Linux submitted by seeking_alpha 07/10/07

Vista PCs has a lot of "free upgrade" options and thus some of Ubuntu models cost $225 more than the same model with Vista. Details can be found at http://www.devside.net/blog/dell-ubuntu-lies< we get the same for Ubuntu? By the way who sponsors these free upgrades, Microsoft? 5 Comments »

Offer a student discount

Dell, Education, Sales Strategies submitted by doomlord52 07/09/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

A lot of companys offer this. A student discount. Apple sells their Macs for 20% less if your a student. Software companies often offer this on usefull products, such as Cinema 4d, Photoshop, and so on. If dell could offer this, it would help students get dell computers FROM dell. Although you can get a dell pc for $1000 or so, their not really that powerful. This kind of discont would be good on percision, Dimensions and notebooks. 15 Comments »

Offer computers without an OS installed!

Operating Systems submitted by auraofblade 07/10/07

I realize this idea is slightly crazy, but hear me out.

An added with this idea is that the price gets cut. There are some people out there who really don't have quite enough money to buy even the cheapest computer. With around $100 cut off the price (that's that price of a cheap OS right?), people will have the ability to purchase the hardware sooner.

Of course, where do they get their OS? The main one they can use is Linux...its free. On a slight sidenote, you can potentially include an install disc for Linux with the package. And of course that little sticker saying what OS the computer has disappears. 8 Comments »

Thanks for the honesty: "Dell warns of Vista upgrade challenges"

Advertising and Marketing, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Software submitted by jmxz 07/05/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Interesting article here:
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,1000000121,39287855,00.htm

Dell warns of Vista upgrade challenges Published: 04 Jul 2007 18:02 BST

Dell has taken the unusual step — for a PC vendor of its size — of toning down its sales pitch for Microsoft's Vista operating system and warning businesses of the migration challenges that lie ahead for them.
...
Application migration is a key area, Fitzgerald said, echoing comments from Gartner on the size of the issue and the need for considerable testing. "You have to allow time for testing," he said. "Vista is big and complex and there is a lot to it. It requires a lot of testing. You can't just shut off XP on Friday and start Vista on Monday morning. There will be training. There are things to learn."

And as the media's reporting, this is especially nice since it's not necessarily in Dell's short-term best interest to do so:
http://vista.blorge.com/2007/07/05/dell-warns-businesses-of-windows-vista-woes/
Many people would think it would be advantageous for Dell to simply promote Vista as much as it can but it is taking a step back and telling businesses to consider “holding off”...

The move is unusual because Dell makes money from both selling Microsoft’s products and from selling the additional and more expensive hardware that is required to run Vista.
Nice that Dell sees that long term the trust of their customers matters more than the short term extra sales of a few memory chips.

This is re-assuring to hear you saying it publicly and helps people trust you more.

Idea: Keep being honest. It's refreshing. 6 Comments »

Dell List the Error Codes from the Dell Diag. CD

Service and Support submitted by jorge 07/08/07

Dell List what the Error Codes from the Dell Diag. CD mean so your customers can identify what it wrong with their systems without having to call and go through at least 2 people to get the meaning of a code. Most phone support techs do NOT have the look up table (call and find out if you don't believe me) even though the manager above them states they do as they read off what the code means, yea I take up to get the answer to this.

12 cell battery for 17-inch XPS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by urackon 07/13/07

Try to fit in a 12 cell battery into the 17-inch notebook of the XPS line. The XPS's use some pretty power hungry parts (especially the graphics card, actually mainly the graphics card) yet their 9 cell battery is the same one you can find on much smaller lower end notebooks. The old 12 inch xps even had one I think(although it was fat). I know you have to take into consideration the thickness but their 17inch gaming notebooks. 2 Comments »

Dedicated graphics for AMD notebooks

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by migizi 07/13/07

How about some dedicated graphic card options for the AMD notebooks. You claim to be supporting both Intel and AMD but you don't even offer the same options for the AMD that you do for Intel. I know you can get motherboards for AMD laptops that support dedicated graphics. HP has had that option for awhile. Stop showing favoritism, you are only setting the AMD notebooks up for failure by not making them as appealing as the Intel. 1 Comment »

High-end Linux laptop

Linux, New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by teron 07/10/07

Currently, the Inspiron 1505N can be customized to be rather high-end, but it lacks one crucial component: A really high-end graphics card.

