A computer with an internal clock that can turn it self ON at scheduled times.

Environment, New Product Ideas submitted by jmxz 12/11/07

To save power I'd like to turn my computer off or hibernate or suspend it when not in use.
However I also have some scheduled tasks I'd really like to run.

My always on computer does everything from installing security patches in the middle of the night; to checking my stocks and email every few minutes.

Could a Dell desktop have an internal clock that can turn itself on at a programmable time. If so, I could even use the computer as an alarm clock.

A feature with a number of turn on times would be nice "power yourself on at 12:00 midnight, and also 6:30 am". Normal software could handle the "if it's the middle of the night and the computer's idle shut down after the security updates are done" or "if it's 6:30, play music like an alarm clock".

Also nice would be a "if suspended, wake up every half hour" feature whereby my computer could do my email, stocks, etc checking; and alert me (play a loud sound so I hear it even when I'm away from it; and/or send my cell phone an I/M) if there's anything I should react to. 12 Comments »

Option to disable the bright blue LED indicator lights on Inspiron Notebooks

submitted by hornysax 12/16/07

I am currently returning a 1420 laptop I recently purchased. The reason is because the blue LED indicator lights on the front of the laptop are too bright. I have color blindness, and my eyes may have heightened sensitivity to color contrast.

I would like accurate representaton of the LED indicator lights on your laptop brands, or an option to turn these off or reduce the brightness on them. I don't purchase any electronics that use blue LED lights.

I also currently own a 700m. The lights are a faint green, and very tame. 1 Comment »

Include cleaning and screen protection cloth with laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by jkeating 11/02/07

A nice dell branded cleaning cloth should be included with new laptops. This cloth would be used to clean the laptop sceens as well as lay on top of the keyboard when the laptop is closed to protect the screen from keyboard imprints. If a cloth is included it is far more likely that this cloth would be used to clean rather than some other cleaning device which may damage a user's screen. 10 Comments »

UMP: Ubuntu Multimedia Package (with legal codecs)

Linux submitted by xivulon 12/12/07

A paid-for commercial multimedia package with legal codecs would be a nice addition to the Dell repo. I am not a big fan of closed codecs, but if that is stumbling block for some users, better have Ubuntu + proprietary codecs than a 100% propietary solution. Today the lack of proprietary codecs is probably the single most common compalint against Ubuntu after hardware compatibility. This would close the gap nicely, without forcing proprietary codecs on the ones that do not wish to sponsor them. Plus there might be some money for Dell too. Fluendo provides one such package http://www.fluendo.com/products.php?product=plugins . I did not use it myself, but it could be a nice starting point. 3 Comments »

Improve the DELL XPS 1530 this 2008 to attract more consumers that love DELL's Laptop

XPS products submitted by bryan14c 12/13/07

Well the specs of the currrent xps 1530 is quite good but it lacks something, DELL consider another option about the screen resolution and WLED and also it lacks 1 USB not like inspiron 1520 it has 4 USB ports i think you should put 4 USB Ports, also the Speakers i think you should put some nice speakers on it like HP done to their pavilion line maybe you should team up with BOSE or LOGITECH or CREATIVE , and also improve your touch sensitive media buttons and i have heard many complaints about the xps 1330 slot load optical drive ,well i don't know if this problem is with an 1530 also , I'm Planning to buy one but it seems that the DELL XPS 1530 right now has a lack of features but well over all its a Very Good Nice Design , and also make the DELL logo at the back of the screen Glow put some led lights on it so that there is kind of touch that you had an XPS laptop like the high end model that it has some lights on the Logo, and the aluminum brushed finish i think you must improve it might consider another material. i hope you should also consider the tuxedo black color to be a GLOSSY FINISH like the HP pavilion , but maintain the design with silver lines as well as it will be glossy also, well over all a Dell has a nice and a Very Good Product and i hope they will apply some of ideas i talk about , the last thing is that Please change the Color of the remote maybe design a remote that its only on a XPS line because the color is boring, well keep it up dell and i hope you will apply this on your DELL XPS 1530 this coming 2008 o hope there is an improvement 21 Comments »

Offer BOTH the 32 bits AND the 64 bits versions of all Windows Vista editions (Home Basic/Premium, Business and Ultimate) on all PCs

Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by winoffice Feb 24

(Note to XP and Linux users: I am not against Dell offering XP and Linux as well, but this idea is specifically about Vista.)

