Dell Small Business vs Dell Home

Sales Strategies submitted by jamesmoroni1 May 2

The split between Dell Small Business and Dell Home has been an endless source of confusion and frustration for price-sensitive customers. I don't see the need for the two separate divisions. I've purchased computers from both, and keeping track of where I bought which machine is very frustrating. It also makes it harder to be sure you're getting the best price.

Dell SB and Dell Home should go away -- it should be just Dell.com. There could be special options for people who want to purchase several machines at once, but there's no need to have separate storefronts -- the needs of small businesses and home users are very similar. 23 Comments »

Hot-swappable laptop batteries.

Laptop Power submitted by jmxz May 31

I'd like to be able to swap the battery on my laptop without having to turn it off or hibernate it. It seems you could do this by putting a large capacitor or tiny internal battery that could provide power for the 30 seconds or so it takes to switch to a spare battery. Another way you might be able to do this is instead of having one big battery in each laptop, have 2 small ones instead; and you could swap them one at a time.

If it was really easy to swap them I'd probably buy more spare batteries; so I could go most of the day without plugging in the laptop (and then I'd want an external charger so I could charge them all overnight). 25 Comments »

AMD Only - get rid of Intel

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by kokuryu 02/21/07

Intel had it's run in the spotlight, but AMD produces technically superior products overall. It is time to stop towing to the line of Intel, and get on the ball with the future in electronics, AMD.

We stopped buying products with Intel CPUs after it became apparant that many of them could not even properly add 1 plus 1 and come up with 2. We never looked back.

The AMD integration also needs to be heavily extended into the Notebook line as well. We can see a few AMD options for the desktops, but it is with the future once again that everyone must look, and the future is all portable - every notebook needs to have a good range of AMD CPUs as options for installation. 5 Comments »

How about another update on the highest voted ideas.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Jun 19

It seems many of the highest voted Ideas are the most neglected by Dell

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office (currently with 138079 points) has been one of the top-5-highest-voted Ideas on IdeaStorm since Feb 07. It has no "Status" regarding whether it's in progress, or rejected; and the only comments from Dell were just one employee's personal opinion.

No OS Preloaded (with 85050 points), has also been one of the top-5-highest for over a year. It's status is the same partial implementation (available on a couple models) that has been true from Dell since long before IdeaStorm was around (2004, if I recall). Clearly the Idea is popular because people want to see it on more models. Rather than just labeling the Idea as "partially implemented as always" - could you give some update on the progress on this Idea.

Firefox instead of IE (with 115593 points) has also been a top-5 idea for over a year. With the recent release of FireFox 3 - along with great press from the technology and business industry alike, another update on this idea would be very welcome. The recent Forbes article Why Firefox Matters clearly sees Firefox as the industry leader, and Wall Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal explicitly states that Firefox 3.0 Is the Best Browser for Web. Surely Dell would want to offer the best for their customers, no? 41 Comments »

Provide extra small rubber feet for your laptops.

Laptops submitted by jmxz 07/11/07

Yesterday a group of us were joking that all 3 of us had three-footed Dell laptops.
The guy with a mac had no such problem.

This is an annoyance to your customers and embarrassing to Dell.

It's been pointed out elsewhere that your small rubber feet on your notebooks fall off easily.
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/70965/Smaller_rubber_feet_that_dont_fal...
Until you can fix this, please supply a few extra small rubber feet when you ship your laptops so people can replace them.

Also - since this is such an annoying defect and makes Dell laptops look almost laughable when they wobble in a business meeting; please send extra rubber feet to any of your existing customers who send you a self-addressed stamped envelope asking for some. 3 Comments »

Include cleaning and screen protection cloth with laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by jkeating 11/02/07

A nice dell branded cleaning cloth should be included with new laptops. This cloth would be used to clean the laptop sceens as well as lay on top of the keyboard when the laptop is closed to protect the screen from keyboard imprints. If a cloth is included it is far more likely that this cloth would be used to clean rather than some other cleaning device which may damage a user's screen. 10 Comments »

Lower Prices of Batteries, especially Replacements

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by gear Apr 18

I realize there is a temporary battery shortage that is driving up prices and also the high cost associated with getting bad batteries that have to be recalled.

However, I know that there are many Li-Ion battery suppliers in China that are currently not qualified as Dell Suppliers and will need a certain amount of work to come up to your quality specs.

Why not begin a program to upgrade their capabilities leading to a more diversified source of batteries, and hopefully, lower prices?

In the mean time, I understand that there are shortages, but it is unconsciousable to raise your prices for replacement batteries to $300 for a 9 cell battery.

That is the level of robbery associated with Sony.

If there is a shortage, hold prices stable but impose rationing instead. 3 Comments »

Lower the price on your LED backlit screens.

