new perspective

New Product Ideas submitted by kth_eckert 2 days ago

My girlfriend and I were sharing the sofa watching a movie. Our heads were propped up on pillows, at best 30 degrees. The thought came to me that photo programs allow you to rotate the picture 90 degrees, So why cant you rotate your television picture in the same manner. For people who are bed ridden or as in my case sofa sharing this could make for a more comfortable movie watching experience. 2 Comments »

When you ask for suggestions try responding to them

Dell Community, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 3 days ago

This Idea is 2 fold.

First you created a website for customers to submit ideas and hardy ever give feedback. There are currently 14 ideas on the front page that haven't been tagged yet. Dell tells us that you talk about these top ideas 1 - 2 times a week. How hard is it to tag an idea after you talk about it?

Second you post an article on Direct 2 Dell about the new Dell home page and ask for suggestions. I posted a reply yesterday afternoon with links to several Ideas I had posted over the last year on the topic. Not only did I never get a response on any of them on IdeaStorm but they get ignored on Direct 2 Dell as well.

Computer operated chess board

Gaming, New Product Ideas submitted by youngexzec08 3 days ago

It's a computer operated chess board. which is controlled by a wireless keypad made just the game of chess. it's a system that u can hook up to your desktop and you and your opponet can sit across from one another and control their pieces through the keyboard. For example instead of moving the knight with your hands you can press k3 so that the knight will move to the space on the board. and you can also play the game online. for example same rules apply and the pieces will move on both of the computerized chess boards... a gaming experience that will have millions of chess players very happy. and excited to play. 6 Comments »

BLU SKY and DREAMS

Laptops submitted by axiom 3 days ago

Since inception in the late 1980’s, notebook computers have transformed into smaller, lighter, more powerful tool. They have steadily moved closer and closer towards the original idea of complete computing “portability”. As designers, engineers and researchers push further towards true mobile computing, an interesting phenomena occurs: the "change of immateriality.......less becomes more. This occurs everywhere in the technological landscape, and with it comes new utilities and power. Peripheral and secondary objects which in one way or another were physically connected, are entering the "immaterial" realm. Once tangible, stand alone objects, connected between and to one another, become software programs and routines. This enabled more capabilities in both interface and physical design.

Yet even the smallest, lightest notebook remains a hard, boxy like artifact; tethered to an AC/DC power cord. I would like to see a gigantic, evolutionary step forward.

A truly thin, extremely light weight binder or "two page" pamphlet like device which would be impervious to liquid spills, moderate temperature fluctuation, and all but the steepest drop from a table top. It would have almost an infinitely reconfigurable graphic user interface (ala "iPhone GUI, but better). All user inputs would take place through this interface. Top and bottom pieces would be
attached to one another by way of thin plastic arm(s) or long lengthwise "living" joint. Low voltage power would be directed between the two sides via extremely thin conductive “gel” spread and sealed within the joints The gel will contact with thin, flexible pickups emanating from the etched microelectronic circuitry sealed within each page. The top and bottom pages would withstand all but a total 90 degree fold across the width dimension.

This notebook would banish the battery pack / power cable scheme. To recharge; simply place on any flat surface dissipating energy as a byproduct of operation; faint kinetic tremors, low heat or cold energy; perhaps sound waves. The circuitry detects these latent energies and transforms it into stored, low voltage electrical current.

Lastly, the conductive gel would react to temperature fluctuations by changing colors accordingly. Each device could become individualistic in its own way and time; doing away with one, two or three color schemes currently available from manufacturers today. 2 Comments »

Fedora 9 on select Dell laptops and Desktops

Dell, Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by s33nagain 3 days ago

Linux on the Dell laptops Have been amazing, so very nice. But your Linux videos completely enstate that Dell is all about choice. And, well, some users like Fedora more than Ubuntu. It doesn't have to be known this way, but some Linux Veterans lke Fedora more. And Ubuntu is more of a beginning Linux OS. I'm not saying that people who are long-time Linux user souldn't use Ubuntu.

I'm saying that some perfer a different "cup of tea" or, in Ubuntu's case, "cup o' coffee". And that's what dell is about.

In addition to the already distributed Dell computers that serve FreeDOS, and Ubuntu, we should add Fedora on select desktops and laptops. 1 Comment »

bluetooth wirelessand keyless keboard and mouse

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by lockhartsam 3 days ago

Well my idea is a bluetooth wireless and keyless keyboard and mouse. simular to the mouse pad that are on laptops. the keybard itself is a flex pad that is touch sensitive and is attached on bothsides to some sort of unit that is compact and the pad rolls up into. the mouse pad is also on the same pad and u control it by moving your finger around in the area.
Instead of keys on the pad is the standard keyboard layout lit up in a blue neon light and when the letter or symbol is pressed the light would dim and the selected symbol or letter would be inputed on to the screen. because of the compact size and the fact it rolls up in to the unit it could be used by individuals on the move with laptops or in the home with desktops. it would charge and get power like most standard bluetooth devices and would have a usb bluetooth adapter for those computers without buletooth built in. 4 Comments »

Three time onsite engineer came to solve that problem. My time waste,my money waste.
Now my notebook is not a new notebook it like a second notebook.
Wrost Quality assuanrance in the Dell
I think better if they make complete check before issuing the product to the customer.

Vostro laptop design changes

Desktops and Laptops submitted by grey_newt 2 days ago

The Vostro laptop needs some design improvements....

1. The 4 USB ports are on the side towards the front - I use them all so I have cables coming out of both sides and they both look ugly and get in te way. I'll need to buy a USB hub now. Place at least two at the back.

