Facial Gestures for Mouse Control

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Software submitted by kirkktx 12:06pm

I would like to configure my computer so that I control the mouse pointer using facial gestures.

For example, I'd like to train it to move to the right if I stick my tongue out and turn my head to the right. The motion would be based on how quickly I turn my head.

If I puff up my right cheek, this would map to a right mouse click.

Again, the mapping of all mouse events to facial gestures/movements should be configurable by the user.

Not only would this help users with disabilities, it could very well end up as a viable alternative to the touchpad. 21 Comments »

Higher Screen Resolution on Inspiron 13

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays submitted by ccpljat 6:02am

I'm back again! Title says everything. It is interesting how Dell keeps insisting on only allowing a tiny 1280x800 on its laptop screens. Let's see some improvement. 4 Comments »

Launch the 13" and 14" Inspiron in EU/UK/Asia !

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by pwl2706 8:12am

Currently it's only possible to get an Inspiron with smaller than 15" screen in the US.

You should make the new 13" and 14" laptopns available in Europe. 4 Comments »

Lower the price on your LED backlit screens.

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by jervis961 May 24

Currently Dell charges $150 to upgrade a notebook to a LED backlit screen. A recent article shows the price difference between the two technologies is only about $8 now. http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4424

I know there are additional costs for Dell to build the thinner casing to hold the LED but I don't see plastic costing $100 (leaving $42 for profit). I expect that Dell could drop the cost by $50 to $75 easily which would drive sales and continue to drop the cost of the technology. 4 Comments »

Stackable coupons

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by jervis961 Aug 22

Currently Dell utilizes coupon codes to entice customers to buy a new system. The problem with the coupons are that they negate the discounts Dell has already placed on a system. This results in more confusion for the customer who now has to configure a system with and without the coupon to see which is cheaper. When combined with having to check multiple Dell sites to find the best sale it becomes a huge hassle to the customer and may result in loss of a sale.

Perhaps Dell should follow Lenovo's lead and provide stackable coupons. This would result in a smaller value coupon but would greatly reduce customer frustration with the current process. 7 Comments »

Offer ATI video cards on the new E-series Latitudes

Broadband and Mobility, Latitude products, Digital Nomads submitted by jervis961 Aug 13

The recent problems with NVIDIA cards breaking down have spread to the newer cards as well. Combined with the way NVIDIA is hiding information from customers and blaming everyone else wake me uneasy about the company. I simply cannot trust NVIDIA at this time and refuse to buy a system with one of their cards even though I need dedicated video. Dell needs to offer ATI video cards as an option on the E-series Latitudes.

Here is some reading material on the subject. http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/08/12/nvidia-g92s-g94-report... 1 Comment »

When you ask for suggestions try responding to them

Dell Community, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 Jul 3

This Idea is 2 fold.

First you created a website for customers to submit ideas and hardy ever give feedback. There are currently 14 ideas on the front page that haven't been tagged yet. Dell tells us that you talk about these top ideas 1 - 2 times a week. How hard is it to tag an idea after you talk about it?

Second you post an article on Direct 2 Dell about the new Dell home page and ask for suggestions. I posted a reply yesterday afternoon with links to several Ideas I had posted over the last year on the topic. Not only did I never get a response on any of them on IdeaStorm but they get ignored on Direct 2 Dell as well.

Can we come to an agreement to delete old ideas in negative points?

IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 Jun 28

I think that ideas with negative points that have been given ample time for voting should be looked at for deletion. (which is the idea) The question to you my fellow IdeaStorm users is what criteria should justify deletion? How long is ample time? How much in the negative should they be?

If you feel that no ideas should ever be deleted (unless they violate rules of course) go ahead and demote. I'm just trying to find a way to clean up the place a bit. 73 Comments »

Option to replace notebook touch pad with a small touchscreen

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by jervis961 Jun 22

What better evolution for the touch pad than to make it more useful. You could use it as a touch pad, Vista Sideshow (or Linux equivalent) or both at the same time. I'm sure Dell could work something out and may even find many more uses for it.

Sharp has produced a small touchscreen that is capable of multi-touch and scanning. http://sharp-world.com/corporate/news/070831.html
With one of these instead of a regular touch pad business users could scan a new contact's business card by simply placing it on the screen. 8 Comments »

"The Napkin PC aims to bring out the creative passion of the user both individually and in group sessions. It encourages spreading out and allows for multiple creative workflows that can interact or just as easily stay independent. It encourages group interaction and collaboration by allowing any number of interfaces that can be passed around or pinned up, but which all communicate with a central network."

Show the Vista performance rating during system configuration.

Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

People may not realize that Vista gives your computer a performance rating based on several factors (processor, RAM, hard drive and video card).
Dell should show the performance rating on the side as you build your computer and update it as you go along changing the configuation. This should give people a guage as to if an upgrade will really improve your overall performance and also what kinds of games and programs your new computer will be capable of.

