LED Backlit Displays for Higher Resolutions for XPS M1530

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by whitefrost May 14

The release of the LED backlit 1440 x 900 display is great, but needs to be expanded to higher resolutions most notably the 1680 x 1050 resolution which a large number of people use and are most comfortable with. It would not be a threat to the M1730 as you can keep the LED Full HD 1920 x 1200 for it alone. 5 Comments »

Make Linux a choice on all systems

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by synful Jun 8

Guys, why is it when you can allegedly get Linux on desktops and laptops, that it is never an option in the configuration of a product prior to purchasing?

All we seem to get as an option is Windows and then there is no option to not have Windows as an operating system. I understand that you may have reasons behind the system not having Linux as an option but surely you do not use hardware that is so non standard that either Ubuntu or SuSE will not work on it?

In the event that the computer that you use is not Linux compatible, then note this on the configuration page accordingly. For arguments sake have a pop up advising that some hardware is not compatible with Linux if it is selected as an OS choice. 2 Comments »

Please make Ubuntu XPS Notebook cheaper than XPS Vista Notebook

Linux, Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by dki May 26

Hi,
I have tested the price of the default Vista-Notebook XPS M1330 (in Germany) and the Ubuntuversion with the same Configuration. The result was amazing :(:

Vistaversion: 909,00 €
Linuxversion: 923,44 €

Is Vista cheaper than Ubuntu?? I can not imagine.

So my wish: Make Ubuntu-Laptops competitive! 19 Comments »

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet

XPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude. 28 Comments »

more linux choices

Linux, Operating Systems, Service and Support submitted by capnskyler Feb 13

i would ask that more linux distributions be considered.
ubuntu is made originally from debian, and also offer fedora 8 and perhaps gentoo as well.
you can use part of the linux distribution's online help as part of your own help system.
perhaps a linux live cd/dvd to be included with each ubuntu equipped computer sold?it lets user test drive and not have to worry about installing to the HD.
and i'd say NO to the millions LOL of linux distros, just the major players, and theones that are the easiest to use and install.even the advances of the last 2 years have made linux SIGNIFICANTLY easier to install and get everything working on the first try.

Dell: TELL THE WHOLE TRUTH about your Ubuntu offerings!

Dell, Linux, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by phubert 11/30/07

The PATH to Linux at Dell remains VERY CLOUDY for ordinary customers.

Here's what I found:

I just went through the Ubuntu system build and found a few interesting items.

After the review, the following was printed in a green highlight:

"We have some recommendations for you highlighted in green below."

Only there WERE NO recommendations highlighted in green.

Before I got there, from the "Dell and Linux" page, under "Linux on the Desktop", I was told:

“Extend your desktop and notebook environments with factory-installed Ubuntu on select Dell DimensionTM , XPSTM or InspironTM computers.” and clicked on the “Learn More” link.

THERE, I was greeted with the UBUNTU HAS ARRIVED BY POPULAR DEMAND banner and went on to select “Shop For Ubuntu”

HOWEVER, arriving THERE, I found NO XPS –or- Dimension system offered! 5 Comments »

Linux for business, too

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by lonelovetenerife 06/21/07

The Inquirer says: "WHILE DELL MAY have made some moves towards Ubuntu Linux, it is refusing to allow its business customers to buy it."

It's true? Dell sell Linux for home use, but not for business? I think Dell must sell computers with Linux to anybody, whatever the use they do....

Linux is not a problem, apps around is a problem

Linux, Software submitted by vladute 05/26/07

HI there folks, I saw you so excited about the linux installed. I have windows, somehow I like it somehow I hate it. Lets start I like is good design, I hate I have to pay for it. but... when we are about to work as a graphic designer we are sticked with apps like adobe, and adobe has no version for for linux, like cs3. When the big software industry will give this freedom to linux, then you will win the war agains microsoft. This was a good first step to make the free os working, next will be to make big companies like adobe to have linux version, or to have an open source alternative, yet profesional to their suite, not just gimp. 6 Comments »

Include Multiple Dell-Customized Linux install disks

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by artemisgoldfish 05/24/07

Instead of only including one OS on a Dell Linux machine (Ubuntu), include many different Linux install disks which cover the gamut of popular distributions, such as SuSe/OpenSuSe, Fedora, Ubuntu (Of course), Slackware, or other such OS's.

Alternatively, or in addition to that, a Linux Installation temporary OS could be installed on the hard drive of a new computer, which would include a few of the more popular Linux distributions on the hard drive itself and allow a user to select the one they wish to install, which would then delete the other Operating Systems from the drive. 3 Comments »

Dell: Note the positive PR your Ubuntu stuff gets you - front page NY Times Online article on Ubuntu/Dell

Linux submitted by jmxz 10/04/07

This Dell/Ubuntu article made the NYTimes Online front page.

The New York Times
The Next Leap for Linux
Published: October 4, 2007

Dell is testing the waters with a Linux-equipped notebook computer, in a challenge to Microsoft and Apple.
...
Until recently, major PC makers shied away from Linux. Now the industry is watching as Dell is selling two Linux-equipped desktop models ...and a ...notebook PC. (Hewlett-Packard offers Linux systems to businesses, and Lenovo, the Chinese company that bought I.B.M.’s PC division, sells Linux machines in China and says it will soon offer Linux-based computers in the United States.)
...
Now if only Dell would offer it on some more desirable systems (looking for a quad-core desktop now); and price it competitively internationally (where they still charge a few hundred dollar premium), this Linux effort might have a chance of working.

The Idea is that Dell should take note of the positive PR and continue the PR efforts around it. Ubuntu+Dell is a newsworthy topic of interest to the mainstream media today.

