Duplicate and reduce for all

Simplify IT submitted by babymoore3 11/30/07

I would like to suggest implementing the integration some items in your product line. Let's get creative like Apple and start making multiple use items...

Break into the VOIP market....
The VOIP corporate telephone system is totally Avaya at our company. This could sooo easily be tied into a keyboard dialing and monitor viewing of messages and use of headphones and microphone as a standard "telephone handset". Not sure this would be more than software? This could tie voicemessaging into email even?

Less screens more function....
LCD TVs and LCD computer screens. Let's make one and maybe computer gaming will exceed Playstation, Ninetendo, Xbox because you can see the big screen with computer games

More interconnectivity....
Let's tie peripherals like a printers, mutli function units and palm pilots back to the monitor to really see what you are doing and ease organization.

Excercise and computers (sounds green huh?)
How about developing activity based programs with certain software companies to help increase the health of people working on computers all day? Similar to what Nintendo has begun. Some games for kids (like dance dance revolution) and some for excercise for adults that are interactive (like wrist strap for health monitoring) encouraging elevated heart rates for extended periods of time?

VIdeos and Cameras...
How about some easy reviewing of digital media? How great to get with Canon and Nikon to utlize quick reviewing on a notebook or desktop instead of downloading all the time. Professionals would love this to ensure stable shots and clear pictures.

Internet Answering machine...
Let's help alleviate the $100+ bills from cable companys and give them some competition. How about internet and answering machine through your home computer. Dial an IP?

Internet voice recognition...
An internet phone call recived by the computer can give return number or IP address while voice activated messaging records a message that is iterated to mp3 file, word document, palm pilot text message, email or printed? Your choice!

Just some thoughts taht I think you could sell.... 2 Comments »

Promote Windows Home Server Bigtime

Servers and Storage submitted by gcreese 02/17/07

Microsoft is coming out with Windows Home Server this year, which will allow households to backup and manage their house PCs from a single spot. At this point, a lot of households are in this situation (e.g., with two adults and a child, we have three laptops, a desktop, and three PDAs). Get out in front of the curve on this one (HP made its announcement at the CES Show), talk about it, promote the fact that you will offer it, and in the vein of the other "make the website easier to use" suggestions, explain how Windows Home Server is something to consider for a family going digital.

Also, offer a Windows Home Server discount to current customers who've ordered two or more PCs from Dell in the past five years. You have the data to run an effective, targeted marketing campaign. Use it! 168 Comments »

DRAC intelligent DHCP client

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Servers and Storage, Simplify IT submitted by kgraham 11/24/07

Besides that DRAC's should ship w/ DHCP enabled by default, there's a number of things that could make it a much more useful tool during provisioning time.

* in the DHCPREQ Client Identifier field, include the chassis service tag. This way, we could assign DRAC hostnames/addresses by service tag, that way you know which machine is which once you go to install OS's.
* Bury the server's mac addresses in a VSA of the DRAC's DHCPREQ.

Both of these will allow significant flexibility in the provisioning process. While I'd personally like to see the service tag sent in the PXE DHCP request, this is likely impractical since it would require too many OS level hacks to ensure that the initial address was preserved (since getting OS's to uniformly manage this is impractical). Besides, this is yet another incentive for DRAC-enabled servers.

As the DRAC gets more intelligent about its DHCP process, it'd be nice to see if become aware of additional attributes such as DNS / NTP servers, and maybe some vendor-specific options such as a configuration location, etc. 2 Comments »

Outsourcing, Philippines is the way to go!

submitted by daryldeal 11/11/07

Hey Dell, im just wondering when are you guys gonna expand your customer and tech support services in the Philippines? i mean, to say it frankly, i'd rather talk to a neutral accent'd filipino that would work with you to resolve a problem than a thick indian accent'd Indian that would speak like a machine gun that would rush the resolution in your concern. 13 Comments »

Finger Tip Sized Touch Pads

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by aikiwolfie 10/28/07

Personally I don't use laptops very often. So when I do I find the touch pad gets in the way. Why is it so big? It only needs to accommodate one finger!

My idea is that Dell reduces the size of the touch pad and moves it from front centre to somewhere out of the way. Perhaps the right hand side. I'd also recommend providing mouse buttons on both sides of the keyboard. This would allow the touch pad to integrate more seamlessly with the rest of the keyboard. 5 Comments »

Give us another update on Apple as you seemed so fond of doing in the past.

Advertising and Marketing submitted by jmxz 07/25/07

Seems apple announced another good quarter:
http://www.macrumors.com/2007/07/25/apple-posts-818-million-profit-for-3rd-qu...

Gross margin was 36.9 percent [better than Dell's], up from 30.3 percent in the year-ago quarter. ...Macintosh computers, representing 33 percent growth ... sold 9,815,000 iPods during the quarter, representing 21 percent growth

How about some Dell execs continue your long tradition of commenting on Apple.

