4GB Upgrade a ripoff?

submitted by bobhalford Jan 2

If you are not aware that the full 4GB of addressable ram space is not available when you pay for the memory upgrade option, (my machine reports 3.3GB... so thats over 600 MB lost) you might see this as a ripoff... it is really not worth going beyond 3GB for a 32 bit address-space cpu. Dell should point this out when offering the option.

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Dell: TELL US how you are improving system / storage reliability!

Service and Support submitted by phubert Mar 6

This article reports on a recent study of storage reliability, but reliability is an issue for ALL computer users.

What ARE the factors of reliability?
Are there elements the CUSTOMER should attend to?

Engage the community in addressing how Dell is pursuing reliability across the full range of systems they provide!

You don't know disk about storage failures

:...a recent study presented at the USENIX Conference on File and Storage Technologies argues that disk failure isn't nearly the whole story. Other components in a storage subsystem are often the point of failure, although their failings are still treated as disk faults. This results in unnecessary disk replacements — and inevitably an incomplete perspective on storage system resiliency." ****

The Inspiron 1525 needs a graphics card!

Inspiron products submitted by union Mar 6

The new Inspiron 1525 laptop does not have ANY discrete graphics cards!

The old 1520 had a whole line of graphics options, but this new replacement only offers a useless Intel accelerator.Even the smaller 1420 has a graphics card--it seems Dell wants users to upgrade to the XPS line to get even basic graphics performance.

Unfortunately, without a discrete card a laptop's ability to edit photos or videos, run presentations, play games and run Windows Vista is crippled.

To fix the problem, Dell should offer at least two graphics card options on the 1525, which would make it one of best laptops around. 13 Comments »

coming soon Upcoming components list

Dell Web Site, Desktops and Laptops submitted by theideasman Mar 5

Similar to what alienware do when you look at their systems and it tells you what components are coming out for the machine soon it would be handy if dell could include that for their desktops and laptops.

Notice at the top of the alienware page for this notebook there is a "coming soon" box with a list of components. Just something simple like that. ;p

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Linux Hardware Compatibility List

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...

We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.

Submit hardware specifications to the Linux Driver Project

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by upstaked 10/05/07 **REVIEWED**

Back in January kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman from Novell started a project offering companies free Linux driver development.

This proved so successful that Novell made it his full-time job and turned to a project with over 200 kernel developers: http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/ .

So Dell, submit specs and convince your hardware providers to do so too. I want to spend my money on great new hardware that runs on Linux.

We constantly work with our hardware partners to develop and maintain open-sourced drivers. Also, we make it clear that through their own developers (or other projects like the Linux Driver Project) they need to deliver on drivers.

Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores

Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14

Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 734 Comments »

Ubuntu on all models where it works

Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.

Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft.
We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Make it clear what is included in a purchase

Sales Strategies submitted by spudz777 Mar 5

When making a major purchase, it is vital to know what is (and what is not) included in that purchase. Dell needs to make this very clear while configuring a computer. My personal example (which appears fairly common from the dellcommunity.com forums) is the option for a second hard drive in the Inspiron 1720 or Vostro 1700. The laptop obviously supports two hard drives, but a customer who is used to building their own machines will recognize that adding their own second drive (instead of the ones available at the original time of purchase) seems to make sense. Hard drives can be found cheaper, higher speed, higher capacity, etc. than the options given by Dell.

What is never clear until after the laptop arrives is that unless you order the system with two drives originally, you won't receive the necessary hardware to add the second drive. Dell then tries to sell it to you at a premium. At least two parts are necessary, with a cost of $10.99 each, plus shipping. This adds close to $30 to the price of what, at first, appeared to be an economical upgrade.

Dell needs to clarify what exactly is missing from the system for each option like this. Another example might be: If you purchase a laptop computer with integrated graphics, is it possible to install a dedicated solution at a later date? If so, is any hardware necessary in addition to the new graphics card?

This type of information can be crucial when budgeting for a computer purchase, and finding out after the fact that the cheaper/faster/larger drive you want to install is going to cost $30 more than planned can leave a very bad taste one's mouth. 2 Comments »

Inspiron Notebook Graphics Card Options Are LACKING...budget gamers VOTE to change!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming submitted by syrics06 11/21/07

Dell,

It wasn't but 2-YEARS ago when I purchased my Inspiron E1705. It came equipped with a Geforce Go 7900GS ($299.00 Option) which was perfect for gaming....Now, it wasn't near as fast as the Geforce Go7900GTX that was in the XPS line but it provided me with a good 'BUDGET' gaming computer.

I recently have been circling your website to find a similar budget/gaming configuration and have been unsuccessful. Why?

Dell only offers LOW END graphics cards like the Geforce 8400GS/GT & Geforce 8600GS/GT...Sure, they are DX10...but what good does that do if you can't even play a DX10 game at a reasonable framerate?

I mean C'MON DELL....A Geforce 8600GT in a 17" laptop? My 2-year old laptops graphics card is MUCH FASTER....Whats up here?

It seams you are forcing the budget gamers to either choose HORRIBLE FRAME-RATES or $2500.00+ XPS Systems that the performance will be doubled on in two months AKA - XPS 1730 w/ SLI 8700M - Being replaced in January with 8800M SLI...by the way...ONE 8800M is faster than the TWO 8700Ms....WONDERFUL...
so for those of you that just dropped close to $3,000.00...SIT COMFORTABLE KNOWING YOU ARE GOING TO BE DOUBLED ON IN JANUARY.

Budget gamers UNITE and VOTE 'YES' to "BETTER GRAPHICS CARD OPTIONS IN INSPIRON NOTEBOOKS".

Dell, all we want is the OPTION...even if it costs $300.00...let us atleast choose a SINGLE 8700M or 8800M GT in the 17" inspiron notebooks "desktop replacements".