This is a request to provide a Linux laptop that can be fitted with a huge hard disk, lots of RAM and a high-end Nvidia graphics card, preferably in a 15" design with lots of USB ports. 8 Comments »

Smaller Power Bricks

Laptops submitted by drew08867 06/28/07

I know they've gotten smaller with the new line of inspirons, but lenovo's are still something to be rivaled. What is the point of having a thin/light laptop and a heavy power brick you have to carry around with it? 4 Comments »

Extend offers like Linux pre-installation to the UK & Europe

Dell, Linux submitted by leftcase 05/03/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

First of all - well done Dell for listening to the people and making some brave decisions about the operating systems you provide your computers with.

Supplying pre-installed Linux (and XP instead of Vista for that matter) goes a good way towards giving customers what they want.

One thing that is slightly irritating however is that none of these offers are available outside of the US. Browsing through peoples comments, blogs and the Dell forums reveals that many people from the UK (for example), want the opportunity to get pre-installed Linux on their new Dell PCs.

The UK and Europe marketplace is not insignificant, and many people feel that you should extend your offer to this market too.

Please see Ideas In Action for additional information. Ubuntu Linux in other countries is coming soon.

Since Alienware is already a part of Dell, why can't we link to it from the Dell Website? We should be proud of acquiring such a company. 3 Comments »

Child-Friendly environment to protect parent's files.

Software submitted by lizblake 06/04/07 **REVIEWED**

After my child and his friend erased our family photos and somehow inverted the display of our family computer... I purchased a software program to give the kids the equivalent of a "gilded cage" to run only software and websites I approve. Similar software would make a great addition to the Dell home computer line-up and could be aimed at families with toddlers, daycare centers, churches, daycare centers, kindergartens, etc.

The software I purchased was called Peanut Butter PC [content removed by moderator] If you don't wish to develop your own, maybe you could license Peanut Butter PC... We absolutely love it.

List implemented ideas under the tab "ideas in action"

IdeaStorm submitted by j.bandringa 07/15/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I would like to have the implemented ideas moved to the tab "ideas in action". I would expect to find them there in the first place. Currently what you find there is news about improvements made because of IdeaStorm. Implemented ideas till now stay in the regular list of ideas. I suggest moving the current content of “ideas in action” to a new tab called “news” and replacing it by the implemented ideas.

Ideas for Dell products and services (not necessarily IdeaStorm site improvements) can be found in our Ideas in Action blog! Check it out.

Let us have nVidia graphics in non-gamer laptops!

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by ccmachine 07/15/07

intel and ATi graphics are the only options in low-powered laptops... nVidia options would be great!

ATi and intel are generally low-powered (and ATi doesn't work well with Linux..) we want nVidia without having to spend £650+ (GBPounds) on a machine! I don't need a 120gb drive and 2gb of memory! 4 Comments »

Dell offer a No-OS option in {insert your country here} for all possible computer systems you offer.

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jorge 07/11/07

Dell offer a No-OS option in{insert your country here}! We also want to have the option of having (or is it not to have) No-OS as an option when buying a computer!

Everyone fill in your own {insert your country here}.

If this doesn't work then create your own idea, it worked for Linux, why not No-OS?

Update: Added all possible computer systems offered by Dell. 52 Comments »

Standardized Full Spec Sheet for all computers

Dell Web Site submitted by blackbelt 07/12/07

Please standardize the specification sheet available on the website, please include it in an easy access PDF format instead of having to wade through flash advertising copy and include DETAILED information such as motherboard chipset/manufacturer, CPU details, RAM specs (cache, latency etc) and manufacturer, sound chipset, bios, hard drive type/speed/manufacturer, number of fans & sizes, case construction materials, etc. I don't like buying a computer where most of the parts are a mystery.
Sure not everyone needs to know, but for the geeks it is important information to determine the quality of the build. 2 Comments »
