Dell invent a standard "port customization" form factor for notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by lorax1284 09/17/07

There seem to be a lot of threads for users asking for specific types of ports on computers... all tolled, there's simply not enough room on a computer for all the different ports that would be required.

It seems there's an opportunity here for Dell to come up with a notebook PC line that has totally configurable ports for everything that's built-in to the motherboard.

Think of it like the toppings on a pizza.

Me, I'd want PS/2 Keyboard (not mouse), 9-pin serial, Full-size firewire (rather than 'mini'), eSATA, 4 USB, 5.1 ANALOG surround.

I accept that the video card / subsystem is on a separate card but if that was available in multiple flavours, I think that would be an asset, too.

Of course I expect to pay a premium for this configurability. If I could get a notebook tricked out with EXACTLY the ports I want... and in a few years, when my old IBM keyboard gives out, swap out that module for another 2 USB ports... well, wouldn't that be swell!

I guess it's just a matter of seeing how much of a premium people would be willing to pay for this. 7 Comments »

Put wheels on the bottom of PC cases (as an option of course)

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by badblood 09/10/07

Put wheels on the bottom of PC cases (as an option of course). Mag wheels, alloy, spinners, chrome, gold or just plain shopping trolley plastic wheels. Put wheels on the bottom to make it easier to wheel in and wheel out the PC case when you're changing all the bloody cords at the back.

LED and OLED displays

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by mike2912 09/14/07

I would like to see more of the laptops and even desktop screens utilise the LED sisplays. The colors are richer and they consume a lot less power. The XPS 1330 is excellent so why not spread the technology to the rest of the products. 1 Comment »

Dell is in a dire need of a COMPLETE image refresh

Advertising and Marketing, Laptops submitted by mentalman1369 08/15/07

Dell is in a dire need of a COMPLETE image refresh.
Dell needs to completely change the way the general public view their products and services (the only way Dell can repair the damage it has taken to its customer base).
Current opinion of computer users, from casual users to enthusiasts, regard many Dell products (notebooks especially) as ugly, cumbersome beasts. Many users find the sole reason they but a Dell is for its low prices and value. But even this reason is fading, as price-drops from competitors force buyers to consider other brands and deter users from Dell's sometimes truly ugly designs. Modern consumers now pursue sleek and elegant designs in almost everything they buy, and this applies to computers. Dell must re-innovate and redesign their computers to rouse the attention of ALL computer users (the new Inspirons look a little better due to their colour, but their fundamental design is still cumbersome and "brick"-like). This way, customers will choose Dell products to others because of its desirable looks AS WELL AS its low prices and understated customer service. Dell has the ability to engineer amazing products which have great functionality and practicality, but if the presentation of these products is not up to scratch, people will dismiss what lies within.
The XPS M1330 is a great first step (including adding small extra touches such as the remote, fingerprint reader, touch controls and WLED screen), and Dell MUST continue this trend of designing objects of pure desire if they wish to become market dominant (and even adding more, like backlit keyboards, adaptive display brightness, etc.). Dell cannot seem to be lagging behind other companies in product aesthetics (adding different colours to laptops simply ISN'T enough to attract the attention Dell needs and deserves), for this is what general consumers see representing company. Dell needs to start imitating other companies who are promoting their products by making everything to do with their company and products attractive (though using spin doctors similar to those employed by HP (who create laughable and senseless adverts) is NOT recommend). However, it is important that new computer designs DO NOT compromise on functionality or integrity of the product (e.g. cases should be strong but still attractive (problems like the M1330 paint debacle must first be overcome, of course)).
It is imperative that Dell improves on the way they project themselves to the general public (a good recent example is Jeff Clarke's outfit while unveilling Dell's new amazingly thin Latitude tablet (a professional business unit): that outfit really isn't great for Dell's general image (even if the video won't be view by the general public, and no personal offense intended, Mr. Clarke)). Dell should unify the image of its products and services, designing sleek and elegant computer cases, advertising its excellent customer service and promote itself in a more prominent way, such as opening more Dell Kiosks, a new logo and the like.

