9800 GX2 (and offer SLi)

It has been released. The benchmarks are in. This is the new king. Alienware is offering it. Let's see an XPS 740 or XPS 840 that offers this card.
And allow ultra-enthusiasts to get quad-SLi. Even Alienware hasn't done this yet, even though the initial SLi drivers are released for testing.
256 stream processors, 1GB RAM, and a fillrate of 76.8 billion/sec. Wow!!

Submit hardware specifications to the Linux Driver Project
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by upstaked
10/05/07 **REVIEWED**
Back in January kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman from Novell started a project offering companies free Linux driver development.
This proved so successful that Novell made it his full-time job and turned to a project with over 200 kernel developers: http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/ .
So Dell, submit specs and convince your hardware providers to do so too. I want to spend my money on great new hardware that runs on Linux.
We constantly work with our hardware partners to develop and maintain open-sourced drivers. Also, we make it clear that through their own developers (or other projects like the Linux Driver Project) they need to deliver on drivers.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood
08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.
Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Any news about an M2030 notebook?
XPS products submitted by kanoneno

Hi, I´m a fan of the XPS M2010, and I´m really looking foward for a XPS M2030. I´m a visual artist and video producer and editor and music composer, and for what I do, the XPS M1730 has it all. The thing is that the 17 inch display is not enough or at least not comftable enough for working, thats why I prefer the 20 inch display. I really don´t mind about the weight and those issues because, no matter what, is better to carry around a notebook of those dimensions than a desktop of any weight and size. As I dont have a specific place to work like an office, I usually have to keep moving from one place to another. Anyway, there are some things that I would like to see in a upgraded version of the M2010, that is: - A WXUGA display - I noticed that a big discussion about this issue is in the mind of all the enthusiasts. I don´t know if it´s posible. - At least 512 MB in the graphics card. - The Ageia PhysX processor available in the 1730 - And higher processor speeds. I realize that this don´t depend on you but in Intel or AMD, Anyway I´m more than happy with the 2.8Ghz of the Intel Dual Core Extreme processor but it would be nice to see it rise.
I don´t know if any of this things are technically posible for the time being, but those options will really increase the performance up to the level of working really comftable with heavy tasks such as video editing and music composing.

Optimize laptop chassis size - do not add dead space around of the LCD's edges.
Laptops submitted by mandarinka
11/26/07
One of the main constraints laptop design should heed is that of maximum portability and minimal size at the given LCD size category. Why? The LCD is actually the sole component taht cannot be shrunk (if so, we would have a computer from lower size category) - so the size of the display is the minimum for the chassis size. Now what I think good design shouldn't fail in: there should be as little "dead space" along the LCD's edges as possible. I have seen 15,4" laptops that waste more than 3cm of width this way, while the excess height of the lid is even bigger (with widescreen units anyway). Off course, the new Asus Eee is an extrme example of this: 7" display in 10" size enclosure.
I suggest Dell should make sure the components are aranged in as compact way as possible inside the laptop, so that the chassis isn't bigger than necessary. Every 1cm in excess greatly reduces the maneuverabilty of the computer, especcially with 15,4" and 14" widescreen models, 12" ultraportable models on the other hand benefit from every milimeter of size reduction, as portability is of most importance in their segment; the size reduction also brings the weight down a bit.

A REAL 15" XPS
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products, XPS products submitted by soslowxps

All I have to say about the "New" XPS M1530 is that it is severely disappointing. It is basically a 1520 in a supersized 1330 chassis.
With the launch of the 8800M and several companies announcing 15" laptops based around the 8800M GTX I expected a strong showing from Dell.
I want a 15" laptop with some teeth to replace my well aged Inpiron 9300.
The XPS M1530's teeth are as sharp as my grandma's when she takes her dentures out.
I don't want a Integrated webcam. I don't want a Biometric scanner. I'll NEVER use either of them. I understand some people might, hence the reason for options.
I thought XPS meant power, and gaming, not a 6 month late release. The reason I say 6 month late is because it is so simlilar to the 1520.
It has a higher resolution screen. The SAME video card, memory option. Comparable Processors. None of the "extras" I don't want. Looks are subjective, I like them both.
If the M1530 can bearly compete with it's "Little Brother" How do they expect it to compete with the REAL gaming 15" laptops coming.
I hope Dell updates the M1530 with even the lower end 8800M as an option, otherwise it'll get crushed performace wise with it's lowly 8600GT.

Ditch the XPS M1730 as soon as possible and start to design a new model right now!

Ditch the XPS M1730 as soon as possible and start to design a new model right now!
(Okay you do not necessarily have to ditch it, but do let us get it in the design of the Inspiron XPS Generation 2.)
When you design your next XPS 17" model, please make it look exactly like the Inspiron XPS Generation 2. But allow us to make it look like the M1330/M1530 as well.
Look at this picture of the XPS M1730 - pretty ugly, no? The absolutely white (not just silver) keyboard with the completely white surronding of it is one bad spot. Another is the black Dell logo on the lid - I know that davmcn likes it but not everyone likes it. Finally, look at the red "XPS" trapezoids with the straight borders. Does that not look uglier than the smooth borders of the Inspiron XPS Generation 2, XPS M170 or XPS M1710? Another bad feature - the Inspiron XPS Generation 2, just like the XPS M170 and XPS M1710, has a glossy and metallic-looking lid outside of the "XPS" areas. But the lid of the XPS M1730 does not look glossy or metallic (although it may be the former of the two) - it looks like cirrus clouds, and that does not look very appealing on a computer.
The XPS M1730.

