux!

Nobody offers this option yet, ive checked, Dell would be the first to offer this incredibly useful feature, why you could even patent it & then charge all the other manufacturers royalties when they start adding it to their machines. And it would work in linux!

I use the griffin FM rocket, it works up to about 30 feet away, doesnt interfere with wifi singals, and sounds great on the car stereo. It doesnt work in linux, as it acts as a USB soundcard & nobodys bothered writing linux drivers for it. Ive tried others that simply plug into the headphone jack, but those take batteries. Dell could make theirs transparent to the OS by just feeding the existing soundcard signal into it & using the notebooks battery power to transmit. And it would work in linux! 3 Comments »

Give costumers a reason why Dell recommends what it does

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by sakuramboo 07/08/07

I would like to see exactly WHY Dell tells me that it recommends one option over another. Why does Dell recommend 1 Gig of ram over 2 Gigs or 512 Megs of RAM, for example? Show us comparisons with in depth analysis as to why I should go with one set of options over another. 4 Comments »

"Longhorn Reloaded" sounds like an interesting OS - perhaps Dell can resurrect the project.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/23/07

From a new CNET article:
http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-9733407-7.html

the "Longhorn Reloaded" project, an effort to continue development of an early version of Windows "Longhorn," the precursor of Windows Vista.

The programmers wanted to keep working with an early version of Longhorn, which still had features, such as WinFS, that were later cut.
Another article on the project: http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=530< sounds like it is (was?) an interesting project. More interesting than Vista, anyway - since Vista apparently dropped the interesting Longhorn features but apparently kept the Longhorn bloat.

Yeah, I know Microsoft's trying to shut it down; but if an important customer like Dell expresses interest perhaps they'll let it continue.

Make Dell online purchasing system more HONEST

Dell Web Site submitted by litsl 03/15/07

I spent 3 days last week choosing my Dell. It was painful. Not because I couldnt find what I wanted but because each different deal has different options. So, if I choose an E1505 I could choose from a range of additional screen options but the E1707 did not have these as options. This is an easy example - there were many more.

On the Inspiron ranges on offer, the cool looking Kensington stands were $129 but on other Dell deals they were around $100.

If you offer me 10% off a package, please dont think you are fooling me if you jack up the price of individual components on offer.

It would be nicer if your online purchasing system was just fair, honest and plain. That way I wouldnt have just wasted 3 days trying to work through options when I already knew pretty much what I wanted. 4 Comments »

Dump Microsoft

Dell submitted by webmaster5 03/14/07

Dell should abandon Microsoft because all that their doing is taking overs OEMS one at a time by restricting them from selling any other software besides their own. If you ask me i think Gates should be thrown in prison for life for doing that. And just some advice for Dell...stop preinstalling Microsoft Software, all that they give a [profanity removed by moderator] about is making money. They don't give the slightest [profanity removed by moderator] about their customers. You'll thank me once your dirty rich form all of the Linux PC's you've been selling. 1 Comment »

dell tabula rasa

Broadband and Mobility submitted by walkerjian 07/10/07

i would really love a dirt cheap, bog simple picture/pdf/movie player. About a4 size, or paperback if fold able. Sorta like a big picture frame but can handle pdf/opendoc, and has sd/cf/usb/(wireless?) connections.

GOT TO BE CHEAP though, and be good on the battery.

I don't want a fancy pants mega expensive tablet megadeath overkill device. It would be good if you could scribble and draw into it - but it MUST BE CHEAP!

It could usher in whole new lines of devices whose whole purpose in life is to feed off cheap memory cards and cheap SOCs 1 Comment »

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by gferrigno 06/06/07

In an effort to remind customers of Dell's commitment to the Green movement, Dell should color all Desktops and Notebooks green. The change will be dramatic enough to get people's attention. 2 Comments »