Dell, it's time for action! 13 Comments »

Switch to New Lithium-Sulfur batteries: Carries a longer charge, double the lifetime, Environmentally friendly, no toxic heavy metals, cheaper to produce, lighter weight

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by reg 06/10/07

Recharge Lithium-Sulfur over and over again. Sulfur is cheaper than heavy metals, and friendly to the environment. No toxic metals, and also better performing in colder temperatures. Lithium-Sulfur batteries also weigh less than Lithium Ion batteries.

More Power, Lower Costs, Safer for the environment, Easier to carry:

Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Make Systems Easier to Upgrade

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Desktops and Laptops submitted by aikiwolfie 09/13/07

Having just watched the instructional video for the Dell XPS 700 motherboard exchange program I have come to the conclusion that Dell systems design has gone bonkers.

Why for example is the front panel I/O connector at the back of the board? Granted if it's a genuine Nvidia board there might not be much Dell can do. But these things have to be looked at. I can remember when front I/O panel connectors were at the front of the board. But those were on ATX boards. Perhaps it's the pants BTX layout that's at fault.

It would also be helpful to be able to to remove both sides of the chaise. This would make the system far more accessible.

While it is useful to have some integrated features on the main board like USB and network connections there is zero benefit to having integrated sound on a system board for something like an XPS system. That particular feature just ends up being duplicated by a more advanced sound card like the Sound Blaster X-Fi.

Removing duplication makes the board layout less crowded and would possibly allow for the board to be smaller. Which equals easier installation. If we could save just half an inch on the size of the XPS motherboard, life would be so much easier.

Removing duplicated features would also make the BIOS simpler. Simpler software is generally more reliable software.

I would also say more thought needs to be put into the routing of those cables that do need to go from the back to the front of the system. Again on the XPS system the IDE cable is routed behind the PSU and SATA HDD bays. On my particular system the cable was just to short for this rout and was subsequently unusable until I re routed it. Which was no easy task as everything in the upper portion of the chaise needed to be removed.

It might also be a good idea to drop IDE and FDD support altogether. I personaly only used the IDE connector when experimenting with some Linux installations and discovered the best option was to use an external drive. FDDs if required also come in external USB form. Dropping support for legacy devices would further help save space on the main board and further simplify the BIOS.

These ideas are applicable across the entire Dell range. I've only used the XPS as an example because that is what I have at my disposal. 6 Comments »

Laptop Screen that Rotates

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by badblood 09/06/07

Widescreen laptops are nifty for watching movies, yet they are rubbish for writing documents.

On selected laptops make it possible to rotate the monitor - like the picture below - to make it easier to work.....

Thanks

Better Notebook sound and features

Laptops submitted by foxx 02/17/07

I was looking for a high end notebook for video editing. Every Dell model I looked at was missing something essential.

Most serious is the lousy sound. I can understand for low end notebooks, but high end need A REAL SOUND CARD. I would have been willing to buy a sound card, but that required a PCMCIA slot and you had elimintated those. I gave up.

14" xps notebook

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by jtanwanteng 09/11/07

1" thin, 5lbs or less and a geforce 8600m gt with real GDDR3. 1440x900 or better and you'll have a ridiculous winner on your hands. Make a 15" variant too if you want (to compete with the macbook)

note that IBM hasn't released a widescreen t61p 14" and ASUS fans are still mourning the death of the w3j line.

Honestly, does dell always want to be known for the most bloated notebook designs and play second fiddle to Apple? make something sleek AND powerful. The XPS m 1330 was a good start (still too thick... see the sony SZ)

I have high hopes for the return of Michael Dell... he started in his garage making computers and i'm sure that spirit of innovation is still hiding in there somewhere 8 Comments »