Now before you IdeaStorm voters dismiss this as "Off Topic" for Dell to comment on, note that Dell Execs have a long history of commenting on Apple, including:
Kevin 'iPod is a fad' Rollins

Dell Chief Executive Kevin Rollins is dismissing the iPod as a "fad" and a "one-product wonder" and claiming the new Mac Mini won't dent the PC market.
and
Mike 'give the money back to the shareholders' Dell

"What would I do [if in charge of Dell]? I'd shut [Apple] down and give the money back to the shareholders," Michael Dell said before a crowd of several thousand IT executives.
Perhaps if some Dell Execs would like to continue their tradition of commenting on Apple. No matter what they said it'd be good.

If Dell execs say something as deluded about Apple as they have in the past, we'd all get a good laugh and know to sell any Dell stock we had.

On the other hand, if Dell execs said something insightful about Apple and admitted that they had something to learn from them, we'd see that Dell really is waking up again. 6 Comments »

Make a so called '100 dollar' laptop

submitted by badblood 11/30/07

The so called 100 dollar laptops for use in developing countries are going to make their mark as a useful computer system. Not only can such computers be used effectively in schools around the world, they will prove an attractive cheap and somewhat 'disposable' computer system for those in richer countries, as gifts for children, as computers for the elderly, for use in conference settings (due to the network abilities), and as useful systems for people working in field locations, due to their functional and robust nature and cheap price.

Should intel and OLPC make their computers available on the open market there will be considerable demand for such computers. They are cheap enough to buy as a second or third throw away computer, and have just the right amount of functionality. Basically they are value for money, whereas all other mainstream ultra portable computers are horribly overpriced and as a result we expect too much from them.

So develop a '100 dollar laptop' Even make it 200 dollars, but keep it at that. It will sell, not because it is the fastest, most powerful computer, but because rich people will see it as a disposable and useful addition to their expensive array of overpriced gadgets. 8 Comments »

Linux Mint 4 on Dell instead of Ubuntu

submitted by flycharlles 11/30/07

Hi there,
I know there are many Ubuntu fans and lovers there,i have used Ubuntu and it was my first Linux distro, but with the time i have tried many other distro. So then i come to the conclusion that Ubuntun is good but not the idea choice for someone that is coming to Linux.I think there could be more choice of pre-installed Linux with Dell pc/laptops.for exemple i would suggest that Linux Mint 4 a debian/Ubuntu based distro with all codecs, flash player, dvd playback out-of the box(installed by the default) and Open Suse 10.3 with their One-click install. So i think like this it would make the live of a new buy much easier for exemple.I am not against or hate Ubuntu.I just think we need to think on other people too.I am not a newbie anymore and i have used Linux and 'BSD's for almost 3 years now,so don't you people think it would be a good idea.If you are a newbie and get a almost ready box to use. 3 Comments »

Improve Dell's support center

Dell, Dell Web Site, Service and Support, Software, Simplify IT submitted by liraco 11/30/07

I'm happy with my new Dell Vostro but was very disappointed when I upgraded the Dell Support Center that claimed it was better integrated to improve support. I then went to see if there were new drivers and updates for the computer.

To my dismay, the site has tons of upgrades and all are much older than what my laptop currently has. There's no indication that reveals that, my windows system caught on to me installing an older driver though.

If you really want to make support easier and integrating it with the hardware, then make sure the software know what's already on and show only the things you need (with an option to see older drivers not on by default). Also upgrade the sites drivers faster. How is it my laptop has all its components nwered than what's on the site? That shouldn't be. Comment »

Goal: Dell FREEDOM Box - A Fully Open System for Home Users by 2010

Dell, Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dpic 11/29/07

Set a goal of having at least one fully open system for home users by the end of 2010! This would be Dell's greatest endeavor yet!

The Dell FREEDOM Box | From the software, all the way down to the hardware, a completely open system

Software:
* A fully open source operating system with no restricted software like Gobuntu.

Hardware:
* All hardware must follow these rules--
1. The interface to the hardware must be explicitly made public, so the hardware can be used freely.
2. The design of the hardware must be made public, so that others can implement it and learn from it.
3. The tools used to create the design should be free, so that others can develop and improve the design.

This movement is already making headway and progress will continue to increase. Dell is already getting involved--

It has been stated that Dell has a goal to have open Linux drivers for all Dell products. Dell, keep the pressure on your vendors to open up!

Support OpenBIOS and Open Firmware!
"Among its features, Open Firmware provides an instruction set independent device interface. This can be used to boot the operating system from expansion cards without native initialization code.

It is Open Firmware's goal to work on all common platforms, like x86, AMD64, PowerPC, ARM and Mips. With its flexible and modular design, Open Firmware targets servers, workstations and embedded systems, where a sane and unified firmware is a crucial design goal and reduces porting efforts noticeably."

Already, there is huge support for replacing proprietary BIOS
- http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/62549/LinuxBIOS_instead_of_proprietary_...
And there is the Open Graphics Project
- http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/72320/Help_The_Open_Graphics_Project<

This project would put Dell at the heart of the movement bringing Freedom, Reliability, and Innovation to the world of technology! Does one really need to ask why this would be better than proprietary technology?