(Note to Dell: I have never seen any exact duplicate of this so far, as I have seen no idea asking for both 32 bits and 64 bits yet. So please do not merge with what you might find to be a duplicate, until you notify me and I make a reply.)

The idea has been thrown around the site for quite a long time now. I have seen ideas asking for 64 bits Vista, but no specific mentions of 32 bits Vista. So I decided to post it.

Offer both the 32 bits and the 64 bits versions of all Windows Vista editions (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) on all PCs.

That way, I could choose any of those four editions in either 32 bits or 64 bits format. With 32 bits, you can get better compatibility with hardware and software. With 64 bits, you can get better use of memory, and you are able to get up to 4 GB of RAM and even greater.

In my opinion, neither outweighs the other, so I would like it if Dell could offer all of it. I personally will buy only 32 bits Vista because for me, compatibility is more important than memory usage and I do not happen to need 4 GB of memory. But many others want the option of 64 bits Vista.

HP can offer 64 bits Vista Ultimate (I myself have tried to configure their PCs), why can you not? The problem with them however, is that I am forced into buying 64 bits Vista Ultimate or no Vista Ultimate at all. You currently offer 32 bits Vista Ultimate, and keep that option. Just add 64 bits Vista options to your current offerings, but keep your current offerings too. 50 Comments »

Need Gigabit Ethernet in M1530.

XPS products submitted by hoodedthing 12/06/07

What about Gigabit ethernet...? It's really not new technology, and it's pretty dissappointing not to see it in the m1530. It wouldn't be that hard to implement now.. Just start sticking gigabit ethernet ports in the laptops instead of 10/100.

This kind of thing is pretty easy to do, it's not expensive for you guys, and makes a huge difference in transfer of files for wired internet. Put gigabit ethernet in the 1530. 9 Comments »

Provide XP Recovery CD's for Vista customers like Lenovo/IBM do.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 12/07/07

This great idea stolen straight from one of your competitors.

Have a Microsoft Windows Vista Business or Microsoft Windows Ultimate system, but need to continue using Microsoft Windows XP for a while? For a limited time Lenovo is providing Windows XP Recovery CD media as a way to downgrade from Windows Vista.

Make A Wireless Dell

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power. 220 Comments »

$2500 base price is outrageous for the XT Tablet

Latitude products submitted by jervis961 12/11/07

I can't believe Dell would shoot itself in the foot like this. After people waiting so long on Dell's tablet only to get a watered down spec list and huge price tag.

http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/11/dell-latitude-xt-tablet-is-official-sexy/

"12.1-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) in CCFL ("outdoor display," up to 400cd/m2) and LED backlight options

Capacitive touchscreen(!!) with palm detection (this, if anything, could enable that supposed multi-touch), and active digitizer.

Intel Core 2 Solo or Duo ULV at 1.06 and 1.2GHz, respectively
ATI Radeon X1250 UMA Graphics
Up to 3GB memory, runs Vista Ultimate or Business
40GB or 80GB 4200 RPM drive, 120GB 5400 RPM drive, or 32GB or 64GB SSD
HSDPA or EVDO rev A., 802.11a/b/g/n options, Bluetooth 2.0, and gigabit Ethernet connectivity
ExpressCard54 and SD slots, 1394, VGA, (3) USB 2.0
Scroll wheel, biometric reader, TPM 1.2, super low profile power adapter
Up to 5 hours battery life with standard 43WH pack, up to 9 hours with extended 45WH pack; Energy Star 4.0 compliant
3.57 pounds (presumably without battery), 1-inch thick"

At least offer a version without the multi-touch to lessen the cost a bit. I am still in shock that this comes with only 1 speaker.

I'm still waiting for a 13.3" tablet with usable specs like the following...

