Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS. Show the Ubuntu Line of Desktop and Notebooks on the regualr dell ordering site Dell Web Site, Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by timberwolf753 05/24/07 Show the Ubuntu Line of Desktop and Notebooks on the regular dell site. Do not hide it to the general public. Do not make them go to www.dell.com/open. Do not hide the fact that you sell Linux to the average person. 7 Comments » Dell, Linux submitted by jmxz 05/24/07
UPDATE: Dell explained it well in the comments to this Idea Dell has announced three different systems with Ubuntu 7.04 installed: the XPS 410n and Dimension E520n desktops and the Inspiron E1505n notebook. However, those expecting lower prices for their Linux boxes may be disappointed because there is little or no price differential between the Linux and Windows models. In fact, the entry level E520 Windows desktop is significantly cheaper. Scanning the internet I see many [conspiracy] theories:

The Open Source market is growing - fast. Send Best Ubuntu Laptop (and Desktop?) to PC Magazine! Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by maccam94 05/01/07 PC Magazine is one of the most widely read computing magazines, and by sending your top Linux configurations to them for review, you will get the word out about your exciting new offerings, as well as generate awareness about Linux itself. 5 Comments » Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by terrymain 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
All new laptops should have a built in web cam and quality voice recorder/microphone. Provide one Notebook and one desktop with hardware entirely supported under opensource licences Dell, Linux, Software submitted by monday90 05/06/07 Either source your own drivers and release them under an open source license or build them from hardware that has openly available interfaces. This enables people to install whatever they want, Windows/ Linux /BSD /Opensolaris etc and write their own drivers should they wish to. You wouldn't even have to provide drivers for the latter option. All of this can already be done, the challenge is putting together the best performing rig. 6 Comments » Don't limit Ubuntu sales (like the media's reporting you are doing) Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz 05/08/07 From: http://techiqmag.com/2007/05/08/dell-limits-ubuntu-linux-sales/ If you’re planning to load up on Dell’s new Ubuntu Linux systems for a corporate department or small business, Dell may have a surprise for you. As the old saying goes, read the fine print. Yeah, I know the article mentions you have similar limitations on Windows Home machines -- but don't limit the Ubuntu sales for small-businesses. It's not clear from the article if you intend to do that or not. 8 Comments » Show the Vista performance rating during system configuration. People may not realize that Vista gives your computer a performance rating based on several factors (processor, RAM, hard drive and video card). 83 Comments » Software submitted by doomlord52 02/19/07 I think everyone agrees here. No McAfee. i cant unistall my copy because it will take all my settings for the Microsoft firewall with it. That includes my outlook settings, internet, and just about every program. Why cant i say "no McAfee please"??? is it really that hard? use Norton.... 72 Comments » pre-installed linux ubuntu on desktops and laptops Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by fra9000 02/20/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Participate in the product design process! Dell is using IdeaStorm to decide between two new product design concepts. Vote on your favorite and weigh in to tell us what you think. When we unveiled the XPS 710 H2C at CES this year, we also uncovered it. There were a limited number of systems sprinkled throughout the show floor that had a clear side panel allowing easy viewing of the patent-pending two-stage H2C liquid cooling system. Since then, more than a few people have suggested we offer a “panel with a view” as an option for our XPS 710 line. Now we need you to vote for one of these two options and, most importantly, share some reasons why you like it. This “Now You Decide” vote campaign will be open from Wednesday, April 25 to Friday, May 11. The design that gets the most votes will be featured in a future generation of XPS gaming desktops. Check out the latest Idea in Action on the new XPS 730. 108 Comments » Do not hire nontechnical people for techsupport Service and Support submitted by jbrogers 02/17/07
This is the main problem with the India call centers - they have no idea what they are doing. They are obviously reading a scripted diagnosing tool and have no personal knowledge of computing issues. No OS Installed (at a lower cost!) Dell, Operating Systems submitted by fuscob 05/06/07 We understand that there is already an option to have no OS preloaded on the machine, but it doesn't save any money. A copy of XP Pro OEM costs $139 - the consumer should get that money back if they choose not to have Windows preloaded. 10 Comments » Sales Strategies, Software submitted by mcneiljohn 05/06/07
Completely eliminate all crapware on new computers, but provide access to all trial software versions on a dvd requiring conscious action by the user to install and provide a booklet with a brief description of the promoted products. Remove metallic Windows sticker Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bastos 02/21/07
The unremovable metallic "Vista capable" or "Designed for XP" sticker serves no purpose as soon as the laptop is in use by the end-user. Dell should design its notebooks to be sleek, stylish and simple -- and a permanent stickers is the exact opposite. This is (in part) why Apple sells the most stylish laptops, and why the one you buy is never as nice as the one you see in the promotional-pictures (no stickers!) Linux Hardware Compatibility List Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**
Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...
