Make Physical Manuals An Option

Environment, Service and Support submitted by joyscant1980 Jun 25

This is not my idea, it was mentioned by roguent in "No more plastic wrap, please" on June 12. Where I disagree with the idea of no manuals, I do agree that if you do not want to receive the physical manual, you should not have to.

I honestly would love to have a manual that I can hold in my hand because if I can't get onto the internet to use the website, I will still be able to access the manual. But I know I am not like everyone so make it an option to forego the manuals or even choose the type of manual you want, if you want the physical manual or do you want it as a .pdf document on your desktop.

If you are going to have the option to forego the manuals, have receiving the manuals as the default and have the customer deselect it so to avoid persons not getting the manual when they wanted it. Comment »

Instant-on PC

Desktops and Laptops submitted by drackham Jun 20

Think how much energy would be saved if PCs were functional as soon as they were turned on - just like a PDA. Users would then turn the PC off when it was not required - rather than leaving it on just in case it might be needed. It would also save a lot of time. 5 Comments »

Give us a Graphics Card on OpenSource Computers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by kanste Jun 21

Do you want the OpenSource arm of Dell computing to fail? At least put together a little more competitive package with a decent selection of Graphics Cards and Audio Cards. That's the whole point of buying an Ubuntu computer from you. You do the hard work of figuring out what hardware works well on Linux and we get to pick and choose our tailored setup. Only offering an Integrated Intel Graphics Processors and Integrated Audio will not do. It's frustrating because i want to buy a Linux computer now but you have a terrible selection.

Oh and it's almost July 2008 now. Ubuntu 8.04 has been out since April so how about including the new version on your Linux Systems.

Don't pretend to support the Linux community when your not putting in any effort. 8 Comments »

Change you logo to a symbol of some type

Advertising and Marketing, Dell submitted by badblood Jun 24

Because the Dell logo is made up by the word 'Dell' it is difficult to translate or be recognized by non-Latin-alphabet reading people. Also it is difficult to keep it the right way up on laptop computer lids.

So how about Dell take a leap and develop a logo that is a symbol, rather than a word. A symbol that can be identified by anyone, in any language, and no matter which way your computer lid is pointing?

How about it...... 11 Comments »

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Please make Ubuntu XPS Notebook cheaper than XPS Vista Notebook

Linux, Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by dki May 26

Hi,
I have tested the price of the default Vista-Notebook XPS M1330 (in Germany) and the Ubuntuversion with the same Configuration. The result was amazing :(:

Vistaversion: 909,00 €
Linuxversion: 923,44 €

Is Vista cheaper than Ubuntu?? I can not imagine.

So my wish: Make Ubuntu-Laptops competitive! 19 Comments »

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Stop Spying on Your Customers

Printers and Ink submitted by signedupinjuly 07/15/07

Dell laser printers, along with many others, print a matrix of faint yellow dots that will let your documents be tracked! You might think that printing a document is your own damn business, but Dell is making sure that it can be traced back to YOUR printer. Reference: Is Your Printer Spying On You?

dots
Close up of actual tracking dots, taken through a microscope

Dell, step up and a) Make this public. At the very least, OWN UP to spying on your paying customers, and b) Allow people to turn this intrusive bug off. Stop playing with Big Brother. 15 Comments »

Bluetooth enabled printers

Broadband and Mobility, Printers and Ink submitted by yvan 08/17/07

The technology is out, Bluetooth has demostrated to be a reliable and fast way to transmit data. D-Link even has a bluetooth printer adapter that sells for $99. Why not make a photo/laser printer with a built-in bluetooth adapter.?

Less cables, less weight for shipping, less space for packing and ability to share the printer without having a network (and a print server) setup. 1 Comment »

Ordering on-line or on the phone

Service and Support submitted by bc45238 08/03/07

I recently placed an order for ink for my printer. I first went into the web sight but cancelled the order when you asked for my social security number to place the order. I then called on the telephone and again I was asked for my social security number. Do you not realize that giving out your social security number is a dangerous thing to do. Most places will settle for the last 4 digits, however, you insist on having the full number. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!! Unless you change your methods of security for an order I will be forced to purchase a different printer, one which I can go to a store and purchase my supplies. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR YOU TO INSIST ON PEOPLE GIVING OUT THEIR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER TO THE MULTITUDE OF PERSONNEL YOU HAVE WORKING FOR YOU AS THEY COULD POSSIBLY COMMIT IDENTIFY FRAUD. AND I AM NOT WILLING TO GIVE IT OUT THE NEXT TIME I NEED SUPPLIES. I will check it out and if you still insist on the entire SS#, I will stop dealing with Dell. Thank you. Please Dell, if you give us something for free, give something good

Printers and Ink, Sales Strategies submitted by j.bandringa 05/04/07

Recently, I bought a Dell computer and got a 725 Printer with it for free. I found out that there is only one cartridge in it for both black and colour printing. Now after some printing my prints turn from black into brown into red. I also have to buy a new (color) cartridge very often. Of course these cartridges are only for sale at Dell. I do not like to be locked in!

