Submit hardware specifications to the Linux Driver Project

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by upstaked 10/05/07 **REVIEWED**

Back in January kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman from Novell started a project offering companies free Linux driver development.

This proved so successful that Novell made it his full-time job and turned to a project with over 200 kernel developers: http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/ .

So Dell, submit specs and convince your hardware providers to do so too. I want to spend my money on great new hardware that runs on Linux.

We constantly work with our hardware partners to develop and maintain open-sourced drivers. Also, we make it clear that through their own developers (or other projects like the Linux Driver Project) they need to deliver on drivers.

Put Ubuntu on a laptop with better specs

Inspiron products, Linux submitted by piratehead 10/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer an Ubuntu laptop (Inspirion or otherwise) with available discreet graphics, discreet audio, 8GB or more of RAM, a quad-core processor, bluetooth, next-gen WiFi, and integrated webcam.

I don't know how many of those are possible at this point, but each one is a step forward for people who are waiting on certain specs to bite on a Dell laptop.

Now that you offer laptops with Ubuntu on them, I really don't want to go to another company just to get the computer specs I want. I wish to vote for Dell with my dollars, paying for a laptop that has actually been tested and certified by the manufacturer to run Ubuntu. Please give me the opportunity!

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Ubuntu Dell Repo

Linux, Service and Support submitted by tekhawk 07/20/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

basicly a simple idea dell to support the ubuntu community a little bit by running a repo for its laptops and desktop if nothing more to support the software that they install on the system and to provide driver updates theses repos should be setup on the machines before shipping so that the users can get the driver updates quick and easy and offer driver on there for all the drivers that there are for dell machines that are support on linux not just the shipping lines

so that user might find that other machines then the ones you ship with ubuntu can easly be made into power ubuntu operating machines

As matt_d has said below, we have repositories for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, Novell/SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, and a growing one for Ubuntu. Check it out here http://linux.dell.com.

Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Linux Hardware Compatibility List

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...

We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

standardize laptop batteries

Laptop Power submitted by haxtor 03/15/07

have only a few (ideally just one, but possibly 2-3?) types of laptop batteries that fit *all* laptops. what I would really like to see is total interchangeability, i.e. *any* Dell battery fits *any* Dell laptop (why stop there, I want them to be standard across manufacturers). but if that is not practical, then just limit it to a couple of different standard sizes/form factors that fit the entire product line. you may do this by having all batteries have the same connectors, same voltage, same width and height, but different depths and different amps and amp-hours ratings.

rationale: batteries don't last long (a year or so); it is *such* a pain looking for a battery for an old laptop that is not being made any more. 1 Comment »

M-Audio soundcard/speaker options

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by echostatic 03/07/07

Because face it... SoundBlaster just doesn't cut the mustard! M-Audio has been around for ages and bits like the Audiophile 2496 are absolutely rock-stable soundcards for software musicians, enthusiasts and pros. Mix in their speaker/midi controller/soundcard options and you'd have excellent, attractive and inexpensive studio PCs - a niche not much explored by current or previous Dell lineups! Comment »

Post real, hard specs of hardware options

Advertising and Marketing submitted by echostatic 03/07/07

The info provided during customization is a joke at the moment - when comparing CPUs under the "Help Me Choose" panel, I'm told the difference in terminology between single-core and dual-core. Overview, reccommendations, and "compare side-by-side" only tell me the same thing - nothing about the actual choices of processors (clockspeeds, FSB speeds, power consumption, etc). Same with video card and sound selections. Please provide more info in-store, rather than making us bring up Newegg or similar to sleuth! 3 Comments »

integrate webcam, microphone, and AI into basic software

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Software submitted by xshadow259 03/07/07

Today it seems silly that a computer should not come with a webcam and microphone. They should be built into the monitor for all desktops/laptops like how (dare I say) Apple does. Further build in programs to tailor to these devices more than to talk to others. Like use the microphone for voice recognition and use the webcam to track a person's finger like a mouse. The keyboard and mouse are over two decades old, do like Nintendo did with the Wii and DS and chuck the traditional control. Also get an advanced AI personal assistant. Little widgets are nice, but I want something that if I ask for weather will search online and display the forecast for the day, or if I ask for a powerpoint it will turn open that. GUI's are also really old, give us something smart! 1 Comment »

no unwanted software

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by gmast 02/25/07

I have to spend time removing unwanted software from Dell Desktop and Laps. Please include a no unwanted software option that would provide a clean install of the OS, patches and drivers. No trial software or unwanted software.
Thanks,

Faster Systems with Faster Disk Drives

Gaming, Servers and Storage submitted by dwayne 02/25/07

Although 15K RPM drives have been available for several years, I have never seen this as an offering in the XPS lineup. I do see the 10K RPM drives configured with RAID 0 for performance reasons. Your configuration pages do not indicate if this is a hardware or software RAID 0, however, I believe they use software RAID. This is sad. Dell's highest performing systems need to incorporate the highest performing components. 2 Comments »

Problems with www.dell.com

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by bajtalan.hunor 02/25/07

I live in Europe, Eastern Europe Romania where Dell systems have quite a big market share, you can find a lot of Dell PC's in stores.
But there is one problem, dell.com does not exist in Romanian language, one of the national languages of the European Union and mother tongue of 18 million people and if you would like to know something about dell pc's, you get everything in English. (www.dell.ro)

HP, Lenovo, Fujitsu-Siemens, even Apple who has a very small market share (Europe) have a romanian version of their services and webpages. (www.apple.ro, www.hp.ro, http://www.pc.ibm.com/ro/home.html)

How you would like to sell your products in a country where your companies webpage is in English. I know Romania is not the world but I think we can get other examples too. Comment »