2. USB ports are close together. Many memory sticks are promotioal items - so they are fatter than necessary - which means that you cannot plug in two next to each othe. just make the ports wider apart.

3. The audio controls do not have a mute button - so Fn+delete has to be used - you have the space on the panel - add a mute facility

4. The lid closes flat and there is absolutely no way to open it with one hand. There is no recess in the lid, so you have to get your nail under the lid and somehow hold the body down at th same time - I couldn't believe this when I saw it - such a bad design fault

5. The keyboard is springy and needs to be thumped for the keys to register. My old Inspiron keyboard was perfect - receptive and on a hard surface - this feels like it is sitting on foam as it bends as I type.

This is the worst laptop design I have ever come across... 1 Comment »

Give us some details about your planned mini notebook PC.

Laptops submitted by winoffice Apr 12

There are several requests now for mini notebook PCs here.

I came across a technological-oriented Web site from another idea, and I noticed that apparently Dell is planning a "sub-notebook" (mini notebook PC) (that Web page apparently also has a link to another Web site, with a similar report; a link to that Web page is here).

I myself am unlikely to buy mini notebooks...I prefer 17" notebooks...but still, I might consider it. I would like Dell to give us some details concerning it.

What screen sizes and resolutions would be offered? What operating systems would be offered? (I am hoping for XP and Vista to be offered; but Linux might also be an option probably.) What are the specifications for the rest, like hard drive, memory and processor options? Will there be built in optical drives? (I am doubtful of that but I still am unsure, so I would like Dell to provide details about this too.) Please provide some details Dell. 6 Comments »

Downloads/Drivers - Option to Sort by Date

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by alfredska Jul 2

When using the support website to download updated drivers and applications for our Dell computers, we are only offered alphabetical sorting by category, then product description. It is time consuming to browse all of the categories. Implement a "Sort by date" option, so we can quickly see if one of our devices has received attention recently. Comment »

Ubuntu on Studio Notebooks

Linux, Laptops submitted by joshhendo 3 days ago

The new Dell Studio laptops look great! Taking the best design features from many other Dell products, and put them all into one.

This laptop actually looks like it should run Linux (that is the first thing I thought when I saw it). I don't know why I say that, but it just does. So, why not give it ago? I don't have a Studio, though I suspect it shouldn't take too much to get Ubuntu working (may need one or two drivers written, but from my experience with Dell laptops and Ubuntu, most things work well).

This is one of the products I would particularly like to see Ubuntu as an option to be pre-inatlled on if Ubuntu can't be an option on all models. 2 Comments »

Fire wall Your Home

Software, Laptops submitted by nicole112707 3 days ago

I can't tell you how many times I have left the house and left the iron, oven, curling iron, or even my parent’s faulty clothing dryer on. You have to turn all the way around and go home or find someone who will break into your house to do it for you. I think that some kind of software developed that links from your home to your computer (at work or where ever) and your cell phone that would enable you to shut off certain outlets in your home would be a life saver. Imagine you are driving to the airport, and you realize that you THINK you left the iron on. Just open your cell phone, call your house, and punch in the appropriate code and the outlets power is cut. Or you open up your laptop log onto the dell site...it pulls up the outline of your home, you click the outlet that the unit is plugged into, and it shuts off. This would not only be ground breaking technology but would also save lives. You could even go as far as to add a garage door shutter as an upgrade, or shut off lights.... turn down/up the air... the possibilities are endless. Just a thought! 8 Comments »

Media Center PC

XPS products submitted by fasdrr 3 days ago

I currently have an XPS 720 and use it as the Media Center PC for my Home Theater setup. The PC works great with Vista Ultimate and the disk storage is good but it really isn't very eye appealing in my home theater rack. Several other companies have competing products that do look Stereo receivers and factor in lower noise levels for when you are watching movies or TV programs. It would be great if Dell had a product in the XPS line like this. It should also support the integrated Cable Card option and HDMI connectiivity so I can eliminate my cable box. 3 Comments »

Double Sided Monitors

Monitors and Displays submitted by nicole112707 3 days ago

What if you had a double sided Monitor? This would be great solution for schools that have computer rooms seating 2 people to a desk/table facing each other, or even an office environment with partner desks. You could still have the flexibility to raise/lower your screen, or tilt back and forth. This would be attractive to consumers trying to cut down on the price of purchasing multiple monitors at one time. Even the consumer that only sits one to a desk could use the option to show what they are doing to someone sitting across from them. I don't know how many times I’ve been in my boss’s office and he had to turn his monitor around to show me something. Or, maybe you can put a slide show on it... it would be a lot more attractive to look at pictures than the back of ones monitor.... just a thought! 3 Comments »

Dell is going green

Environment submitted by waymonwhite 3 days ago

We are consistently being messaged to conserve enregy, by unplugging all electrical appliances when not in use.
I would like to have an outlet adapter that would discontinue the electrical bleed, when the appliance is turn off.

This could be accomplished through an adapter or through the appliance itself having an anti-electrical bleed switch. 1 Comment »

movie night

New Product Ideas submitted by bledyard Jul 2

picture this... the long lines at the movie theatre, the crying baby that the mother cant do anything with, the pre-teens and teens running wild. If you are as tired of this as I am, I propose we do something about it. I propose that we develop a partnership with either cable companies or satalite providers and have the movies that are in the theatre in our household. I know that I would pay $50 per movie to have this feature available to me so I wont have to deal with the above situations. 10 Comments »