Now look at the Inspiron XPS Generation 2 - black keyboard, silver Dell logo with a silver surrounding (when the lid looks metallic, like the XPS M1710 "Metallic Black", or the Gneration 2 here, I prefer a silver surrounding) that is also glossy and metallic-looking (and does not look like cirrus clouds like the XPS M1730), and smooth borders for the "XPS" areas.
The Inspiron XPS Generation 2.

Does the XPS Generation 2 not look better than the XPS M1730? Even davmcn said that it "looks nice" in a comment, despite the silver logo.
Also, I saw fingerprint readers and PC video cameras (I dislike the term "web cam") on the XPS M1530. I ask you to make it OPTIONAL on all systems. Let us get them if we want them, but allow us to OPT OUT of getting them if we do not want them.
Plus, consider the weight comparison between the reviewed models.
Read this page http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,1769520,00.asp and you will see that the weight of the Inspiron XPS Generation 2 is 8.5 pounds, and the weight for the XPS M170 and the XPS M1710 is similar.
Read this page http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-xps-m1730-core/4505-3121_7-32687269.html and you will see that the weight of the XPS M1730 is 10.6 pounds.
Why such a sudden jump in weight? Is 10.6 pounds not a little too heavy?
I apologize for using the pictures of others but I have no way to use my own now. I also apologize for duplicating .chris's idea but I have some pictures and links to support the idea and .chris does not - he is apparently banned (but why?) and thus cannot now edit his idea.
So please Dell...when you design your next XPS 17" model, make it look exactly like the Inspiron XPS Generation 2. But allow us to make it look like the M1330/M1530 as well (not at the same time of course, but do let us choose between them).

Inspiron Notebook Graphics Card Options Are LACKING...budget gamers VOTE to change!
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming submitted by syrics06

Dell,
It wasn't but 2-YEARS ago when I purchased my Inspiron E1705. It came equipped with a Geforce Go 7900GS ($299.00 Option) which was perfect for gaming....Now, it wasn't near as fast as the Geforce Go7900GTX that was in the XPS line but it provided me with a good 'BUDGET' gaming computer.
I recently have been circling your website to find a similar budget/gaming configuration and have been unsuccessful. Why?
Dell only offers LOW END graphics cards like the Geforce 8400GS/GT & Geforce 8600GS/GT...Sure, they are DX10...but what good does that do if you can't even play a DX10 game at a reasonable framerate?
I mean C'MON DELL....A Geforce 8600GT in a 17" laptop? My 2-year old laptops graphics card is MUCH FASTER....Whats up here?
It seams you are forcing the budget gamers to either choose HORRIBLE FRAME-RATES or $2500.00+ XPS Systems that the performance will be doubled on in two months AKA - XPS 1730 w/ SLI 8700M - Being replaced in January with 8800M SLI...by the way...ONE 8800M is faster than the TWO 8700Ms....WONDERFUL... so for those of you that just dropped close to $3,000.00...SIT COMFORTABLE KNOWING YOU ARE GOING TO BE DOUBLED ON IN JANUARY.
Budget gamers UNITE and VOTE 'YES' to "BETTER GRAPHICS CARD OPTIONS IN INSPIRON NOTEBOOKS".
Dell, all we want is the OPTION...even if it costs $300.00...let us atleast choose a SINGLE 8700M or 8800M GT in the 17" inspiron notebooks "desktop replacements".

Ordering on-line or on the phone
Service and Support submitted by bc45238

I recently placed an order for ink for my printer. I first went into the web sight but cancelled the order when you asked for my social security number to place the order. I then called on the telephone and again I was asked for my social security number. Do you not realize that giving out your social security number is a dangerous thing to do. Most places will settle for the last 4 digits, however, you insist on having the full number. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!! Unless you change your methods of security for an order I will be forced to purchase a different printer, one which I can go to a store and purchase my supplies. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR YOU TO INSIST ON PEOPLE GIVING OUT THEIR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER TO THE MULTITUDE OF PERSONNEL YOU HAVE WORKING FOR YOU AS THEY COULD POSSIBLY COMMIT IDENTIFY FRAUD. AND I AM NOT WILLING TO GIVE IT OUT THE NEXT TIME I NEED SUPPLIES. I will check it out and if you still insist on the entire SS#, I will stop dealing with Dell. Thank you. From Bonnie Cates.

Offer a choice of regional keyboards as part of laptop configuration.

I live in California but I prefer to use a French Canadian keyboard. To get a laptop with a French Canadian keyboard, I had to order my computer from the Canadian web site dell.ca and have the computer shipped (from the USA factory) to Canada and then have it shipped back to the USA.
If it is made in the USA why can't it be shipped to the USA?
I am sure there are many people in the States that would like to use a Spanish keyboard if it was available.
Similarly, a wider selection of keyboards should be offered in most countries, both for laptops and desktops.

Dell: Support Open BIOSes for Linux

The current BIOS is a legacy throwback... it's time to replace it!

Make a calendar with all COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas
Advertising and Marketing, IdeaStorm submitted by krasmussen
09/22/07 **REVIEWED**
One of the biggest annoyances with IdeaStorm is that the horizon for an idea being implemented is very blurry, if at all existing. If you're lucky, you get "third quarter 2009", but mostly, there is no timeframe at all. This leads to the feeling that not much is being done, and exactly that feeling is what IdeaStorm should be eliminating.
Therefore, I propose that you make a list or calender with all the COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas with timeframes for all of them. Just a "december 2008" would be nice, or better yet, "deadline 31st november 2008".
I don't know if this is connected with some goal management inside Dell, if it is, maybe you should work on improving that, too?
Today, the best way to know the progress of an idea is through Ideas in Action, our Weekly Update or Dell comments in the thread.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM
Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript
08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself. On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...
It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.
thanks =D

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers
Software submitted by jervis961
08/23/07 **REVIEWED**
Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?
"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"
Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers
