Promote this if you will not buy a dell until they have pre-installed Linux options.

IdeaStorm submitted by minnow 03/01/07

Promote this so Dell can see what they will loose if they don't listen to their "valued" customers ideas. 3 Comments »

Get rid of pestware *cough* demos.

submitted by grayone 02/24/07

Nothing is more annoying than booting up your brand new "clean" machine to find a dozen plus pieces of trial software. Why not just offer the free and open source alternatives? 1 Comment »

Streamline the MS tax refund

Sales Strategies submitted by polarwolf 02/28/07

This one is a short and easy one...if Dell doesn't want or can't offer OS-less consumer PCs or laptops, at least make it easier for customers to claim the refund they're intitled to in the Microsoft EULA if they don't accept the terms of the license. 20 Comments »

Linux for Dell Dimension & Inspirons

Dimension products, Inspiron products, Linux submitted by jyoungxxxx 02/27/07

I don't know why it has to be so hard to get linux pre-installed to PC's that people buy for home use. I would continue buying Dell PC's if I could have Linux pre-installed. Get with the program Dell... if you work with the Linespire, ubuntu, and fedora teams you could customize a good OS to go with your systems. The linux organization doesn't care about support; we have support already as long as everything is GPL'd and open to support.

Since market share is supposed to be why people support an OS then I guess Intel graphics cards should be the greatest graphics cards right? Intel has the most market share because more people have the systemboards with it built-in than people that buy with the ATI or NVIDIA cards installed so that doesn't mean that they are better at graphics (yet that is). Help Linux build of market share and you will gain more support from loyalty than you could ever realize.

I vote for Dimensions & Inspirons to have Linux pre-installed. 2 Comments »

Install LinuxBios instead of the usual BIOS.

Linux submitted by the_tick 02/27/07

Since Pre installed Linux has gained traction, why not go the next step and replace the proprietary BIOS with an OSS version? 1 Comment »

We want to be able to choose Linux!

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by libres-ailees 02/28/07

DELL can easily offer various OS to be pre-installed at a cost or computers that are totally empty as the customer thinks best for her. Some people may want Ubuntn but would like to have it installed while others want to install their favourite Linux distribution.

DELL doesn't need to display Windows-ready stickers.

We want freedom of choice, and we don't wnat to pay for a useless licences if we choose free software. 1 Comment »

Preinstalling Linux cuts costs, improves performance

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by fox7777 02/21/07

We would recommend having all new Dell computers be preinstalled with cost free Linux. For full power, state-of-the-art computers, SUSE Linux, http://en.opensuse.org or Mepis Linux, http://www.mepis.org would be the best. For lower capacity mini computers, mini laptops, etc, Puppy Linux, http://www.puppylinux.com would be the best choice. Of course, people could always buy and install buggy, pop-up laden, insecure Windows if they wanted. 1 Comment »

Linux, linux and more linux

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by 2aperson 02/21/07

I have not used any flavor of Windows on my machine for years. Moreover, I will not purchase a computer from any vendor that does not allow the purchaser a choice of operating systems (and that does not mean a choice of different versions of Windows). Thus in the past, I have built my own computers. Should Dell start to offer an operating system choice, I will seriously consider purchasing a Dell in the future. (I do plan on purchasing a new computer this fall.) 2 Comments »

Open to the opensource

Linux submitted by andilek 02/21/07

This mean release as much documentation as you can, release sources of your drivers if possible.
This would get you rid of supporting all open source projects, but will give all these projects to support your hardware. And also this would bring you new customers from open source community. 1 Comment »

Linux options - it must avoid the Microsoft Tax

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by royeasto 02/28/07

I like the new ordering site but would like more options. I don't want to buy a screen or mouse or keyboard, I already have loads of them. Offering systems without unwanted extras would be a very environmentally friendly step. I don't want to buy a screen I have a beautiful Elo touchscreen that is delightful for most operations. I would recommend an option of a touchscreen. But most of all I want to use my machine for Linux. I have 3 Linux systems, one Windows XP and one Mac at home.

I haven't bought my last few machines from you as you do not offer a system without an OS or with Linux pre-installed. I feel that buying from you I am paying my money to support Microsoft dominating the software world. I don't care what distro you put on it as I would replace it with FC6, 7... 2 Comments »

Linux on Dell

Linux, New Product Ideas submitted by dominiquebertrand 02/26/07

LINUX : Great Idea.

As a fervent promoter of Unix/linux since 25 years, I suggest that you don't focus on Linux as such, but on the functionalities offered.

Who cares about kernel 2.6.20 or 2.4.24...

what matters is : I want to burn CD/DVDs, I want a good office suite, I want to record and play music, watch and edit movies, I want to use Internet easily,

I want to print, I want to share networks, I want to watch/edit my photos, etc...

THAT'S ALL!!!

Don't put 3 softwares that can do the same thing. One good one is ENOUGH.

Keep it simple!

Copy MS control panel, so that no one has to learn another usage of the machine.

In brief, make it look like Windows. Forget honor and self recognition.

MS has put millions into research regarding the human interface. Just use it!

Make Linux look sexy.

Copy Vista if necessary. Side bar is a good Idea. Apple quick bar is nice too.

In short, take what is best from all worlds and blend it.

(Ie:Windows settings of the machine and Mac look).

Eventually, for windows aficionados, deliver free XoverOffice or VMware or anything like it.

If you want to win you need to deliver a machine ready to work without the need to purchase

additional software.(plug and run)

A good support site is extremely important. A place where you know you can find any driver for any peripheral. So first thing to do is to sort all hardware by categories + a search box.

Make drivers EASY to install!

(Also, after you plug in a new hardware... if the machine can't use it, it goes direct to the site)

You could also create a club of experts to help support. (best experts could win a machine...) 1 Comment »

Sue Microsoft and get out of the Windows Monopoly

Dell, Operating Systems submitted by juanjodic 02/20/07

Microsoft is a business designed to extract money by force from customers, it's not a product customers are excited to buy and give money in exchange. Its a Monopoly.

A lot of people just had it with windows, too much hackers and virus, too much marketing included in explorer too much promises of improvements and they keep delivering the same OS with new names and less options unless you pay more for the same options that where included before! 10 Comments »

linux

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by casperlory 02/27/07

I don't know anything about Linux, but why not give customers a choice re operating systems? I.E. If they want windows, then install windows. if they want Linux, then install Linux, etc. This would make the company more responsive to customer needs and wants without risking losing windows users. Better Linux support

Linux, Service and Support submitted by bobanek 02/28/07

I would like to have better support of Dell HW for Linux distributions. Generally Dell's support is perfect and if you add for each model support for Linux distributions - optimized drivers for HW you use, possibility to have preinstalled Linux, corresponding price and web support for troubleshooting with distros it would be really nice and you would be really No.1 in the world. 1 Comment »