1. Please Dell, if you give me something for free, give something good. Give a quality printer or give me just a cheaper computer.

2. Please, do not sell or include printers with only one cartridge for both colour and black/white printing.

3. Finally, also start selling printers with standard cartridges, that you can buy anywhere. Give us freedom of choice!

Dell Stop Forcing Printers down Customers Throat

Dell, Environment, Printers and Ink submitted by jorge 07/20/07

Dell you want to be Greener and a better company, yet you force your European customers to receive a tree killing, toxic ink using printer!

Stop forcing customers to receive computer accessories they do not want or need! How about an option of something they need versus something you think they need? Definitely a product that does not cost more to maintain! 3 Comments »

Make the inclusion of a printer with a system optional.

Printers and Ink submitted by trippynet 07/20/07

Many Dell laptops and PCs ordered in the UK currently force a cheap printer into the deal by claiming that it's "included in price". However, not everyone wants a printer, even if its free. Quite a few people don't want one - especially with laptops. From the comments about this idea, it appears that de-selecting the printer is possible in America, but not in Britain.

I recently wanted a laptop for traveling and definitely did not want a printer. I also didn't want to generate unnecessary waste by immediately throwing the printer away. I ended up being forced to abandon Dell and shop elsewhere in order to buy a laptop that didn't come bundled with accessories I wasn't had no use for.

I also know of at least 2 other friends who have been put off buying other Dell products due to the forced inclusion of a printer that they had no use for.

By all means include the printer in the price and make it the default option, but please Dell, give us a choice so that we can de-select the printer if we want. 16 Comments »

Every printer should duplex! (two sided printing)

Environment, Printers and Ink submitted by one4spl 07/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

As an environmentally aware company that makes long shelf-life products (not food or toys) you should be aware that the biggest environmental impact your products have are the results of their use, not their manufacture.

Towards this end all your printers should duplex as standard, and if taken to the extreme the drivers should be set to duplex by default.

They should also go into a very low power state shortly after going idle.

Cheers,

Luke

We offer this capability in some printer products. We constantly seek improvements printers. Thanks for your great suggestions.

Hemp-based printers: hemp paper and hemp ink

Dell, Environment, Printers and Ink submitted by reg 06/24/07 **NOT NOW**

HEMP is an environmentally-friendly replacement for killing trees for paper, and also makes a wonderful source of naturally safe organic Ink.

DELL can partner with Hemp Nation to develop and deliver a 100% hemp 'paper' printing, hemp ink using, high speed printer.

DELL can feature new hemp-based biodegradable notebooks, hemp paper printers, and hemp printer ink in the hemp.com eco - marketplace.

Save the trees and create low cost sources of printing materials at the same time.

Some news about hemp. Some facts about hemp.

Compatiblity

Linux, Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by omaha 02/20/07

Make all Dell pc's linux and vista compatible.
Make all Dell printers and xtras linux/mac/vista compatible.
If components or systems doesn't work with both/all, dont sell it.

Then Dell will be a major force in compatiblity progress - it will sell like danish pastry!

Avoid preinstalled software. ( Some - like Norton 2007 is a nightmare to get rid of)

Provide a more or less universal DVD with all optional software. When customer inserts the DVD - Auto check it by using eg serial number - grey out what the customer didn't buy. The rest is a customer's CHOICE. Comment »

Printer Driver Downloads

Dell Web Site, Printers and Ink, Service and Support submitted by gdborenstein 10/18/07

The Dell printer drivers from the support site prompts you for a download of the full CD in a self-extracting .exe file. However, the printers also have drivers for non-Windows operating systems which cannot run a Windows executable to get their drivers, entailing the use of an additional Windows-based machine. While access to a Windows machine to run the program is generally common, it does seem a bit of an imposition to have to find a separate machine to extract a full CD for a small driver that's supported by the printer.

Would it be possible to get just the individual drivers listed for download on the website, or at least make the current CD file available in a .zip or similarly universal format? Comment »

Using Canada Post for ink deliveries

Printers and Ink submitted by onthecoast 12/15/07

If new ink cartridges for Dell printers are to remain primarily available only from the Dell Web site, I suggest that Canada Post be used for delivery. At present Purolator is used. After a recent ink purchase, Purolator left no indication at my apartment that a delivery attempt was made. I only received a phone call that said two delivery attempts were made and that I now must *pick up* the ink from the Purolator office. I live fairly centrally in Vancouver, but the Purolator office is far from where I live and inconvenient to get to, as I suspect is true for many Canadians in other communities. I suggest using Canada Post for smaller shipments like ink cartridges since these packages can easily fit in apartment mailboxes, which Canada Post has access to. Or, if a signature is absolutely required, it is at least more likely that a customer will have a Canada Post office nearby than a Purolator office.

I recently learned that some Dell ink cartridges are available at Staples, which is great, but unfortunately the selection is still rather small. Hopefully this will expand in the future and/or a new delivery method will be implemented.

Cheers! Comment »