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by jervis961 May 24

Currently Dell charges $150 to upgrade a notebook to a LED backlit screen. A recent article shows the price difference between the two technologies is only about $8 now. http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4424

I know there are additional costs for Dell to build the thinner casing to hold the LED but I don't see plastic costing $100 (leaving $42 for profit). I expect that Dell could drop the cost by $50 to $75 easily which would drive sales and continue to drop the cost of the technology. 4 Comments »

XPS M1530 Enhancements

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by vanza Apr 25

The specs of the M1530 look great, but there are some enhancements that would make it much better. A few that have been already proposed:

. Gigabit Ethernet
. Non-glossy screen option
. GeForce 8700 graphics card

And a few I haven't seen here yet:

. e-SATA port
. S/PDIF or optical audio out in the default config.
. move one of the headphone connectors to the side for the above connection.

I know you currently can get S/PDIF out with the Sound Blaster XFi. But that card is not supported on Linux - there are beta drivers, but no goodies like S/PDIF passthrough. Also, the relocated output port would make it less cumbersome to actually have the S/PDIF or optical cable connected to the computer. 5 Comments »

UPDATE the Graphics Card of XPS 1530

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by bryan14c 12/22/07

Hp had an update of their 8600gs graphics card and still DELL has a 256mb 8600gt , why not upgrade it to 512mb plus using DDR3 and still even though there is a 256mb option at least it will be DDR3 in it, well DELL must update the XPS 1530 with a 8600gt 512mb DDR3 graphics Card 7 Comments »

The 15" XPS should compete feature for feature with the MacBook Pro

XPS products submitted by ncd Mar 17

There is no reason why Dell cannot make all of the features of the Apple MacBook Pro available on the XPS of similar size. Some options that are missing from the XPS are:

Available Penryn processors (as of 03/18/2008).
512MB of memory on the 8600M GT video card.
LED backlit display.
Illuminated keyboard in low ambient light environments.
Quick-disconnect power connectors.

Notebook thickness should also match or better that of the MacBook pro. Also, consider illuminating the Dell logo on the cover as Apple does (using color instead of plain white) to give the XPS that "gotta have it" quality and a big image boost for Dell. 15 Comments »

Offer 64-bit Versions of Windows Vista

XPS products submitted by jefisher Jan 14

I have been searching for a new laptop and would like to future-resist the purchase and take full advantage of the 4GB RAM that I would like to include, however the only versions of ANY OS that Dell supports is 32-bit only. Dell needs to offer up the 64-bit versions so that 1/2 the warrenty is not voided when I load the 64-bit version from Microsoft using the same licence (which yes is valid). If MS can offer up these disks, why cant Dell? Support 64-bit Computing now 90% of the computers sold at Dell.com can support it. 20 Comments »

XPS 1530 Lap Top - FIX the SLOT LOADING NOISE!!! AND increase ETHERNET SPEED

XPS products submitted by contrast123 May 30

Yes, ahem, please fix slot loading noise, on XPS 1530, I don't know if all xps models have this, but it would be nice to smoothly eject a DVD or cdr without having a stuttering noise emanate from the machine, EVERYTIME you eject something form the slot loader.

Ethernet, I still cannot believe no GIGABIT ethernet is available for the HIGH end laptop, XPS is suppose to be. If it were a TRUE multimedia home laptop, then you would have it networked with other home machines, meaning, you would LIKE to transfer files, via lan router to other computers.

I use the 1530 as a replacement, and having to tap your fingers while files transfer, is sad.

ALmost depressing considering that your new vostro line, is offering the gigabit ethernet. 2 Comments »

Stealth Mode for XPS laptops

XPS products submitted by jhaber Jun 10

I think it would be nice if the next XPS notebooks included an integrated graphics card that can be switched to, along with a Stealth mode that can be switched to (like your newest Alienware line). These modes would really increase the battery. The m15x gets 2:30 on a six cell... I think that you guys can do a lot better with the XPS line. 2 Comments »

Keep the XPS Product Line

XPS products submitted by dabrace1984 May 12

According to Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/12/dell-dropping-xps-focusing-on-alienware) Dell is going to be dropping the XPS product line and focusing on the Alienware brand for gaming and high performance computing. Promote this Idea to let Dell know that we need to keep the XPS desktop and laptop product line. 31 Comments »

XPS notebook feature refresh

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by atxguy512 Jun 22

With the pending release of the "Studio" Line of Inspiron notebooks, it appears that Dell is looking to take back the notebook market. There are new design features that put the "Studio" notebooks on par with Macbook Pros... slimmer/update design, slot loading DVD +/- RW and/or Blu-ray drive, BACK LIT keyboard, eSATA drives and a host of color options.

For info on "Studio" Dell see: http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/15/even-more-on-dells-studio-1536-1536-and-th...

I'm an XPS fan, so please consider bringing the same options to the m1330, m1530... especially the BACK LIT keyboard. This is the one feature I love about Mac(s). Also, consider uping the video options on the m1530 to offer a 512MB option from nVidia. 3 Comments »