Keep XP and dump the Vista/XP downgrade for Small busniess systems

Operating Systems submitted by theohai 3 days ago

Get rid of the Vista/XP downgrade option and keep XP as choice. This downgrade needlessly adds ~$100+ to the price of small business systems (SBS) for an opsys that's going to never be used. As has been stated several times in several different messages here, XP works, and Vista is next to worthless especially on Laptops.

If nothing else sell SBS with no operating system, and make a driver CD avaliable with all drivers, e.g. XP, Linux, Vista, etc. Then each business or user can customize the system as they see fit and have the option to get out from under Vista, or choose Vista as they see fit.

Let Microsoft (MS) know the amount of additional hardware needed to get comparable performance on a Vista machine ( vs. XP) is driving many businesses to explore other alternatives. I know I have been looking for more cost effective alternatives. Dell has always sold quality systems and with Vista becomming more prevalent you're large enough to hopefully exert enough pressure on MS to keep XP a low cost choice. 20 Comments »

Do not hire nontechnical people for techsupport

Service and Support submitted by jbrogers 02/17/07

This is the main problem with the India call centers - they have no idea what they are doing. They are obviously reading a scripted diagnosing tool and have no personal knowledge of computing issues.

I have both home and business accounts with Dell. When I call in for support on my Business account, I get a good old-fashioned American geek, who instantly understands that I am fairly technical, and doesn't treat me like an idiot.

The Indian call centers, not having knowledge themselves, do not recognize that I know anything, and treat me like an idiot as they read from the diagnosis tool. Yeah, I know the computer is plugged in. Yeah I know that I have internet connectivity. Sheesh.

STOP the outsourcing! + Get the laptops/desktops retail!

Sales Strategies submitted by mlindine 08/16/07

Really guys. Just get ALL of the reps from dell based in the United States. By doing this, it will save you in the long run. Be the only company that DOESN'T outsource and watch how fast your stock goes up. This includes sales and techs (especially), It's discouraging to here customers come in to staples looking for a new laptop saying things like:

-----
CUSTOMER: Yeah my old laptop broke, I had a dell. It worked great until I had a problem with it.
ME: Did you speak with someone from technical service about this?
CUSTOMER: Yes. For (*3 HOURS*) I got outsourced to a foreign country, I eventually hung up and called again just to be outsourced yet again.
ME: Sorry to hear that, I'll try me best to pass that to the right people.
CUSTOMER: Yes, you really should I've told my fellow teachers not to get a dell because of the phone problems. It's terrible.
-----

That's just a simple dialog of how the conversation went. She eventually purchased a HP that same day and stormed out of the store in anger.

I would also like to see some dells go into retail stores like (staples). I understand you guys have walmart, but can we get them into some more stores; please?

Voice your opinions about this issue, and hopefully this will get somewhere. 28 Comments »

Touchpads suck! A new internal mouse invention for Notebooks

Laptops submitted by liurical 02/16/07

Touchpads suck. I don't get why they've been around for so long. None of the big companies offer a good alternative besides us having to buy and carry around an external mouse.

I came across this invention that is effective like a normal mouse, but can be contained within a notebook computer. It can definitely remove the issues I face with the touchpad .

I characterize it as the trackball of an optical mouse, but would actually work well if designed properly.

I came across this invention after stumbling on the inventor's site. http://www.nextintuit.com He has a prototype simulation of the simple invention in flash.

The Wii and iPod were both hits, the way they input data had a lot to do with that success. I want to see something different from Dell for a change. 32 Comments »

keyboard feature

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by nbgadd729 Aug 23

Use the "hold down" feature to capitalize a letter - similar to the Blackberry.

After just starting to use a Blackberry product it is probably my most favorite feature. If Dell were able to replicate this function on their keyboards it would actually save a finger stroke! Also, make using both easier. 12 Comments »

Please provide an option to purchase the Studio laptops without the coffee stain on the wrist rest

Laptops submitted by zero79 Aug 22

Dell, your Studio laptops are pretty nice, but have a giant deficiency. They all come with what appears to be a giant coffee stain on the wrist rest. This is just downright ugly. All of the videos I have seen on youtube complain about this problem. In fact they were somewhat peeved because they were not aware that the stain would be there when they bought the system. At least be honest with your customers upfront -- get some pictures up of the wristpad that show how nasty this is (you cannot see the problem from the pictures on your site).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUMqzc_cD8Y&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kafRGNyMsK8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGBsLBY58PY

I'm just glad that I went into best buy and took a look at the thing before I bought one because I would be pretty unhappy once it arrived.

Please add an option to purchase the system without the coffee stain defect. Thanks. 2 Comments »

10-inch and 8.9-inch netbook market are so saturated. Why not give us 12-inch netbook?

I assume from the rumors that 12-inch Dell E Slim is not going to happen. 9 Comments »