Allow for a hardware configurable notebook

Laptops submitted by sawjd 12/05/07

Create a note book that allows us to easily switch out hardware and i don't just mean ram or optical drives but something like that allows to switch out video cards and the ability to upgrade processor as long as the motherboard supports it. This would be akin to the HP blackbird but for the notebook 1 Comment »

Identify Hardware with native Linux support

Linux submitted by waterguy1960 12/07/07

Please identify hardware choices that offer native linux support in the "build yours" options. And provide hardware choices that allow for a configuration that is entirely compatible with linux. This would be much more convenient that a list of linux supported hardware somewhere else on the website. If a computer model cannot be configured with native linux support, say so on the "build yours" page. I don't need or want Dell to install Ubuntu (or any other linux distribution) on a computer for me ... I just need to know that the computer I'm buying supports linux natively. The notebook computer my employer provided me works perfectly with linux. Unfortunately, despite much research before my purchase, not all the hardware on my Dell notebook provides native linux support. Comment »

XPS M1530 Resolution ??

XPS products, Laptops submitted by avnanda 11/27/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

SCREEN RESOLUTIONS for XPS Laptop Line

Why on God's green earth would Dell throw in such a cheapy LCD screen into the XPS 1530 ? I've been waiting for this laptop religously since it was 'announced', in the hope of a 1680x1050 screen, or at LEAST 1440x900. What is this, Dell ? Are you trying to scare away your customers with blocky icons and low resolutions ?

Ok, on a less rampaging note ..

Is there any possibility this might change in the future ? Would i be foolish to order immediately, only to see a couple of LCD options pop up over the next few days ?

We now offer 1440 x 900 and 1680 x 1050 panels as an option. Take a look at the Direct2Dell blog post on the idea.

Smaller mouse size for primary students.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by dgweh 10/24/07

I have been an elementary school principal in Texas for 15 years and have seen first hand the positive changes that computers and technology has made over the years. The only constant problem over the years that I have seen is the difficulty of the primary grade students (Kindergarten and First grade) being able to manage or control a computer only because of the size of the mouse compared to the size of their hands. Our school has several computer labs (which are Dell computers) and I see on a daily basis the younger students working with keyboarding, instructional software, and other computer skills. A high percentage of questions or concerns from the students has to do with not being able to control the mouse as well as they want to. Yesterday I even noticed a young student using both hands to control the mouse.
My idea is to create a smaller sized mouse that fits the hand of our K & 1 students. While this would benefit the primary students, it would not prevent them from learning mouse skills the correct way. They would just simply move to the regular size mouse when needed, probably about 2nd grade (age 7).
Another benefit would be the ease and low costs for school districts to switch out the mouse on certain computers located in the primary classrooms or even a primary computer lab. I don't think this product would be too difficult to produce since it would only be a size alteration of a product that already exists. The financial benefits of the company that produces this are obvious based on the huge numbers of school districts in the U.S. 3 Comments »

Expand Dell Outlet - sell second hand, returned, damaged and refurbished computers and components

Sales Strategies submitted by badblood 10/04/07

Dell must have a lot of stuff that is broken, damaged, marked, second hand, ready to be refurbished, returned, old, and so on and so forth. I wonder which landfill it all goes to? Why not sell it instead? Why not trade it? Why not start an online flea market for all that stuff?

There is money to be made in the second hand market. It's just a matter of finding someone who can make it happen.

Expand Dell Outlet to include more junk.

Why not allow consumers to sell their old stuff on the site too, like ebay or something.....anyway 9 Comments »

Make CD/DVD drive swappable with an extra HD

New Product Ideas submitted by biehl 06/09/07

If the CD/DVD drives uses SATA then it should be a small problem to unplug the CD/DVD drive and plug in some kind of alternative slider which contains an extra hard driver(or solid state drive) which also uses SATA.

That would rock - RAID on even really lightweight laptops! ;o) And the option to have an SSD drive as main drive, and magnetic disk HD as extra drive for storage.

For laptops which already use SATA for the CD/DVD drive you just need to produce the slider... 3 Comments »