Firefox, Mozilla thunderbird as well as mozilla sunbird

Linux, Software submitted by rakeshinnovation 02/27/07

I have been an internet user for the past 5 years, I have used all almost all the browsers, and without doubt i can say that in terms of performance, security, and user interface the open source browsers are the best, the kind of addons and features i get with Firefox i will never be getting with internet explorer, so i was thinking why do not dell ship computers with Firefox Mozilla thunderbird and the calendar software subird???? it could add to the efforts of the open source community, me as a supporter for the open source community would love to see Dell systems with open source applications, I would request that all people who support open source please cast your valuable vote for this idea, I was also thinking that if the Mozilla community cooperates with Dell , Dell could have a customized browser which will be really good for the customers of the Dell and it could add value to the Dell line of products, lets see the what Dell's thinks about this idea//?

Do post your feedbacks,

Install Linux Mint (a derivative of Ubuntu) World-Wide (except USA) for Features and Convenience in Dell Systems

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by awong 07/26/07

Congratulations to Dell for planning (**COMING SOON**) a worldwide release of Linux systems!

http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66672/Sell_Linux_PCs_Wordwide__not_only...

For countries in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere (not sure if this includes Canada or Australia) that do not have to worry about codec issues and all, Dell should pre-install Linux Mint, a very polished and full featured derivative of Ubuntu.

http://linuxmint.com/

Linux Mint uses Ubuntu repositories for updates and additional software installation, so it is already compatible with the current hardware in Dell Linux systems. It also has many free extra features already included with the OS, so customers will not have to search for and install software. The huge advantage of Linux Mint having applications such as a full featured office suite and working multimedia out of the box is that it will attract new customers who previously would have purchased a Dell system with the other OS that does not include all these features unless paid for. Dell would no longer have to hide its Linux offerings within its web pages; it could boldly advertise fully featured Linux systems and sell them for a lower cost than the other OS.

Dell has made a good decision for the US market; now Dell can make a good decision for the global market! Comment »

Show which products can support Ubuntu/Linux

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by tashmooclam 08/02/07

Assuming some people (like me) want to buy another laptop configuration besides the 2 offered with Ubuntu installed by Dell.
Dell should try to at least show which computers/components/configurations might be able to run Ubuntu/Linux.
We all know they can already run Windows. Which ones may not be appropriate for Linux? Some may have components for which drivers are rare or non-existant. 4 Comments »

Pressure VMWare to Support Ubuntu LTS on ESX Server

Linux, Servers and Storage submitted by rebootme Jan 3

VMWare does not support Ubuntu LTS on ESX Server. If they did, it would help Dell sell more servers to run VMWare and host Ubuntu guests.

I run several heavily loaded VMs running Ubuntu (SMTP gateways that process about 4 million messages a month). They are rock solid. But, I still have one out of the group that is running RedHat because if something goes wrong I can't get support from VMWare for Ubuntu.

If Dell really wanted to get into it - offer pre-loaded Ubuntu VMs or downloadable virtual appliances. Comment »

The Spartan XPS - with 2+ Physical CPUs

Gaming submitted by highlordares 07/23/07

I'm not a hardware expert or anything, but would there be any real gaming advantage in having TWO physical, top of the line Quad Xeon's instead of just ONE physical, top of the line Quad Core 2 Extreme, in an XPS?

I've been looking at Dell's servers for the 2-CPU possibilities for gaming, but all those systems seem to come with those silly Quadro video cards - where's our 8800 Ultra goodness at? :|

The $7K Uber Overclocked XPS Watercooled system's tagline is "Warrior Power"...

if a 2-CPU XPS system could possibly be even more insane than that, it's tagline would have to be something like "This is SPARTA!"

I know this probably isn't doable (do server-ish motherboards even support 8800 Ultra/SLI?), and I'm probably way off base, but it was an idea I just had to throw out there. 6 Comments »

Restore disk for Ubuntu

Linux submitted by limerat 11/13/07

People who use Windows get a restore disk, people who use Linux should get a restore disk as well.
I just bought a Dell last week...The update manager stopped working in Ubuntu.. So I went to the Ubuntu forums and pasted in the correction into the terminal which should have fixed the problem.-
It did not work.
I reinstalled the OS.
The machine would no longer go on line.
I finally end up at Dell tec support for Linux where I'm told there are missing drivers..So since Dell already knows about this, why are the drivers not installed on Ubuntu or supplied on a recovery disk, along with instructions for people new to Linux?
Anyway, I'm sent to a web page to download the drivers. Lucky for me a friend has let me borrow her computer,or I'd be up the creek without a paddle. I have yet to burn the disk though,as I'm only a guest on said computer.

I have to wonder who else this has happened to and if they can't download the drivers, what have they done? Have they set the machine on the curb for trash pickup?
This foul up is going to make a lot of people really unhappy and Dell needs to have fixed this before they decided to load Linux on their first box. There is no excuse for such inept sloppiness on the part of a professional company.
Had I known about this, I NEVER would have bought a Dell.

Anyway,I just so you know,Dell did provide a video drivers disk with Ubuntu...The problem was the disk had only Windows drivers....Which is useless..
Somebody at Dell needs to get a clue. 8 Comments »

Did you know? Dell leads the Linux workstation market

IdeaStorm, Linux submitted by phubert 09/13/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

We see a number of categories in IdeaStorm, but NONE covers WORKSTATIONS.

Interesting?

Likely an oversight, huh?

The 'suggestion' here is that Dell -add- the "workstation" category since this article provides clear evidence that it is UNIQUE.

What do you think? ****

Check out the Precision Workstation category in the listing on the right side of the page.