Help me consolidate my customer numbers on Dell.com.

Dell Web Site submitted by cosmichellion 11/29/07

I've made many purchases through dell and I have many customer numbers. It's nice that there is a feature that shows all the customer numbers and orders I've placed under Home, Home Office, SMB etc.

However, I keep wondering why the feature doesn't allow you to add customer numbers from certain other segments. When I wanted to add my new customer number and order for a recent purchase, I was given the following message...

"Only Home & Home Office, Small Business, Dell Refurbished and Dell Outlet customer numbers can be added using this feature. This customer number has not been added to your account."

If this feature doesn't do it, is there another I'm missing?

My newest purchase probably shows up under hi-ed or an EPP. It doesn't really matter, I just want to be able to keep track of all my orders in one place regardless of the segment. Can you make this happen? Comment »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Multi-OS selection via checkboxes

submitted by xivulon 11/29/07

What about having a checkbox for each operating system in order to allow users to select multiple choices? No checkbox = no OS, multiple checkboxes = Multiboot. The conflict resolution dialog notifes about conflicts between OS and other hardware choices.

Select My Operating Systems:
[ _ ] Free DOS (info) [$0]
[ x ] Ubuntu 7.10 (info) [$0]
[ _ ] Windows XP (info) [add $50]
[ x ] Windows Vista Basic (info) [add $50]
[ _ ] Windows Vista Home Premium (info) [add $100]
[ _ ] Windows Vista Ultimate (info) [$150]
[ _ ] Windows Vista Business (info) [$100]

Ubuntu, XP and all other operating systems should be made available on all machines unless there is a fundamental hardware issue that makes a particular OS unsuitable (an issue that cannot be resolved by selecting a different component). Each item should have an info button which opens a brief explanation, a fair comparison table of all operating systems should also be provided. Details such as bootloader choice in multiboot configuration and disk allocation algorithm are left to Dell engineers to have fun with.

Hopefully that will accomodate most requests relating to OS choice while keeping the interface simple and intuitive. 26 Comments »

Vostro 1500 with 7200 RPM harddrive option

Servers and Storage, Vostro products submitted by liraco 08/21/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I was really looking forward to getting a Vostro over an Inspiron thanks to its durability, reduced bloatware and Vista Ultimate options but I cannot understand why Dell doesn't include a 7200RPM option.

I'd be willing to put up with a delay if the option were made available but why isn't it an option? The HDD is the only thing stopping me and possibly others from making the jump to Vostro as speed is of great importance.

I hope this is taken care of soon as the Vostro is otherwise a very slick machine.

A 7200 RPM hard drive is an option on the new Vostro1510.

Vostro - Need better VGA / External Monitor connection

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Vostro products submitted by lassen 08/07/07

Vostro 1400 needs a better way to connect external monitors. The current VGA port, which lacks screw-in connectors, wobbles and falls out too easily. Enlarging the case opening may allow the connectors to make secure contact (the receptors appear to be back there, but blocked by the casing).
An even better solution would be to provide a DVI digital port! Comment »

Vostro configuration options

Sales Strategies, Vostro products submitted by mechanix 08/09/07

Two things:

1) make the Vostro desktop line (laptop as well, if you wish) support more than 4 GB of memory; the future's 64-bit so why not allow more -- the chipset (G33) seems to support it...
2) allow quad-core CPUs; the future's threaded... 1 Comment »

Add Windows Vista Premium option for Vostro Line

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Vostro products submitted by adir1 08/09/07

Buyers should be allowed to choose Windows Vista Home Premium on the Vostro line!

The Premium Edition, costing only $29 more (versus In-place upgrade option from Microsoft at $79) is vastly superior and Should be available even on Business line!

Below information comes directly from Microsoft web site, and lists additional features Premium provides versus Basic:

- Best Choice for Laptops (due to Mobility Center and Tablet support)
- Aero Desktop (Live Thumbnails and 3D Flip Choice) - Increase Productivity in addition to beauty
- Collaborate and Share Documents with Windows Meeting Space !!
- Scheduled Backups

I omitted all Entertainment pluses to emphasize that even Business specific additions alone Justify upgrade.

No business person would want to get stuck with inadequate 'Home Basic' edition, and often $199 upgrade to Ultimate or even $99 upgrade to Business edition is raising the computer cost by 20% and more, while still depriving business user of Entertainment on the Go (Yes, it's important ALSO!) 1 Comment »

Offer the Vostro 1700 with one flash SSD and one conventional hard drive

Dell, Vostro products submitted by markvs624 08/12/07

Being the only dual hard drive notebook in Dell's lineup, the Vostro 1700 has potential. Please offer the Vostro 1700 with the currently available 32GB SSD drive as a system drive and a conventional 7200rpm 250GB hard drive as a data drive. Obviously, it would be best to offer all available SSD's and conventional hard drives for each bay to give the user maximum control over the system's components, but at least make an SSD available in the primary drive bay. Also, dual drive configurations would be welcomed on any model in which they can be accommodated, especially all of the 17 inch models. 7 Comments »
